In any event, do not want. Posted by: naturalfake at April 09, 2025 12:21 PM (iJfKG) It's not like he said "tomorrow", dude. This is the source of the irritation and anger. Make the point that being "below replacement" is hardly an emergency, and that a world with fewer people in it wouldn't be 100% evil and terrible and wrong, and people leap to the idea that you're in bed with the Davoisie and actively trying to do people in to get to some magic target number. I'm more personally annoyed by people who fetishize some meaningless "replacement" number and then use it as a lazy perch to be smug that other people dare not wish to live the exact same way that they do, than by someone who says that a smaller population due to natural population decay is not inherently evil. Elevated BP. Dr made me buy a BP monitor.
Posted by: Lithiated gp For Healthful Glow ===== I scarfed my father's bp monitor when he passed in 2003. What the hell, I'd had my share of angioplasties by then. My father's heart problems started in '85, so the monitor was probably bot shortly after that. Runs on two D size batteries. I'm still using it, just noticed fairly recently it still had the plastic film over the red led read outs. Faithfully weigh myself and take my blood pressure once a month. Really not for health reasons, those of us of certain inclinations just can not give up our spreadsheets. Posted by: From about That Time at April 09, 2025 12:30 PM (n4GiU) 102

Posted by: Warai-otoko ======== Population in history reflects societal, environmental (food and temperature primarily aside from natural disasters), and biological effects (diseases). What is true consistently though is if you raise the cost of creating families, then you will get less of them--fewer families, in turn, mean fewer kids. Like tariffs, you have a macro scale and a individual scale. As an individual, you may or may not benefit from the changes just like any other macro level event filtered down to the individual level. IDGAF about the rest of the world as long as its not made our problem in some way. For the USA, there isn't a magic number that is the right population, not having exactly replacement rates and a slow downward trend doesn't matter much, however a deep decline in birthrate is a problem that I think we have an interest in avoiding. I then dated a girl who worked at a Foot Locker across from my store. Ahh, memories. The mall was recently demolished and the owners were making some of the things from the building available. What dream? You're the one with a dream that population rates must never go down and everyone has to make new people whether they want to or not. I don't care either way.
When did I say that? My personal preference is to not have children. I have gotten there... by not having children. Posted by: Archimedes ========== Societies without a challenge and/or hope tend to euthanize themselves. Israel, despite the tenuous circumstances, has a relatively high birth rate. Part of that birth rate is purpose in life and future orientation of the population. An aging society, in part, can lack any ability or even desire to meet a challenge and so settles for decline and comfort. Sudden population shocks are kind of a special case such as the immediate aftermath of a plague, natural disaster like a volcano eruption that blankets the skies with ash affecting agriculture, or something like a meteor strike. The Black Death did not terminate Western European culture but rather invigorated it because labor became dear and more mobile leading to the breakdown of the serf culture in the West.
Posted by: whig at April 09, 2025 12:52 PM (ctrM5) There were quite a number of writers post-black death who were claiming the society was collapsing because the serfs would not stay on their estates, and would talk back when told what to do. How can one run a latifundia under such labor conditions? Free thinking like that leads to heresies like Wycliffe's Lollards, and we know what schismatics like that can get up to.
