7 6 While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of Simon the Leper, 7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.

8 When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. “Why this waste?” they asked. 9 “This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.”

10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me.

* Note: Christ never said this, it's a joke which relies on the Lord's well known sense of humor (observe the platypus).

17 The Sons of Mary seldom bother, for they have inherited that good part;
But the Sons of Martha favour their Mother of the careful soul and the troubled heart.
And because she lost her temper once, and because she was rude to the Lord her Guest,
Her Sons must wait upon Mary's Sons, world without end, reprieve, or rest.

It is their care in all the ages to take the buffet and cushion the shock.
It is their care that the gear engages; it is their care that the switches lock.
It is their care that the wheels run truly; it is their care to embark and entrain,
Tally, transport, and deliver duly the Sons of Mary by land and main. [...]

And the Sons of Mary smile and are blessèd–they know the angels are on their side.
They know in them is the Grace confessèd, and for them are the Mercies multiplied.
They sit at the Feet–they hear the Word–they see how truly the Promise runs.
They have cast their burden upon the Lord, and–the Lord He lays it on Martha's Sons!

22 Fun fact I learned recently: Golgotha - "the place of the skull" - turns out to have had ancient (even by that time) origins for its name. Recall David's defeat of Goliath, and how the head was taken as a trophy...said head was placed on public display for all to see. Over time the flesh rotted away leaving the skull...and the skull remained there for quite a while, sort of an ancient tourist trap I guess...anyway, the place it was kept came to be named for it: "The place of the skull".

And if you think that was coincidence, I have a house made of fragments of the True Cross to sell you.

65 I love what Tissot does with light and color. They bring out the many details in the painting and sets a mood that grabs the viewer. This is a scene as Jesus is being recognized as the Messiah and it is a serious moment, but not overburdened by what is to come. The people are worshipful, awed, but the atrium is filled with life, with the flowers, trees and birds. That relieves what the audience knows will follow. So very effective.

It is so different from his scenes of life in Paris society and not as dark as some of his other Biblical images. I wonder how it was received by the public.

70 Speaking of ministries, I was out walking my pup last week and down the road a ways met a man out hosing down his driveway. His dog was leashed nearby and we started talking about our dogs. I then blundered by asking him what he did for a living. Well, he has a home studio for video/audio productions, he's a coach (not sure of what) and he's a self-appointed New Age Hebrew Rabbi who runs a ministry. His ministry is based almost entirely around revelation chapter 12 & 13. As he started expanding on this theme I began to slowly edge away. Yesterday the pup and I took a different route.

75 I found this:

Invited to Bethany, where the siblings Lazarus and Martha reside, Jesus finds respite from his ministry and peace to converse with friends. Intent on listening to Jesus, the Magdalene takes a place at his feet—much to the frustration of Martha, who expects her help with the guests, Tissot relates. The Magdalene’s devoted discipleship proves unflagging throughout the narrative from the ministry to the Passion and the Resurrection; and, accordingly, her posture here at the feet of Christ finds echoes in later episodes.

83 My comment about the OT was a bit facetious. During Christ's earthly ministry he cited many Old Testaments scriptures, laws, prophets, etc. But he also preached about the things that were yet to come, so while not strictly preaching from the New Testament scriptural writings, he was preaching a ministry of hope, redemption and eternal life.

It's interesting that no one knows exactly when the canon of Jewish scripture was finalized. There used to be a widespread view that it was done at a rabbinical council in Jamnia late in the first century, but this has been pretty much discredited.

Of course, the Torah and the other books that Jesus quotes were considered authoritative, but it took a while for some of the others to be either accepted into the canon (e.g., Esther) or excluded from it (e.g., the Apocrypha). And nobody really knows when that process was completed.

108 Democratic Official Plots to Take Down Party Incumbents: “Less than three months after the young political activist David Hogg was elected as a vice chair of the Democratic National Committee, he is undertaking a new project that is sure to rankle some fellow Democrats: spending millions of dollars to oust Democratic members of Congress in primary elections next year,” the New York Times reports.

Very Smart Kid. look at all the dems that are doing nothing to protect our democracy. Every one of these delinquent members of congress must go.

Great idea. Let’s force vulnerable incumbents to burn money and energy fending off primary opponents because they didn’t scream loud enough.

Progressive Democrats always face this from “Moderate” aka corporate Democrats. If your constituents like you, they will re-elect you.

The problem is, at this moment in time, *more* Democrats is much more important than *better* Democrats.

113 Allow me to rant for a moment about taxes, and not just because of tax season, but also because Holy Week.
The government, by withholding income, has put themselves before you and before God by grabbing first fruits. Not by your choosing or gifting, but by their power.
They've essentially said all money property and wealth belongs to us, and we'll take our share first. You can have what is left over.
The very act of withholding puts us in a subserviant position to the government and it bothers me that it doesn't bother more people. I'd guess that's due to the psychology of getting a refund, which to many seems like a bonus instead of table scraps tossed down to us dogs.

JJ's link to a NYP story and the picture of todays art thread brought this back to my mind.

...so anyways, how is tithing supposed to work in this scenario? Do we use gross or net pay?

120 I find it interesting that no-one seems ever to have done a novel or movie about Lazarus.

Actually, thinking it over. A Lazarus story would be a tough one to right an interesting story about.

This isn't like 'Barabbas' or maybe "The Robe" where the main character(s) make major changes throughout their lives in the aftermath of Christ on Earth.

With Lazarus, well...to put it mildly...where's the doubt or the conflict within the character?

He's been dead. Knows what that's all about. He's been risen from the dead. He absolutely knows the truth about Christ. Christ is still at this point around.

There is almost nothing for Lazarus to dodo but follow Jesus and we already know what that's about as well.

I suppose he might wind up sacrificing his life confident in that he knows what's beyond or be martyred but...eh, I just don't see it.

it's tough to bring something new or interesting to theLazarus story. That's probably why no movie.

I suppose that Lazarus could be pissed off at Christ that he was raised from the dead. So...a weird comedy?

Don't see it as a great possibility.

John 11:2 It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped His feet with her hair…

John 12:4 But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said, “Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it.

Meaning no disrespect to the author of John's gospel, I do have some doubts about the thief accusation. I think Matthew kept the accounts, Judas just held the bag. The betrayer was vain and out for his own glory, but probably not a petty pilferer. Truly, his criticism was not out of love for the poor. He was already nitpicking in preparation to betray Jesus. He was no doubt extra miffed when Jesus scolded, “Let her alone…”

158 Jesus at Bethany, James Tissot
Thank you. It's certainly appropriate for Holy Week, but I'd pass hanging it.
---
Got Questions dot Org: What is the significant of Bethany in the Bible?

In small part, "Bethany is probably best known for being the hometown of Jesus’ good friends, Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. Bethany was the place where Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead (John 11:1, 41–44), it was the home of Simon the leper (Mark 14:3–10), and it was the place where Mary anointed Jesus’ feet with perfume (Matthew 26:6–13). Other references to Bethany are Mark 11:1 and Luke 19:29, which describe the preparations for Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the cursing of the fig tree in Mark 11:11–13, and the place where Jesus stayed overnight during His final week of earthly ministry, between His triumphal entry and His crucifixion (Matthew 21:17).

The name Bethany is translated by some to mean “house of figs,” as there are many fig trees and palms in the area; others translate it as “house of misery,” speculating that Bethany was a designated place for the sick and those with contagious diseases."

163 I always sympathized with Pilate. Judea was an unruly place to rule, Rome focused on stability in its remote lands, and Pilate tried to come up with peaceful ways out of the dilemma (having Jesus pitted against Barabbas for his clemency). Life was pretty cheap back then, though, and sacrificing one innocent man to stave off potential (deadly) riots probably seemed like the right call.

Nobody called it a joy ride when that female astronaut (who got stranded) went into space either. This has nothing to do with sex. It has everything to do with what the "astronauts" are doing on the ride. If they're actually piloting the ship, then they're real "crew" and it ain't a joy ride. If they're giggling THOTs in tight catsuits who don't do a thing other than sit in a seat, then they're passengers on a joyride.

She was asked to do it because of her celebrity, but now chafes at the idea that she's not taken seriously because. . . she was asked to do it as a celebrity.

There's a wonderful book from 1951, His Passion Forever, by Daniel Lord, S.J. (I know, I know), which treats Passion Week and the people involved as if it were a stage play, with people carrying out the assigned roles He gave them.

The chapter on Pilate is particularly touching, as Lord shows us how close Pilate came to being the first Roman convert (and possibly first martyr), and who might have ended up as a saint who would have been spoken of in the same breath as Michael the Archangel for his courage.

Well worth reading, if you can find a copy.

Well. . . First, hearing the words spoken in character is very affecting. Even if you have quibbles with their interpretation or whatever, it's a compelling medium for the message for people who are already familiar with the Bible, etc..

Second, this feels sorta like the forever conservative purity critics? This is an excellent way to reach non-believers, and it can introduce them to the faith in a medium they're used to (streaming) and could be a first step on a path to faith. Is that so awful? I got into it with classmates about this Kipling poem, pointing out that it was based on the mischaracterizing of Mary and Martha (who was not rude to Christ). Since my classmates were heathens, they had no idea about the Gospel but proceeded to argue with me that it was unnecessary to know allusions to "get" the poem.

The prof stayed out of it.

231 They made the whole trip a joke by who they selected to take it.

Shatner took the same flight, never declared himself an 'astronaut,' and was grateful for the experience having portrayed a spaceman his entire career.

People responded in kind with "hey, that's pretty cool."

These idiots are trying to portray themselves as something they're so incredibly not, it's offensive.

Their training consisted of "getting in and out of the pod" and "putting on and removing the seatbelts."

They basically experienced the pre-flight instructions from a flight attendant.

234 Pilate, nor Judas for that matter deserves any sympathy. Notice I did not say forgiveness, as that is up to the Lord. They allowed the devil to take hold and drove their decisions. Pilate let pride and his on well being in the form of politics drive his decision to put Jesus to death. He washed his hands of it only as a political matter because he lacked the courage and fortitude to let Jesus live. His gambit to free either Jesus or Barabus was simply another part of his inelegant scheme of self preservation. It was foretold in the earlier Bible (Isaiah, et al) because God knew the nature of man.

237 The whole PR stunt backfired. The idea was clearly to gain some positive buzz for private "spaceflight" by ... sending a gaggle of TMU bimbos into "space." Why anyone thought this was a good idea is beyond me. But whatevs. This is what they decided. The whole stunt (predictably) cratered into revolting wokeism and inevitable whiny accusations of sexism when the vast majority of people saw this for what it was. You'd think smart men like Bezos would learn from woke disasters like Blow Right. He didn't.

It's not like Tiberius was a virtuous soul himself, but Sejanus was awful and we can expect similar for his cronies.

I guess they are entitled to their opinion, and I am no where near as well versed in scripture to counter this with something from the Bible. I do think art is a medium to convey emotion. You remove a method in which hearts may be touched by Jesus in doing this.
