Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Sunday Overnight Open Thread - April 13, 2025 [Doof]![]() Wholesome Content Florida ![]() This is the moment a nine-year-old boy said goodbye to his local trash collector after greeting him every week on the road outside his driveway for years. Noah Carrigan had waited for the same garbage man every Tuesday since he was five – forming a sweet friendship. But when the Florida county government switched to a new waste management company, Noah had to say his final goodbye on March 25. His mother Catherine Carrigan said the tradition began after Noah became fascinated with the big green truck that arrived every week. “It started out as something so simple—he was just fascinated by the garbage truck. “For years, every Tuesday, he would run outside to wave and the garbage man always waved back, honked the horn, and acknowledged him.” *** But, even as he grew older and busier with school, he’d still make time to say hello. In a heartfelt final meeting, Noah handed the sanitary worker a handwritten note and some gifts, along with a bottle of water to thank him for years of kindness. “When we told him it was the last time he’d see the garbage man, he immediately ran inside to write a note and grab some of his old garbage truck toys to give him. “He wanted to say thank you. It was so sweet."More photos and a video at the link. Kids + animals = smiles

Definitely wholesome. A bit dusty, too. ![]() ![]() Ette Couture presents Easter Dresses and Bonnets, A Celebration of Spring and Style Easter is a season of renewal, and for centuries, it has been marked not only by religious observance but also by the tradition of donning new, vibrant attire. Easter dresses and bonnets have become symbols of the holiday, blending faith, fashion, and the joy of spring. Let’s explore the rich history of this fashion. New Clothes for a New Season The tradition of wearing new clothes at Easter traces back to early Christian practices in Europe, as early as the 4th century. The notion of new attire was so significant that folklore from the 16th century warned of bad luck for those who didn’t wear something new on Easter Sunday. This belief is even referenced in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet (1597), where an “Easter suit” is mentioned, highlighting the custom’s deep roots. The Victorian Era: Bonnets Bloom and Dresses Shine The 19th century, particularly the Victorian era, was a turning point for Easter fashion. Easter Sunday became an occasion for women to showcase their finest attire, with dresses and bonnets taking center stage. By the 1870s, the New York City Easter Parade on Fifth Avenue formalized this display, where fashionable women strolled to show off their bonnets after church, turning the event into a social spectacle. ![]() NYC Socialites ![]() Pop Culture The early 20th century saw Easter dresses and bonnets reach new heights of popularity thanks to media and pop culture. Irving Berlin’s 1933 song “Easter Parade” captured the glamour of New York’s Fifth Avenue with the lyrics, “In your Easter bonnet, with all the frills upon it, you’ll be the grandest lady in the Easter Parade.” Bonnets grew ever more extravagant, sometimes featuring oversized flowers, stuffed birds, or even entire Easter-themed vignettes. Cornelius Vanderbilt with his wife and mother, 1931 ![]() Easter Parade 1940 ![]() ![]() Easter Parade 1947 ![]() If you think complaining about badly behaving people is a recent thing, you would be wrong! ![]() No ‘Ette Couture would be complete without Melania, and I like to think she would appreciate the focus on the 5th Ave. Easter Parade. For her first White House Easter Egg Roll in 2017, Melania wore a baby pink dress by Herve Pierre with pointed Laboutin flats. This year’s event will be held April 21, and I can’t wait to see what dress choices are made! ![]() Born in 1955: Louis Johnson from Brothers Johnson (El Rushbo bumper music!) Well, one night I had to drive through said shitty. It was dark for a city because the street lights were poorly maintained and sure enough as I was doing 25 mph or so I hit one of their new speed bumps. And...I could feel my car get airborne. You'd think I would have remembered *CO* was one that had to ditch its 420 mile marker... apparently there are several Western states with this issue, and in one article I found, the National Laughingstock (WaPo, being retards in broad daylight) helpfully published a *map* of all the remaining 420 mile markers. Except it's behind their paywall, so I guess that makes it ok.

Traffic circles - I would once have assumed they were always a wrong thing. Euro nuttiness.
But here in town there is an intersection of two two-lane roads which get a lot of traffic, especially at rush hour. I remember when it was a four-way stop. Traffic in one direction would back up for a mile. Later, they put in stoplights, but no matter how you timed them, there was a backup one direction or another. One solution would be to widen the roads to permit left-turn lanes and the complicated stoplight sequences that entailed. Significant private property would be annexed, including a significant portion of a golf course. I had my doubts when they turned it into a roundabout, but - aside from the occasional idiot who doesn't know how to yield - it has worked very well. No place else in town needs one, but it works. I was told that members of certain German international aid groups feel very bad when this sort of thing happens, because they managed to get the Indonesians to only use biodegradable tarps and sand bags. See, there is a lot of illegal farming, with poor people going into protected jungle to put in their little gardens. Previously the small farmers would use blue tarps because they were cheap and could be seen by air patrols who would come in to evict the small farmers, but the biodegradable ones blend in and can't be seen from the air, so the farmers stay out in the jungle where they can be eaten by giant snakes.

Traffic circles work quite well as long as they are large enough diameter to take large vehicles and have simple rules for all inbound and outbound traffic.
I have seen one where there are dedicated right turn lanes that bypass the circle completely, but not on all four ways into it. And the same circle has markings that say you have to exit if in the outer lane of the circle, but not at all four exits. The only 'rule'worth remembering is that some guy on the inner lane may cut you off to exit if you are in the outer lane... Not that you have to be in the outer lane to exit. Land yachts could cruise at 100 some a little more all day. Top speeds generally around 120. When Mercury was competing at NASCAR they built a showroom Marauder that would cruise at 150. Catalina's and Dodges of that era probably could also.
Tom McCahill did a test with '59 Buick LeSabres for 10,000 miles with an average speed of 105. At 108 they would start to heat up in a number of minutes. Construction and burn behavior I can get more into. La Bomba I guess was one of the first extra-strong cigars. Inside the box is a big warning label that its not for newbies... I really like the Man O' War product line. So I guess that my preference is towards the full bodied... and on sale. Did consider doing a 'cheap cigars... cheap' write-up. But not much of a writer. Maybe a series on Victor Sinclair next time I see their combo pack on sale... "And the maduro, it tastes like a maduro... a little squishy..." Also like some of the mild cigars too though. DataRepublican (small r)
@DataRepublican Apr 13 Over the last few months, we've come to a realization that should have landed much harder: NGOs weren't just adjacent to government, they were the parallel government. We were shocked. I was too. But looking back, it's exactly what you'd expect. NGOs operate outside the chain of command. They answer to no electorate, no oversight, no public mandate. They can push any agenda they choose without accountability. So the real question isn't how this happened, or even why. The real question is: why were we surprised? The moment Biden took office, the plan was already in motion. NGOs had the infrastructure, the logistics, the funding pipelines; everything ready to go. They didn't need permission. They just needed power. And when they got it, they had it all set up from day 1: overnight, we were flooded with illegal immigrants under the cover of a coordinated strategy that had been waiting in the wings. ---------------- cont Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at April 14, 2025 12:39 AM (wCq0Y) 306

Nor any bottles of Lancer's, which was some kind of wine-like product. I do have some Pinaud's Bay Rum, and will use that, if I ever shave. Posted by: they put lil' Miklos on a stack of phone books and Sears catalogues for his first haircut at April 14, 2025 02:10 AM (UOzvC) 350
