Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. 46 degrees here at Stately Poppins Manor, with a high of 74 predicted. I mentioned last week that I was changing my work hours to start at 4.30am, rather than 5.30am, in order to get a jump on leftover work. So it begins. Will see you all on the Morning Report. Frankie Fabulous openly slapped it away because - he later lamely explained - he was only a man and didn't believe in that sort of idolatry. Which, IMO, only makes it worse. I stopped off to skim the ONT. Fletch was my guess for the '80s movie minute trivia too. I've never seen the whole film, but the snippet of dialog just sounded perfect for the attitude of the character in the novels.
Evening and morning, late toilers and early risers! I woke up way before I planned and have nothing really on tap today, so here I is. What's going on with you? Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 22, 2025 04:39 AM (omVj0) 10
Pixy, your choice of video is a charmer.
"Van der Valk" sounded familiar, so I looked it up. It was a British TV series about a detective in Amsterdam -- based on the novels by Nicolas Freeling. Though I've never read any of the book series, I knew of them. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 22, 2025 04:43 AM (omVj0) 11

A slice of toast w/ peanut butter and honey with my second cup of coffee will get me started. Perhaps I'll have a pipe or part of one; shave and shower; some eggs and bacon for the real breakfast. Oh, and I'll have to feed the Killer Kittenz From Outer Space.
Speaking of them, this week we're going to flea bomb my place -- take the cats out in their carrier's to Linda's, set off the poison bombs, let the place air out and clean up before bringing them back. The flea treatment I used on them, Pet Armor, has done almost nothing for them. If the bombing doesn't help, they'll have to get a stronger product. There's a pill that is $$$, but lasts three months. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 22, 2025 05:02 AM (omVj0) 16

It rained pretty solidly here yesterday -- a sprinkle in the morning, and then around 1:00 the heavens opened. Four inches' rain at the airport and about the same in other areas, right at rush hour. I am so glad I wasn't in it and didn't have to worry about which side of the avenue my car was parked on.
We may get more today and Wednesday, mostly in the afternoon. I plan to run all my errands on Wed. morning and be home before it gets bad. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 22, 2025 05:22 AM (omVj0) 21

Ivermectin is an anti-parasitic that kills both internal nematodes and external arthropods, large and small. For example, fleas, ticks, and mosquitos. They bite you, and they die. How cool is that? Contraindicated for certain specific “white foot” dog breeds, and turtles. Don’t give Ivermectin to your turtle.

Erf Day was started by, among others, Ira Einhorn, "The Unicorn Killer". On September 9, 1977, Einhorn's ex-girlfriend Holly Maddux disappeared following a trip to collect her belongings from the apartment she and Einhorn had shared in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Eighteen months later, police found her partially decomposed body in a trunk in Einhorn's closet. He, stalwart and brave, had fled to Europe, only to be returned to Pennsylvania, tried and convicted for her murder, and spent the rest of his in prison, where he died. Like all celebrated progressive leaders, he was pond scum. Celebrate his day by throwing another couple of tires on your outdoor campfires this evening, won't you? Do it for Holly! Shocked you had success with a bug bomb for roaches. You must lead a charmed life. Posted by: Dandalo at April 22, 2025 *** If my life were truly charmed, I wouldn't be living here! The bombs were done twice in a month, and the difference was dramatic. I also treated the cats I had then with a good topical -- that Walmart PetArmor is almost useless, I've found. Little Dagny has had the fleas a bit worse than Stirling has, and I think it's made her withdraw from us because she felt poorly. (Either that, or she needs a dose of kitty Zoloft for depression.) The PetArmor has helped a bit; she's spending more time out in the living room near us. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 22, 2025 07:07 AM (omVj0) 84
Salty, Prayers are sent to you during this difficult time of transition. RIP to your wife.

73 As a matter of fact, he was one of the best NCOs. He taught the UH60 repair course at Eustiis for a while, a compendium of Black Hawk knowledge. He was one of those farmer genius types. Equally at home driving a back hoe or doing highly technical things.

. . . I am returning to work today. I will take kids from loving homes to a hostile environment that they would want to skip. However, only 5 weeks f school left.
My school system offers 5 days of bereavement leave. I will work mornings (which is the absolute hardest time to get a replacement) and continue to do all the myriad of stuff that needs doing in the afternoon. Posted by: NaCly Dog at April 22, 2025 *** Good way to put it about school, Salty! Yes, doing some work to keep your mind and hands busy is probably a good idea. I once drove I90 across the northern US including Montana at about 45 mph, I had 50 bucks to my name, and a chevy citation with a V6 and a torque converter A/T and a long ways to go. Think I made it from Missoula to Belle Fourche on a single tank of gas.

Kiten report (though both my furry thugs are three years old now): Dagny La Siberienne is sprawled atop my briefcase on the living room chair. Big black Stirling is waiting for me to finish my pipe, and then he will probably invade my lap. In the meantime he's napping on the far end table.

Some jerks have decided that throwing a bunch of nails in the road is a good way to stick it to the man. It's been happening around here, and I'm seeing news reports of it happening elsewhere too. We had one in Mrs fd's tires yesterday.

Student Borrower Protection Center - is this another NGO scamming off tax payers?
'protection' ? How? Posted by: Ciampino - Boarding .... Captain ..... Captain! at April 22, 2025 06:52 AM (sPQoU) Look, these student loans given out are very expensive. They are using my electricity, my call center people, and my Oldsmobiles free of charge. So, if anyone mentions extortion again, I'll have their legs broken. "It’s estimated that generating a single AI-written response, such as a short email or paragraph, can consume as much as 0.14 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of energy — comparable to keeping 14 LED bulbs lit for one hour."
So we peons have to buy crappy appliances that save energy so AI can generate garbage. Posted by: fd at April 22, 2025 07:25 AM (vFG9F) 95
