In case you missed the sad news earlier today

Please say a prayer and raise a glass to our dear friend. Jim is one of the reasons I love the ONT so much. So much knowledge on a range of subjects and witty. Condolences to his wife, family, and friends. He will be missed.

A bit of riffing before we get to the regular ONT content. I originally had quick bits and links in mind for this section - but it has turned into a full-blown movie review.

Notes on China, Tariffs, U.S. Media Coverage, and Shipping

China's narrative and reported data (asshoe and lies) are as unreliable as ever. Their rhetoric, however is entirely predictable. They are peacocking about the tariffs and rolling out their usual propaganda with the Chinese people - who seem to be buying it for now. Xi and Beijing have internal concerns (we'll get to that in a link below), and I am not sure how Xi is going to game his way out the tariff situation. Already some civil disobedience percolating. Will we see broader unrest-another Tiananmen-style event? Perhaps.

Our legacy media continues to default to partisan spin on all things related to tariffs and China. Nearly every article advances the "Orange Man Bad" talking points-referring to "Trump Tariffs," warning that everything will cost more, or predicting widespread inventory shortages-rather than focusing on the fact that Trump is acting in the long-term best interest of the United States.

There is very little reporting and hard analysis out there about the economic pressure that the tariffs are putting on Xi and the CCP. China is in trouble. Difficult to find some decent links - I ended up with an article from Time? Sure, ok. It covers a lot of the China downside scenario(s).

Some of the problems China is facing with tariffs.

Eat bitterness? Sure, in the past when China was far poorer. But it now has the same middle-class ennui as the U.S. and the Communist party's legitimacy is largely based on an implied contract that it will improve living standards, not set them back. (Oh, and more than half of Chinese are now overweight, hardly a sign of asceticism.)

Another link that addresses some of the cracks in the Chinese economy and problems the tariffs are causing them.

But the numbers tell a different story. Despite intense government efforts to spark spending-including a "Special Action Plan" rolled out in March to subsidize purchases of cars, home appliances, and smartphones-Chinese consumers remain cautious. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) remained in negative territory through March, suggesting ongoing deflation. The Producer Price Index (PPI), a leading indicator of economic health, has been declining for 30 consecutive months. Even online shopping, once China's retail powerhouse, is now stagnating, with growth falling to just 7.2% last year.

Trump ending the de minimis exemption is a tranquilizer dart to the ass of Chinese E-Commerce.

A bit older link, but does a good enough job of laying things out.

White House link to the de minimis exemptions Not going to get into it heavily on the ONT, but there is a lot of chatter about smuggling synthetic opioids in these small packages.

Part of my day job is in the shipping container world. I see the real-time logistics and data behind the headlines. In March, there were approximately 1.5M containers sitting idle/on docks in China (larger than the typical March numbers). The container stack in China has grown through April as shippers have paused and cancelled sailings, and/or moved to smaller ships due to the slowed cargo flow/declining volumes.

Cancellations the past three weeks of 49% to 64% - Flexport reports a 60% drop in bookings the three weeks following Liberation Day. The tariff-free window is now closed as the final wave of tariff-free containers are arriving in the U.S. this week and next week (many on water, and/or queued at ports). The Chinese factories are still willing to build containers, but nobody is taking any orders as there are not enough bookings for all the boxes already built/sold. Fun, fun. On the retail side, we are about 3 weeks out from seeing some empty shelves. I received an email from Hong Kong while putting this post together.

Regret we are still unable to quote your order at this moment. Situation remains the same, very limited export going out of China and we are now seeing almost 20% of the boxes on-hired in March for USA being redirected to CAN or Europe.

For any that want to dive deeper/geek out, some links below.

Supply chain

Rates and Blanked Sailings

Canceled Sailings Tracker

World Container Index

China will lose. Their economy is too reliant on exporting to the U.S. Europe and the rest of the world cannot take enough of their 'junk' to absorb the drop off of the United States purchasing habits. Trump picked a battle he knew he could win. The media will go full spaz soon enough, but China has too much downside not to cut a deal.

Beyond the MoMee fun, where is the Horde off to this summer? Places you never tire of visiting? Or checking off somewhere new?

Cody is my favorite visit in the U.S. We will be in Wyoming in July. Dual trip - wedding of family friend and our anniversary.

The Cody Firearms Museum is a must see.

It's bucket-list-worthy for a reason. Immerse yourself in completely redesigned exhibits that house more than 4,000 firearms. It's the most comprehensive firearms museum in the United States, and it's reason enough to visit the Cody & Yellowstone area.

The Irma Hotel and restaurant. Come for whatever, but visit the bar.

Speaking of bars, the Horde should have a go at that in the comment section. Coolest bar or back bar (is that one word? nope, two) you have seen/put cheeks to chair. Outback Tavern in Pendleton, OR had a really old and cool back bar. What have you seen in your travels of consumption?

irma cody.jpg

Rodeo every night from June 1st through August 31st. American flags, bull riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling, and bronc riding.

Sometimes we get caught flat footed. Or your spouse, friend, family member, or someone in your orbit just gets you.

Needed a new ladder. Wife and I were shopping together. I picked one out (pictured below). My wife glanced at it, pointed to the "Max Weight" sticker, raised an eyebrow, tilted her head, smirked, and walked away.

No words. No comeback. Damnit.

Hit the comments with your recent, "Yep...they got me" moments.

Wasp season! Tried to find a video to go with this but there is nothing funny about watching someone get the wasp treatment - even if they were being a complete idiot.

And I looked, and behold, a 17.5oz can of wasp and hornet spray. And his name that wielded him was death. And hell followed him.

And then he jumped from the third rung of the ladder (pictured above), while spraying wildly. Once on the ground, running and swatting, with his ball cap. Because that's how he rolls. And escapes.

wasp death.jpg

Benefits of wasps? Yeah, I'm not seeing it.

I hate those flying bastiges of angry.

Subbed this evening in a three-man golf scramble league. One of my teammates had a hole in one from 213 yards. Five iron. Not too shabby! He did have his $5 in the pot, so he will be able to cover the drinks. One of the dumber rules in sports - buying everyone drinks - should be getting free drinks! Any of the Horde had a hole in one (in golf)?

If you play golf, you know. If you don't play golf, you've avoided a slow spiral into madness. Any model airplane flyers types out there? It too looks like a complicated and expensive hobby. Where is TRex?

*****

A bit of Donnie Iris. Pleasant guy, I had a couple of beers with him.

*****

A good chuckle. Below is a snip from an ActBlue email. Best read in your movie trailer voice. Or like a soap opera monologue.

Trump issued a memorandum targeting ActBlue, the platform that the DNC and many other campaigns and organizations use to collect contributions from supporters like you.

This is a blatant power grab designed to undermine democratic participation. It's a gross attempt to make it harder for Americans to make their voices heard - designed to stamp out the voices of grassroots supporters and further empower the corrupt billionaires who control the Trump administration.

Simply put, it's a direct attack on people like you who support Democrats' work.

Billionaires are already running our government, and now they're trying to get rid of tools that empower millions of grassroots donors to pitch in $5 or $10 at a time to help support Democrats across the country.

Here's the truth: Trump is panicking. His poll numbers are plummeting, he's driving the economy off a cliff, and he sees Democrats gaining momentum. He's scared about losing Congress next year - and losing his power - so he's rigging the system. But we won't be intimidated. We won't be silenced.

*****

This ONT is brought to you by reading the comments and curiosity. AoSHQ commenter Kindlot mentioned Terror Birds in the comment section in late March, and here we are!

Meet the prehistoric terror birds.

It has been recently shown that at least some phorusrhacids like Andalgalornis, while very fast runners in a straight line, were poor at tight turns at speed, which contradicts the idea of phorusrhacids being agile predators of small prey.

Serpentine! Serpentine!

15 >> There was a tv show called "Seven Days" - we recovered an alien time machine but it only goes seven days back in time.

Easy. Create a secret society to safeguard time machine until such time as mankind can unlock its secrets and build a time machine.

Now you can move back, 7 days at a time, with the plans, until mankind can build its own time machine, predating the discovery of the alien time machine.

Then keep pushing the state of knowledge back, until humans are the earliest species in our galaxy to create galaxy-conquering technology.

We love Cody, Wyoming too! So far we've made two visits there. Yes, it's touristy. Yes, it has expensive hotel rooms. Decent restaurants and a Wal-Mart. But it is renowned for having the bestest museums evah! Five museums under one roof at the Center of the West. Art, guns, local history, natural history, and a rotating exhibit on even more local/natural history stuff.

And if you are lucky, the fellah out front of the museum will be cooking cowboy beans and making Dutch oven biscuits by the chuck wagon. Free samples and information. It's a real treat!

41 re wasps:
I live in an older apartment complex, and my balcony/patio railings are wood.
Wasps (the boring-in kind) were colonizing them the first summer after I moved here, and it was very annoying to have them treat me like I was in their territory when I went outside.
I started seeing large bumblebees (the kind that fly right up to you and stare at you, but never DO anything to you) hanging out, and then chasing the wasps.
Later in the season, I noticed wasp larvae lying on the ground under the rail, so I started watching, and was rewarded with one day seeing a bee pitch one down, and start eating it while it was still moving.
This year, I have a whole fleet of guard bees, and no wasps.
Looked them up, and they are white faced carpenter bees--they fly up and look big, but that is the limit of their aggression, they don't sting. People just freak because they look like they're going to get in your face, but they're just looking. They don't even do that to me any more, they just bully the wasps away, or dig them out and kill their spawn.
Grandgirl was visiting a couple weeks ago, and when she came out with me a couple flew over to look at her, and she flinched a bit (cont)

Scampydog - you nailed it. If you're looking at the news from the *financial* press, all you get are items telling us that 'the US is bound to lose and China is unaffected and will win anyway, so can't Trump just cut a deal already?' The press wants Trump to cut a deal in the next 60 days or else we're doomed. Complete BS. They are on China's side. I don't see us cutting a deal until the end of the year, and I don't see the big rush to do so sooner, unless China comes to the table first.

China has a real estate crisis that makes the US mortgage collapse look like a walk in the park. The only think keeping that house of cards up is a government-backed cash infusion of billions of dollars -- going on for years now. We're 40% of their economy - at least.

59 One of the reasons I say Stirling the big black cat earned his keep his first summer is that he spotted no less than three wasps that had gotten into my place somehow, and spotted them before they could attack me. I killed each one and gave him a kitty treat and petting each time to make up for taking away his prey. (I didn't want them stinging him.)

They possibly were coming in through a gap in the hood vent over the stove, where the pipe passes through the overhead cabinet. We sealed that up solidly and have not seen any more wasps.

67 Bertram, first summer I used oil of peppermint solution in a squirt bottle on the wasps, and occasionally would hit a bee chasing it by accident.

75 The first part of my finances has been secured, and I should see the second part within nine or ten days. With that done I can plan my trip to Indiana and Kentucky. It's later, and warmer, than I planned to go, but so be it.

The car is ready -- though I do want to have the battery tested to see how it's holding up. The unit is two years old; the previous one died without warning at about that age, as did the one before that. The Buick has a lot of electronics. I turn off everything I can before I leave the car, but no doubt there's still some draw on the battery.

I'll pass through suburban Birmingham on my way, stop at the famous pipe shop The Briary, and gas up at the Buc-ee's on my way north.

135 If anyone is looking for a lovely bed and breakfast in [semi] upstate New York, I highly recommend the Albergo Allegria. Beautiful Victorian mansion, and marvelous breakfasts (they have their own kitchen garden, and wife and co-owner is a fine cook). I took refuge with them in the spring of 2020 for a weekend, escaping NYC, and they were laid-back and welcoming. The host is Australian, and we soon bonded as Cvd sceptics and Trump fans.

I asked on the phone when booking my room whether they would make guests wear masks, and he said that was up to the individual. When the other guests saw I wasn't wearing a bondage mask, they hesitantly, then with an air of relief, took theirs off, too, and we all had a fine time.

Comfortable, charming rooms, and Windham, NY, is a very pretty Catskills town, with ski slopes nearby for winter sport. They're on my mind because they showed up in my OneDrive memories of this day.

143 I'm seeing another ridiculous event in local politics. While local offices are nominally non-partisan they...aren't.

In a neighboring town they had a vote last year to increase taxes by an absurd amount nominally to fund the schools which failed because based on town rules the people got to vote on it not the elected officials.

One of the candidates running in this cycle made the centerpiece of her campaign that she supported that failed tax increase. Someone did a FOIA request to get her voting record though and showed she did not bother to vote when the tax increase was on the ballot and then this person posted Candidate Liar's voting record anonymously to facebook.

Well, the leftists that run the town facebook page were not upset that Candidate Liar lied. But they were upset someone got a hold of her voting record and then they broke their own rules to reveal who the anonymous poster was, who is a notable local conservative and now they are all aghast at that local conservative voter. How dare a voter see if a candidate was lying or not!

PS: This isn't me or my town, I just like following politics in a town more dysfunctional then my own.
Its...comical.

149 It's been told that if you take a small paper bag and wad it up into a ball, stuff it into a nook or cranny where wasps congregate, they'll leave.

Because the wadded up paper looks, to them, like a wasp nest and they won't build a nest near another one.

It does work. Factors are the color of the paper, the size of the ball you wad up and, of course, where you put it.

169 The surviving relatives of the Phorusrhacids are the South American Seriamas, which have the hooked toe claw, and are mostly ground hunters. They use the hooked claw to hold down their prey so they can tear it up to eat. They subdue or kill their prey, mostly small lizards and rodents, by flinging them against hard ground. There are some videos of them trying to "kill" golf balls which is hilarious, since the balls bounce all over the place. (I always wanted a six foot carnivorous bird with a beak like a parrot)

186 Best gun collection I’ve seen is the Fuller Collection at the Chickamauga Visitors Center, even more fun because we were visiting the battlefield and didn’t even know this was there. Claims to have a working copy of every rifle or musket ever used in North America, starting with a Spanish Arquebus from the early 1500’s. Somehow this collection got all of the pattern guns given to the Patent Office in the 1800’s; amazing how many wild multi-shot ideas were tried. A collection of over 2,000 weapons, many of them unique. Incredible.

187 Scampydog, email sent. Cody is about three hours away from us. In Wyoming you drive that far to meet for lunch.

My SLC to Cody itinerary depending on SLC arrival time. Drive to Vernal Utah to spend the first night. A couple of hours from SLC. Cute little town, very Americana. Or drive out to Dinosaur National Monument. A three hour fascinating stop. From there you can pop into Wyoming and run up the Green River through Flaming Gorge, stunning scenery and land in Rock Springs. Off to Jackson. And through Yellowstone to Cody.

Heh. I have been trying to find a horn ring for Scampydog. My Pontiac friend in Helena did not have one, other than the one in his driver wagon, which he is loath to part with, for understandable reasons...

But... a friend here in Alberta bought an American Pontiac, which had had a Nova clip installed, and a Nova steering column. Car is being rebuilt as a Canadian Pontiac, which is quite different. But the American pontiac body had a box full of parts in the trunk, possibly including a horn ring. Waiting on news.

200 Speaking of wasps, several years ago a coworker and I were waiting for our lunch at a food truck when I noticed the largest yellowjacket I've ever seen on the back of a lady's dress. Her dress left her shoulders bare and the damn thing was slowly crawling up the dress and I was afraid of what would happen once she felt it on her bare skin. I didn't want her to freak out by telling her what was going on and having it sting her through the thin dress, so the only thing I could do is watch. Thankfully it flew away before any damage was done, but it was a nervous several minutes. I was surprised no one else present said a word.

Also, I was stung several times on the upper back by a baby yellowjacket while clearing out my backyard. It hurt like hell but it could have been worse. I'd made the mistake of letting the backyard get overgrown due to seeing a rattle snake molting earlier that summer and not wanting to deal with that, and the yellowjackets decided to set up shop in a corner. Said yellowjackets tried building several nests in the overhang and I had to spray those annoying pests repeatedly that summer to make them go away. Thankfully they haven't been back since then.

Cicero, I forgot he lived up in the OC too. Later he lived here, I know about exactly where, in Clairemont. His stories of crazy canyon bike riding hijinks certainly rang familiar bells. The one time he visited here recently I was out of town, so never met him. Corresponded a bit by email.

254 Muldoon, it's heartening to see what's happening at NIH and FDA (not that it's surprising, given the new management). Wondering whether the bad inertia the new boys are up against is similar to that faced at DOJ, DOD, State, etc. And as in those cases, how much "sustainable" (heh) progress can be made in returning to science and common sense (and purging totalitarian arrogance) can be made in 4 short years.

ao DaShuai 东北进修🇨🇳

The Chinese air force fly over the peaks of Karakoram and Himalayas in Kashmir, Pakistan. Our blood pact is written beneath.

In 1966, 200 Chinese, 800 Pakistanis sacrificed their lives to connect our 2 countries via the Karakoram Highway.

Today, the Indian are claiming that piece of land as theirs. Emboldened by their vassalage to the US, they may feel confident to start a war in the region.

But rest assured, if they do, missiles and glide bombs will rain down on them from skies above these border regions, and the Indians won't even know who's hitting them.

This is why our anti-India campaign will shine in the borderless air domain, we can provide assistants from beyond the horizon.

From kinetic assistants like bombs and missiles, to intelligence and signals support from our network of satellites and AWACS.

Therein lies the ultimate weakness of India in South Asia, they don't have any friends in the region. Due to Modi's imperialistic policies, everyone hates them.

In the basement is a full blown Bier Garten with a live Oompa Band (including accordion, because...why not?). Bathrooms have the patented speibecken (puke basin for your novices). The entire basement is lined with long tables so getting into conversations with complete strangers from all over the world is a must. Liter mugs of "cold" Hoff Brau Hi-test with the occasional fried Hähnchen (that's chicken) to sop up the suds and make more possible. I happened to be visiting my past college roommate who was a Capt. in the Army stationed in the Fulda Gap at the time. He and his buddies taught me how to parachute off a table top.

Pete Bog - if you're still here - if you have time Grand Teton is worth a stop especially the view from Jenny Lake Lodge - I think your entry ($30) gets you into both parks unless you have the old fart pass.

The road from Yellowstone to Cody requires some extra driving mindfulness the first hour or so. Nothing to be afraid of. You'll pass the Buffalo Bill Reservoir and dam on your right. Visitor Center was worth a stop.

317 "Oh f*ck" was my immediate response to this post. Before I opened it a fleeting thought went thru my head, I wonder if Jim SND has died. No idea why that crossed my mind.

Of course that is the wrong reaction, Jim is now at peace and no longer bound by the limitations of his failing body. It is however a very human reaction to the loss we experience.

You all know what a great guy Jim was. But what you don't know is back in 2020 when I busted my ankle up good Jim emailed me about rehab for that. He had been roofing, fell thru a hidden skylight and busted his ankle good. He simply wanted to help someone else by reaching out and sharing his knowledge.

Jim was always on my list of Morons I need to meet in person before I die. I'm tearing up writing this and am praying for his wife and loved ones.

RIP Jim Sunk New Dawn.

I don't think this worry applies to this situation.

If a nuclear power nukes a non-nuclear power and essentially gets away with it (which seems likely because who, that is otherwise disinterested, is going to volunteer to pick a fight with someone that has just used nuclear weapons?), that's one thing, and sure others might follow suit.

But if two countries exchange nukes, I think that immediately increases deterrence between nuclear powers.

Heh! I just looked up cardboard bin boxes on Amazon. Even the cheap-ass ones from Chy-nah are over a dollar apiece. I have made my own from 1/8" sheet plywood or masonite, with ends of 3/8 plywood. Set up the table saw, and run off a dozen or so in a few minutes. Assemble with glue and an air stapler, and they are far stronger than the cardboard ones, and cost pennies each, since the wood is salvage. Roughly 4X4X12"
So easy to make, too.

India has about 600 distinct languages, dialects, and sub-dialects.

English is an Official Language in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

Use of the Colonial language is necessary to have a multi-ethnic-lingual country without one or another language and associated religion or culture or caste being imposed by violence.

393 Back when I was young and stupid, I spent a whole lot more time on the blogs, commenting and writing. For some reason, Jim noticed me. At one point, we got into a discussion about cigars, and he sent me a box of cigars and a three finger cigar carrier. I still have that carrier, and I still use it. When my wife had surgery in Texas, he drove from Galveston to meet us. We went to cigar shops and gun ranges, and he introduced me to fried pickles. He was a good man, and my existence is better for having known him.

@TimesAlgebraIND 1h
BIG NEWS All Indian pilots and fighter jets involved in #OperationSindoor have returned safely to base.

Pakistan’s Defense Minister says "We will certainly talk with India if these hostilities come to an end"

After spreading fake News, Pak Defense Minister took a U turn and said no Indian soldiers were taken prisoners.

MASSIVE VICTORY for India !!
and
Pakistan declares Emergency after India's military strikes

@TimesAlgebraIND 22m

Pakistan stock exchange plunges 6,200 points after India's strikes.

MASSIVE LOSS for Pakistan !!

Meanwhile, Indian stock market is stable.
Headquarters of Jaish E Mohammed completely wiped out in Indian strikes. As per News reports some family members (terrorists) of Masood Azhar also ki**ed in Indian strikes

OK, really cashing out.

424 "Life really isn't fair, and nobody owes me anything."

You are right. Life isn't fair. I won't go into details but I should be dead several times over. I'm pleasantly surprised that I made it to 60 when I tried everything I possible could to not make that milestone.

On purpose.

Now that I have spent the last 20 years recovering from one malady or another, I am getting paid back. I just had back surgery a month ago and my doctor says I'm still not strong enough to start rehab. Oh well. I sit and waut.

In the meantime, wanna see what the surgery area of my back looks like now? It's effen gross, if I do say so myself. Which I just did.

Got same problem here, except house has metal siding. Supposed I'd need to fill the holes with something, after removing the shutters... Yeah, wasps under all of them!

I spray with high-pressure water couple of times a year but would be better if they just didn't have those places to nest.

Not to mention I've also had 2 double eagles. Keep hacking away morons those holes in one don't happen unless you're losing golf balls.
