Speaking of Keepers

Perfect companion for the man who pretends to hear nothing?

A Spanish woman who had been claiming disability pension for an inability to speak following a work-related incident 16 years ago has been exposed as a fraud by a private detective.

In 2003, a woman working at a supermarket in Andalucia, Spain, was attacked by a customer. Following the traumatic incident, she was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and the loss of her ability to speak. After reviewing her case, Social Security granted the woman a permanent disability pension, but because this was a work-related incident, the insurance company was deemed responsible for the costs. Years later, as per regular procedure, the insurance company reviewed her case and found some irregularities, which prompted further investigation. A few years ago, it hired a private detective who discovered that the woman spoke normally but continued to cash her disability payments.

***

To prove without a shadow of a doubt that the woman could speak, the private detective approached her on the street one day and asked her for directions on how to reach a local department store. She fell right into his trap, eloquently explaining in perfectly articulated Spanish how to reach the store, not knowing that she was being recorded. With this final piece of evidence, the insurance company took legal action to prove that it was no longer responsible for providing disability benefits.

Much Better Story

British Woman Gives Birth After Receiving Transplant Womb from Sister and Pro Bono Surgery at Hospital

doof-Newborn-womb.jpg

A woman has spoken to the media for the first time after becoming a mother to the UK’s first child born from a transplanted womb.

Grace Davidson was able to have that opportunity thanks to her sister, who donated her womb in what Davidson called “a huge act of sisterly love.”

Born in February, little Amy Isabel was named after her aunt who donated the womb she was conceived in, and given a middle name of the leader of the team that led her surgery.

***

Davidson and her husband Angus had originally planned to seek a womb transplant in 2018, but the original donor proved unsuitable. The pair had received confirmation from Davidson’s sister Amy that she would be willing to donate her womb, which she used to have two children, but the pandemic delayed things further.

In February of 2023, Isabel Quiroga at Churchill Hospital in Oxford led a team of 30 in performing the procedure, after which Davidson became pregnant at the first attempt of IVF.

“I’m not often short of words but when the baby came out I was speechless—there were a lot of tears in the theater that day,” said Richard Smith, a gynecological surgeon at Imperial College Healthcare who led the team which retrieved the womb from Amy. “The whole thing is astonishing and incredibly moving.”

Fold our hands round her knees, and cling?
O that man's heart were as fire and could spring to her,
Fire, or the strength of the streams that spring!
For the stars and the winds are unto her
As raiment, as songs of the harp-player;
For the risen stars and the fallen cling to her,
And the southwest-wind and the west-wind sing.

63 LOL, that 'Bored' picture? When I was in 7th grade, our High School used to leave their Pole Vaulting mats out even over the weekend...

The Track and Football stadium had 30 ft tall bleachers... a few yards from an ivy covered 10 ft fence... and on the other side of the fence a major road... where the drivers could not see the mats.

We'd take the mats, put them under the bleachers... and jump into them... Po Po got called early on when we got the bright idea to have my friend act like we were fighting and he threw me off the top of the bleachers. Luckily... Local cops alread knew us and had a sense of humor.

81 I'm so sorry to hear about Jewell's passing. May the God of all comfort be with her family.

Posted by: CaliforniaGirl (Not CaliGirl) at April 14, 2025 10:33 PM (iW5Nq)

82 I will never forget Jewell's telling us about her family begging her not to go to her first TxMoMe. (Four years ago? Five?) Her husband and daughter told her she was nuts to go meet a bunch of people she'd never met, didn't even know their real names, on a ranch in the Texas boondocks. Jewells said they told her she could be the victim of a cult of web crazies hiding in the Texas woods. She told them she knew the character of the people she was conversing with on AOSHQ and was going to Corsicana. And the rest was good history.

83 I just realized that Jewells is probably keeping the pets company who've crossed over the rainbow bridge until we can join them.

Good night.

97 I met Jewells just once at a MiniMoMe organized by Salty Dog. Very nice person. A few years back, I consulted her about creating my own Etsy store. Sadly, it never got off the ground. I was especially impressed with her photography work. She presented her jewelry and other items in a really great way.

I never got into Richie Blackmore when he was in Deep Purple or the other group. I tripped over him as part of Blackmore's Night. I was visiting a friend's needlework store, and she had a CD playing. I didn't pay attention until a song popped up that I recognized as a pavanne from my medieval recreation days. I was instantly hooked.

139 Blackmore's Night is weirdly good. Haven't binged too much of them, yet, but it's Ritchie Blackmore in his folk, medieval music stage in life. I, for one, am for it. Also, the pretty lead singer is slightly younger than me and is married to him. He's what, 80 now? They have a kid. She's not half his age but real close though. Nice to see he isn't shooting blanks! Guess they've been together since the early 90s. He owns a pub because he's an English rock star, it's what the do! The English medieval/folk music should limit whatever hearing issues he has too.

142 $150 large isn’t that much any longer, esp. those living in NY or LA. Start it at 2% on incomes greater than $500,000, which is a reset to initial tax table adjusted for modern confetti-bucks.

My dad once suggested that they should only tax income on people who make less than $100,000 a year. He said everyone would bust their ass to make more money, so as to avoid the penalty, creating a huge boom in business. Hm.

Approximate, from Wikipedia:

Ritchie was born in '45, Candice was born in '71.

Engaged in '93. She was 22, he was 48.

Formed Blackmore's Night in '97.

Married in '08, at ages 37 & 63. (They almost waited until they met the "half your age plus seven" rule.)

Kids in '10 and '12, at ages 39/41 & 65/67.

Still together at 53 (54 on May 8th), and 80 (today, as we heard up in the Content.)

Yeah, Ritchie did alright.

Seriously cheap ammo. If I dollar cost average and count on my toes I can probably rationalize a couple thousand more rounds

250 No one comes here anymore. The liquor's still good. The beers are cold, pretzels crisp. I don't know.

Annie doesn't live here anymore
You must be the one she waited for
She said I would know you by the blue in your eye
Checkered suit, a fancy vest, and polka-dot tie
You answer to that description, so I guess that you're the guy

Well, Annie doesn't live here anymore (Annie, where's Annie?)
Annie doesn't live here anymore (Where's Annie?)
It's too bad you didn't call before (Where's Annie?)

t was spring
There was romance in the air
And everything seemed for loving hearts to share
And there was she, just as lonely and as blue
As she could be
That's the reason

Annie doesn't live here anymore

Doubt it could be made to work. Hormone issues, for one. And no plumbing to support it.

However, I would support a well-written anti-vivisection law that forbids, on pain of death, frivolous surgery performed upon persons in support of vanity or mental illness.

Posted by: Beverly
----------
The tax on SS is a function of total income. I don't remember the details, but one year I got hit pretty badly, so the next year, I had SS deduct more withholding
I've always known about capital gains and dividend taxes, because, except for the years I owned a small business and had to deal with depreciation, I did my own taxes. It's pretty clear on the forms.
The next year, the market was down and my income dropped about 15%. The SS tax went way down, and I got about $5k refund.

259 Hey hordlings! Hope all is well. Sorry to hear about Jewells. Greetings from SG - btw deaf lady story reminded me: Way back in the day, when Publius Redux was a young associate attorney working for an insurance defense law firm, we had a case of a guy who said he was rendered blind by the anesthesia during a fairly routine and otherwise uneventful operation. The surgery was in NYC, and the guy claimed to be completely blind and retired on disability to Florida. He showed up to his deposition with a cane and glasses, being led around by his attorney. About 6 months before trial, we had a private investigator look into it and, after a few days, the PI called and said we were going to receive an overnight package with video and to call him while we watched it. We rolled the TV into the conference room and had a watch party. Sure enough, there was our blind plaintiff, washing his car in the hot Florida sun; no glasses or cane, walking and seeing normally. Then he got in the car and drove it to the car wash to vacuum it. We revealed it during trial. The Judge referred him to the DA's office for prosecution and he got immediately arrested. Heh. Good times, good times.

Yeah jewels was really fun. I remember in texas she was staying at my hotel. I was downstairs at breakfast and she came strolling in with a bottle of booze in a paper bag, which she was bringing to the ranch. I looked at her and said so.... we drinking our breakfast today? lol. It was so easy to make her laugh. I'll really miss her.

As far as the resonator guitars go, yeah it all depends on who made it. I know absolutely squat about anything played on one, but like anything else with strings, the age, the maker, the rarity, etc, all dictate the price. 1930's is pretty damn vintage, and if it was in good playable shape by a good maker then $600 might not be that crazy.

That was Vinnie "The Chin" Gigante. That ruse worked - also I think they tried to convict him of a murder years and years prior but he got off at trial. I wonder if that factored into the decision to not pursue him after he was declared "non compos mentis" at his subsequent trial (for bribery I think?) for a long time. I mean, they must have known that he was faking his "insanity." It was only years later they built an "airtight case" and he was finally convicted of racketeering.

Believe me, Blonde M - it was even more awesome than it sounds. Picture a bunch of suited up young lawyers and two senior partners, in a big Manhattan board room in the late 90s, huddled around a roll-in TV, with the PI on the phone. We were cheering when the plaintiff was walking around washing his car. "Wait for it . . wait . . . for . . it . . ." the PI kept saying. When the plaintiff got in and started driving? The place erupted - one of the attorneys on the file went running through the office, yelling, ripping off his tie and button down shirt. All the attorneys and secretaries came running in, they thought it was some kind of emergency. We all went out to the local bar and got absolutely plastered. Yep - that day is etched into my mind - the trial was more understated. We removed the jury for a break and watched the video in chambers. The plaintiff's attorney turned ash-white and the plaintiff just took off his glasses, folded up his cane and tried to leave. The judge directed the bailiffs to detain him.

That's the part, omg lol. I was once talking to someone about handicap parking spaces, invisible disabilities and whatnot, and casually said "They're for blind drivers, too" and the guy said "Oh, really?" and I said NO, sillyhead, the blind don't drive, and we both cracked up.

And then the judge ordering the guy arrested on the spot! WOW, I bet the guy thought he was just going to leave in a very embarrassed state, never imagined he'd get cuffed!

290 I only talked to Jewels/Julie once but I loved listening to her rant about something here. This is an incredible place. I look at it almost like one of the houses that I lived in in college. No matter what the time of day or night, you could go downstairs and there'd be some people talking, laughing, drinking beer. And you were welcome to join in or not. You could fall asleep in the big chair and when you woke, the cast had changed but the talking and laughing hadn't.
And Jewels has just gone up to her room for awhile. We'll see her, and her dogs soon. But it sure is dusty in here. Should probably pick up some of the pizza boxes as I go up to bed.

No - but he submitted a bill that was paid immediately and got a lot more business from insurers after that!

The judge detained the plaintiff while he called the DA's office, who advised the judge to contact the police to affect the arrest upon the ADA's direction. The judge and bailiffs took him into the chambers on plaintiff's lawyer's request to wait and we never saw him after that. We later learned that he was arrested, arraigned and copped a plea. I don't recall if anything happened to the attorney, I think he claimed to be unaware.

When I worked in Siemens' tax dept in Manhattan (43rd fl), on another couple of floors was a law firm (whose name I forget). On one floor they had a cafeteria. We Siemens employees could use their cafeteria; it was good food and cheap. So anyway, my ex started noticing I was wearing only solid white or blue shirts to work when I had a closet full of color. So one day she meets me for lunch and we go to that cafeteria. We get our food and sit down and she looks around at all the male attorneys and all she sees are solid white and blue shirts. She looks at me and says now I know why. I replied, 'camouflage'.

313 Just got here to learn of Jewells passing. I met her at the Texas MoMes as well as many fun times here in the gray boxes.
We are all better for knowing her.

RIP my dear. You will be missed.
