It's tech, in that it uses 12 volts and is used to find vacuum leaks on engines.
So I just received a smoke machine, designed to pump smoke into your cars induction air and vacuum hose system in order to locate minute air leaks, which can cause problems. Let me tell you, that thing works! After only about three minutes I was able to locate a minute gap in the intake air filter lid, allowing a small amount of unfiltered air into the intake. Other than that...the entire system is absolutely air tight. It's also tech related as it uses an attached, and fixed set point 1/2 psi air reducer to provide only very low pressure air so as to not damage any delicate evap components. Evening and morning, fellow insomaniacals! I well remember "King of the Road" on the local top 40 station in 1964. For Christmas '63 I'd received my first transistor radio, and was listening before falling asleep one night in early '64 when a new group called "The Beetles" (or so I thought it was spelled) sang "I Want to Hold Your Hand." Miller's "Dang Me" and "King of the Road" came along a little later that year, along with Terry Stafford sounding like Elvis with "Suspicion" and Lesley Gore's "You Don't Own Me."
The six-to-midnight DJ would take dedications. Mostly his callers seemed to be teenage girls from local high schools -- as you might expect. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 24, 2025 06:19 AM (omVj0) 67

The EU is fining Apple and Facebook a combined $800 million for not respecting European values. Bathing too often, good dentistry, not smoking. Really, the EU never innovates, it's a parasite on the successful elsewhere. I saw something where if you compare the market caps of US and EU startups over the last 50 years, the total of the EU is on par with that of Home Depot. The EU is fining Apple and Facebook a combined $800 million for not respecting European values.
It's just another form of tariff. The EU will pass a regulation which only affects US companies and then fines them some ridiculous amount to drop in their slush fund. But, because they call it a fine and not a tariff, the idiots who get all their information from paid shills on X (or Bluesky now, I suppose) will hoot and slap their chests about how wonderful the EU is. Setting aside the "lets sew dead people's ears onto mushrooms" abominations, people should be paid for the things that we're giving the medical industry to turn around and charge us for. Think about that blood people donate left and right. It's $1200+ per unit when they get to the hospital. That $70K eyeball is nothing but profit when someone who is still living in the 70s or 80s falls prey to the continuous advertising campaigns. Let them start paying for it. Once it become a precious commodity again there will be some responsibility in how it's handled, and the Fauci style horror shows will end. They reached that point a long, long time ago. They just learned to incorporate a lot more error correction checks in the hardware and design for it. This is why you see stories about a company like Intel or TSMC touting its first working samples of a new process node years before any products using it appear on the market. It takes a long time to work out the details of how to work with it. But since we're now commonly putting chips with tens of billions of transistors into consumer products like high end gaming GPUs, the silicon real estate for all that error correction isn't a severe penalty. It's part of the reason why die shrinks are no longer the slam dunk solution to major price cuts in things like game consoles. The last time that worked was for the PS4 Slim and Xbox One S. After that, every major process node advance worked differently from its predecessor, so that porting an existing design was not a trivial task. It was enough of a hassle that you might as well use a newer chip design created with the new node as its target. No 5NM for Ryzen 2 or RDNA 2 This is why the MSRP on the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles hasn't improved much in the five years since launch. Yesterday afternoon I had a hell of a time with the Capital One people about their website. I tried to log in, an dthe only phone number they offered as a choice to receive a text with a verification code was my old phone -- which I ditched two years ago. I've been receiving verificaiion texts on the new phone for all that time; I updated my number on their website. Yet, when I called, they insisted that my account *has never been updated*, that the old number is the only one they have, they can't send me a text to the new one, and the only way to verify my identity is to have me send them a pic of my driver's license.
They insisted, too, that my records show that I've logged in, but I've never received a verification text. Patently absurd. That's been the only way for me to get into the website. The only difference now? I'm on my home computer, a different IP address, and not my work computer. Yet they cannot admit there might be something wrong on *their* end. Infuriating. I don't need the damn website, and will use their card very rarely from now on. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 24, 2025 07:19 AM (omVj0) 102

The only reason I used the CO website was to apply whatever "reward" amount I'd earned to my current card balance. I can do that on the phone, as I have with Chase for years. And I may try the "complaint" line, and ask them, nicely, to create a trouble ticket to investigate the problem.
Somehow I suspect it will come to naught -- and then, three months from now, a tiny news item will show up where CO admits they have had a "glitch" where customers changing computers cannot access the website because their account seems to have the wrong data. Call them to close your account and when they ask why, tell them that your new bank makes it easy to update your information. They'll break land speed records to solve the issue. Posted by: NR Pax at April 24, 2025 07:28 AM (lXoJ5) 110
From the NY Post:
"The USS Yorktown retrieved two Enterprise aircraft that were damaged in an attack on the Japanese navy carrier Kaga, according to the agency, citing records. The planes were moved down to the hangar deck before they caught fire when underwater missiles by the Japanese pounded the ship." "underwater missiles"? Sheesh. Was this article written by AI? Anyway: I've had a good breakfast, will shave and then finish my morning pipe as I watch Have Gun -- Will Travel, and then try to cook up a plot for a new short story.

You made too many changes without notifying them, that makes your account fail a KYC filter and you look like a hacker. Change IP and phone - yeah, you are a hacker. Any pen tester will tell you that. Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at April 24, 2025 07:36 AM (a4flb) 119

Yesterday my husband had a doctor's appointment - when we got there they saw him right away, called an ambulance & sent him to the local hospital. Tests showed that he had a minor heart attack. He is there, all hooked up to monitors, waiting for an angiogram to see if he needs a stent.
I spent the day communicating with family and cancelling stuff. Now I am off to spend time with him in the ICU. We would appreciate prayers. Thank you Posted by: Trudy at April 24, 2025 07:46 AM (/poSy) 125
I still remember my first transistor radio. It was red and soft leather case. I also remember how quickly the batteries died.
Posted by: Tuna at April 24, 2025 06:24 AM (lJ0H4) I still have my Zenith 275 transistor radio I received for Christmas 1959. Carried that everywhere on my bike, or on walks as a kid. That radio was $49.95 back then, a big chunk of change, but was built with typical Zenith quality. The 7 transistors were actually seated in little sockets, not directly soldered into the PC board. I spent a lifetime working in the electronics field, and I still marvel at the level of quality back then when it came to American built electronics.
