Trash News

Earlier this month, Bloomberg published an article about declining male enrollment in American colleges and universities. They weren't alone - the story was also available on wire services and popped up on various newspapers - but Bloomberg's article was notable in how messy it is and what it attempts to raise in reader's mind - and what it attempts to have the reader never consider.

The pattern usually goes like this: state some facts, state some more tangentially-related or unrelated facts, stoke some fear and depend on nobody saying to himself, "wait a moment, what's missing? Are these things actually related? Why is this article trying to scare me?" We see this all the time in the American press.

Men opting out of college isn't a new phenomenon: Women have outnumbered men in undergraduate enrollment for about 40 years, and the gap continues to widen. Almost half of women age 25-34 have earned a bachelor's degree, according to Pew Research Center data; for men the rate is 37%. Between 2011 and 2022, the number of Americans attending college dropped by 1.2 million, with men accounting for almost the entirety of that drop.
As US men forgo higher education, the demographic group as a whole has lost ground in other areas too. Working-class men today are less likely to be employed than they were four decades ago, their inflation-adjusted wages have barely budged in more than 50 years ... Men with a college degree or higher still earn roughly 200% of what men without a diploma do, census data show.

Those are interesting comparisons. Can you spot a missing fact? One that stands out immediately is: "how was 'working class male' employment 40 years ago versus college education rates?" Bloomberg has made an assertion that "working-class men" have a bad deal, and it's because of falling college attendance creating too many "working-class men." Did it? Let's see.

In 1965, around 13%-15% of men aged 25 to 64 had a college degree. Looking at birth years of 1935-1950, we see soaring higher ed, with male degree attainment in those birth cohorts moving from between about 22% to about 32%. So degree attainment was quite a bit lower than it is today at the end of the period, but not by as much as you might think based on the scary headlines.

According to a 2017 study, "blue-collar" employment fell by more than half in terms of total employment as compared to the 1970s. So is the problem "men aren't going to college anymore" as Bloomberg asserts, or is the problem "employment prospects suck for non-white-collar people" as the data indicate? The two are not wholly unrelated. If there are fewer blue-collar jobs, it would be good to pursue a white-collar job if you can, and that means college. Bloomberg, however, after framing the argument, fails to discuss the broader historical picture. Instead, they go for scare tactics. This is under the ellipse in the first quote:

... they're less prone to get married or have children, and an increasing number report having no close friends. Men are also four times more likely than women to die by suicide. Data show that men age 18-30 spent an average of 6.6 nonsleeping hours alone each day in 2023, 18% more than they did in 2019 and over an hour more than women did, according to a report by the Aspen Economic Strategy Group.
Not only are they poor and underemployed, they're lonely and suicidal and it's because they didn't go to college!

Bloomberg also spends hardly any time on the cost problem. This article spends one paragraph plus a single quote from a high school student on the cost problem with college. It spends four paragraphs - plus an insert quote - on YouTube and social media "influencers" (and Trump, of course) conspiring to get men to reject college. It would all be fine if it weren't for those meddlers on YouTube and in the Oval Office! They also claim - in another three paragraphs - that men skip out on college because they're bored and it takes too long and there's too much bias in favor of instant gratification. A few words on needing a mortgage to go to college, literally nothing about education quality, and a pint of digital ink on "influencers" and "boredom" with a chaser of "you'll be miserable and suicidal if you don't go."

No. Men aren't increasingly lonely because they're not going to college. Blue collar jobs didn't vanish because not enough men went to college. Marriage rates aren't declining because not enough men go to college. Birth rates aren't approaching fertility trap territory because not enough men go to college. Bloomberg wants you to think those things, using the oldest trick in the book. The data they provide are unrelated, and the data they choose not provide are related. All of those key metrics were better when male educational attainment was lower.

But college - whether men go or not - is not the core problem. The problems described in the article - declining male enrollment, declining blue collar career prospects, declining marriage, declining reproduction, high loneliness, male suicide, etc. - are real but they are far less tightly correlated to the enrollment changes than Bloomberg wants to acknowledge. These are broad social problems that can't be boiled down to "foolish young men who spend too much time on YouTube aren't going to college because evil influencers tell them not to and they think it might be boring" or likewise boiled down to "men going to college collapses marriage and birth rates and the industrial economy."

The attempt to pin all our problems on declining enrollment is insane, and there is one line in the article that exposes what Bloomberg is really concerned about:

Returning Gen X students such as Wilson won't be enough to keep higher ed afloat.
Ah, there it is. Can't be having colleges fail because they priced themselves out of the market and drove away half their customers by offering poor value and low quality and a bad experience. Instead, get those young men to do their duty and go to college by making them (or, more likely, their parents) think they'll be underemployed, poor, lonely and suicidal if they don't. Gotta save the higher ed racket at all costs.

This article is egregious, but it isn't really special. This is how the press works and, despite the press' declining influence, it remains fairly effective.

10 Its not "conservative economics" but I'd like to see Trump mandate a maximum cost for college of $10K per year for American citizens.

Play with federal aid to force them to comply.

Note, most colleges could do this pretty easily though it would mean firing most of the non-teaching staff.

"'Equal,' and 'identical,' are not synonyms."

In the great drive to convince (at least) two generations of boys that they're just defective females, we've deliberately created an entirely new set of concerns which, of course, the government has set out to fix.

Entirely ignoring that government intervention is what created these problems in the first place...

19 Study findings include:

More than 75 percent of students at two-year colleges and more than 50 percent of students at four-year colleges do not score at the proficient level of literacy. This means that they lack the skills to perform complex literacy tasks, such as comparing credit card offers with different interest rates or summarizing the arguments of newspaper editorials.

23 One "conservative" way to fix colleges and universities has a few interlocking components:

1) No federal student grants.

3) All student visas are revoked, and none are issued for at least four years.
4) All visas for university staff are revoked, and none are issued for at least four years.

29 The lower male enrollment in college has another problem.

Since there are fewer men in college it leads the female population in those colleges to have to compromise which means more sex and less relationship stuff.

And worse yet those men in college are more leftwing then average so they are getting a high portion of leftwing sneaky f*ckers.

So when you hear these women say things like "all men are rapists" its because the one guy they know*, who is in their feminist club had sex with all of them and not necessarily consensually.

*The science/math students don't count because they don't move in the same social circles as people pursuing less rigorous degrees like teaching or English....

A few years back, I had an exchange with a new female employee I'd hired.

She checked in, and I was showing her around the shop - where to go for certain things, the bathrooms, et al. I asked if she wanted to grab a coffee from the ground floor and she said yes.

The elevator came, and there was nobody on it. I told her to take it, and that I'd take another one.

When we got back, she accused me of being sexist because I wouldn't deign to ride the elevator with a woman. I told her that I chose not to because she could destroy me if I did. "If you told HR I smacked your ass, no amount of truth would save my job. I might even end up in prison. So no, until we know each other better, I won't ride the elevator with a woman I don't know."

She was absolutely gobsmacked, and an hour or two later came into my office to apologize and told me she'd never even considered those situations from a man's perspective.

There are problems with FOIA as conceptualized and part of it is that if you try to scrutinize behavior more, they simply go off record via a multitude of messaging apps nowadays even places like Discord.

And yes, part of that issue is nat sec in nature with its overclassification of everything.

It is also the problem that FOIA is essentially an unfunded mandate for agencies and as such extremely low on the priority list.

There is also the fact that agencies simply do not have good paperwork/email/data management practices and thus finding information becomes something requiring people like DOGE data managers rather than the ill equipped staffs at these agencies.

41 Instead of "male college enrollment", I wonder how all those statistics graphed to "female workforce participation."

I'm betting a clear and obvious inverse relationship.

Increasing the workforce means that each individual worker is less valuable, making wages stagnate.

Now a working class family, to have the same standard of living a similar family had in the 1970s, needs two incomes to survive.

So, we decrease their value as a worker, we decrease their value to the family as a breadwinner, we decrease their value to potential spouses and start wondering why there is a problem with lonliness, suicide, lack of family formation, lack of children, etc...

I'll be pilloried for saying it, but the movement pushing women to join the workforce was massively wrong and harmed both men and women.

I think the causality might be inverted in the first part of that.

Women entered the workforce en masse in the 70s as a result of need first, not desire first. A lot of Boomer women were all about girl-bossing, but it wasn't yet the default standard.

Inflation destroyed wages. Wives went to work to help out the family. That *did* help in the immediate term, but helped compound things silently in the long term. And the bad behavior helping to drive inflation - that is, unchecked government spending a severing of ties between the federal budget and economic reality - continued unabated, too.

Can't do that by statutory interpretation. Either Scotus makes a constitutional ruling that the 14th Amendment Equal Protection clause forbids it or Congress has to change the law itself.

Basically any statute gets one facial interpretation by Scotus with the premise if the legislature doesn't like it, it can change the law. Subsequent as applied challenges can and do occur but the main doctrine stays put until either Scotus or Congress acts to kill it.

Disparate impact was written into a renewal of Civil Rights statutes to codify Griggs during the 1990's by a Dem Congress and GHWB.

65 I think a better way to think about it is what would they be saying if there were 50% more men than women in college, rather than the other way around. Easy: Sexism!!! Patriarchy!!! We need to replace all the professors with lesbians (I mean even more lesbians) and reprogram the schools to appeal more the women. But they don’t think for one second that they’ve designed all of education around women, and that maybe men have say f this. Which is what I think has actually happened.

66 It's all a moot point anyway.

Go to Reddit and read the threads in the "Professors" subreddit. What is happening in universities these days is beyond belief. Thousands of professors chime in daily on thread after thread, andnthey all agree that:

-- Almost 100% of modern college students cheat, using AI -- some cheat on every assignment, some cheatmostof the time, and a few cheat only occasionaly--but they all cheat one way or another.

-- Modern students generally show up t college functionally illiterate, and unable to perform or comprehend basic math.

-- Mot students seem to have brain ndamage caused by iPhoje addictions: Most are incapable of concentrating mpre than 20n seconds in a row, most cannot understand lesson instruction, and they seem incapable of retaining information -- whatever you teach them one day, they have frgotten by the following day.

-- A substation majority of students are rude, dismissive, verbally aggressive, insulting, and seems to all have severe personality disorders, and are unable to function as adults.

Not uncommon, and not just in cases where lesbianism is a thinly-veiled recruitment boast.

When men fall below some level - IIRC, it's somewhere around 40% or so - of the student body, women quit going, too. Fewer women than ever are out there trying to earn an MRS degree, but wanting to meet men is at least part of the equation, consciously or not.

If male enrollment generally falls too far below parity, enrollment is going to start crashing.

It’s a complete loop, yet again ensuring Americans lose out to foreigners from the first step, and can never catch up once excluded.

Probably not pilloried here. I was sold that lie. I did very well as an Architect, retired after 40 years of it. I put up with a fair amount of crap for being a woman in a man's profession for the first 10 years or so, but after that it pretty much stopped.

I also met other women in the profession who thought they had to be ball-busters to get ahead. Ruined themselves as women, IMO. I never had to do any of that to be successful. I was a mentor, not a dementor. For that I had very loyal people working for me, rather than a house of henpecked, miserable slobs.

I see no reason why a woman can't choose between working and raising a family, and why she is supposed to do both. Makes most women frazzled and miserable. I wouldn't have put up with it except society told me that was my "fulfillment." I'd have been perfectly happy as a domestic goddess. And now I am one.

The thing about college (or law school, med school, etc) is that they will ALWAYS take your money if you choose to enroll later.

In many cases, people can and do go back to get degrees or even specific certifications (like para legals in some states, etc) that require some college course work.

Our educational system in general is set up on the old German industrial model including K12 and not actually on education itself. We would do far better if K12+college became a more individualized process rather our current model.

The biggest opponents to such moves are oriented on sports, etc. as if you let students go to where their education requires, it destroys the whole freshman, sophomore, junior, etc. model that sports relies upon.

I can't fathom that. I don't doubt it, but I don't (maybe can't) get it.

When I got a bad grade on something, I absolutely went to see the professor to ask what I needed to do to keep from getting a bad grade next time. If it was something objective (math, etc.), it would be "what should I study to help me get this better" and if something subjective (writing, etc.), I used it to learn what the professor wanted so I could try to make my next assignment fit.

Demanding a grade change would never have occurred to me. Dropping classes happened a few times (prof was a dick who hated me from the start, for example, and I had no expectation that he or she would be fair in grading), though.

116 98 There was an article about Hillsdale in the WSJ recently, specifically exploring how they do without fed money. A commenter on their site mentioned he and his daughter had toured both Hillsdale and Harvard. When he asked her why she then decided she didn’t want to go to Harvard, her reply was “No one there smiles.”

Interesting…

Hillsdale gets all the press but Grove City in PA was actually the plaintiff college that prevailed at Scotus causing the Dems and GHWB to rewrite the law so that all functions of a university are covered under federal scrutiny.

Grove City also does not accept any federal funds and fwiw, I have a friend that has taught there for many years.

126 I can't fathom that.

It absolutely happens. I've dealt with a couple of faculty this semester to whom it's happened. They are good teachers and they care about their students' learning.

However, if a student doesn't get a good grade, they'll shred the professor in end-of-course evaluations, even though the students earned their poor grade through low attendance and little-to-no engagement in the course.

Here's the equation, though. A stay at home mom is also the person who figures out how to not spend all the money. That's why they used to teach home economics in junior high school. My mom raised five kids, kept the house, did the shopping and cooking and cleaning, and managed the household finances so that when my folks passed away, they still had over 2M in various accounts, this after several years in care.

We didn't waste food, but there was plenty of it. We didn't waste time, either, and all five of us learned everything there was to know about planting a produce garden, putting up food for the winter, processing moose and salmon, managing a huge freezer, sewing our own clothes, knitting our own sweaters and mittens, etc.

Otherwise, there was no way Dad could have supported us one one salary. It is a team effort, and plenty of work.

As for cheating, different cultures have different values for cheating. Wonder if they’ve considered that cheating became much more prevalent due to the increase in students from cheater cultures, as opposed to simply the AI tech being available?
And if your class is cheating, then why wouldn’t you, too? Not to endorse, but what choice do they have - drop out or join in. Colleges have to take some responsibility for that situation.

I dealt with some foreign universities such as in Italy, etc. (not the prestigious ones but the more easily attainable ones). Many rent space in commercial buildings, activities are on a voluntary club basis, and your housing is your own business.

Many of our urban state universities had similar origins but have moved to the high cost models as well with dorms, defined campuses, student services, etc.

Ultimately, I think online and hybrid universities are going to gain from the coming failures as education is just deriving down to a credential for most jobs.

Universities and colleges simply need to redefine themselves into working for their students rather than for themselves.

Part of that is that colleges/universities are now run by a managerial class of presidents, provosts, deans, etc. that float between schools despite truly awful records. Same system exists for large school district managers--they get fired in Phoenix but hired in Memphis sort of thing.

He gave me a C- instead of a fail grade because of the effort, and I promised I would not take another chemistry class as long as I lived.

You want people to research a subject?! They don’t know how! The old ways of taking 3’ x 5’ cards and taking notes on them from documented sources, and _paraphrasing_ the ideas in your own words is, apparently, no longer taught. That’s why they are always plagiarizing. They look up the references digitally then copy without restating ideas in their own words (that’s crucial - that makes sure you know the ideas, but use your own words), then they just pluck the copied bit, with or without citation, with or without understanding, into their presentation that they pass off as their own thoughts on the subject. Instant plagiarism! I saw it a lot in my latter years as a teacher.

176 I work in a field predominated by college educated women

The amount of incompetence I see from them is just staggering, and they continued to get hired for plushy jobs over men because muy dei vaginas

Even funnier, women can’t stand working with other women. I work in a small team of all males, we had a new female coworker who was temporarily assigned to us, after her assignment ended she literally cried about having to leave us and go back to working in divisions filled with catty Karens.

I’ve worked for various different companies and it strikes me how I tend to see this pattern repeat itself

181 Inflation destroyed wages. Wives went to work to help out the family. That *did* help in the immediate term, but helped compound things silently in the long term. And the bad behavior helping to drive inflation - that is, unchecked government spending a severing of ties between the federal budget and economic reality - continued unabated, too.

The minimum wage in the US in 1963 was $1.25. In 1963 I could go to the neighborhood bar down the street from my grandmothers house and buy a Reese cup for a nickel. I could buy 25 Reese cups for one hours work at minimum wage in 1963.

In 2025 the minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, a Reese cup cost $1.25. In 2025 I can't even buy 6 Reese cups for one hours minimum wage. The average starting wage in my area is about $14.00, I still can't buy half of the number of Reese cups with one hours worth of work that I was able to buy in 1963.

A lot of professors were the smartest kids in the room in their k-12 and somewhat in their undergrad degrees. But the truth is in grad school, a lot of really bright people into it for the learning get turned off when exposed to the sausage factory making grad students into Phds. Lots of informal hazing, meetings, and other things, to turn off people that had the brains to succeed but not the actually desire to do so.

Closest you can say about a lot of college faculty is midwits of about 130+ iq. Some are much brighter but often those are treated badly within systems by their less gifted colleagues and often by students in evaluations etc.

You have to want to do it and very bright people often have other options--some bad like coffee barista and some good such as industry, etc

You sign the paper for a loan you are obligated to pay it back. The only ones getting anything out of this are the colleges. And they make up rules as to who will get in? To be fair, it isn't just college doing this. The culture apparently thinks the only way women can interact with men is sexually. We know that is absolute crap. It is quite possible for a woman to know here worth and keep her legs firmly together in social situations.

It is also a man's responsibility to behave like a gentleman even in the confrontation of some oversexed harpy. It just doesn't happen much.

I have several men, particularly coworkers, whom I consider friends, and the feeling is mutual. I would never even consider having sex with any of them. I think the bullshit 60's sex crap has ruined that for most people. It is a shame.

219 Universities and colleges simply need to redefine themselves into working for their students rather than for themselves.

You’re never going to get an institution to place somebody else in place of their own self-interest. The wouldn’t survive if they did! What you need to do is make the self-interest of the institution coincide with the interests of the students. That should be doable, with the right incentives.

Add in destruction of traditional support and development organizations like Boy Scouts and churches, and the destruction of the traditional family. I used to date an Antioch grad. MA in Women's Studies, worked in her company's HR for a few years before leaving to be an HR consultant for more $. Weird chick, but a tiger in the sack. All her friends were lefty lesbians, except for the men she dated. After a brief period of bi exploration in college, she was enthusiastically heterosexual and had an odd, blue-collar guy fetish.

She dumped me because she found out I'd voted for Dubya in '04.

The appropriate thing for older men to do is to teach younger men that there are no long-term benefits to marriage. Not as "no fault "divorce is set up now, with 80% of divorce initiated by women, where it's almost a guarantee you will lose half of everything you own.

This isn't wrong. Outside of religious values, in modern America there is no benefit to the man that can't be had by simply living with the woman.

I think more of the problem is binge drinking and based on my previous grad student and undergrad observations centered to some extent on the fraternities and sororities. Socialization revolving around alcohol to lessen inhibitions and regular parties at the campuses I have been on.

The place I taught was a striving school with a fair number of non traditional students (less so as time went on) that were goal oriented and the traditional 18-24 year olds and because it was at the right place at the right time, it exploded in enrollment during a time when most schools were beginning to lose students.

Our campus did not have formal Greek organizations until about ten years after I started teaching there and Greek is still not really a big item there as a lot of our students worked.

Funny thing. Roughly ten years ago or so, all the college presidents got together with consultants informing them of declining male enrollment and interest in college. Turns out, these consultants pushed colleges that did not already have one, to get football teams (and damn the deficits and additional student fees added) in order to draw male students. Turns out surveys of average male students did not view a university as desirable if it did not have a football team. Females viewed a college as undesirable if the male enrollment was less than 45-40 percent as well. So our university and some others I know squandered money in football as a loss leader for male students.

When the government demanded that all units on drawings should be in metric and English units, they missed the point by a mile. What is a 2x4 in metric? And having done work on projects in Korea, a 3'-0" x 7'-0" door is not 3' x 7', it is a different size entirely, expressed in millimeters. Standards in metric countries are entirely different than standards in English countries.

So, drawings for US projects had nonsense millimeter units on them for no good purpose whatsoever. Your government dollars at work.

Explicitly in one state for state colleges and universities, that was ended by an 11th Circuit Court of Appeals decision. It was before Gratz and Grutter.

The whole stinking court created victimhood index based on disparate impact and codified as suspect, semi suspect, and not protected classes needs to be junked as evil and vile. It is unAmerican and creates a caste system which is as bad as the Plessy v. Ferguson decision created.

Women are still doing the same jobs today--after decades in the workforce, trillions lavished on them in enticements to college and other careers--as they were 100 years ago.

Secretaries, social workers, assistants, education, nursing; those are the same jobs now and 100 years ago most women were doing.

415 Metric is often easier for scientific measurements. It makes a lot of sense and is highly convertible.

Standard measures are better for things involving people. More sensibly-sized units and the boundaries tend to make sense in people terms.

I just got off two phone calls to the Chase card people. The first guy (prob. in Bombay, no doubt; he sounded like Apu's cousin) tried to tell me that my minimum payment was always to be $40, even though my balance this month was ~$28. I quickly realized if that's true, I would have three options: charge $0 in a period, charge exactly $40, or always charge more than $40. This did not sound right. I called back, and this woman assured me my balance of ~$28 was the payment to make, and there would be no extra charges next month.

We'll see if she knew what *she* was talking about.

Personally, I thought Kingfield was a jerk as you can get across concepts without beating them over the head. You can do Socratic questioning without playing the infallible sage on the stage.

I only resorted to direct confrontation in open class if the student escalates the issue claiming what is wrong is actually right by their opinion. I certainly can be wrong or ignorant of some circumstance and do not mind a student asking questions or issuing statements to that effect. But, I was there to teach them and that is more like jazz than science. Each class and personality that you deal with are different and distinct and should be shown courtesy and respect unless they do something to destroy that.

I lead them gently in class but saved such remarks for grading their papers. I required a LOT of writing including essay exams on our basic class. I hated multiple choice, fill in the blank, t/f etc. because I preferred for students to tell me coherently what they did know versus what they did not. The M/C, T/F, etc were simply time savers for profs in grading, not a good pedagogical device. Figured out late in my career how to use them better at times but still preferred written assignments.

Also screwed those frats and sororities that gathered test banks for their houses though that was not the intent. Past exams told them little about future ones. They had to come to class to pass.

The appropriate thing for older men to do is to teach younger men that there are no long-term benefits to marriage. Not as "no fault "divorce is set up now, with 80% of divorce initiated by women, where it's almost a guarantee you will lose half of everything you own.

Good God. Pick a side and stick with it. Either tell both sexes to stay chaste and get or stay married if they want to do married-people things, or tell both sexes to avoid marriage and do whatever they want with their lives.

Telling one sex to be chaste and the other sex to avoid marriage has created the morass that out sexual culture is these days, switching which sex gets told what won't fix that.
