![]() Two architecture firms teamed up to win the competition to transform the St. Francis of Assisi Church in Heerlen into a public swimming pool. Nicknamed “Holy Water”, the project gives the vacant church a new social function, while preserving the historic elements of this listed national monument. The plans from MVRDV and Zecc Architecten incorporate an adjustable swimming pool floor that will bring flexibility to the space, allowing it to host a variety of activities in addition to swimming. Originally built over 100 years ago in the south of the Netherlands, the church stopped hosting services in 2023, providing the municipality the opportunity to repurpose the building. A new pool within this national monument offers a solution for the increasing number of visitors to Heerlen’s existing pools, while giving the vacant church in the city center a new lease of life. The design that connects old and new, allows visitors to walk through the church’s aisles to reach the changing rooms or restaurant, both located at the rear of the church. Glass walls separate these passages from the climatized central pool space. To make room for the swimming pool, the existing floor will be carefully removed. The church’s pews will be reused by incorporating them into the separating glass walls surrounding the pool, providing seats for the swimmers on one side, while serving as bar tables for spectators on the other side. The old pulpit is even given a new function—serving as the seat for a lifeguard.More details and additional photos at the link ![]() A Chinese-made toilet brush designed as a parody of American President Donald Trump has seen a massive spike in domestic sales as a result of the tit-for-tat tariff war between China and the US. The yellow Trump toilet brush isn’t new. It dates back to the US President’s first term in office, when Chinese factories were churning out all sorts of Trump-themed products because of his popularity, both in China and in the US. A lot has changed since then, though, and today, many Chinese are buying the funny toilet brush as a way to ridicule the American president after he set massive commercial tariffs on Chinese goods. Chinese media is reporting a significant increase in Trump toilet brush sales as part of a trend called “Yiwu’s counterattack”. Yiwu City is home to many small factories producing low-cost plastic products like the popular Trump-themed toilet brush, so the “Yiwu counterattack” movement is seen as the country’s support for manufacturers directly hit by Trump’s tariffs. Not gonna lie - I kinda want one It is almost sundress season! A 2024 survey found that 67% of American users are polite to AI assistants, with 55% doing so because it's the right thing to do, and 12% hoping to stay on good terms in case of an AI uprising. Posted by: andycanuck (mZtdJ) at April 20, 2025 10:39 PM (mZtdJ) From my experience people tend to model interactions on the manners and behaviors on the people they are communicating with. When you are doing something like a cold call, or just a service based phone contact, the goal of the phone agent is to lead the interaction, not follow the customer's lead. There are tricks to this, but the main one is to be impervious to snits and maundering, and stick to the intent of the call - Politeness and respect really helps. In my limited dealings with AI agents, they tend to be talky, and quite polite. I wondered if that would mean that more people would start modelling their behavior on phone and text after that, being more verbose and mannered that what we have become in the last 50 or so years Posted by: Kindltot at April 20, 2025 11:00 PM (D7oie) 188

Thinking to way back when my dad was strong we sometimes hauled 50 small square bales of hay with a pickup. The hay ran around 60 pounds a bale. That 1.5 tons was plenty of bed weight even for the 3/4 ton pickups. If the FNM was not off by a factor of 10 on the # of rounds maybe the ammo runners were were pulled over because even a full size pickup would be over loaded and not handling real well. Or they were towing a trailer of ammo, but you'd think that detail would be included.
Typical FNM, either they left out a lot of detail or they are way off with the # of rounds. Posted by: PaleRider at April 21, 2025 12:20 AM (CKOCg) 322

Some of the nifty tools I find at swaps or garage sales will go home with me. Like that Milwaukee drill. A month or two ago, I got a "refurb" 1/2" drive 20 volt electric impact wrench at Harbor Freight, and it works great, and I already had charger and batteries here for the drill I use. I think I will buy another battery and charge before leaving, and take them and the impact driver home with me, because it's very handy, and will save me a lot of time spooling out air hose to run the air tools at home. Yankee magazine used to have a column where people submitted pictures of items to find out what they were used for, unfortunately the publication has taken a hard left turn, I don't read it anymore unless I find it at a doctor's office. I'm having a good day.
I'm in probate hell with my brother. Actually his wife. She's threatening to divorce him if I don't cave. I took care of Mom and Dad for years. That's not my problem. I'm not caving. If they want to burn through inheritance money suing me, that's their choice. I feel bad for him, but I need to watch out for me. All I want is a year. The breathwork I've been doing has really helped I think. And maybe the 5000 hours of meditation. I got one of these:
https://tinyurl.com/55bktnke at a yard sale in apache Junction a few years ago. Did not know what it was. Thought it might have been for seating bullets in reloaded cartridges, as sale was from the estate of a reloader. Well, no. Not a bad day. More heavy rain in the morning. Slept a bit late, but made the book thread. Easter family feast, MiladyJo's gyros, son-in-law's pita breads, Daughter's tzatziki and not-quite-successful but tasty cake in a rabbit mold. Son forgot the chocolate bunnies he had. Son's big Alaskan Malamute Jarl, and regular-size dog Bandit, Daughter & s-i-l's shaggy dog Chowie and small but muscular dog Maya got to run and play (and fight a bit) with our Malinois Daisy, leaving glorious muddy dog prints all over. Talked about the events of Easter morning. Rains ended, sun and blue sky showed up. Took a nap. Read some ONT, watched some vids and looked at too many memes. Now it's tomorrow.
