Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Q1 GDP drops 0.3%, first contraction in 3 yearsMostly because of a huge jump in imports. I mean...huge. -5% GDP change just because of the imports. The decline was driven by a large surge in imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP. Imports surged at an annualized rate of 41.3% in the first quarter as companies front-loaded orders ahead of anticipated tariffs from the Trump administration. The surge in imports was good for a -5% contribution to the GDP calculation in the first quarter.Other than that, how were things? Honestly...good. Final sales of goods to domestic purchasers, another sign of demand in the economy, grew at a 3% annualized rate in the first quarter, above the 2.9% seen in the fourth quarter of 2024.And, remember, this is all happening while inflation is crashing to the point of touching on deflation. From a couple of weeks ago: U.S. consumer prices fall for first time in almost three years U.S. consumer prices dipped in March, defying predictions that Trump's proposed tariffs would trigger higher inflation. The decline in the Consumer Price Index marks the first monthly drop in nearly three years--and only the second since inflation spiked under former President Biden. Key Details: March's 0.1% decline in overall prices came as a surprise to economists, who had expected a 0.1% increase. Core prices--excluding food and energy--rose by just 0.1%, well below the 0.3% that had been forecast.Which means that consumer spending is increasing...while prices are decreasing. The increase isn't because of inflation. Weird, huh? I can't find mention of government spending in that first Yahoo article, so I searched out and saw this on the actual BEA release: The decrease in real GDP in the first quarter primarily reflected an increase in imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP, and a decrease in government spending. These movements were partly offset by increases in investment, consumer spending, and exports. For more information, refer to the "Technical Notes" below. So, essentially...this is kind of exactly what I imagined early Trump, post-Biden would be. A small contraction in the GDP measures while the economy itself actually does okay while waiting for longer-term effects to settle in. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

to quote Tom Luongo on the GDP:
GDP is a bullshit statistic, esp. with Government spending added to the final number, a number that can only be positive with deficit spending, otherwise government spending is net extractive of the productive economy. It's GNS, Gross National Spending. Spending is at best a 2nd derivative of output. It says nothing about the quality of that spending, how much went to future investment, etc. It only aggregates the total amount. Posted by: Kindltot at April 30, 2025 12:09 PM (D7oie) 18

I don't know if I've ever de-willowed someone but this is a good a shot as any:
--------- Lots of blackouts in Europe. But the real story is that the grid frequency got so low that the entire continent almost went down. That's what you get when you listen to Angela and Greta. Can't wait until the UK blocks out the sun. The EU is on a path to ruin. Led by faceless gnomes, they're struggling to keep the lights on while Muslims are reaching the critical mass needed to take over.the juice to pursue AI dreams that will require losts over. Meanwhile in the US I'm happy to report what I only know because of my day job. Trump has a massive deregulatory effort that's so far below the radar that it's stealth. It builds on favorable SCOTUS decisions in recent years. especially last year's decision in Loper Bright. This is both nerdish and momentous. New York's own Lee Zeldin is a key player at the EPA. It's intended to reverse 40 years of regulatory bloat in the US. We'll have a huge competitive advantage over the EU. We only need to keep the lights on. Apparently, CATO's analysis of the 2018 tariffs saw a $7 billion increase on $250 billion in imports. Statistical noise that never actually showed up for consumers. Also, when people scream that tariffs are inflationary, I roll my eyes. Increased prices without actual monetary supply movement (actual cause of inflation), it's actually a deflationary move. Just think of the standard supply/demand curve. It makes the price go up, so demand goes down. That's deflationary, if anything. Re: "The decline was driven by a large surge in imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP.”
Misleading at best. Spending on imports shows up in the accounts for domestic consumption. So they are subtracted on the right side of the national-income-accounts equation — Y = C+I+G +/- (X-M) — to correct numbers to reflect DOMESTIC production, as in GDP. You could look it up ... It's GNS, Gross National Spending. Spending is at best a 2nd derivative of output. It says nothing about the quality of that spending, how much went to future investment, etc. It only aggregates the total amount.
Posted by: Kindltot ------ True. There is actually an alternative way to figure GDP that is not used because the data to calculate it is much more involved. For the most part, macroeconomics as in cause-effect relationships is problematic enough due to 2nd, 3rd, etc order effects, that other measures are probably better to calculate national well being. Rousseau was a stone cold bastard and proto Commie, but his measurement of good economic policy was basically where the people in general were wealthier, healthier, and lived longer plus positive growth in the native population aka babies. But, like most things, we are stuck with GDP simply because there is no other generally accepted measure worldwide in macroeconomics. 206 Are we sure Trump knows what he's doing? I mean, this has got to be another one of those 4D chess moves he's so famous for right? Only the Left is brainwashed, right?
Right? Posted by: Tinfoil Dispenser at April 30, 2025 12:46 PM (ERYKL) What is Trump doing that is a 4D chess move here? This is just a campaign promise that he's following through on. Shifting production from China to the US will obviously negatively impact GDP numbers. We all knew that going in to it. A trade war will also negatively impact both our exports and imports. That's kind of the goal here if you haven't been paying attention. We want GDP to drop as spending across government, consumers, and businesses are reduced because we're reigning in cheap money that leads to inflation and we're on-shoring industries. That will mean a stronger dollar and stronger middle class. Since we're the worlds reserve currency, that will mean we export less. With tariffs, we import less. We create massive industry growth in the US, which leads to a more prosperous middle class, and the only ones hurt in this deal are Wall Street bankers and export-heavy industries like airplane manufacturing. But, SOR refilling, time from oil to gas through refineries, futures contracts, and individual gas stations clinging to higher prices, and it'll take some time. The drop was pretty quick. The places to watch for lower prices will probably be wholesaler stores like Costco. They seem to have policies of selling certain items at precise margins which see their gas prices fall faster than others. TMJ, excellent post, and excellent idea about taking the G out of the traditional GDP calculation (or at least routinely reporting GDP with, and without, G spending).
If you subtract the (wildly, recklessly spendthrift) guvamint spending of the last 4 years (actually commencing with the reckless, disastrous "stimulus" during The Great Idiocy, for which Trump bears some responsibility), the dead-flat economy becomes easier to see. Same same for the employment figures - almost entirely guvamint hiring, and "health care" (= mostly guvamint hiring, in effect). Yet look at the equities markets the last 4 years. Their relationship to underlying economic activity and overall economic health has been diminishing for years, but the transformation into little more than a side effect of monetary policy + government borrowing/spending is kind of stark. Seems to me that already exists. It's the national finances of the US government, overseen by the Congress and executive (with major mixed impact from Fed policies). Who decides what a sovereign wealth fund does with its $? Right. One more way in which non-market forces would affect our economy. It's one thing for tiny states like Norway or the UAE to find places to park their oil wealth. But the US? Any money deemed extra by the Treasury should be used to buy down debt and "pay for" tax reductions. Posted by: rhomboid at April 30, 2025 01:05 PM (1m82a) 309

It's true. I think I had a crush on three different Jennifers at one point. I only approached one and she looked at me like I was a cockroach that had just crawled on her sandwich. Sort of soured me on the other two. She was a slut anyway.

It seems like no one is seeing a decrease in gas prices other than South Texas, though.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison. Urban areas are in the switch mode at refineries from winter to summer blends for EPA which are specific to each urban non attainment zone. That is a particularly stupid and time bound regulation nowadays that causes consumers to pay more for no environmental benefit whatsoever. All modern cars take into account temperatures, etc. by more sophisticated emissions monitoring and no longer require oxygenating the fuel which applied to cars roughly before OBD II was standard. FWIW, I cannot remember if a statute mandates oxygenating fuel in the last major Clean Air Act revision in the 90's. I do remember that one particular petro additive turned out to be an environmental disaster so it was dropped by the EPA. Posted by: whig at April 30, 2025 01:08 PM (ctrM5) 314

is a U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of California, Department - Courtroom 4. She was nominated to the court by President Joe Biden on September 20, 2021, and confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 17, 2021. ...
On April 30, 2025, Judge Thurston issued a ruling that Border Patrol agents in the Eastern District of California cannot arrest individuals suspected of being in the country illegally without a warrant or reasonable suspicion that the person might flee before a warrant can be obtained. Additionally, the ruling states that Border Patrol agents cannot deport immigrants through "voluntary departure" unless the person's rights are explained and they agree to leave. I am not sure that Hawaiian coffee production can match total American demands, so American coffee drinkers are stuck with trying to find mostly imported coffee at a price that is acceptable for the quality supplied.
Contrast that with the case for tea drinkers. Almost all tea in the USA is imported. There are small tea plantations here and there in the US, but only the Bigelow Tea Company has any sizable production. They supply American grown Classic American Tea to the White House. You can also get this under a Sam’s Club brand. But really most tea here is imported. I am willing to pay a reasonable amount extra due to tariffs to get a good strong tea. Most Americans brew a weak tea, maybe that’s part of why Americans drink so much strong coffee. If you want a strong cup with some teas you need to use two teabags for a cup, not one, or the equivalent for loose tea. I always double up for Twinings teas, but don’t need to with a stronger tea like PG tea (my current favorite). What can I say, I had a grandmother who was an Anglophile, who lived in England for a while in the 50s, and who taught me how to brew tea the English way with a double boil, and so forth. Puerto Rico grows some excellent coffee. Almost all is consumed locally. Not enough volume and too expensive production cost to be competitive for mass export.

"And...one must always remember that this is coupled with Trump's promised attempts to try and eliminate the income tax on people making less than $200,000 per year. He's trying to replace one tax (onerous, invasive, anti-liberty) with another (directed at foreigners)."
In effect, the tariffs will replace an income tax with a consumption tax - though a consumption tax that is aimed at foreign producers rather than domestic ones. Given that "progressives" have been pining for a VAT in this country for as long as I can remember, they should be happy with this. Of course, they won't be, because Trump. I like the Republic of Tea's offering, in particular their Earl Greyer blend - it has more bergamon than the usual Earl Grey, hence the name. I find that if I drop the tea bag into a cup of water and then nuke it for two minutes, it makes a good strong cup - perhaps not the mahogany brown brew that the Brits like, but plenty strong enough for my taste. For a stronger cup, nuke it a big longer, or let the cup stand for a bit before drinking. Posted by: Nemo at April 30, 2025 01:29 PM (4RPgu) 325
Latest round of rain has begun here. I left last night's accumulation (1-1/2") in the gauge so I can get a 24-hour total without doing the math.
Furnace and A/C have shot caps. Knew this was coming, so I've been saving up for it and won't need to borrow to finance it. But there went my emergency fund for a while. Gas here is $2.30. It helps when your state is floating on a pool of oil. And that's the news from Oklahoma. Posted by: creeper at April 30, 2025 01:34 PM (zFwIe) Processing 0.06, elapsed 0.0607 seconds. |
