Court Rejects Michael Mann's Request to Delay His Massive $530,000 Debt to National Review

Climate Jive Turkey Michael Mann sued National Review for ten years claiming they defamed him by questioning Doctor Hockey Stick's alleged "science." He lost. Not only did he lose, but he presented misleading claims to the court to jack up the damages he was seeking, and, due to this misrepresentation, was ordered to pay National Review's legal bills.

He's now boo-hoo whinin' and cryin' that he can't pay right now.

The court ordered him to pay up.

Court Delivers Massive Blow To Famed Climate Scientist Who Sued Critics

A Washington, D.C., court rejected University of Pennsylvania climate scientist Michael Mann's bid to postpone his required payment of hundreds of thousands of dollars to National Review on Thursday.

The Superior Court of the District of Columbia ruled in January that Mann owes National Review approximately $530,000 to cover the outlet's legal fees after spending more than a decade locked in defamation litigation against the organization, and Mann subsequently requested a stay to postpone the payments. On Thursday, the court denied Mann's request, meaning that he will likely have to pony up cash to an outlet he once described in emails as a "threat to our children."

Your wife's children, maybe.

...

In a filing opposing National Review's request for compensation, Mann argued that the move was a "mean-spirited and unjustified request by a powerful organization" intending to intimidate and silence him.

Notably, Judge Albert Irving wrote in March that Mann and his lawyers had presented misleading information to the jury while the defamation case was at trial. Specifically, Mann and his representation misled the jury as to how much grant funding he missed out on due to the actions of the defendants, a key element of his defamation case, with Irving describing the deception as "extraordinary in its scope, extent, and intent."

I'll tell you what's extraordinary -- getting cucked by the cucks at National Review. I don't know how that's even possible!

Michael Mann is the George Conway of Rosie Ruizes.

51 Ran across a Mark Steyn article in the London Spectator from 2003.

A couple of interesting quotes:

On 11 September 2001, I wrote that one of the casualties of the day’s events would be the Western alliance: ‘The US taxpayer’s willingness to pay for the defence of Canada and Europe has contributed to the decay of America’s so-called “allies”, freeing them to disband their armed forces, flirt with dictators and gangster states, and essentially convert themselves to semi-non-aligned.’ ‘The West’ was an obsolete concept, because, as I put it later that month, for everyone but America ‘the free world is mostly a free ride’.

It took twenty-four years, but Steyn's prediction is coming to pass.

The second quote is in the next comment.

60 The second Steyn quote from 2003:

Europe is dying. As I’ve pointed out here before, it can’t square rising welfare costs, a collapsed birthrate and a manpower dependent on the world’s least skilled, least assimilable immigrants. In 20 years’ time, as those Dutch Muslim teenagers are entering the voting booths, European countries, unlike parts of Nigeria, will not be living under Sharia, but they will be reaching their accommodations with their radicalised Islamic compatriots, who like many intolerant types are expert at exploiting the ‘tolerance’ of pluralist societies.

I'd say that Steyn accurately forecast the future, with Western European politicians participating in Iftar dinners and celebrating the glories of Ramadan.

Unfortunately, Mann has refused to release the raw data he allegedly used for the hockey stick. Don't think that came out in the case either.

Steyn got it for a) being associated with Rush Limbaugh show which is anathema to DC residents, and from memory, b) he compared Mann at Penn State to Jerry Sandusky. Rand Simberg did the same which Steyn repeated and only got $1000 damages for that comment for defamation.

Jury did not like Steyn is the apparent difference in the case regarding the ridiculous punitive damage differences between him and Simberg for the same alleged offense.

However, the court used bullshit claims, regarding the "damage" he did to the families of the victims, and then went after him in the worst possible way, giving him no legal angles to defend himself against the stupid claims of damage.

They did what they did, and didn't hide they were doing it, to discourage anyone else from making any use of the airwaves to assert narratives they don't like.

Yea... this predictive spellcheck that somehow has infected my browser is giving me fits. I know what I type, but it gets changed and I don't look.

Anyway, the "ecology" topic was something I got indoctrinated by in junior high. Whole months were dedicated to pollution, saving the erf, the coming ice age, heat wave, rising oceans, evaporating oceans, acid rain, etc.

It didn't help that my mom was all in on it. At least for a while. I think after a couple years she sort of figured out it was horseshit. But we did pick up our trash...

That is why I used the air quotes around conservative. NR masked its decline by climbing aboard GWB's idiocy train in the 00's. But, they actually had conservative writers at one time--O'Sullivan, Sobran, Buchanan, Florence King, Derbyshire, that were cut loose or retired one by one.

What was left was corporatist "Invade the World, Invite the World" types that despised common folks. Kevin Williamson is a posterboy for such.

Not really. Ed Whelan had his own cronies that he wanted as an alternative including John Roberts. Regarding the war on terror, none of them suggested keeping Muslims out of the country and closing the borders other than Ann Coulter who they fired because of it.

From wiki
"In 2001, as a contributing editor and syndicated columnist for National Review Online (NRO), Coulter was asked by editors to make changes to a piece written after the September 11 attacks. On the show Politically Incorrect, Coulter accused NRO of censorship and said she was paid $5 per article. NRO dropped her column and terminated her editorship. Jonah Goldberg, the editor-at-large of NRO, said: "We did not 'fire' Ann for what she wrote... we ended the relationship because she behaved with a total lack of professionalism, friendship, and loyalty [concerning the editing disagreement]."

GSG had a fund for Kyle Rittenhouse as well, so I'm not really against what they're doing, but the fund states 'self-defense' and 'innocent, churchgoing, loving child' as the defense.

Um, no. It's premeditated murder.

I will file it under "a fool and his money are soon parted" for those donating and when the family blows it on cars, gambling and weed.

Steyn "lost" in a forum-shopped jury trial where the jury no doubt had little idea what the trial was about and probably saw the case as Democrat vs. Republican. Even one judge (bear in mind this court usually handles traffic and landlord/tenant law) said "all this paper work gives me a headache!", so the judges were similarly awful.

The punitive award in DC was reduced to $5,000 but even that is being appealed. This travesty of justice will someday be reversed, I pray.

Mann did sue in the other case (in B.C.) STG mentioned, and was assessed costs, which he never paid.

It is a religion, and not a very good one, at that. In the 19th century, odd little Protestant sects in the US started predicting the end of time. Every time that date passed, they got a new revelation. Eventually they stopped doing it, because people used to have shame. These experts have the religious fervor, but no shame to go with it.

I was on a tourist cruise on San Francisco Bay a couple years ago, and the narrator was opining that the entire wharf area needed to be replaced because of the rising tides. The hockey stick was disproven by a Canadian statistician - Stephen McIntyre. McIntyre argued that Mann's algorithm created a hockey stick shape regardless of the data entered, causing McIntyre to comment that he would expect better of undergrad stats majors that what Mann, as a research scientist, had done.

Mann has always resisted being deposed because McIntyre's findings would be proven out. I don't believe McIntyre was ever sued - because it would have forced Mann to defend the hockey stick. Mann had a history of delaying proceedings, to avoid depositions and having to pay out lawyer fees because of that. A case against Tim Ball and a Canadian Organization (FCPP) had that ending, and I believe another one involvein Ezra Levant.

Every time that date passed, they got a new revelation. Eventually they stopped doing it, because people used to have shame. These experts have the religious fervor, but no shame to go with it.

China is holding gold, they are also a major arbitrage center, they were paying higher than London. The general thought is that China, like Russia, is trying to position themselves free of the USD, and that if you have a lot of gold you can float a gold backed bearer bond that has greater credibility than US Treasuries or Euros.
This may be one of the reason Trump is floating that Sovereign Wealth Fund idea, since the promise of gold may be a bigger asset than promises of future repayment based on fiat currency and the United States' population's ability to repay the government's debt.

375 Now throw in the political issue -- what the hell good is it to cut Western carbon and offshore it all to China? How does it help to move it around?

Definitely not a Jonah G-File fan (and not as much Ann's, either), but there is something to be said about a subset of people in the conservative movement of, say, the 90s and Oughts that just didn't play well with others. Steyn, for instance, has been absolutely everywhere - even as a sub for Rush (the best one, IMO). Did they see something that the population at-large didn't see, or was it something else?

84 does Mann own a house?

Posted by: Kindltot - eight furry chickens in white wine at April 08, 2025 02:50 PM (D7oie)

The father of his wife's children owns a house, Mann just sleeps on the sofa in the basement

Posted by: hurricane567 at April 08, 2025 04:53 PM (OdN1q)

381 I mean, sure $535,000 is a lot of money. Then again you knowingly lied to the court to win the case, so....?

Posted by: El Mariachi at April 08, 2025 04:53 PM (D1vbu)

382 That's not what happened. National Review managed to get themselves removed from the case, claiming Mark Steyn wasn't working for them or something.

Then they collected from Mann under DC SLAPP law, a law meant to try and discourage lawsuits that threaten free speech.

What you described is what Mann did with his case against Mark Steyn, who because it was a DC jury, found for Mann because Mann told them Steyn guest hosts for Rush Limbaugh.
Steyn will collect some money from Mann for his false information presented in court about lost grant money, but nowhere near what Steyn paid for lawyers.

383 “You have to be able to drop everything in 30 seconds when you feel the heat around the corner.” -the other Michael Mann…

…which applies to this Michael Mann

Posted by: Lex at April 08, 2025 05:19 PM (MYYw0)

384 The irony of this is Mann's legal strategy was to disclose as little as possible while stretching the legal process out endlessly, in order to bankrupt Steyn and NR. Process is the punishment. (It succeeded with Steyn, who I think was representing himself?)

So now Mann wants - again - to draw out the process. He'll never pay, and will force Steyn and NR to pay more lawyers to chase the settlement.

Mann is a classic scumbag. Not just as a "scientist" but as a basic human being.
