Ted Kotcheff dies at 94.
During his career Kotcheff directed stars such as Jane Fonda, Burt Reynolds, Gregory Peck and Kathleen Turner, landing Hollywood jobs after years spent directing productions in Britain, Australia and Israel. In Canada, he directed two adaptations of novels by his former roommate Mordecai Richler — The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz and Joshua Then and Now, both of which won domestic film awards. But he was best known for his work in the 1980s. He directed 1982's First Blood, the first of what would be five motion pictures featuring troubled Vietnam vet John Rambo, and seven years later was behind the lens for the improbable hit Weekend at Bernie's, which saw two hapless underlings cart around the dead body of their boss as party guests carried on unawares. In later years, Kotcheff served as executive producer for nearly 300 episodes of one of TV's longest-running shows, Law & Order: Special Victim's Unit, directing seven episodes of the NBC series. Empires usually aren't conquered by foreign foes.
The Soviets collapsed because enough people internally realized the system sucked and wanted change Conversely the British fell because enough people internally decided it wasn't worth being a great power any more. The Spanish fell because they couldn't run an economy with almost literally all the silver in the world. and on and on. I think you need to go all the way back to the classical age to find a major Empire that primarily collapsed from direct military action by their enemies excluding, perhaps, Napoleonic France. I've got so many stories on my Android Google homescreen about students being deported that I don't even know if I'm reading the same ones over and over. Of course they never say anything more than "She had a parking ticket, which she promptly paid." I kind of wish State and Homeland Security would make the cause part of these records public. Read one today about a Russian researcher at Hah-vahd who completely inadvertently brought in some illegal frog embryos from France. The article could have been written by Leo Tolstoy it's so long, and about 6/7 of the way down you find out she did it knowingly and even communicated with her superior about smuggling them in. Oh the horrors. She says America is becoming a very dark and different place, and she wants to go back to "paradise" -- meaning the America where she could get away with this sort of thing. I think Kublai was a grandson, though speaking of Genghis's offspring, his eldest son was almost certainly not his.
Genghis's first wife was abducted by a neighboring tribe and "married" one of the tribesmen. Genghis set about putting together a force of men to get her back, but it took him time and based on how long his wife, Borte, was with the other tribe Jochi was probably the son of one of them. But Genghis treated his wife with respect after getting her back and forced the fiction that Jochi was his on his followers...a rather humanitarian touch for someone that had no problem killing millions of people. Note, he did marry other women besides Borte, and forced others into concubinage and raped countless more. Posted by: 18-1 at April 11, 2025 11:42 PM (t0Rmr) 121

Based on what I’m seeing and hearing from whistleblowers, there’s a very real possibility that the biggest contributor to our atmospheric pollution (or PPM which is used to assess climate change) isn’t your fireplace or your car—it’s the lingering effect of geoengineering and stratospheric projects. Interestingly enough, CQD was being phased out, and replaced by SOS around 1908-1909, although some steamship companies clung to the familiar CQD. Titanic sent out both distress calls over the course of the sinking.
No less an authority than Marconi himself stated that CQD was not any kind of an acronym, just an agree-upon telegraphic code for a distress call directed at all stations who could copy it. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at April 11, 2025 11:51 PM (8zz6B) 134

So. Got excused from jury duty today. Three days of filling out a 50-question form, and sitting through inane voir dire questions. I finally got called up to sit in front of the jury as a potential alternate. I muttered to my seat mates, "looks like I'm going to the show." Mild chuckles.
Defense attorney asks me what I meant by that. "Baseball term", I replied. He pointed out that from my current position, I was still on the farm team. "So Triple A? I'm good with that." After the break a few jury members were getting excused by defense and prosecution. Prosecution asked to excuse juror 16. Judge had to remind him he could only excuse jurors 1-12. I did a quick count and realized he meant me. Sure enough, an opening occurred when juror 11 was excused. Before I could take the seat, he asked that juror 11 be excused. Dr. Keiva Lark, 53,... put her feet in the boy's lap and told him to rub them because 'he didn’t have anything better to do with his hands,' the victim and two witnesses told police. The middle-aged teacher then allegedly scolded the boy for not doing it properly before demonstrating the 'correct' way by massaging his arm and shoulder. Lark is also accused of telling the victim she was doing this to teach him what 'foreplay' was for when he got a girlfriend.
Several days later, Lark admitted to a co-worker that she had 'crossed the line,' the co-worker told police. Oh. Yeah. I think that might be possible.
Not a baseball fan, apparently. Posted by: Joe Kidd Well, we know which side was going to argue a bunch of obscure subsections of the law and didn't want the half-asleep guy on the jury.
