Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Trump Unveils His "Secret Weapon" to Bring Racist Universities in LineDeep State Media organization NPR:What a weird way to say "he's fighting blatant racial (and political) discrimination in taxpayer-funded schools." Another executive action warns that federal grants for universities could be revoked if schools do not complete "full and timely disclosure of foreign funding." In a briefing announcing the order, White House staff secretary Will Scharf said, "We believe that certain universities, including, for example, Harvard, have routinely violated this law, and this law has not been effectively enforced." Federal law already requires schools to disclose gifts or contracts worth $250,000 or more from foreign entities. In a statement, a Harvard spokesperson said the school had, for decades, been in compliance with the law. On Truth Social on Thursday, Trump dug in on Harvard again calling the university "a Liberal mess" and "a threat to Democracy."He also is revoking Obama's and Biden's executive orders which demanded that schools not punish black kids, and/or severely punish white kids to make up for the fact that so many black kids violate school rules. LOL. Princeton University's President defiantly continues racist policies which other Princeton professors admit deliberately disfavor whites, Jews, and males of all races. Christopher F. Rufo and Ryan Thorpe report for City Journal: Princeton also has an illegal policy to discriminate against white suppliers and vendors. One hundred Yale professors signed a statement recommending that the school freeze all new hiring and conduct an investigation into its own hiring practices. This, they hope, will forestall a federal investigation. The statement points out that faculty hiring has "stagnated" while "administrative" staff -- mostly in DEI make-work "jobs" -- has grown by double.

"Trump's goal is to manipulate accreditors in order to force colleges and universities to do his bidding and punish them when they resist," said Todd Wolfson, president of the American Association of University Professors in a statement. Is our academics learning?
Posted by: Ace Odds are yes to at least trimming the huge administrative staff overload. Ratio of staff/admin to professors is now something like 3 tenured faculty to one administrator. At Ivies, it is more like 1.5 or so admin to tenured faculty. Used to be, administrators like Deans, etc. would do their stint and then return to their jobs as regular faculty. Instead, now, we have national searches for administrators that have no idea about the place they landed but are eager to rise up to the next position either at the current university or up the food chain. That is where you get lame brained initiatives from admin that bulk up costs, do nothing, and consume useful faculty time for teaching or even the increasingly worthless research required to keep your position. Admin simply have MOAR as their standard for promotion--more money, more spending, more staff. Posted by: whig at April 25, 2025 02:29 PM (ctrM5) 10

Posted by: joe GOP officeholders come from the insulated class (see Codevilla's The Ruling Class versus the Country Class). Back when I studied regime longevity, there was a theoretical construct, I think the author was Eric A. Nordlinger but it has been years, posited that regimes get away with more shit with more insulation from the consequences of bad decisions. From memory, he used the concepts of insulation, malleability, and resistance to determine regime longevity. Insulation from the people for ruling class is key because it protects them from removal and punishment for bad decisions. Posted by: whig at April 25, 2025 02:34 PM (ctrM5) 25

If "underrepresented minority" is their criteria for who gets preferential treatment now, then that necessarily must mean that WHITE MEN should get preferential treatment, since after 50 years of racist "affirmative action" policies, they are the ones underrepreented as compared to how many would have been hired if everything was merit-based. Posted by: Archimedes ======== Reform is going to have to occur at the state level. Federales only account for about 10 percent or so of school funding and even that will decline if Trump wins his budget fights. Constitutionally, education falls under the police powers reserved to the states under the 10th. As long as they do not discriminate (which the federales can punish), then fed power is limited to carrot and stick in certain areas like disabled or Title I students. Plus school lunch money. Closest example is by a UCLA law prof back in the day that did a rigorous study of affirmative action and law students. He found that attrition in mismatches between admits from aa to a highly ranked school that had below median scores and grades were more likely to drop out and not complete than if they attended a law school where their scores and grades were in the median (50 percent above and below). The ones that survive the process benefit but the only way to raise the whole disadvantaged group up would be to water down standards. Posted by: whig at April 25, 2025 02:51 PM (ctrM5) 76

The statement points out that faculty hiring has "stagnated" while "administrative" staff -- mostly in DEI make-work "jobs" -- has grown by double." So, Yale is in favor of DOGE now? Posted by: Darrell Harris at April 25, 2025 02:52 PM (ZR+Gx) 79

Every single K-12 and college I’m familiar with has padded their staff with useless administrators. It is the biggest sinkhole of money in the educational process. It also adds almost zero value to education outcomes which is allegedly the mission schools are meant to be pursuing. Why local school boards and those who run these colleges allow this to continue to the detriment of students is beyond reason.

So, Yale is in favor of DOGE now?
Posted by: Darrell Harris There is actually an opportunity, if played right, to cause massive conflict in education over money between the line workers and the administrators. Administrators in schools whether universities or K12 are increasingly divorced from any reality of classroom teachers. Yet, they get paid more and more while teacher salaries (and that of professors) have stagnated since the 70's in real terms) in most states. If these were publicly traded corporations, they would have been gutted of administrator bloat years ago but with them controlling the budgets, they push the cuts inevitably downwards onto the professors or teachers leaving themselves unscathed. Lot of buried anger and hatred there to be exploited by the right politicians. Posted by: whig at April 25, 2025 02:59 PM (ctrM5) Posted by: eleven at April 25, 2025 02:59 PM (0HaGk) 97

Why local school boards and those who run these colleges allow this to continue to the detriment of students is beyond reason.
Posted by: Marcus T ========= Easy, School board members are part time, get goodies from trips, etc. and get their egos stroked by smart administrators. Most have no training in running a business (not a corporate drone here), accounting, finance, etc. Often, they are retired educators themselves. So poor oversight until something bad happens then a change at the top sweeps nothing below and the cycle continues. The looting is far worse in the big city districts because a lot of money, declining student enrollment, and easy to hide looting the system when you have a disengaged electorate. Colleges have something similar plus the idiocies of Big Sports attached to them. NIL is likely to end that as in order to pay money sport players vast sums, they will gut and cut every non revenue sport they can to try to make ends meet. Not-accidentally, it helps the white elite class the most. Posted by: bob (moron incognitus) ====== A lot of the answer depends on exactly what question you ask. I took the question to be whether it benefits disadvantaged minorities and yes it does as far as future earnings prospects. Sucks for the dropouts. If you are discussing society wide, then probably not worth it from a cost benefit analysis given mismatch theory which is why Scotus finally acted in the Harvard and NC case to end it. Much of it was created by Nixon and LBJ in part to prevent a return of the disastrous riots gutting a lot of American cities in the late 60's. So the idea was pay a Danegeld in order to prevent minority black leaders from going full on Commie insurgency. Give them a stake in society sort of thing. Posted by: Marcus T Part of it is we have a weird connection since desegregation in that real estate prices are strongly correlated with the better schools. So leaving out those who have their kids in private schools, those parents in public schools pay outsized property tax amounts (due to property values) to get their kids in good schools. They rarely rock the boat. Plus most of those school elections and bond issues are held at inconvenient off cycle elections where you are lucky to get 10 percent of the registered voters to turn out. A large proportion of those voters are teachers, staff, and administrators or family members thereof. Princeton is pretty much in crisis right now; faculties are agitated, and funding is tight for the first time ever. This is a school so wealthy departments can have in-house yoga and massage for staff members, and "vacation" days are so flexible that staff really do not distinguish between work days and vacation days. So money troubles are unknown, until now. Princeton just told a big chunk of bonds to raise cash, with rumors being Eisgruber expects legal costs in fighting the Trump administration to be large. Princeton is as smug a socialist utopia as you could possibly find, so trouble is completely foreign.

Posted by: Braenyard ====== Large enough school district, they don't give a shit about individual parents. Actual knowledge on the ground. And that is despite the fact that much of the time it was a happy hunting ground for the GOP and had schools rated at the top of the state pecking order in academics for public schools. Parents can and do help control smaller districts and I have seen mixed results in medium sized from my observed experience. But, where I live has a lot of corporate transients that come to a place, live a few years, watch their property values increase and then they are gone to another suburbia school district. Transients rarely get involved in school district politics because a) no time to do it due to transit and business demands, and b) they figure they will move on in a few years to somewhere else. See the same dynamic in local politics as well which has a negative effect on corralling county and city commissions as well. Posted by: whig at April 25, 2025 03:29 PM (ctrM5) 178

Posted by: bob (moron incognitus) ====== Grievances rarely get resolved especially when you keep poking at the wound--see Euroland for example. But, one of the major factors hurting the black community is family breakdown. Blacks, before desegregation had about the same level of marriage and marriage length by statistics. The center of the black community was black owned businessmen, lawyers, doctors, teachers, and civil servant workers like postmen. So they were the standard to be measured by in that community and the youths in that community had to play by the rules by and large. No marriage with kids is a recipe for trouble with kids. eform is going to have to occur at the state level. Federales only account for about 10 percent or so of school funding and even that will decline if Trump wins his budget fights.
Constitutionally, education falls under the police powers reserved to the states under the 10th.
