Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Monday Overnight Open Thread - April 28, 2025 [Doof]![]() Suuuuuuuuuurrrrrre - THAT'S How She Caught It Woman Allegedly Catches Herpes Virus by Holding Karaoke Mic Too Close to Her Mouth A woman from Zhejiang, China, claims that she caught the herpes virus by holding the microphone too close to her mouth at a karaoke lounge. The unnamed woman took to Douyin (China’s version of TikTok) to share the story of how she became infected with the HSV-1 virus, which usually causes cold sores around the mouth, eight years ago. In 2017, she visited a karaoke lounge in Zhejiang and got a bit carried away during her performance, holding the microphone much closer to her mouth than she should have. Sometime later, tiny, pustulent blisters appeared around her mouth, but although they were painful and itchy, she didn’t pay too much attention to them, and they eventually went away. Only they came back in a matter of days, and this time, the woman sought medical attention and learned that she had somehow contracted the HSV-1 herpes virus. *** The woman’s clip went viral on Chinese social media, but dermatologists have yet to confirm that her story holds up, and one can actually get infected with HSV-1 by touching a tainted microphone with one’s lips.Fellas, I don't know about you but I rate this as HIGHLY sus (as the yutes would say). ![]() Everyone in a relationship will know how love often works in mysterious ways, but quicksand isn’t typically involved, right? Typically, no; but never? Also no. Just ask Mitchell O’Brien and Breanne Sika, a new couple, for whom falling in love first meant falling in quicksand. O’Brien, 37, and Sika, 36, were both single and interested in the other, but under impressions the feeling wasn’t reciprocal. This carried on until a mutual friend asked them why they didn’t go out on a date together? *** “At one point, Bre points to a spot on the beach which was right next to the water, and she goes, ‘That looks really dangerous,'” O’Brien The Detroit News. “I didn’t realize she was referring to a singular spot; I thought she meant the whole area. I ended up turning around and walking straight to that spot to see if there were any stones in the water.” Sinking immediately up to his waist, it was the second time O’Brien had been caught in quicksand in his life. He was fortunately able to remain calm enough to think of a plan. After trying to dig the sand out from under his waist only for it to be replenished with every cold wave that splashed onto his back, Sika tried to help pull the man out. This also failed, and the two were left trying to call 911 with spotty cell service. *** “At the end of me telling them what’s going on and where we are, I said ‘I think my girlfriend is calling as well,'” O’Brien said. “She’s like 20 feet away, and she was saying ‘My boyfriend is here, stuck in the sand.’ It was the first time we had called each other that.”Read the whole thing. Very nice story!

The Net Zero blackout in Europe today got me thinking about the two big ones I was in in NYC.
Someone was wondering how long it would take for an urban hellhole to go Mad Max: well, in NY in 1977, it started as soon as the sun went down. Massive looting, arson, murders, in all the bad neighborhoods. We did better in 2003, but there was a lot of tension in the air because the folk memories of the one in '77 were still strong. If that happened NOW? Well, there are masses of illegal aliens, a Politboro City Council, no shoplifting laws enforced .... and the NIMBY New York asshats voted against putting a new power plant in the city, even though Con Ed is stretched to the limit, even with routine voltage reductions in peak load times (they've been doing that for decades, btw). Prospects? apocalyptic. Posted by: Beverly at April 28, 2025 10:10 PM (Epeb0) Posted by: Helena Handbasket at April 28, 2025 10:10 PM (Vqx30) 30

There was an old Ann Landers column where there was a question about what a guy would do if he had to either get rid of his dog, or lose his girlfriend. Great news - all of my tumors have shrunk by half! The plan for now is to continue on this chemotherapy medication until it stops working; no idea how long that might be. When that does happen, we will look at whether or not surgery can be done (right now it cannot, due to the fact that there are multiple tumors).
The surgeon did say that my response to this chemo has been "dramatic", and he is "cautiously optimistic" that surgery will be an option in the future. The surgeon has had about 20-25 patients over the last 3-4 years who had the mutation which allowed them to take this medication in the first place. Apparently only 10% of people with this type of cancer have this mutation, and of that 10%, about 40% have a positive response to the medication. So everything looks good for now! I will have another CT Scan in 3 months to monitor my progress. 😊❤️ Posted by: Teresa in Fort Worth, Texas - Ace of Spades Ladies Brigade, plucky comic relief at April 28, 2025 11:13 PM (SRRAx) Posted by: Anna Puma at April 28, 2025 11:13 PM (6/+5Z) 322

Oh, and only 10% of people who have Bile Duct Cancer have the Intrahepatic type.
That means that I am one of the only 1% of people with this type of cancer who has this mutation. There are usually around 800-1000 people who test positive for this cancer in any given year, so I am one of only about 100 people who has this mutation in any given year, and one of only 40 who responds to this medication. I guess I have threaded that needle for now – I’m gonna ride this as long as I can! Don Black, not just that team - NHL power plays are generally hilariously incompetent. After dumping the puck (lol) and giving up control, IF they get it back inside the zone, then follows a passing exercise that eats up their advantage time. Almost always with the objective of getting a very low % high-angle shot (usually a one-timer, also a poor choice and less accurate).
I go to some AHL games (Ducks farm team) and I've now got the people sitting around us to join in counting passes before a shot on a PP. It generally averages around 6-7, minimum. Again - usually to get a low % shot. I seriously wonder about coaching now. My overall impression of pros now (at least top level minors) - incredibly powerful fast and BIG talented athletes producing adult recreational level hockey. Another fun one - count body checks that occur more than 3 feet from the boards. Usually no more than 1-2 per game. Recently an opposing player delivered a perfect shoulder-to-chest open ice check, dropping the local player (who's incredibly fast and exciting) - many fans *booed*. As if it were a dirty play - instead of possibly the best defensive play of the entire game.
Have a similar story from way back involving an NHL fan base, but recounting it would be invidious given the location and the team. Hits along the boards are much, much easier (and more dangerous) than open ice hits. These kids have the skills, but it's a cultural change. Posted by: rhomboid at April 28, 2025 11:28 PM (1m82a) 366

Katen Read trial update:
Mob lawyer prosecutor Hank Brennan questioned Canuck IT expert Ian Whiffin about Jen McCabe's "his long to die in cold" search four hours before John O'Keefes body was found. He claimed the timestamp was not the proper timestamp. After stretching out the insipid questioning, defense attorney nerd Alessi started his cross. He only got a few minutes if sweet, sweet grilling before Judge Bev sent the jury home for the day (half day scheduled). The afternoon was spent in voir dire for the Crash Daddys, the ARCCA experts originally hired by the DOJ. Brennan really, REALLY wants to exclude them from testimony because they destroy his case. Hank was a complete, total screaming asshole to Dr. Wolfe, the Crash Daddy all the women want to be impregnated by. After Wolfe, Dr. Rentschler was briefly questioned. Tomorrow morning cross of the Canuck continues. Alessi will eviscerate him, which should be wonderful. After that, the Totally Evil Jen McCabe will take the stand. Check it out on Andrea Burkhart's channel tomorrow. FKR. Posted by: Deplorable Ian Galt at April 28, 2025 11:31 PM (ufFY8) 370

Struggles with figuring out the English language
- I have posted this before. From a 1997 email I still have: The European Commission have just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the EU rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5 year phase in plan that would be known as "EuroEnglish": -- In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c".. Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favor of the "k". This should klear up konfusion and keyboards kan have 1 less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with the "f". This will make words like "fotograf" 20% shorter. (cont.) My condolences AOP, Canada's had some hard years and it looks unlikely to improve now.
As a practical matter, is there actually any likelihood of AB "secession", either involving the US or not? And as I said above, this is very bad for the US too, in several ways. Most seem unaware of serious mistakes Canada has made that directly affect the US. There are several, but 2 highlights are visa-waiver travel for Mexicans (= massive and new cartel penetration) and of course the massive importation of unassimilable and unscreened immigrants, many from jihadish climes. This is what was behind Trump's almost immediate confrontation with Canada - that border is now a security issue for the US (major terrorist attack on NYC thwarted last year). It's possible the Liberals will play ball on serious border issues, of course. But seems unlikely (impossible?) to fix some of the damage done to Canada that also directly affects the US. Hiya Tammy! We have no idea what it was that attracted her to the "church". Hubbie and I go round and round about the situation. He responds to her in a sympatric way and I'm hardcore. She is always ugly towards us and I really don't give a shit. Life is to short to sympathize with her, in my opinion. She never had kids and I think her outlook about life would be different if she had kids. Not everyone who didn't have children feel like she does, I get that. I do think she should respect that we did the best we could for her. Probably we made life to easy for her, I don't know. Posted by: four seasons at April 29, 2025 12:01 AM (3ek7K) 426

So, just got back from the ER. Some people here were concerned. Thank you for all the prayers. All prayers are answered, just not necessarily how you want them. I have a Foley catheter and attached collection bag. Have emptied it twice since 11 PM, probably due the Flowmax I was given an hour before surgery. Yes, the Foley hurt a lot more than a temporary catheter. Still irritated at the site since this is the third catheterization today (once while passed out for surgery, second time while recovering.) Had to discharge to be discharged. I hope to have the Foley out before Friday, but better this than a ruptured bladder. Ultrasound said 295 ml, but they got about 600 ml. Then I emptied the leg bag before leaving the ER (pretty easy), then emptied it again when I got home (about a 30 minute drive). I was on OxyContin so not safe to drive. I think my deacon saved my life! Better a Foley than meeting my Lord before my time (though if I had died, it would have been my time). The flow has decreased, so I’m going to try sleeping in two hour shifts. Wearing bed shorts instead of pajamas. Thanks again for all your prayers. God bless you!

Had a student once who was one quarter Japanese and owned property in Japan by inheritance. Apparently had decent spoken Japanese but never learned to write it, except romaji, I suppose because he had never gone to school in Japan. I think I spoke out of turn when I said to him that the Japanese have four different ways to write their language, which they use concurrently, to keep people OUT. He was very disappointed since I think he realized I was right. The syllabaries and romaji, at least for a Westerner, are not the problem. It’s the Kanji.

I can read modern English, Early Modern English all the way back to “Le Morte d’Arthur” and even Chaucer (the last with a lot of dictionary look ups). My mother, English PhD. always said my Middle English pronunciation was poor, but I had no classes in it, just an English professor mother who let me read any book on our shelves. Mallory’s “Le Morte d’Arthur” was one of the first books I read because I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to be able to read it, and the book had an extensive glossary at the back. Every book was hard to read at that time (third grade), but I was determined to read it. Helps that it isn’t a novel but a series of episodic adventures, only loosely related. And they were knights, bashing each other with glee and reckoning justice by their own chivalric code, or lack thereof. What better for a little boy! “Wuthering Heights,” my next book, again from my mother’s shelves, was a lot harder to read not only for the Yorkshire dialect in portions, but also because it’s a novel, and a long meandering one at that, with themes beyond a 10 year old’s understanding.

Shame that she was allowed to teach, at least in a mixed setting. She would have been alright at a girls only school I suppose. Hiya Skip! Hubby goes to bed at 8 and I'm a night owl. I prefer being up at night. It is quiet here, dogs and hubby are asleep. What is your schedule tonight? Posted by: four seasons at April 29, 2025 02:19 AM (3ek7K) 603
Wish there was something *snackable* right now. Don't feel like cooking at this hour.

There will be a $3 Trillion dollar wealth transfer from the dumb boomers. Some will get the wealth some will receive the salty soup. I think they know it.

If you really think boomers believe in all that shit, your brain is broken.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at April 29, 2025 01:51 AM (8zz6B) Plenty of Boomers do, as I'm sure you're aware. The only people showing up to my local anti-Trump protests are old white hippies. Even the BoomerCons are baffling, though. They say they're against all of the things America stands for, but then get angry at people who hate what America stands for. It's deeply contradictory. America went astray 60 years ago and it stopped being a decent country sometime in the late 80s and an admirable country sometime in the mid-00s. America is the heart and soul of GloboHomo. >> Fucking leave and let us know how much better off you are living in a fascist country.
You mean a fascist country like one that does lockdowns for virus hoaxes? Or one where you'll be fired if you don't spout pro-trans, pro-BLM nonsense? A fascist country where the secret police spy on traditionalist Christians, and where people who protest a stolen election are called insurrectionists? What, exactly, are you defending, lol? I keep asking but it seems some of you are stuck in 1960 and think America means apple pie and baseball and not morbidly obese, tattooed trash and forever war and garbage food and black people making a million in online donations for stabbing a child in the heart and the center of the global homosexual agenda.. All he (Poilievre) had to do was create a mild contrast between himself and Justin Castreau, and instead he spent months trying to do his best impersonation of him. It was like watching Canadian Mitt Romney.
Posted by: Biden's Dog sniffs a whole lotta malarkey, at April 29, 2025 02:11 AM (qFAfu) He's even losing his own seat to the Liberal candidate. And there is a huge slate of no-namers also on the ballot, somebody said 90 of them! Sure sounds like some entity with a lot of money really feared him, and recruited a bunch of losers to run against him and lose their deposit. I suspect Chy-nah, or the WEF. (Candidates have make a cash deposit to Elections Canada of hundred dollars or so, refundable if they get a respectable number of votes, just to discourage this sort of shit.) Seriously, though, how did your generation end up so brainwashed into loving an obviously gay and communist country? It’s bizarre. Is there any evil America can do that would change your mind? America sexually-mutilates children due to the trans cult. It’s the great Satan.
Posted by: Disinterested FDA Director at April 29, 2025 01:39 AM (l3YAf) I'm going to say this once: Fuck right off to fuck off mountain. There are an equal amount of "progressive" asshats in every made-up generation, and none of them have the slightest connection with me and mine. Why in hell do people say thing about others sight unseen and without thinking first? How many commenters here qualify as "boomers?" What do you suppose me, born and raised in Alaska by parents born and raised during the depression, have in common with a bunch of silly hippy wannabe asshats from the Lower 48? Get over these painfully stupid generalizations that mean nothing whatsoever and start dealing with people as people, individuals, with all the good and bad that entails. Or, continue to insult the rest of us by jamming us into groups like the proggies do. Your choice. Posted by: tcn in AK at April 29, 2025 02:38 AM (a4NoL) 620
Didn't 'grill' the sammich-- made toast, added plastic cheese & some thin-sliced ham, then zapped in micro for 20 seconds. Dry but edible. No soup.
I'm a fan of Weasel's 2-minute rule, LOL! Even though I think making the toast took a bit too long. Posted by: JQ at April 29, 2025 02:38 AM (rdVOm) 621

Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at April 29, 2025 02:32 AM (l0E4F) He tried to run to the left to win votes from the squishy middle. Just like Rombley. I don't think he lost much of his base. The biggest swing was the almost total collapse of the NDP, with the Liberals gaining those votes. Posted by: tcn in AK at April 29, 2025 02:40 AM (a4NoL) What? The culture? The economy? Is the argument basically “You like your family and church and friends, so you must love America.” I’m pretty sure people in Germany 1944 or the Soviet Union circa 1985 loved their families, but that doesn’t mean those countries weren’t depraved monstrosities in need of destruction. With practice, getting better at emptying the bag. Mostly clear, so it’s all due to the 12 oz water bottles. Drank 4 waters, and a orange mango Body Armor. Thought it would help me micturate. Well, it did, just not the way I intended. My mouth is not so dry now, so maybe the Flowmax has run its course, and I’ll be back to longer intervals between emptying. I really do want to go to choir practice Wednesday night, but we’ll see. I need to go down to a more normal output to make it practicable.
