18 Sing a song of sixpence,
A pocket full of rye.
Four and twenty blackbirds,
Baked in a pie.

When the pie was opened,
The birds began to sing;
Wasn’t that a dainty dish,
To set before the king?

The king was in his counting house,
Counting out his money;
The queen was in the parlour,
Eating bread and honey.

20 The term eat crow is uniquely American in origin. Its first known use dates back to the 19th century when eating a crow required intense boiling to make it palatable. But, even then, it was like eating garbage because they’re carrion-eating birds, so their meat is disgusting.

But there are tons of theories and stories about how this saying came to be. Some claim it came about during the early 19th century with hunting parties. They’d make bets on who’d get the most kills, and the loser had to shoot and eat a crow.

There’s also a running joke from the 1800s where a man said he could literally eat anything, and to settle a bet, he agreed to eat crow meat. He had a hard time swallowing his words as well as the meat but suffered through it just to prove his point.

52 This is one of those ones where the more you look, the less you're impressed. Feels wooden and as if rendered from a concept the artist had in mind rather than actual still life. He's got the palette down and the general shapes, but the more you look, the stiffer the subjects get -- like they've been rendered from individual scenes and then composited. There's no detail in the open peach, the draping on that leading edge of the table clings too much to the surface and looks fake, the shape of the peach serving platter is weirdly oblong...

Sorry to be complain-y. For some reason, stuff like this annoys me.

112 Coming in to work on Monday mornings I see the carnage left around my building from the weekend. Big ass crows that have ripped apart the pigeons that roost around our parking structure. I never knew that crows would eat pigeons but yes they do and it is pretty ugly as they leave a lot of "bloody parts" for the rest of us to see.

Hello, B,

Yes! Today is the beginning of Month Two. I used to post more on Ace *before* I retired, huh? I'm usually out running errands in the morning and miss the Art Thread, and in the afternoon I'm dealing with emails and trying to construct a new story for one of Raconteur's anthologies. Once my finances are all secured (I should have begun the process a month before I retired), I'll take my trip to Indiana and Kentucky.

125 Well...yesterday was...fun.

Dolley got it in her craw that we all need to get Global Entry in preparation for our Italy trip.

She's had it for about a year. Now, it's time for me an the boys.

I've done the online portion. The Charlotte airport has a Global Entry office for the interview (essentially just verifying your identity to a DHS officer, including fingerprinting), so I set out the second Junior got back from school to hit our appointments, three in a row, 10 minutes each, starting at 3:40.

Get in the car, GPS says we should get there at 3:42, ten minutes longer than expected. Well, crap. Oh well, gotta try to shave off minutes.

Holy shit...this is the first time I've dealt with Charlotte rush hour traffic since I've moved here. It...sucks...It's Atlanta bad.

3:42 climbed up to 3:45 for no reason. I had to take a backroad just to get to the Interstate. Suddenly, 3:45 is climbing up to 3:50. I see a lot of red ahead of my on the route. It's getting worse. Ask for alternate routes. Get off half a mile later to shave off 8 minutes. Instant savings.

Instant regret.

I'm not the only one with the idea. 8 minute savings becomes 8 minute delay. (cont)

Posted by: TheJamesMadison, smashy-smashy with Godzilla at May 01, 2025 10:01 AM (GBKbO)

126 Finally get to the airport parking deck. I've prepaid. This should be easy. I've followed the right signs.

System says I'm at the wrong parking lot.

Shit.

I don't have time for this. Pay for parking right there. Eventually find a spot. Pick up Second Junior and carry him so we can go faster. Go down a set of stairs only to realize...I had to go up to get to the bridge.

I've memorized where the global entry office should be...but will it be good enough? Directions can suck.

Well, that's when it finally began to work in my favor because the directions were spot on.

And, surprise of all surprises, the DHS officer was cool with us showing up late, pronounced our last name correctly on the first try, and just went through the whole thing for all three of us in 10 minutes.

Then...all that was left was the 80 minute drive home?!

Here's the thing.

Unemployment going up needs to be put in the context of it counting only people who are ACTIVELY looking for work. There could very well be a situation where people dropped out of the labor market due to not finding job opportunities, but when they perceive the economy turning around will reenter the labor market.

Not saying that's the case here, necessarily, but it is a factor that needs to be considered. I always looked at MoM Unemployment changes against the total jobs in the market to kind of gauge who is dropping out.

The 241k number the left is freaking out over is a 1 week data point t. It’s the number of people who filed for UE benefits. It’s jumped a little from last week. But the week to week number bounced around all the time. The more valid number is a 4 week moving average which has consistently been in the 220k range for the last few months. And that number is a historically low number.

Even 250k would be considered a healthy number. It’s when you start getting close to 300k that it gets into “oh shit” territory.

180 Speaking of things that save time, I commend the locker service at Lowe's.

You pick out what you want on the website and pay for it. They pull your items and put them in a locker just inside the store entrance. When you get there, you scan the bar code from their email on your phone. The correct locker pops open automatically, you grab your shizzle and walk right out the door.

Nifty.

Obviously this isn't going to work if you're buying two-bys or sheets of plywood or something, but it's a serious time saver if you have several smaller purchases.

The reason I always hated the "all else equal" assumption is that all else is, in fact, not equal. Everything is connected to everything else.

Jobless claims remaining static and unemployment rates changing provides context for other metrics.

263 Failed Democrat presidential candidate Kamala Harris looks around America today and sees a whirlwind of change driven by Donald Trump’s triumphant return to the White House. She told supporters Wednesday night she doesn’t like it. No, not one bit.

264 Crows are incredibly loud. Most bird calls sound musical but Crows sound like they are yelling at you. A couple of weeks ago there was a pair of crows on the terrace. One was eating a dead bird. Every time the other one got close, it would pick up the carrion and carry it out of reach.
I do not like crows.

277 When the girl spawn was about 10 yrs old.....We went out to do some maintenance on the flower beds around the porch. Spreading mulch pulling weeds. Found a big black snake had come to visit and had wound itself around the porch rail. Hubbymayhem does NOT like snakes. I just saw it, said, well then, who might you be? Snake didn't answer but looked at me while I took his picture which was nice. Girl came out and saw the snake. Says wow! And stood six inches from it playing stare eyes with a snake. Now the girl was good at stare eyes but snake was a champion! Hubbymayhem came out and managed to not freak out about his child being six inches from a huge snake but kept his distance. He muttered at me what the fuck are we gonna do about this. Girl lost stare eyes contest, I pulled snake off railing and carried him to the shed and encouraged him to go under there. Gave him the "if you're going to stay, you're going to work on mouse population control". He seemed unimpressed. My cousin said empty all chambers and burn the shed. Hubbymayhem agreed.
