Trump Builds the China Tariff Wall Ten Feet Higher While Announcing a "Pause" on Tariffs for Other Countries; Markets Soar

Trump announced he would "pause" higher reciprocal tariffs on many countries while sticking firm to a 10% "universal tariff" on all foreign goods.

James Madison informs me that the higher tariffs are only paused for countries that didn't retaliate:

The 10% pause is for everyone who didn't retaliate.

The EU did retaliate.

Their tariffs should still be at 35%.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison, looking for laughs with Ivan Reitman

China retaliated against the US by announcing an 84% tariff on US goods. This is a silly gesture, as China barely buys anything from us. They mostly just steal.

Trump trumped China by jacking the China tariff up to 125%.

The White House is clarifying that Trump's announcement of a 90-day tariff "pause" means that the "tariff level will be brought down to a universal 10% tariff" during that time, while "negotiations are ongoing."

That respite does not apply to China, which will see U.S. tariffs on its goods rise to 125%.

The markets liked the 90-day pause on tariffs for countries other than China.

Dow surges 1,800 points after Trump signals a 90-day pause on tariffs

Stocks surged after President Donald Trump announced a pause in tariffs, causing a market that's been under extreme pressure the last 5 days to explode higher.

The S&P 500 gained 6%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 2159 points, or 5.7%. The Nasdaq Composite jumped 8%.

Stocks touched their session highs as Treasury yields eased following a strong bond auction. Earlier, yields had risen above 4.5%. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield was last at 4.4%.

China announced it will impose an 84% levy on U.S. goods starting Thursday. This comes after U.S. tariffs of 104% on Chinese imports took effect shortly after midnight. The EU also approved its first set of tariffs on the U.S. set to start April 15.

Kevin O'Leary says he wants Trump to hit China with a 400% tariff to get Xi on a plane to DC immediately. He says all they do is cheat and steal IP, and it's time to bring them to heel.

He says that Xi will be kicked out of office the moment these high tariffs begin to hurt China's economy, so Xi will be forced to make major concessions to Trump.

The CNN panel explodes with All the Outrage, obviously.

My Dad worked for a university for a while before his retirement. His university sent him to China to set up a small branch of their business school. The terms the Chinese tried to force on the school were ridiculous.

They wanted to buy one copy of one book one time and get the rights to that book to reprint and sell to all students in perpetuity. They wanted all intellectual rights to all material taught in class after a single, lump sum payment that wouldn't even pay 1/5 of a professor's salary.

There were other terms I'm forgetting now, but it was incredible. The Chinese thought they were being generous by paying a pittance and allowing the school to operate in China.

He caved. 90 Day Pause. He basically lost Trillions in the market and got nothing in return.

I suspect he caved to Wall St., too. Bezos, and all of the others who are getting reamed by this shit have likely been screaming in his ear. Folks shouldn't be surprised when we go through this bullshit again in 90 days.

The conman put a 90 day pause on tariffs on all countries who didn't retaliate. He breaks it, then says I fixed it. Classic trump.

What he has been doing to total market manipulation. He drives the market down with tariffs, his tech bros short everything, make billions. Pauses tariffs, market goes way up. again, his tech bros that are in the know make billons again. This has to be against the law. Where is the SEC on this?

My prediction is that the EU is going to renegotiate CETA with Canada. Canada is going to circumvent the Monroe Doctrine by "un-officially" becoming an ad hoc member of the EU. Then, the sour heavy crude of Canada is going to be shipped to China for refining instead of the US. EU gets their petroleum that way no longer relying exclusively on Russia (or as currently, the US). Canada sticks it to the US by cozying up to China (which they already are, the Chinese pop in Canada is massive). China, Canada, and EU focus trade with each other.

I agree. If the end goal is to improve the domestic US economy and the standard of living for the middle class, then tariffs must stay high.

I don't particularly care if Vietnam is willing to give us a great deal on slave labor produced Nike sneakers.

That deal comes at the expense of potential sneaker factory working people here in the US.

That said, if the goal is to shift production from China to somewhere like Vietnam, while also trying to repatriate industries, I guess I can concede that making a smart political move (moving us away from reliance on China) at the expense of making the smart economic move (moving us away from reliance on everyone else in the world and bringing industry back to the US) might be a fair temporary trade off.

Here's some things I DO know & that I CAN understand: Honduras imports more U.S. beef than all of Europe combined. Japan has a 70% tariff on U.S. rice. Canada's tariffs are so high that they effectively prohibit the import of U.S. milk.

When people call for "Free Trade!," THIS is what they have in mind.

I have a lot of respect for Kevin O'Leary. When HE says we should have 400% tariffs on Chinese imports, I think that proposition is worthy of consideration.

229 I don't mind high frequency trading. It may make things more volatile, but it also makes things more liquid. You will *always* have a counterparty to any trade you name. Any price the book is at, there will be an order live and waiting for you when you want to pull the trigger. If you like the price, make the trade, or slap a limit order on and wait for it to hit the price you do want. Odds are, it'll wiggle its way up or down do where you want eventually (if you're being sensible about it at least). Who cares if they're ripping each other off at a trillion billionths of a penny every microsecond? You're still playing the same game, so play it well, keep your eyes open, and you'll be fine. Insider trading is an entirely different animal, and has nothing to do with algorithms or trade frequency.

The ruling was on jurisdiction, but they also said that the Trump admin had to allow for habeus claims.

Which the Trump admin never argued against (it was used as the "Trump loses even when he wins" narrative peddled by people like French).

The problem for illegal immigrants is that habeus claims are handled where they are being held by Immigration Judges, executive judges that Trump can hire and fire at will. It's an administrative procedure where the IJ says, "Do you have proof of being allowed to be here?" Which should last about 5 minutes, max.

And it can be bypassed by the illegal never even asking for the hearing, by offering them an agreement that puts them in their home country if they sign or in CECOT if they don't.

More importantly, the vast majority of the Chinese population are barefoot unskilled rural labor who don't have access to running water, electricity or paved roads and generally squat and shit in the street, because they don't know how to build outhouses. Good luck selling toasters and big screen TVs to stone age peasants who don't have electricity.

Everything proprietary at the gaming company was willingly exposed to the Chinese (government-owned) entity for a relatively modest sum. I suspect they'll still go under and be absorbed by the Chinese company or have anything of value stolen as the doors are closing.

It's true. I've been to China. Even in Beijing, the average person is clearly poor. Communal bathrooms for entire apartment blocs. Toilet / shower / wash room combinations in the more upper class places.

Go out in the country, and you may as well be in North Korea.

These people are using man power to plow fields, I don't think they're going to be a major market for the US any time soon.

There are, of course, a small group of incredibly wealthy people who are well connected to the Party and are allowed to own / run businesses, which are all state sponsored.

Everyone else is basically living like a slave producing shit for export while living off next to no money while the government and elites get rich.

313 So.

I really wish Trump would either do the tariffs or not do the tariffs.

I've got a potential $5k tariff bill over my head on something I ordered months ago thats on a boat right now from Israel.

If I have to pay that tariff, fine. But I'm gonna be mega super pissed if I have to pay that tariff and the next day Trump is like "lulz nevermind" and cancels them.

Do or do not. There is no try.

And before people say "just cancel your order and get something domestically". Would love to. Unfortunately This is the only fireplace on the market that will fit the space in my house due to it being on the 2nd floor and the area right above the fireplace being ... our master bedroom. Per building code, its the only fireplace that will work due to its smaller (but powered) vent pipe.

With economics I just roll with it and figure all will be well. In this case I trust Trump until I have reason not to.

One market downturn hurt us in distant the past, as I do remember my husband was not happy. The market usually responds eventually, or has. If he's not rewashing plastic ziplock bags I don't worry. Granted, there is nothing wrong with this, if any of you do. I simply don't.

My MIL did rewash plastic bags and it sort of grossed me out. I mean, they were washed until they fell apart, and she was well off but insane. Cullen S. Hendrix (PIIE), Date Dec. 18, 2024

It begins, "Conservative politics make for good music. The Nixon administration inspired anti-Vietnam war songs like “Fortunate Son” and “What’s Going On.” Ronald Reagan’s first term yielded “Born in the USA,” in which Bruce Springsteen smuggled social commentary on Vietnam and US industrial decline inside a hook so strong and anthemic that it has been serially misunderstood by reactionary politicians ever since. The first Trump administration elicited Childish Gambino’s “This is America.” And decades before all of this, Woodie Guthrie was wielding a six-string that killed fascists."

390 378 A lot of people hold 75% or more of their investments in stocks, especially when they're younger. Bonds and cash usually get more weighting the closer you are to retirement and can't afford as much risk.

20% loss is on the high side, but certainly possible especially if his stock picks were weighted heavily based on personal politics.

========

Mine is 90% stocks.

And I lost 1%.

I was hedged with Put Options on the QQQs. Everything lost in the stocks can picked up by the options.

This isn't rocket science. No one. I mean no one should lose 20% when the market goes down that much.

There is a corollary that actually makes sense of this. I had a professor in Arch school and during critique, he would admonish students who said things like, "I tried to connect the interior space with the exterior views..." His response was, "This is not try-atechture. What did you DO? You put a window in that wall to good effect. Now move on."

IOW, cut the crap.

Gonzalez is accused of carrying out a series of thefts at stores in Hall, Barrow, Gwinnett, Habersham, White, and Lumpkin counties.

I lost near 30% in 2008 because I had a lot of bank stocks, some I lost permanently, like the bank shut down and the stock went to zero permanent. It took 3 years to get it all back.

On the plus side, three years of tax writeoffs.

401 Tariffs on China are not very good because tariffs make prices higher and causes stuff to happen. When this stuff happens tariffs must be raised or lowered to make these effects become nullified.

When nullified tariffs are then bad but become good when lowered for the world markets or something.

Thus, I do not know if I supports tariffs for some countries and not others, so the playing field is equal to the point of being unequal to the world economies in the East but not Europe or the US

404 The only way to actually have lost 20% in this drop is to:

- have bought right at the top of the curve before the dip
- be 100% allocated in a general index ETF like SPY or whatever with no cash, no bonds or bond funds, no sector exposure, no nothing
- sell *everything* you have at the bottom of the dip yesterday

If that's how you invest, you should not be self-managing your investments.

When someone says they lost X% they don't usually mean realized losses, but rather what their unrealized gains were compared to what they currently are.

Venezuela: Plebes buy Black Market feminine hygiene products while Maria Gabriela, one of the daughters of Hugo Chavez, gets the spoiled jet-setting life even after his death.

Saying you will just try shows lack of confidence in your magic power, so stop that shit. Same as putting away the optical sight on the last shot at the Death Star. Trust the magic, trust yourself and quit whining.

408 Yeah, I'm not loving the cavalier announcements.

Trump's advantage when dealing with most foreign leaders is they actually believe CNN/MSNBC that he's crazy kookoo bananas and could do anything at any time, so they feel pressured into doing whatever they can to appease him.

Therefore I fully support him leaning into that.

Back when Trump took office the first time, the market bumped. I figured it would happen again so when he won in November, I tossed about $3k of my truck slush fund that I use to pay for parts that I don't want the wife to see into two S&P Index funds.

Yeah they're hurting right now - but my whole net worth isn't depending on it... just my ability to spend stupid money on stupid things for the big red Hummer.

418 I voted for Trump twice and supported him til now... This just makes him look like a complete buffoon.
The tariffs lasted all of 12 hours? How is that supposed to give you leverage when the world sees you surrender that quickly? Flip flopping on something they just dug their heels in on?

And this was only 2 days after they vehemently denied there would be any 90 day pause.
Understand that stocks have now completely erased their liberation day losses... Do you think that's rational?

The real takeaway here is that if there were ever a chance to finally pop the easy money bubble in stocks, this was it. They cringed at the first sign of market trouble and surrendered. It was that easy. Now we're back to outrageous valuations and nothing but aggressive speculation.
