Remember the Helicopter Crash that was supposed to be Trump's fault for firings that didn't happen at the FAA? Turns out it was the pilot's fault for not doing what she was supposed to do. Whoops.

Whoopsie!

I scanned the article, and it seems to describe the chaos of running an airport, especially one in the middle of DC. Seems like a high-stress job with a lot of moving parts, but one part refused to move. She just didn't move to the left when her warrant officer told her that's what ATC wanted.

But it's Trump's fault because DOGE sent out letters to federal employees about their weeks.

59 With WO Eaves telling her to turn towards the riverbank, this demolishes the theory the helicopter crew was watching the wrong airliner when the collision happened.

As the NTSB briefing showed at that point over the river and if the UH-60 was below the altitude cap, there would have been only 75ft of clearance as the CRJ 700 was descending.

Moving towards the riverbank would have placed the helicopter BEHIND the passenger jet. As ATC was telling Patriot 25.

But the helicopter did not change course and AFAIK the evidence still points to the Blackhawk at being over the altitude cap.

So *boom*

87 From the NYT article: "He told her he believed that air traffic control wanted them to turn left"

Since the CVR transcript hasn't been released, is the real quote from the W.O. "I think they want us to turn left" or "TURN LEFT!"? Because if we are at the point where warrant officers have to make suggestions instead of issuing commands, we are in a very deep pit.

89 The warrant officer was the training officer on that flight....yes?

My understanding is that #1 She had too much altitude and he told her to bring it down. #2 ATC told her to turn left towards the bank and she ignored it, and 15 seconds before impact the warrant officer repeated what ATC said. She ignored it and called a "visual separation" status meaning she was calling the shots. I think that's the term.

The difference in insurance rates predates our current insanity by at least forty years. The actuarial explanation is probably that young female drivers cause more minor accidents (property damage) and young male drivers more major accidents that involve personal injury (speeding and drinking versus not being able to parallel park without hitting the adjacent cars)

NVGs do not matter at all in this crash because of two reasons.

1. Patriot 25 was above the altitude cap for that part of the flight corridor. NTSB is still trying to figure out how that happened.

2. ATC called out traffic twice to Patriot 25 and WO Eaves told her to steer towards the riverbank.

If she was below the altitude cap, the airliner would have cleared her by 75ft. No accident.

If she had obeyed Eaves, she would have past behind the passenger jet. No accident.

188 I'm going to assume that a WO taking over your controls automatically fails your evaluation. Pulling that on a higher rank is the proper thing to do, but you can't tell me there are lots of thoughts going through your head at the time and little time to consider them. Maybe the process needs a bit of tweaking...like don't do training runs in the middle of an Urban flight pattern.

Posted by: Orson at April 28, 2025 02:06 PM

The military does training runs in that area specifically for the crowded skies. It simulates a combat zone with aircraft flying all over the place.

And yes if the instructor has to take over the controls at any point the pilot being evaluated automatically fails that evaluation. Sucks but that is the rules. And I suspect the instructor in this situation was told that the pilot being evaluated was not allowed to fail the flight and he would assign a satisfactory mark.

226 As a former instructor pilot in the military, I flew plenty of flights evaluating or giving flight instruction to those who outranked me.

Rank had nothing to do with who was ultimately in charge during the flight. It was the guy (me) who was designated on the flight schedule as pilot in command and the guy (me) who signed the A-sheet (release form) in maintenance control prior to the flight. This dynamic was always addressed during the pre-flight briefing with the higher-ranked pilot.

I can assure you that any second-in-command, even one higher in rank, at the controls of my aircraft who did not respond promptly to correct a deviation called out by me would no longer be at the controls of my aircraft.

That would be long before the whole DEI culture invaded the military, though.

244 It takes hundreds of hours of flight time to be moderately proficient to fly there. Girlboss pilot probably got to "check the boxes" instead of actually going through the rigorous training since she was moonlighting as a White House socialite at the same time.

Presumably, she had already demonstrated proficiency. I believe that she had finished her tour as a WH whatever and was returning to a flying role.

Statistically young women have more accidents - but being more risk averse, they tend to be of smaller events, therefore less costly. Men are superior drivers, and get into fewer accidents. Because the military wanted that quick way to get out of the city area for this kind of thing and never bothered to reassess it based on the huge increase in traffic in the air.

The emergency evac has nothing to do with it, since in that situation normal traffic at National could be closed down entirely.

I never overestimate my abilities. Hold my beer.

Did she recommend wielding a knife around the time you wanted to feel amused?

314 She tried to, but I overheard two of her girlfriends talking about how she was kissing the ex while still pretending to be my son's girl. I told my son, and that ended it. Bright side is that he will never have to wonder what he did. She's just a slut.

Hand her a $20 in front of the whole school and say, "thanks for everything".

315 I wonder what Madison Cornbread is doing these days. Wonder if she's giving evidence to the DOJ .

If by "giving evidence to the DOJ" you mean serving as a jizz bucket for various folks in the Deep State, then yeah.

316 I feel like we did most of the teen drama around where I was in middle school. by high school I was totally jaded. now kids are so young even by senior year! it's interesting.

yes the youth and even 20+ year olds seem very childlike and super emotional. Even the boys.

319 Good afternoon!

Update on the prom. Turns out the girl my son went with to the prom only asked him to go to make an ex-boyfriend jealous. He didn't know, and actually thought she liked him. You want to know why a lot of men despise women, there you go.
Posted by: jmel

Scheming little wench! And I am sure that if a boy did something like this to her, she would be screaming and crying and throwing a fit - all 5 star drama over it. I am a firm believer in karma and she will get hers in return. Sorry this happened to your son.

320 Near any major airport, you simply cannot avoid having cross traffic.

Maybe so in general. But in front of the runway at low altitude such cross traffic is unavoidable? I find that hard to believe.

322 Had a girl in high school use me to make her boyfriend jealous. But she didn't tell me until we were at the movies. I just laughed. I had just earned my pilots license so a week later I took one of her friends on a flight up to the beach for lunch. Best date ever.
Sometimes things work out.

They'd probably have to fly southwest then south to avoid Dulles's airspace to go to wherever they were going to end up after flying down the Potomac towards the coast. Over lots of buildings and suburbs rather than water, and more time.

324 I recommend watching someone like CW Lemoine on youtube who discusses accident reports regularly. Much more informational to hear an experienced pilot's perspective than to read what's filtered through NYT reporters.

Commercial airliners fly over lots of buildings and suburbs all the time.

329 But we usually try to idiot-proof things that can have a catastrophic outcome if idiots behave like idiots do or equipment fails etc. Why not minimize the risk here by just having these two aircraft not be crossing paths in a way that permits a collision if mistakes are made or equipment fails? There has to be a serious upside to letting them fly in the same general vicinity to make that risk worthwhile. What is it?

It was idiot proofed. The pilot was more than an idiot though.

330 10 What I don’t understand is why the instructor pilot didn’t take command when she didn’t turn left and reduce altitude.

I believe the instructor was a warrant officer. She was a captain. Who outranks who?

331 best guess: she was a pain-in-the-ass so the check flight went to the bottom of the duty pole. too bad karma had to involve so many innocents.
