Austin Merrill Mecklem (1890–1951) was an American artist. He did mural projects for the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression era before settling down in the artist colony at Woodstock, New York. One of his works, Old Town in Alaska, is in the Wrangell, Alaska post office.

Back in the late 90's I was working in West Virginia, not far from the Ohio River. One morning there was this loud noise, like thunder. It turned out to be the Shell petrochemical plant on the other side of the river blowing up. For two days these weird ashes would fall, sort of spiral, hairy looking stuff.
Later, like 6 months or so, everyone's vehicle that was parked outside and got covered with this stuff needed a new paint job. Rumors abound about the health effects. I stayed inside as much as possible. The resultant class action suit forced the plant to close. A similar story as many plants on the "mid-Ohio River" were shuttered during the 90's and 2000's. ”Varney the Vampire” is the actual title of a Victorian Penny Dreadful, something like the type of paperback you used to find on the spinner rack at the old five and dime, only this was so far back the price was, you guessed it, one English penny. I know this book because I checked out a modern copy from a university library and read it. It lived up to its reputation.

May 6, 1937: The Hindenburg disaster occurred on May 6, 1937, in Lakehurst, New Jersey. The Hindenburg was a German commercial passenger-carrying rigid airship, the lead ship of the Hindenburg class, the longest class of flying machine and the largest airship by volume. Filled with hydrogen, it caught fire and was destroyed during its attempt to dock with its mooring mast at Naval Air Station Lakehurst. The accident caused 35 fatalities among the 97 people on board and an additional fatality on the ground.
The publicity shattered public confidence in the giant, passenger-carrying rigid airship and marked the abrupt end of the airship era. Oh, the humanity. Posted by: Cheri at May 06, 2025 10:12 AM (oiNtH) Posted by: Anna Puma at May 06, 2025 10:12 AM (Zf1k9) 144
81 Would YOU eat a fish out of that cove?
Posted by: nurse ratched I was part of an inspection team of a mostly unregulated mining operation in the Balkans. Crushed ore was washed with a cyanide solution to remove silver and lead, I believe. When I asked where the liquid waste went, they happily took me to their "containment". It was a small pond of impossibly bright bluish-green "water", with a pipe at the far end pumping the black sludge waste in. PH strips placed it around 11, so bleach-territory. The heavy metals and other toxic particulate matter would settle, and the liquid would rise. If it rose high enough, it went out an overflow pipe directly into the nearby Ibar river. When the sediment filled the pond completely, it would be abandoned, and a new pond started. The liquid topping the old pond would evaporate, exposing the years of accumulated toxic sediment, which would then dry out and slowly erode, blown by the wind as toxic dust all over the area. Cancer rates are kinda high in the area. Weird. That was 2018. Posted by: Military Moron at May 06, 2025 10:12 AM (JCZqz) 145
When I did Workers Comp law I did a lot of defense work regarding asbestos. The workers used to take asbestos out of bags and make it into balls and have "snowball" fights . Early in my career I took a guy's testimony who worked at a bathroom tile plant when the tiles contained a lot of asbestos and he definitely had asbestosis. He grew up in Poland and at 14 was captured by the Soviets and taken to Siberia to chop wood. Very few survived . He did, then joined the British army and fought in the Holy Land. He then came to the US and worked at the tile company for forty years. Died a week after I took his testimony. Amazing story

Kind of an odd painting. It was the depths of the Depression and might have been seen as hopeful activity and employment. But the scene itself is grim, gray, and the style is almost primitive. And while there are signs of human activity (the smoke stacks, the train moving, etc.) there are no people. Not the kind of WPA art I usually think of with sunlit scenes of agricultural activity and cheerfulness.

And yesterday was International Gilbert & Sullivan Day. I should have settled down and listened to either Iolanthe or The Yeomen of the Guard.
My favorite Gilbert and Sullivan song as a child was “We Sail the Ocean Blue” from HMS Pinafore, which we children had in 45 rpm, and which I would play over and over on a beige metal case phonograph player, which thinking back on it must have been designed as a portable (this was the early 1960s). I believe it could play 33 and 1/3 records, too (with the lid open) but no other speeds. It had an adaptor, built in IIRC, that allowed both sizes. The speaker was mono and built-in to the case. We children were only given 45s, but some of them quite “educational” like the G&S. It was only years later that I saved up enough money from my allowance to by a Beatles 45. It was “Lady Madonna” with the flip side being Harrison’s “Inner Light”. I still have it out in the den with other records from the pre CD era. I have a hunch that the disaffection with Fetterman goes deeper than just "hurr durr he a jooo luvver". I think their problem is that he actually treats MAGA as a simple adversarial political position. He tends to engage in real back and forth, saying where he agrees and where he doesn't, and why, instead of the typical leftie asshole smoke grenade FUD cloud of lies and demonization.
If you allow one of your own to clearly articulate what your own position and what the other position is, well, gosh darn it, the herd might go off the reservation. I could be full of shit. The best thing to do with asbestos tile, if it is still in good condition and not friable, is leave it alone. It actually might help in case of fire. But no, when they find it, they have to tear it out and replace it with non-asbestos tiles at great expense (because of all the abatement procedures). I think it partly a scam, particularly when done on the government dime. They replaced the floor tile in the early 70s building the Physics department was in and used state money. Quite a bother. Didn’t tell them about the asbestos embedded material (not friable, and impervious to all sorts of chemical and fire related attacks) that I had in my lab area sink. It was still there when when I retired along with a large chalkboard with chalk, not a whiteboard with markers. I think I had the last chalkboard in the department. Terrible for optics experiments, but I wasn’t doing optics there.
