Economic News, or We're All Going to Die!!!! Or Not. I'm not a Psychic.

April 2, 2025 was Liberation Day, the day that Trump's tariff offensive against the world started. Absent any real numbers, the press focused on the stock market's reaction as proof that it was a bad and destructive thing. Well...

nasdaq.JPG

snp.JPG

There goes that narrative. Stocks are now back to where they were on April 2 one month later.

Are stocks the economy? No. It's somewhere between investment, speculation, and gambling, and the more time goes on, the more I think it's closer to gambling than anything else. What else is there?

Well, how about this? The below is the 2-year bond yield on US Treasuries over the last three months.

2year.JPG

This is important because the 2-year bonds are the main vehicle of financing US debt, and it's lost 50 basis points since Trump took office. The US has a current debt of nearly $37 trillion. 50 basis points saved on that matters when refinancing bonds and directly affecting the amount of interest payments. We're currently at a point where interest payments on debt are probably going to be more than $1 trillion a year. That's more than the DOD's entire budget of about $850 billion.

Shaving down interest rates has an outsized effect on our deficit, and it's why Trump has been so vocal against Fed Chair Powell, an officer who reports to Secretary of the Treasury, Bessent. (Tangentially, Trump does have the power to fire Powell. It's a minor theme of the employment lawsuits going around right now.) The Fed directs interest rates, and the Fed's rates are well out of alignment with market rates, indicating a necessary cut (you know, what Powell rushed to do in October of last year in order to try and help Kamala Harris win the presidency).

Okay, but what else? Who cares about interest rates? I don't really care, even though I know I should. How about this:

One of the lesser talked about parts of the Biden economy was the growth of jobs at the expense of people who were born here in favor of those who weren't. You can see that in the graph where the red line (foreign workers) was consistently above the growth of the green line (native workers), but this last month saw a sharp change, news brought about by the 177,000 April employment numbers.

There is no one number that can indicate the strength of the economy, but the GDP numbers for Q1 (when you actually look under the baseline -.3%) was actually pretty good, employment seems to be moving in the right direction, and bond yields seem to indicate better management of federal debt.

We are just over 100 days into Trump's presidency. He walked in with what he saw as a mandate to shake things up. We've gotten a lot of noise about how it's all bad, but...all I'm really seeing is signs of hope.

90 "Shaving down interest rates has an outsized effect on our deficit, and it's why Trump has been so vocal against Fed Chair Powell, an officer who reports to Secretary of the Treasury, Bessent. (Tangentially, Trump does have the power to fire Powell. It's a minor theme of the employment lawsuits going around right now.)"

The modern Fed has two mandates: 2% economic growth (arbitrary, yet consensus decided) and 'full' employment. While the MSM states that the Fed isn't political, these are clearly political goals - especially in light of the fact that everyone votes here in the USA, not just white male property-owners. Interest rates affect the cost and value of capital, as well as employment capacities. Trump certainly isn't the first to pressure the Fed (LBJ did it more overtly, and FDR literally controlled the Fed during the Great Depression), and he won't be the last.

Besides, Trump has been right about where interest rates needed to go for the entire time he was POTUS. In 2018, IIRC, CNBC and others pressured Powell to raise rates when Trump wanted them lowered - to show his independence. He did, then quickly reversed course when the marked crapped out. Womp womp.

91 My Ford Fusion lost its transmission, and a new one costs $8500, so I'm in the market for a new car. I went to the dealerships today (not Ford) and looked at an Acura TLX, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, and a couple of SUVs. To my surprise, the Accord and Camry are now almost exclusively available with a hybrid.

I contemplated why they would do something so stupid, and then it dawned on me; they have to to meet Biden's CAFE standards for the fleet. Screw what the customer actually wants, we in the government will decide what's good for you.

I was so angry I'm now looking at a Ridgeline and an SUV, and have almost given up on my preferred option: a sedan.

Lutnick's interview with the All-In crew is very instructive in this regard. According to him, the major factor that decided who was picked among the finalists was their ability to communicate in front of a camera. Their screening room had eight huge screens that showed snippets of interviews each on did with the media, and the eventual pick was always the one who presented best. Trump required this level of competency from his people.

Boise Cascade used to have a huge paper mill in the center of Salem, it was a blight and stench that was difficult to believe. There's a park nearby now, a huge concrete sphere that used to hold ghastly chemicals in it was deemed impossible to really clean or move safely, so they sealed it and painted it like a jaunty planet earth.

It doesn't move the needle because it was such obvious nonsense everyone knew it wouldn't work. The best was during the election someone went to the HS rail like and was riffing on the waste and the department sent enforcers out to protest the protest. High comedy.

I'm less well versed on geography in NorCal so here is the problem with HS rail in So Cal. In order to be high speed, and get to SoCal, you have to cross a major line of large hills. So a tunnel? or a pass cut through?

Then you hit valleys filled with roads and infrastructure and houses that you have to destroy to make a nice fast unblocked path. Then a second line of hills...and even more hills and full valleys...

never gonna happen.

323 How about a liquor store?

Oregon literally owns all liquor stores in the state.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at May 02, 2025 05:27 PM (2VST1)

Washington used to but I think they divested. one of the true pleasures of moving to California in the 80s was buying booze at Ralphs.

327 In California, you could buy hard liquor in Safeway.

Cali did have some redeeming qualities, back in the 90s.

329 Dude near me has a 1962 two-tone Thunderbird for sale, it looks like its in good shape, at least the body. Its Oregon so shouldn't be much rust. Probably gonna be pretty expensive for a bullet bird.

One of the "flowerpot taillight" 'Birds! I think they're also nicknamed the "submarine-nose" T-Birds, because the front fender seen in profile looks like a WWII sub. Beautiful cars, as were the '64-'66 models.

330 Comes with uprated AGM (glass mat) battery.
batteries are only good for 2-5 years anyways.

Posted by: DaveA at May 02, 2025 05:19 PM (FhXTo)

I just reinstalled the battery into my '88 Chevy pickup. Date on it is 5/13, and it will start the truck OK.

Made by Toyota. They'd sell a bunch of them here, but reasons ...

332 The Toyota Hilux is simply the best built small truck I have ever seen. They sell a 3L diesel with 5 speed manual that you will absolutely tire of before it quits running.

Posted by: Fast Eddie Felson at May 02, 2025 05:32 PM (McYvC)

333 Duncanthrax, bet you can't get an extended warranty on those trucks.

I'd buy one, especially if I could get the Ma Deuce trim model.

There was also that brief aborted attempt at "You've got to put on your belt in order to start the car." The starter would not engage unless you had the belt buckled. That didn't last, thankfully.

Yeah that went from "that's kinda convenient" to "Awwgh whose idea was this!!!" in a hurry for me. Plus, just how strong are those things with that sliding track thing?

343 The thing with hybrids is that your IC engine shuts off at every stop sign, red light and bum that staggers out in front of your car.

Do you think shutting down and restarting your engine every few minutes is good or bad in terms of wear and tear?

347 204 Folks, take away CAFE standards, and we would have a VW diesel truck for around $12,000 right now

We'd have station wagons and mini trucks back. We'd have sub- $40,000 cars.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at May 02, 2025 05:01 PM (2VST

Yes, ending CAFE would hopefully end the era of cookie-cutter passenger vehicle shapes. It's boring seeing pretty-much the same four or five vehicles everywhere.

349 Jeez, maybe - I mean it would be great and incredible if we had like a bunch of representative people from each state who would like get together somewhere and like make a responsible budget with like real deficit reduction for the whole country? Maybe like incorporate all the Doge things they found were like totally fraudulent and eliminating them along with reforms? We'd probably have to pay these people to get together and do this, right? Might be worth trying I think?

Or just make a documentary detailing the minute by minute happenings to the like people of this country the second the interest payment on the debt isn't you know like made. Seems like it might get scary bad ya know? Aw well, probably not that important...

---------------

There are lots of Priuses that have gone multiple hundreds of thousands of miles without excessive engine wear issues. Apparently Toyota at least has this covered.
