Daily Tech News 10 April 2025

Top Story

  • The cost to query advanced AI APIs has dropped 99.7% in the past 18 months. (Tom's Hardware)

That's a pretty dramatic shift. What's causing it seems to simply be competition.

Hardware costs have come down - a bit - and the new hardware is also more energy efficient - a bit.

Training costs for creating new models have soared, on the other hand - DeepSeek's bullshit notwithstanding - but investor money keeps pouring in to cover that.

1 G'morning Pixy and Horde.

The only sensible way to handle Windows 11 with this Copilot nonsense is to firewall it off so it can't talk to the mothership.

10 Simon and Garfunkel, damn it makes me feel really old, but those were good times for me. I was a teen, and my family was a poor family living on Campbell's soup and pancakes. I have the LP somewhere, must look for it, as I look through my rather large LP collection, which my family will just throw in the dumpster when I'm gone.

38 So Mrs VIA's overeducated asian friend calls, all in a tither about the market, Trump and tariffs.

So I ask her if she has been brought to the emotional precipice by the reporting of the media.

And of course her response is that why yes, it's all over the mainstream media about how Trump is going to destroy our economy because of his uneducated ways.

Then I asked her if this is the same media that lied to her face about Joe Biden's physical and mental decline in order to influence the Presidential election.

Simply put, they have no desire to see Trump, nor this nation to succeed. So what are the chances that they are lying to our faces again.

And with that, she took a step back from that emotional cliff.

Till the next time they lie to her face.

Because she is a very educated asian woman.

And smart.

Speaking of Hal, I just wound up a long "chat" session with Grok. Damn, it impresses me. Topics included differential geometry and rambling about the physics of the fiction Epstein Drive from "The Expanse" (which is actually possible with known physics, it's just the engineering is way beyond anything we can do now).

It's beginning to dawn on me, just what we have with Grok. I won't call it "intelligence". It's a "system" that has access to the body of human knowledge, far, far, far more than any one person could ever hold, and can use that.

It's a talking library of human knowledge. Rather than having to look things up yourself, from some wide array of knowledge and then having to put it all together to answer the question, it does it for you.

THis can be very useful.

In it, I was trying to work my way through a crowded airport to catch a plane. Apparently the airport was Denver's; why I'd gone there I don't know. Also, I'd mislaid my long tweed topcoat (which in real life I do not have one of) and my fedora, but I didn't have time to look for them. My ticket was in my leather jacket pocket, though. I had to find the right concourse and gate while carrying (not wheeling) my luggage. Then, as I spied my flight info, it also said "Delayed."

Makes me glad I haven't flown since 2014.

88 Anyway! 'Tis Thor's Day again, and a cool morning, 57 F., high about 80 today. No rain for a while, warm days, a slight drop in the high on Friday and highs in the mid-70s for the weekend. We had this kind of weather at this time in 2020, when so many of us were sent home to "work," and I developed a taste for not having to commute. If that had not happened, as well as being threatened with termination over the clot shot, I wonder if I would have gotten the idea to retire this year?

No work, K v C -- I put in my papers in January, and my last day was 3/31. I''m sleeping later and going to bed later, but I'm still a morning bug, I guess. In the last ten days I've been busy arranging my finances, setting up a new-to-me computer in my bedroom, having maintenance done on the car, etc.

Yesterday a grizzled fellow about my age stopped me at the grocery store and asked if I'd ever done some TV or movies. I said no, only in school, but I'd been in radio for some years. He said, "You've got that character actor face! Go check into Hollywood South. You'll have to post headshots and so forth, but you really should try it, you never know." Wouldn't that be odd, to get extra work in commercials or something, when years ago I wanted to be a comic character actor (I wanted to be Bill Murray before there was a Bill Murray!).

The real question is, what is Trump today according to the trolls and panicans
?

- an idiot, destroying our economy by using techniques that 20-something journalism majors don't understand (market down)
- a quisling who folded and made the US a laughingstock because he was a-skeered of the market being down (market up)
- a nefarious villain manipulating the market purely for the benefit of his billionaire friends (this one seems independent of the market)
- they throw us a curve and start shrieking about something completely different.

She and Mom and Bill were all in separate places around Charleston campaigning for the upcoming presidential primary.

I didn’t even know they were in town to be honest.
It was lunchtime and break between classes and I was walking around town, getting some exercise after downing a Subway sandwich and walked by a crowd around a deli.

There was a lady standing there with a big Clinton 2008 sign.

“What’s going on?” I asked her.
“Chelsea Clinton is in there, you wanna meet her?”
“Sure, why not.”

So I waited in line a few minutes, and got to shake her hand and told her, “I remember watching you as a little girl way back then, and now look at you.”
“Yes, well we all tend to grow up don’t we?”

Then I asked if I could take her picture (photography student, my Canon Digital SLR was strapped around my neck already) and she said yes and I still have that pic of her. In fact it’s the highest viewed photo on my Flickr page to this day.

Then I left, and talked to the lady outside holding the sign for a few minutes.

“So who are you voting for?”
“Ron Paul.”

That’s when the conversation ended.

171 They all got ballots for sure. That was part of the fraud in 2020 that got exposed... ballots appeared out of thin air. These are legit ballots. The illegals probably aren't filling them out, but they're considered legal because the person who has one has an ID (SSN).

Link should go to Epicurious. Let me know if you have trouble.

I've never made the caramel sauce because I feel like that would be gilding the lily, but of course CBD has and said it's good. I just serve the cake with a dusting of powdered sugar and a few raspberries.

177 Anyone have insurance through USAA? Thoughts?
Posted by: I used to have a different nic

Interesting timing. I was hit by a USAA insured driver just at 2 months ago. It appears I'm gonna have to sue the driver to get USAA to make me a reasonable offer.

Body shop bid $3600. They claimed my truck was only worth $5200. I sent them offers from all major sites... average over $10,000. They've increased my off to $8300. Wanting to total a $10,000 truck for $3600.
Okay, great, what's salvage value? $7100.
Assholes. I just want my truck fixed.
