Gen Z discovers Mr. Coffee. Film at 11 Government Is Our Friend How Congress Throttled Indoor Water Flow, and Why We Must Liberate It The Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPAct) enshrined a sweeping federal intrusion into energy policy, setting new targets, standards, and mandates on everything from oil and renewables to household electricity — and it passed on a near unanimous basis. Buried in 358 pages of major reforms, a relatively trivial restriction on showerheads, toilets, and faucets went largely unnoticed. Yet the policy choice was clear: in an effort to conserve water, Congress restricted showerhead flow rates to 2.5 gallons per minute (gpm), a minimum 37.5% reduction from the unregulated industry standard that previously ranged between 4 and 10 gpm.Mine doesn't totally suck because I removed the restrictor. Police confirmed she was standing in her own yard and also was not involved in the hit-and-run. Ah, the joys of in-person office work: co-workers, and the chance to peer into the mind of the average leftist. Today one was ranting, practically yelling, about the tariffs and their implications. At one point he went on about how factory jobs will never be on-shored, because, I quote, "nobody wants to put on a tyvek suit and spend all day making microchips." Yeah, because it's inconceivable that people would accept being mildly unpleasant for a paycheck. Working on a factory floor in a tyvek suit is so much worse than being in a coal mine, or a meat-packing plant, or a chicken farm, or, oh, I don't know, working construction! (The office deals with a construction-adjacent field.) The guy is two steps away from saying nobody would want to stare at computer screens all day clicking a mouse, so we should be happy to see those jobs sent off to India. Idiot...
And in the past, this same office has complained about the hollowing out of our middle class, complaining that people don't make things anymore, and complaining about how unions have no power any more. Well, perhaps if factories were still a bigger deal... If I didn't need the paycheck... Posted by: Castle Guy at April 10, 2025 10:13 PM (Lhaco) 33

Brave AI: "Siemens lawsuit"
Siemens has been involved in several lawsuits, including one related to the misappropriation of confidential competitor information. In September 2024, Siemens Energy, Inc. pleaded guilty to stealing confidential bid information from General Electric and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which it used to win a bid for a Dominion Energy project. As part of the resolution, Siemens agreed to pay $104 million and face a three-year term of organizational probation. Additionally, Siemens is facing a lawsuit regarding its 401(k) plan, where participants allege that the company misused forfeited retirement funds to reduce its own contribution costs, potentially at the expense of participants' best interests. Furthermore, Siemens Industry Software Inc. has filed software piracy lawsuits against individuals who allegedly used pirated versions of their software for profit. Lastly, Siemens is also involved in a class action lawsuit related to its Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCI), where plaintiffs claim that the AFCIs are defective and cause frequent nuisance tripping "I'm Not Paranoid But" Posted by: gKWVE at April 10, 2025 10:19 PM (gKWVE) 57

At one point he went on about how factory jobs will never be on-shored, because, I quote, "nobody wants to put on a tyvek suit and spend all day making microchips." Yeah, because it's inconceivable that people would accept being mildly unpleasant for a paycheck.
It's definitely not the way most people would choose to spend the day. The suits are a pain, you can't scratch your nose or your butt, you have no idea what the weather outside is like, and the yellow light makes you feel like a mushroom. Worst of all, it's a 20 minute process to degown, leave the airlock, go to the bathroom, reenter the airlock, and regown. Salaries are high for a reason. Posted by: TRex at April 10, 2025 10:18 PM (IQ6Gq) I read that narrative by Butch several days ago. I shuddered reading it. The correct by the book play is to abort docking and move to a safe pre-planned location out of the station's orbital path. But if you fear you cannot safely enter due to unexpected failures, with perhaps more to follow, you're in a Bad Spot, potentially leading to what we at JSC call a Bad Day (loss of vehicle and crew). The only option is to somehow dock to the ISS for refuge. I did not know before this Butch interview that he was against returning in Starliner. This fills-in a gap for me about why NASA top management called-off Butch and Suni returning in Starliner, disagreeing with Boeing's and some high-ranking JSC engineering recommendations that it was safe for them to do so. Vehicle Commander was no-go. End of debate. Posted by: Gref at April 10, 2025 10:53 PM (aBgBM) 154

Hmm.. can anything catastrophic occur (externally) if an engine suddenly flames out due to low fuel? Sounds like a stretch. But I wouldn’t want to try it.
Posted by: Common Tater at April 10, 2025 10:43 PM (vSCm4) Normally, if the engine quit, the helicopter could descend by auto-rotation, which is the helicopter's counterpart to gliding in an airplane. I added a shower to house I had a few years ago and was having a hard time finding a shower head with decent flow I liked. I ended taking the restrictor out of one, a round metallic disk which had a number of 1/16" holes drilled in it. Taking it out completely resulted in a very harsh, powerful spray that was too hrash and hard to adjust at the valves so I put it back in but drilled out the holes to 3/32", which increased total cross-sectional area 123% so the rated flow of 1.75 gpm was now 3.9 gpm (assuming linear flow-area proportionality) and could be adjusted down with the valve controls to desired comfort if you wanted. The video shows the loss of the rear tail rotor which is in and of itself catastrophic and the pilot now has no rudder control. Though he tried to pitch the bird down to gain airspeed for a attempt at a full down auto rotation, without the rear rotor, he was doomed but did the best emergency sequence he could attempt. Speaking of solid oxygen (there are several solid state phases of oxygen, read if interested. At ridiculous pressures solid oxygen becomes a conductor, almost a metallic oxygen) and SpaceX: In one of the 2016 early days of the Falcon 9, one blew up on the pad. It was due to solid O2 forming and compromising a helium tank. The helium tanks store very cold helium gas under pressure. Much colder than the freezing point of O2. The sub-cooled O2 used for the oxidizer was already near the freezing point, infiltrated the carbon fiber pressure tank material, and then froze. That weakened the material, and when the helium tanks went to full pressure, the result was enough activation energy to cause the solid O2 to react with the carbon, which set of an explosion. The hypergolic propellants are very simple, and very reliable. No ignitors needed, no “spark plugs” or anything like that. They are extremely corrosive, however. While the Apollo lunar module engine design was thoroughly tested, it had to work, or they were stuck on the Moon. And the corrosive aspect of the propellants meant they couldn’t test fire the actual engines they used. The first time they tested a specific engine, was on the Moon.

Fired up the riding mower for the first time this year. After ten minutes of mowing I suddenly heard a terrible grinding sound when the blades were engaged.
Now, this is the Oak Island of mowers. Seems like there is always something going wrong with it. This noise was one I hadn't heard before. Poking around underneath it, I found one of the blades was no longer connected to its drive pulley. I believe there will be, or what will end up being, a split in Humanity's future, with the space exploration group getting out of here. It might take another two hundred years. First we have to have the moon set up as a base for Mars. Then Mars has to become functional for humans. Probably by that time, advances in propulsion will have happened and now we're using the relative low atmosphere of Mars further out in orbit as a jumping off point for leaving the solar system. At one point he went on about how factory jobs will never be on-shored, because, I quote, "nobody wants to put on a tyvek suit and spend all day making microchips." Southend United is my English football team!
20 years ago, I hated soccer, and my only sister's husband was British, and he told me I had to participate. So I looked around, tried to find a team. It wasn't going to be Champions League, or even First League. Suddenly I found a team, in a great place, Southend-on-Sea. Youtube it. And then I became a Shrimpers fan. The Old Blues have had quite a time, Promoted and then Relegated, scandals and bankruptcy. BUT. In the very early days of Twitter, there were not many tweeting about Southend. And I was one of them. Suddenly I got followed by a few people. The radio announcers for Southend! My claim to fame. I have a jersey and everything. Someday I will make it to Southend, which I fantasize is something like Santa Cruz. https://tinyurl.com/SUshrimpers Posted by: scottst at April 11, 2025 12:56 AM (qcvs8) Posted by: 13times at April 11, 2025 12:56 AM (51bfA) 338

The Kraut elections demonstrate the evil folly of proportional representation. Look the results here: https://tinyurl.com/25jcpxwv Bundestag has a total of 630 seats. Scroll down and look at the district results. CDU won nearly all the seats in West Germany, AfD won nearly all in the East. By district winner alone, the Bundestag would be over 90% CDU and AfD together. The other idiots would have only a tiny fraction of the seats. But no, proportional representation means the seats must be allocated proportional to the share of the national vote, past a 5% minimum threshold (some special DEI type parties are exempt). A tasty walnut recipe. Fesenjan. Iranian stew made with walnuts, chicken or beef, turmeric, salt/pepper.
"it is a relatively easy stew to make, but it must be cooked slowly to allow the flavours to develop in the sauce. The consistency should be thick and creamy and the colour almost black. The distinctive flavour combines the nutty taste of ground walnuts with the sweet and sour flavour of pomegranate extract." It tastes even better than it sounds. Oh, this is hard to describe.
Use a thick bottomed pot. Lightly grease the bottom of the pot. Put the cooked rice into the pot. Place lid on top. Add enough heat so the rice in the bottom of the pot browns and gets crunchy. It takes time to get like that. Then when the rice is cooked you then invert the pot and slam it on a wooden cutting board and the rice pops out with the browned rice facing up. My Iranian neighbor would use the stick end of a wooden spoon and insert it into the pot of rice leaving maybe fifteen voids, them moisten a tea towel and place it over the top of the pot and then put the lid over the tea towel. You can line the bottom of the greased pot with thin sliced potatoes and then rice on top. That method is less tricky. Posted by: 13times at April 11, 2025 02:28 AM (51bfA) 385

>> It would make more sense if they were all elected at-large, and each party got its percentage of reps,
It's a convoluted system, but basically the number of seats is greater than the number of districts by a good bit. If a party wins more district seats than it's proprotional share, they call those overhang seats. One scheme just let them keep those seats and expand the total number of seats to maintain proportionality. This can result in larger parliaments. This happened in the German system, and the Bundestag could get really big. They've changed it, and now parties can't keep their overhang seats.
