The Self-Declared "Party of Science:" We Don't Want to Know Why Autism Rates Have Increased 1300% Over the Past 50 Years, Bigots

RFKJr. talked about the skyrocketing rates of autism in children -- now 1 in 31 kids are autistic.

The numbers are worse for boys: 1 in 20 boys are autistic. In California, that number is 1 in 12.5, or about 8%.

RFKJr. wants to find out why 5% of our boys are now autistic (or 8% in California):

Rather than agreeing yes, we'd like to know the reasons for this, Democrats are demagoguing him for implying, they claim, that the developmental disorder autism is a bad thing we should try to reduce.

Elizabeth Warren says we should celebrate it and, I guess, try to get 50% of our kids to be autistic.


There may be some fraud in this exploding rate of autism. Rich people are no doubt having doctors diagnose their non-austistic children as autistic to take advantage of policies that allow, for example, students to take the SAT without a timer, which is a huge advantage to those students.

But most of this is very real.

So: Why? Does anyone in the Democrat Party even want to know why autism rates have increased 130-fold over a half century?

Or do they see this growing population of autistics as a natural constituency, and an army of loyal Democrat voters?

The below Xer identifies the non-reasonable rationale behind the Democrats' science denialism: They fear the rates of autism may be linked, or claimed to be linked, to the ever-growing vaccine schedule we're subjecting children to.

They don't even want to go there, so they do what child-minded Democrats always do: They just deny there's any problem at all that needs investigating.

There was INSANE over-diagnosis of ADD and ADHD in the 90s because there was money to be made.

So now they're 'autistic'.

Now how many government programs, 'special' teachers, programs, and whatnot try to charge parents to 'help' their autistic kid.

Table 1 - Big noisy extended family, all kids ~ 5-6 years old playing video games.

Table 2 - Family with a baby about two years old on some sort of baby i-pad.

Table 3 - Young couple with infant about 5 months old in a high chair with baby i-pad in front of it while parents didn't interact with infant one bit. And their conversation was nothing but "Pass the salt" kind of stuff, so it's not like they couldn't have taken a moment to talk to the infant.

Mebbe a solution is to divorce vaccine makers from pharmaceutical companies and actually do real publicly funded blind tests rather than relying on dubious industry tests. Far too easy to skew data and analysis to hide concerning information. I learned stats back in the day using medical examples (my interests were not straight up OLS friendly--e.g. binary, time series, abnormal distributions of errors, etc) and for that reason, can read most medicial research with help of the internet to interpret specialist language.

A lot of medical research doesn't reflect good practices in transparent and replicable research.

In other words, the autism "epidemic" is more of a mass hysteria, not a physical actual epidemic.

The reason for the increase in diagnoses?

-- Parents want special treatment for their kids in school -- if you get an autism diagnosis, your kid gets an "IEP" -- Independent Education Program, which allows the all sorts of extra privileges and advantages in school.

-- Mental illness is trendy and cool now among the TikTok generation, and the "trending" metal illnesses you can claim to have are Autism, DID (multiple personality disorder), gender dysphoria, and CPTSD (basically, trauma from longterm child abuse).

78 The thing that opened the door to this "epidemic" was the invention of the "spectrum" -- autism used to be a very distinct and obvious metal problem, but starting about 20 yards they expanded the definition to include every sort of autism-esque semi-symptoms, no matter how mild.

Used to be that to be diagnosed with true autism, you banged your head against the wall and yelled repetitive nonsense sounds and cringed in the corner or hid in a closet, and were uneducatable. etc. etc.

Now, if you merely fidget a little bit, or feel uncomfortable at a party, or can't concentrate during a boring class lesson, the BOOM you are on the "autism spectrum" and get a diagnosis.

My opinion: 90% of people currently diagnosed with autism don't really have autism, but are on 'the spectrum," which is a fabrication.

82 I have a grandson who was diagnosed with ADHD. I personally think this was a bullshit diagnosis as his mother just "didn't want to deal with an active boy." She looked for a way to medicate him so she didn't have to stay on top of him. Maybe it was suggested by his school. Either way it has screwed that kid up. He's considered borderline autistic now.

So... I think there's a connection between ADHD (if such a "condition" exists) and autism. One leading to the other, perhaps as a result of the medications given to kids with ADHD. Just my opinion.

There are differing levels of arthritis too, and possibly multiple causes. However, it would be nice to be sure, and it would nice to somehow put all the records together to see if something can be found to prevent even the worse cases.
The problem is that the incidence of near total disability is going up too, and that is not the sort of thing we can blame on Bruno Bettelheim/s "refrigerator mother" or any of the other previous attempts to explain the genesis of autism.

Honestly there has been extensive studies on this, and a number of studies are showing correlations, and when they come out, the controlling powers of public health pretty much declare that no solution can be found with bad studies. Doing these sorts of studies on children is one way to get your license pulled for malpractice, it seems.

Chronic fatigue syndrome fits your description, but fibromyalgia is still very much around and has some pretty severe pain associated with it. We don’t know what causes, same as a lot of neurological conditions, but there’s something there. Probably some nerve dysfunction or central sensitization.

I was a care provider back in the early '90s. At that time doctors were becoming interested in autism, it seemed to be the "in thing" among them.
I had one client who was obviously severely autistic whose doctor would change his prescriptions every couple of months, like he was hoping to find a cure.
I had another client, in his 40s, who had been diagnosed his whole life as "mentally retarded." Suddenly, he was Autistic.

Working with kids in the 2000s and 2010s, I saw parents (mostly moms) begin proudly introducing their kids to the group as autistic - like a parent in my day would have told everyone that their kid was a track star or quarterback or violinist or something. These parents really, really wanted you to know that they were a "Mom of an autistic child." They even had bumper stickers proclaiming exactly that - they were a hero!

We would have socially dysfunctional kids join our programs and half the leaders would instantly "diagnose" these kids as "on the spectrum." A few months later, those kids would be interacting with others just like any normal kid.

There are so many perverse incentives for labeling kids "autistic," that I don't know what to think of all this.

The problem with vaccines is NOT the vicci e itself, but the irritant they put into the shot to cause the white blood cells to be attracted to the point of injection. But I've mention to a few by far younger people that I don't see some young parents having face time with their child or children several times a day. No dining together, no real playtime together. Even storybooks that may be read are not being done with some degree of eye contact.

They'll allow kids to fall asleep whenever, give he/she a gummy or two to relax, put on a noise dampener and pray the kid(s) stays asleep. The kids learn to wake up, make a ruckus and want to be able to climb in bed with adults. No one ever gets a decent night of sleep.

Ignore a child, be fearful of parenting, and don't be surprised by the outcome. They're a great joy but also a huge amount of commitment and time.

(Not lecturing. My own are a bit squirrelly.)

Scott Adams is, as usual, wrong. For one, adult diagnoses of autism have exploded, including many self-diagnosed.

But children receive a lot more attention than adults. An “autistic” adult can just live their lives, but a slightly-off kid will get the attention of teachers, parents, therapists, pediatricians.

See, part of the problem with medicalizing every deviation from “normal” behavior is that it results in overdiagnosis. The system has to assign a diagnosis to get a proper billing code for insurance, so as soon as a kid sees a shrink they’re going to end up diagnosed with *something.*

These doctors noted a correlation between MMR shots in boys aged 18 months and severe autism, and said it warranted Further Investigation. They did Not say that it caused autism, but that the co-incidence was alarming and should be looked into.

The British medical establishment came after them like Reavers out of Firefly, stripping them of their medical licenses, ruining careers.

That in itself says something: if it's all BS, why would a young, successful surgeon at the Royal College of Surgeons burn down his career to bring this up?

223 Autism is a severe disability. There's been a Big Push to muddy the waters with "autism spectrum disorder" dx, or ASD, which is what some commenters must be thinking about. This, of course, is a way of misleading us into thinking this is just about socially awkward or introverted kids.

But classic or severe autism presents with loss of vocabulary/speech (toddler can no longer talk); inability to maintain balance enough to walk; "stimming" or often-violent repetitive physical movements, like the kid banging his head against the wall for hours; loss of toilet training; no longer making eye contact or smiling at parents AT ALL: parents describe this as their child emotionally and spiritually dying, leaving a zombie behind.

In addition, they are mentally retarded, and cannot take care of themselves. Parents who are getting old themselves and don't want to put their now-adult sons into an institution have even been known to kill the son and kill themselves, out of desperation.

Watch the documentary I linked, and you'll see what real autism is. This is the form that has skyrocketed since 1986.

I have a friend in her early 40s who added that tag to her self-identified list of "why I'm different" in the last year or so. She went deep into withdrawal from contact with people when Coof showed up, claiming that she had medical issues that routine contact with others would endanger her. Now she's up to three cats, she lives alone on the edge of town, and lately she has related that her gained weight is becoming a problem.

The difference between her now and eight years ago is striking and disheartening.

A good thing to check. They are expressed in breast milk, so you kid is getting them if you breast feed while taking them. I think it's probably multifactorial. In one family you can have autistic kid or kids and other siblings who are not, and sometimes they all are autistic. Even soz they may be autistic to different degrees. So it is some genetic, with some environmental trigger. It's not ADHD. Autism is not just hyperkid doesn't pay attention. They have communication issues, language processing issues, sensory issues, facial blindness. I have seen a lot of kids with special needs and autism. They are all different. It could be a lot of things. It isn't going to be an easy fix. Remember the Roman's used lead plumbing for a century... somethings are taken for granted....

228 A big part of it is that the diagnostic criteria have changed dramatically. Everything is being pathologized. What would previously been “a bit odd” is now “on the autism spectrum”.

I have a kid that actually has Pervasive Developmental Disability:Autisim. Comparing her to the kids Karens are proudly supporting is like chalk and cheese.
Lady, just because your kid is a bit weird doesn’t mean they’re disabled, or that their development is permanently retarded.

229 151, 223: Similar to the sudden loss of competence, including toilet training and speech, in our nephew when he was about 2 years old. My sister made his progress an almost full-time job (muscle, speech training, strict food issues, etc.) along with other family members and school personnel. It took many years, but now he functions in society (though he is socially naive), is pleasant and is employable at a basic level in his early twenties, travels, etc.

Definitions of "autism" are difficult.

My sister now works with teen kids diagnosed as "autistic" or "on the spectrum". She sees a great difference between those who got help (as with speech) as toddlers and those who didn't.

She went from a normal, smiling, beginning to verbally express herself, plying children’s games to no eye contact, no speaking, not wanting anything touching her skin after getting her boosters and 2 year old inoculations. It was like a light switch. Everyday my daughter lives with painful regret. We lost a perfectly normal little girl.
