PRESIDENT: Some people here feel that your wardrobe makes a judgmental statement about how others dress. Do you feel we should have a more professional dress code here?
I had a niece who encountered this exact situation. She was told she dressed too well, and it was seen as a judgement on other workers. If they see it that way, perhaps they should consider why they are so sensitive about their work output. Posted by: Archimedes at April 29, 2025 07:34 PM (s8j++) 6

Early in my career, I had been wearing jeans to work all the time. No one ever said anything because everyone was as casual as me.
Then a new boss was appointed over me. The first time I met him, he yelled at me for wearing jeans. Let's just say our relationship went way, way downhill after that. Also, I worked behind the scenes to get him fired. It was glorious. He never knew how much he was hated in the office. Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at April 29, 2025 07:39 PM (GlyvH) 29

I once worked for a Silicon Valley company. Not in SV, but the company was based there. When I started it was *very* casual. Shorts and T-Shirts weren't uncommon. Not my style. Never has been. I wore my slacks and button-down shirts. I was one of very few. I had a coworker - an eccentric genius who looked like a hobo who lived under a bridge - ask me why I always dressed up. I answered him honestly. I said, "because the only thing standing between me and poverty is this job, and two weeks. I dress to give it the respect it deserves."
He blinked and said, "okay, cool." Never came up again, and I never got pressure from anyone about it. When that company said, "no dress code," they meant it. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at April 29, 2025 07:41 PM (WkNQM) 37

A good pair of suit pants is 1,000 more comfortable than jeans, and most of the time feels like you're wearing nothing at all.
The convenience of jeans is basically that you can just toss 20 pairs in the machine and be done washing them, while dress pants require dry cleaning (which basically doesn't clean anything) I can basically wear whatever i want to work, and is prefer suit pants, but choose the convenience of jeans. when I worked at State Farm part time helping them transfer paper files to microfilm (in the 80s), there was a girl who worked there part time as well. Ok, last thread was about Nike
Prof. Throckmorton reminded me of when Nike was a client. Of course coming to work wearing anything other than Nike logo apparel was right out, including me as a consultant. Except for the CFO. Bankers expect suits. Their long term strategy was very clear-to change the "dress code", or more accurately the "Style culture" in offices and companies to Sports Casual. A bit before my day, but I know that the guy from Xerox or IBM who came to fix your copier or whatever wore a Suit and tie, white button down shirt. Things have not gotten better. Proper business attire is a measure of both professionalism and respect. Posted by: Miklos applied for Official Old Fart Status at April 29, 2025 07:46 PM (IKhKt) 73

----------- You can't ever leave an office or section of an office to be staffed *solely* by women--if you do, there are only 2 possible outcomes: 1). They will turn on each other (civil war); or 2). They will find an adjacent department or division that includes a good cross section of men to butt heads with. Women do fine so long as there are men present to keep them from the 2 outcomes listed above. But they are beyond petulent in a work environment when left to their own devices. >>> "because the only thing standing between me and poverty is this job, and two weeks. I dress to give it the respect it deserves."
I love that! I worked for the guvmint in DC as one of my first real jobs out of college, and bought a lot of matching dress jackets and skirts and slacks. When I switched to higher Ed, I was poor and just wore what I already had to work every day. A coworker pulled me aside and was like "hey, you can wear jeans on Friday and you can be a little more business casual." I appreciated the advice, but I'd also been taught "dress for the job you want, not the one you have." I still had imposter syndrome as a new employee, and was young and wanted to be taken seriously. It took a while to phase out of suits, but I learned to mix and match business and casual in a way that worked for me. Posted by: LizLem at April 29, 2025 08:06 PM (8b3hM) 177
I just got a letter from my New Mexico state rep. for Las Cruces. The highlights of what my rep. is working on.
Against Housing Discrimination. What this translates to is protection from "income discrimination." Or I as like to call it, the rent is optional part of the lease. Immigrant Safety Act. This would codify into state law the nullification of federal immigration laws and enforcement. Essentially it is a pro open borders law. State Enforcement of Immigration Law. This does nothing of the sort. Essentially this one duplicates the previous one. I am impressed with the double down. Expanding Voting Rights. New Mexico doesn't require any ID to vote so I am not sure how that the current situation can be expanded on. It also gets rid of closed primaries which means she is for taking away the voting rights of the parties to run their primaries as they see fit. Finally: "Every email, every protest, every meeting, every conversation - that's what makes this work possible. I'll see you in the streets, in the neighborhoods, on the picket lines, and in the movement. In Solidarity [the reps. name]." In Solidarity. WTH? I am surrounded by Marxists here. SOS. Today was actually pretty nice. My friends had me over for lunch. The kids loved the pictures of their cats in our house. We had eggs, bacon, bread pasta. It was really nice. Oddly enough (to me) they are getting less expensive.
The year range of the popular cars goes up as people age. Basically retirees and middle aged guys want to buy the cars they always loved as teenagers but couldn't afford. Its moving up into the 80s recently and there's very little in that time period I consider classic from America. Grand National, kinda. The early 80s firebirds maybe? Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at April 29, 2025 08:49 PM (2VST1) ++++ There are a couple. One could make an argument for the Subaru Legacy. And I would argue all day that the AMC Eagle is perhaps the most important car of the decade and I would love to get my hands on a nice one (there aren't any). The AMC Eagle was a tall station wagon with a bit of ground clearance and all-wheel drive that drove like a car, was great in snow and mud and okay on gentle terrain. Sound familiar? AMC invented the "crossover vehicle" a couple of decades before anyone else figured it out. Now it's practically all that exists. AMC was first. It wasn't even ugly!
