Wednesday Morning Rant

mannixape2.jpg

Having It Both Ways

One of the fascinating aspects of the new tariff environment is the handling of some of its immediate repercussions. Ace had an excellent post about this yesterday, and one aspect of that article is fate of the company Shein. So is this one, after a fashion.

Shein is a - perhaps the - "fast fashion" business that has thrived (and indeed depends) on the "de minimis" import exemption. Shein may not collapse because of the removal of that exemption (it has markets that are not the United States), but it may well be done here. It will be a similar story with other "fast fashion" and other small-ticket, high-volume, customer-direct China-based online retailers like Temu, wish.com and Ali Express.

That Shein will either collapse or be greatly reduced as a result of Trump removing the de minimis exemption is not without upsides. Shein is essentially a sweatshop network and is at the bottom of the barrel in terms of labor and environment practices. Even by Chinese standards, Shein is extremely exploitative. The entire business model is also grossly inefficient. The entire "fast fashion" and similar industries exist entirely because of the de minimis exemption, because it makes no sense otherwise. Small-volume sales from half a planet away is an insane business model. There is no way to make that pay when containerized shipping is so comparatively cheap other than a perverse incentive. The de minimis exemption was that perverse incentive.

It's also an exemption that was the enemy of many an environmental group back when it was safe for progressives to attack it. The "Fast fashion" industry is hard on the environment (though that's "over there" and environmental NIMBYism doesn't care about "over there") and borderline disastrous in terms of energy. The energy it takes to ship a Shein garment is significantly greater than it is for a garment delivered through bulk purchasing and distribution. The environmentalists have been talking about this for years now. Had Biden eliminated the de minimis exemption, they'd be cheering.

Yet most are not. Orange Man is still Orange Man. The dichotomy is on display in many outlets.

"Sustainability Magazine", January 2025:

Fast Fashion, ESG & GHG Emissions: Is SHEIN Greenwashing?
Fast fashion giant SHEIN is continually strengthening its ESG efforts with donations, innovations and programmes - but is it greenwashing?

"Sustainability Magazine", February 2025:
Could Trump's Tariffs Spark a Global Climate Tech Trade War?
Trump's tariffs on Chinese imports and suspended duties on Canada and Mexico raise fears of a global trade war, with climate tech supply chains at risk

EuroNews, October 2022:

How are Shein hauls making our planet unlivable?
Workers are paid as little as 4 cents per item, a new investigation reveals. While Shein continues to be a sustainability nightmare.

EuroNews, April 2025:
How Trump’s tariffs are dampening hopes of a luxury sector revival
The global luxury sector, which has been facing slowing demand and an eroding customer base in the last several months, could be further hit by the escalating trade war between China and the US.
...
According to Bank of America, US consumers accounted for about 21% of worldwide luxury sector revenues in 2024, whereas Bain and Company estimated that China made up somewhere between 22% and 24% of global luxury consumption in 2023.
This one is particularly amusing. Cheap clothes made in China for people without a lot of money and then shipped out? Bad. Expensive luxury goods made in China for rich people and then shipped out? Good. We mustn't disrupt the luxury goods market! You plebes can suffer, but we elites are above that!

What did these people think? Did they think at all? The same people who advocate for total deindustrialization and the implementation of dystopian techno-feudalism are decrying a thing that may actually have a meaningful effect in reducing pointless emissions of the Dread Carbon. This will be a side effect rather than the point of the action, but it does have a strong chance of actually reducing emissions purely as a secondary effect.

Perhaps that is the point. Their recessions - really, permanent declines and reversals - are good because they're the "Right Thing To Do" (tm) whereas a recession - which hasn't happened yet, but likely will - caused by necessary realignments of global trade and politics is evil. They're getting some of what they want, but they hate it. The wrong guy did it for the wrong reasons. It matters not one iota that they will get something out of this. It only matters that the Orange Man did it, and it is therefore bad.

At best, these people want to have their cake and eat it, too. They want no industry but to live in the affordable comfort that industry provides. They want their dream of "decarbonization" without any costs. Those are the idiots. The more cynical simply want those costs externalized onto someone else. The rest are the machinators who never cared other than as a means to power and control.

To a man, they all wanted to have it both ways, whichever "both ways" is in question. Some want their hypothetical upside with none of the real downsides. Some want their power without any questioning of it. Some want their luxuries so long as somebody else pays. But all of them want something for nothing and will now learn that that there are no free lunches.

One upside of the recession that is likely coming is that it will disabuse a lot of people of the notion that they can have it both ways and that lunch is always free.

I don't know about these days but when we were stationed in Japan nearly everything was disposable including cars. The Japanese government would only allow people to own a car for two years after that they imposed a huge fee on the owner which encouraged them to trade it in or sell the car to a foreigner. Americans could own the older cars without penalty. The market on the base was glutted with low mileage newish used cars. That kept their auto industry propped up.

Also, I'm OK with paying more for American made products that provide employment for Americans, instead of buying cheap crap from China, then paying higher taxes to cover unemployment or welfare for Americans who lost their jobs when manufacturing moved to China.

76 You'll be happier when you are forced into a 300 sq ft apartment in a high-rise, utterly dependent on public transportation.

A few years back, a tranny Communist "transportation advocate" (welcome to California) noted that the whole point of forcing people into small rental apartments and forcing people to only use public transportation was to encourage collectivist modes of thought - the more dependent you make people on the government, the stronger left-wing political parties are going to be.

78 Fast fashion is a massive waste of money and resources.

For those who don't know, basically the chinese companies make very cheap, inferior products almost immediately after a new fashion comes out.

So a designer comes out with a $500 shirt, and companies in China make a $20 version of it that is almost designed to be disposable. Obviously at that price point, you're not going to wear it more than a few times before it falls apart.

And when a new fashion comes out, the companies jump on that as well.

It's not infringing on any IP (long story about the history of clothing being able to be patented or copyrighted) necessarily, but I mean...

Just wasteful all around.

80 If a market for that kind of thing exists, it's not in the world of fashion and fads. When folks can identify last years products as such and judge you for not keeping up, it really works against the idea of long lasting quality.

92 For most products there's a sliding scale regarding pricing and quality. I'll pay $700 for a new Fender Stratocaster--made in Mexico. I could buy a cheap copy from Chynah, but the electronics would be terrible, the neck thin, and it would require too much work to get it to sound as good as the Fender.

On the other hand, a made-in-America (California, actually) Fender would cost about $1,600. In theory the pickups (an electronic component for those of you who don't play guitar) are slightly better, but a new set of pickups don't cost the $900 that is the difference in price.

98 From Americanmind

It was necessary, Hamilton contended, to exert the government’s authority to promote American manufacturing to counteract the “artificial policy” of other nations that sought to exclude or disadvantage American goods. The ultimate aim of such a policy, he explained, was not the “vain project of selling everything and buying nothing”—it was instead to secure America’s vital national interests. Hamilton argued that national “independence and security” are the “great objects” of all governments, thus requiring each country to “possess within itself all the essentials of national supply,” especially “the means of subsistence, habitation, clothing, and defense.” Having such goods available within one’s own country, he continued, “is necessary to the perfection of the body politic, to the safety as well as the welfare of the society.”

It's next to impossible to find children's toys today that aren't made in China. Yet just a few decades ago somehow we did it.

144 also, I'm no bleeding heart tree hugger here, but the pollution in China is both literally and figuratively breath taking.

Walking around Beijing or any major city I've been to, you feel like you're breathing in car tires and lithium ion batteries. Your clothes and skin get coated in a chemically oil.

During the winter, when everyone is burning coal to keep their apartments and businesses at ungodly high temperatures (seriously, Chinese people set their thermostats to like 75 F), you literally can't see 30 feet in front of you.

I don't see how any one who cares even a little bit about the environment can be okay with that.

Part of the reason everything is cheaper in China is not just the slave labor -- it's that they're literally willing to poison the environment to save a few bucks to make shitty exports that will end up in a landfill anyways.

It's monumentally stupid. And wasteful.

Push their economy in the right way and splat

Then they charge outrageous amounts for replacement batteries. You can get cheap knock-offs online, so they change the battery styles every do often so nothing is compatible.

It kinda depends on how one shops. If you have a household item, and it breaks down, the easiest thing to do is order a new one from Amazon or Walmart, and get on with your day.

If you want to spend half a day shopping around town for a "good" one, that's fantastic. Not everyone has the time or inclination to do that, and otherwise finding that "good" one online is a chore, because you have to surf through all the Chi Nah crap before you find it.

Posted by: Bulg at April 23, 2025 11:04 AM (77rzZ)

Part 1.
At the risk of setting off another round of Catholic-bashing around here, Catholics believe (or are supposed to believe) in the Real Presence. That is, the Consecrated Host, even the tiniest particle of it, contains the whole of the Body and Blood of Christ.

Therefore, any Consecrated Host needs must be handled with care and reverence. In the Tridentine Rite, after the Elevation of the Host, the priest afterwards keeps together through the rest of the Communion Rite the right thumb and forefinger that touched It. When the Host is distributed to the faithful receiving, the altar boy holds a Communion plate under the chin of the communicant, lest the Host fall to the floor.

Post-Communion, the priest performs ablutions, first washing the Chalice with wine and receiving it, then having his fingers washed and receiving it. That way, any trace of the Consecrated species has been consumed. If a second priest is assisting in distributing, he dips his right thumb and forefinger into an ablution cup full of Holy Water that's on the altar.

My bosch jigsaws are from the time they were made in Switzerland and still work like the day I got them. They could make a cut in a Corian counter top like it was done with a laser, the cheaper jigsaws of the time would look like the cut was done with a steak knife. These days the cheaper stuff has definitely gotten way better compared to years past, but you can tell the difference.

Posted by: Its Go Time Donald at April 23, 2025 11:38 AM (DKKgv)

I don't know how true that is. I only fly major airlines (mostly Delta, get points through my Amex), and that's true of most people I know.

It really only takes one bad experience with a "budget" airline to realize the extra $100 or whatever is well worth it to get on an airline that if there is an issue, will be much more willing and likely to fix it. And treat you kind of like a human being in the process.

On the flip side, I do travel kind of a lot and have status at Delta so I also get upgrades to First class on short flights pretty regularly. If I was an infrequent flier and had to pay for everything myself, maybe I'd feel differently.

I agree. There is definitely a noticeable "enshittification" and loss of competency going on around the world.

That "Puritan work effort" and "taking pride in your work" stuff that people scoffed at? Yeah, that probably had a lot to do with why we went from a third world backwater to the leading world economy in 100 years.

But now we bring in foreigners to "do the jobs that Americans won't do", who clearly don't give a shit about the work quality. And our corporate cultures push short term "fixes" on everything, which also leads to shittier long term outcome.

I don't know the solution, really, but it's not an ideal situation to be in.

Part 2
So what happens at a Novus Ordo Mass? Communicants shamble up to (usually) the Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, have the Host put in the hand and put in their mouth. Yeah, it should be done right there but who's watching?

After Communion, the priest performs ablutions. The EMs should perform ablutions of some kind, not that I've ever seen any do it. But what about the communicants? That's the problem with Communion in the hand. No one receiving has the opportunity (or inclination) to perform the necessary purification before returning the hand to its ordinary use.

Retrograde thinking like mine is sneered at by hip, modern thinkers as "crumb theology". But if it's a dogmatic matter, I'd like to think it ought to be taken seriously.

Thus endeth the lesson.

Almost every seat is now “premium” or some other made up formulation to charge more. There is no rhyme or reason to how it occurs. You can often be seated next to a regular price seat, just because.

TikTok now getting flooded with videos from Chinese apparel factories showing that they make most popular American brands and sell them to the American garment industry for pennies on the dollar for what consumers pay.

Tons of comments investigating how to purchase clothes direct to consumer from Chinese factories, bypassing the brand name companies adding their logo (plus the added markup).

The major airlines are trying to both be a premium product while also competing with the Allegiants of the world.

It's minorly annoying, I guess, but if you pay for the "premium seats" (or have status with the airline), it's not a big deal.

If you want to be cheap and get put in a middle seat in the back of the plane, you can do that too.

Options for everyone.

It is low time preference in purchasing and investing that is driven by inflation and financialization.
Inflation because nothing holds its value so you got to get something made or bought now while the money has value, and financialization makes borrowing money and then buying things "for free" a good deal with low interests rates - which also drive inflation.
hard money reverses the trend for both. Actually having some way of saving money so it doesn't lose its value is another way to reverse that trend

271 Sure low wages and taxes are a part of companies moving off shore but it is regulations that are the big culprit to the USA being competitive.

I did a few automation jobs in the early 2000s for a growing and vibrant textile industry here in cali. But then the EPA and CARB came in and said they textile mills had to retool to meet new regulations for pollution and air quality. The cali textile industry was willing to do that but governments said the time table had to be quicker. So quick it was near impossible to do and not anywhere near cost effective. So overnight the cali textile industry moved. With that, the garment manufacturing moved to for supply line reasons. And of course the ancillary service industries shrank or went out of business.

All due to bureaucrats that had never worked in the industry nor knew anything about the minor pollution that was going on at the time.
