I like how the blue and violet of the queen's dress counters the vivid red on the man. I also like how the line of the man's long, standing posture counters the sharp diagonal of the women. The spots on the leopard hide are similar to the glass circles on the window. Hayez also peppers the painting with lovely, muted pattern.

Caterina Cornaro Left bereft of possessions except for two sacks of dried beans, some empty burlap sacks, and some tray-sized pieces of wood with one large hole in one end of them, Caterina went on to create a game that used small burlap bags filled with beans that players threw to try to get them through the boards' holes. Naming the game, "Cornaro", it swept through the Aegean Sea region. Today, we call it, "Cornhole". And now you know ... the rest if the story. I don't know how the artist achieves this but in this painting and many of his other works Hayez achieves a subtle glow throughout the scene and especially around the people. Look at Catherine in today's painting as an example. It adds an aura of the romantic. With the realistic detail it creates a sense of drama. I wonder if he influenced book illustrators that came along in the late 1800s and early 1900s. This has some of that feel.
Being a Neoclassic style artist also means he gets to paint a lot of female nudes. Fun for the artist and the viewer. Check out his Wiki page. Posted by: JTB at April 24, 2025 09:51 AM (yTvNw) 72

Nicely detailed and colorful -- esp. the standing guy's red robe. The leopard rug, the Ethiopian dwarf slave (or perhaps it's a young girl), the folds and texture of the Queen's dress, even the glass of the windows, all speak of the painter's skill and the effort he put into this.

Axios: Trump's "final offer" for peace requires Ukraine to accept Russian occupation...includes U.S. recognition of Crimea as part of Russia and unofficial recognition of Russian control of nearly all areas occupied since the 2022 invasion...
A source close to the Ukrainian government said Kyiv sees the proposal as highly biased towards Russia: "The proposal says very clearly what tangible gains Russia gets, but only vaguely and generally says what Ukraine is going to get." Not that Trump could understand but this is a terrible precedent to set. Even worse if Ukraine can't join NATO. This will be another perpetually tense and fortified border ala the Korean DMZ. And the Baltic states will look at this as exposing them for future aggression from Russia. Trump is a complete sell out to Putin. Need to check the calendar again. I thought this was 2025, not 1938. Walk away Ukraine. I guess Trump believes, since US Republicans have accepted Russian occupation of the Oval Office, Ukrainians should accept occupation of their country. Not. Gonna. Happen. At the always present risk of sounding like a lunatic, the so-called “deep state” has long been in the business of shaping opinions and manipulating perceptions. This is not a conspiracy, this is their stated objective. Manufactured consent. We are immersed in their machinations at an epic level and have been for decades.
A general reduction in Testosterone level would certainly be very, very much in keeping with their objectives. “Toxic masculinity” is an article of faith with the whack jobs on the left. It would be surprising actually if they haven’t investigated methods of emasculation, whether simply through the schools - very effective, since Boys are now treated simply a species of defective Girls, but also at the macro level some sort of chemical, biological or perhaps electronic means. Diet plays a huge role as well. High quality animal protein is expensive relative to junk carbs, soy and other ersatz foods. Posted by: Common Tater at April 24, 2025 10:30 AM (L+MB1) 159

If we bring it back to the original, stated goals, Ukraine also will not join NATO. Posted by: t-bird ======== Realism in foreign policy is recognizing facts on the ground. Ukraine is prostrate and no amount of Uncle Sam's money or advice is able to change the fact that Ukraine has been defeated. Trump will NOT send US troops to die for Ukraine so there is nothing else to do than extricate ourselves on the best terms possible. Euroland, trying to act to prop up a dying regime is simply trying to get their billions back that they lent, it is not principle. If Ukraine is defeated, they will most likely repudiate those debts having nothing to pay them with. Using realism as a guide, the US poses a diktat to the defeated proxy to end the war. If the proxy refuses, then you wash your hands of the matter and let will occur happen. One such thing just might be an internal coup to replace the deranged and disgraced Z man and then the coup leaders can then make peace. Another, would be Russia completes the conquest. I know the problem. I want to support the local brick and mortar shop but the prices can get uncomfortable. (I do get most of my pipes there when they have a sale. Not always a huge selection but I can see and handle them before buying.) Even with delivery charges, the blends from Boswell's and now KBV are a better value and for better tobacco.
Posted by: JTB at April 24, 2025 *** Not to mention, you can't even whiff the tinned tobacco to see if you like the aroma before buying. You can't when buying online either, but as you say, it's a better value. I wish the two local shops would have some estate pipes; I'd shop those. The prices for new Petersons top $100. When Saddam Hussein invaded his neighbors, murdered a million of his own people, and tried to assassinate an American president I was told the only reason to fight him was warmongering. Odd isn't it that things are different with Vlad huh? - (thinks about that premise along with all the made-up stuff that got us into two trillion dollar multi decade wars) Oh man, this is a fantastic point. I'm stealing it. Posted by: Boron Cobbie's Pope interview - What is a woman, and how old is the Earth? at April 24, 2025 10:50 AM (6GvqP) 207

From what the Dems and NYT failed to tell us about Garcia,
PJ Media link https://tinyurl.com/mtanp293 There is clear indications that Garcia was engaged in human trafficking in that link. A convicted human trafficker owned the van that Garcia was driving when caught in 2022 with his motley passengers. "Jose Ramon Hernandez Reyes, who Abrego Garcia claimed he was working for, had been previously convicted of smuggling illegal aliens into the United States." Beignets, though famous here, are hard to find aside from Cafe du Monde and Morning Call. Both of those are a considerable drive from me.
I was amused when I first visited northern New Mexico in '92 and found that a sopaipilla is the same flaky, hollow pastry as a beignet, minus the thick white powdered sugar on the latter. I'd rather be in Albuquerque or Santa Fe right now anyway. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius ====== Not hard to make beignets at home with the Cafe Du Monde flour mix and confectioner's sugar. But given you loathe New Orleans, learning to appreciate sopapillas gives you a much broader range of places to get them when you move. But, I prefer sopapillas with cinnamon sugar rather than confectioner's sugar. Posted by: whig at April 24, 2025 10:51 AM (ctrM5) Posted by: Bulg at April 24, 2025 10:51 AM (77rzZ) 212

The cartels pay their media/government cover well.
Posted by: I used to have a different nic ======== I think the cartels are a key provider of voter fraud services for the Dems as well as enforcers. Plus supplying corrupt POS Dem officeholders with sex trafficking victims and drugs. Seth Rich was killed probably by MS 13 gangbangers for example. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius Way back when, my father was at Kirtland AFB for some ordnance school (think it was about nukes perhaps), and we spent our time in Taos, Albuquerque (saw one of the last riots there that resulted in the UNM's library being burned), and other scenic spots like Sandia Peaks and even White Sands/Los Alamos. 70's New Mexico was interesting but I have no desire to return. Economic Genius! Let's Have a $50 Minimum Wage! [CBD]
If you take leftwing economic theory to its local conclusion you just set the minimum wage (and welfare) to some absurdly high number and then everyone is rich. Of course every time they start down this road they spike inflation/costs so that people have more money but that money buys much less. Posted by: 18-1 at April 24, 2025 10:58 AM (t0Rmr) 225

Posted by: whig at April 24, 2025 *** It was still great in the '90s. Now, with the craziness that has infected the state and CO, I might like to visit but not to live there. I'm really fascinated by the questions around the original ending of Mark.
Posted by: Bulg ------- That is why I generally avoid Mark on the Resurrection. Textual analysis of the sources used for the Gospels becomes a time sink if you get really interested in the subject. I've read enough to figure it is mainly a scholarly fight over orthodoxy that I have little interest in. Most scholarly work becomes supposition rather than provable without additional information.
