48 I like how the blue and violet of the queen's dress counters the vivid red on the man. I also like how the line of the man's long, standing posture counters the sharp diagonal of the women. The spots on the leopard hide are similar to the glass circles on the window. Hayez also peppers the painting with lovely, muted pattern.

Caterina Cornaro

Left bereft of possessions except for two sacks of dried beans, some empty burlap sacks, and some tray-sized pieces of wood with one large hole in one end of them, Caterina went on to create a game that used small burlap bags filled with beans that players threw to try to get them through the boards' holes.

Naming the game, "Cornaro", it swept through the Aegean Sea region. Today, we call it, "Cornhole".

71 I don't know how the artist achieves this but in this painting and many of his other works Hayez achieves a subtle glow throughout the scene and especially around the people. Look at Catherine in today's painting as an example. It adds an aura of the romantic. With the realistic detail it creates a sense of drama. I wonder if he influenced book illustrators that came along in the late 1800s and early 1900s. This has some of that feel.

Being a Neoclassic style artist also means he gets to paint a lot of female nudes. Fun for the artist and the viewer. Check out his Wiki page.

Francesco Hayez was from a relatively poor family from Venice. His father, Giovanni, was of French origin while his mother, Chiara Torcella, was from Murano.

Realism in foreign policy is recognizing facts on the ground. Ukraine is prostrate and no amount of Uncle Sam's money or advice is able to change the fact that Ukraine has been defeated. Trump will NOT send US troops to die for Ukraine so there is nothing else to do than extricate ourselves on the best terms possible. Euroland, trying to act to prop up a dying regime is simply trying to get their billions back that they lent, it is not principle. If Ukraine is defeated, they will most likely repudiate those debts having nothing to pay them with.

Using realism as a guide, the US poses a diktat to the defeated proxy to end the war. If the proxy refuses, then you wash your hands of the matter and let will occur happen. One such thing just might be an internal coup to replace the deranged and disgraced Z man and then the coup leaders can then make peace. Another, would be Russia completes the conquest.

I think the crusher was that Euroland and NATO were batshit crazy in making moves to let Ukraine join the EU and NATO. Biden's foreign policy team either wanted that to occur (being led by the CIA's sunk costs there) or did not care.

Beignets, though famous here, are hard to find aside from Cafe du Monde and Morning Call. Both of those are a considerable drive from me.

I was amused when I first visited northern New Mexico in '92 and found that a sopaipilla is the same flaky, hollow pastry as a beignet, minus the thick white powdered sugar on the latter. I'd rather be in Albuquerque or Santa Fe right now anyway.

210 Beignets, though famous here, are hard to find aside from Cafe du Monde and Morning Call. Both of those are a considerable drive from me.

I was amused when I first visited northern New Mexico in '92 and found that a sopaipilla is the same flaky, hollow pastry as a beignet, minus the thick white powdered sugar on the latter. I'd rather be in Albuquerque or Santa Fe right now anyway.

You know you're in a true New Mexico restaurant when they plop a basket of sopaipillas in front of you, and there's already honey on the table. I ate once in a place in Denver that said it was authentic NM food -- and there was no honey to be had in the place. Pffft.

Way back when, my father was at Kirtland AFB for some ordnance school (think it was about nukes perhaps), and we spent our time in Taos, Albuquerque (saw one of the last riots there that resulted in the UNM's library being burned), and other scenic spots like Sandia Peaks and even White Sands/Los Alamos.

70's New Mexico was interesting but I have no desire to return.

That is why I generally avoid Mark on the Resurrection. Textual analysis of the sources used for the Gospels becomes a time sink if you get really interested in the subject. I've read enough to figure it is mainly a scholarly fight over orthodoxy that I have little interest in. Most scholarly work becomes supposition rather than provable without additional information.
