8 Willowed from the ONT -

653 530 …Apparently there is a gender distinction in Japanese_

Missed this at the time, but a proper Japanese woman speaks in keigo, formal speech. She is speaking deferentially to those of higher status: such as men in most of Japanese society. She may not really mean any deference, but she will give lip service to it, unless you are the scum of the earth. Then she would use “rough” language, the way men typically speak to women. Their are gradations: polite speech versus honorific speech, etc. Even a high ranking man would use honorific speech to say, the Emperor. You also speak with deference to your commanding officer in the JSDF. It’s not just gender.

9 Silly tech joke:

As we waited for a bus in the frosty weather, the woman next to me mentioned that she makes a lot of mistakes when texting in the cold. I nodded knowingly. “It’s the early signs of typo-thermia.” ~

I saw your earlier note about your surgery. Will pray for your healing. I also appreciated your note about your mother who was an English professor. Mine was too , and encouraged me to read some classics such as "Morte D"Arthur" etc. I think it was a great blessing to grow up before the computer age and to have parents who encouraged reading- except now I have too many books. Sigh!

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at April 29, 2025 04:51 AM (S3UDX)

14 Of course you may use informal language I Japanese with dear friends if you consider each other to be equal. But even in family, parents will speak down to children, while proper children will speak with deference to parents, and also to espected elders. Breaking these rules is fairly common but really an art form that few outsiders master. Foreigners are taught to use polite speech with anyone you don’t know very well and the transition to informal speech is fraught with peril.

22 BOING!

Back from a big shop with Mrs. BD. Israel Independence Day coming up on Thursday. Hot dogs, hamburgers and drumsticks.

The IAF was practicing flybys all day yesterday over Jerusalem but I missed them all, being mostly at my desk.

Coming out of the supermarket an hour ago, a trio of F-15s did a low flyby just the the side of the parking lot, with one peeling off to head over another part of Jerusalem before returning to formation.

Was it just last week that the Orville and Wright flight anniversary took place?

35 Oracle and the 5 day outage at the 45 hospitals:

"Despite this being a major outage, our hospitals were able to maintain services with no material impact," the spokesperson said. "We are proud of our clinical and support teams who worked through the multi-day outage with professionalism and a commitment to delivering high-quality, safe care for patients."

That's impressive that they were able to shift back to paper. Most couldn't. They must have been through something like this before... *searches* Aha:

Aha: "CHS Settles with 28 States for $5M Over 2014 Data Breach of 6.1M"

https://tinyurl.com/59paey6w

Well good for them. They learned from the past and developed and maintained actual fallback-to-paper procedures. Must have been an absolute pain in the arse to actually do, but they pulled it off.

As for Oracle engineers that caused this? Well, they get the "little Bobby Tables" joke today:

36 Thank you FenelonSpoke. I intend to skip the morning OxyContin so I can drive myself to the ER and ask for an “overnight bag”. They used one at first but switched to a leg bag that can go under pants but has to be emptied frequently. They should have given me the larger bag so I could sleep as well as the smaller one, plus instructions on how to switch them Apparently personal hygiene is necessary as well. Instructions are written in the take home sheets but were not mentioned in person.

37 “Despite this being a major outage, our hospitals were able to maintain services with no material impact,” the (CHS) spokesperson said.

This, frankly, is a fraud. My wife has a coworker whose husband is entering the end stage of cancer and had the misfortune to land in one of the affected hospitals during the outage timeframe. With the computer system(s) down and w/o alternate protocols in place, the staff was having serious problems dispensing pain medications.

Then again, I guess if you consider pain management immaterial, then the outage wasn't a big deal.

46 Morning to you early risers, evening to you late toilers! Today is workout day since I skipped yesterday. It's also flea-bomb day, so I have to cover some stuff I don't want stained or poisoned, ease the cats into their carriers*, and take them to Linda's when I set off the flea bombs. We'll hit the library (where I will scan my state tax return) and kill a couple of hours. Then get everything back to normal.

I'm exhausted just thinking about all of it.

* I brought the carriers out last night. Neither cat seems perturbed. When they were younger, they used to walk right into the boxes when I opened the gates. Here's hoping they still will do that.

AP, I'm trying to assemble a new short story for one of Raconteur Press's anthologies. The theme is something that is right in my wheelhouse -- but I'm having trouble plotting it. I've written several pages of notes, me just noodling to myself, and watched the idea veer this way and that.

It's time for me to apply the Wolfus Doctrine: "Whenever you struggle with how to say (or plot) something, you are probably trying to be too complex. Simplify, then review."

Sorry to hear that. I don't know anything about him that he's a liberal and apparently stupidly and rudely said about American politics, "You can't be a Republican and a Christian" . i guess he'd probably think you can't be a Conservative and a Christian. Maybe you can pray for America if you're not already doing so and I will pray for . Canada However you folks survived Trudeau and we- theoretically- survived Biden. Remember, you are not alone in your thoughts about your country. Other Canadians feel the same way. Keep up the good fight.

95 @82/Boss Moss: "Won't the liberals need an ally to form a government?"

The only way the Liberals would not be able to claim the government is if the Conservatives and BQ (Bloc Quebecois) were to say they would cooperate to form the government in an alliance (much as the Liberals and NDP did during the previous term.)

The BQ is much more like the Liberals than the Conservatives, so the chances of this are somewhere between slim and none.

Thus, the Liberals have the majority of the seats, and can form the government.

During the next 4 to 5 years, if the government proposes a budget bill, and the Conservatives and BQ decide they hate it, they can outvote the liberals. The failure of a budget bill is a defacto non-confidence vote, causing dissolution of Parliament and another election to be called.

118 @96/FenelonSpoke: "What do BQ and NDP stand for?"

BQ = Bloc Quebecois, basically a Quebec French separatist party. They don't even run candidates in other provinces, and the only reason they're allowed to be a federal level party is because we treat Quebec special, when we shouldn't, but we did to keep them in Confederation. BQ is the party that keeps reminding us that if we don't keep treating them special, they'll leave and go independent. Don't get me started.

NDP = New Democratic Party, basically even more left-leaning than the Liberals though these days they've become indistinguishable.
