Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Morning Report — 4/ 8 /25![]() Those who have followed President Trump’s messaging since 2015 know this has been his goal from the start. Even in his first term, when he implemented specific tariffs targeted at China and the steel and aluminum industries, the tariffs proved effective. He has consistently advocated for them to become a permanent policy that would only benefit the United States. Fair share and America First protectionist positions have long been central to Trump’s vision of world trade, and the "free trade" policies that the United States was propping up under Biden and his WEF cronies were insufficient. Trade cannot be free without being fair, so the perception that America should willingly participate in laissez-faire economics while being run over by the rest of the world is precisely why President Trump has initiated this change in our role. Protectionism gets a bad rap from conservatives who have been told that Reaganomics is the only way to think about economics. Still, that approach has led to nothing besides the elites of the world trampling over the American workers. Corporations, Wall Street, and countries like communist China can be protected through the abuse of "free trade," or the American people and their families’ futures can be defended against the rest of the world through tariffs. Above and beyond economics, foreign policy, of which the former is certainly a key component of the latter, made news as Israel's PM Benjamin Netanyahu paid a visit to the White House. And then came this rather surprising announcement from President Trump. The United States and Iran will hold direct discussions on Tehran's contested nuclear weapons program this weekend, President Donald Trump announced on Monday, just hours after the Islamic Republic affirmed that one-on-one negotiations with America remain off limits. If the talks fail, "Iran is going to be in great danger," Trump said. The surprise announcement came during a Monday afternoon press conference in the Oval Office with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is in town to discuss Iran’s nuclear program and ongoing efforts to free the hostages still being held by Hamas, Tehran’s top terror proxy. . . Trump expressed optimism that a diplomatic deal can be reached with the hardline regime but said negotiations will not continue indefinitely and that military options remain on the table. "I think everybody agrees that doing a deal would be preferable to doing the obvious, and the obvious is not something that I want to be involved with, or, frankly, that Israel wants to be involved with, if they can avoid it," Trump said while sitting beside the Israeli leader. "So we're going to see if we can avoid it, but it's getting to be very dangerous territory." "I think if the talks aren't successful with Iran," Trump added, "I think Iran is going to be in great danger." Earlier in the day, Iran’s foreign ministry confirmed that it had responded to a March letter from Trump requesting diplomatic talks. In that response, Tehran submitted an "offer to begin indirect talks," according to foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei. An Iranian official told Reuters on Monday morning that "indirect talks offer a chance to evaluate Washington's seriousness about a political solution with Iran." In separate comments, Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian said his country is "looking for negotiations" but would not enter them directly "at any cost." The Americans, he said, "must also prove that they are looking for negotiations."While "Jaw-Jaw" is preferable to "War-War" what is there to discuss with mad Mullahs. There is no parlaying with people who view Armageddon as a desirable and necessary thing in order to achieve their supposed Islamic paradise on earth. Beyond their support and likely being the force behind the October 7 invasion into Israel fromGaza, as well as waging a global terror campaign against us, our allies in the west and Israel in general for nearly 50 years, these maniacs are a nether hair's breadth from having atomic weapons and the missiles to carry them. That we can thank Obama and Biden and the billions of dollars we gave them. There must be regime change in Tehran, and that can be achieved without direct military action on our part by the reimposition of sanctions and the open support for the people who in large part are sick and tired of the theocracy. I would hope this nonsense from Trump about "negotiations" is merely for the cameras. But what's the purpose. Would it not be better to vocally declare regime change and a free Iran a goal we should get behind. "Dangerous territory" indeed Mr. President. On a more upbeat note, despite the darkness, a light still shines. To memorialize the brief but beautiful life of Israeli toddler Ariel Bibas, whom Hamas jihadis horrifically murdered along with his mother and baby brother Kfir, the Jerusalem fritillary butterfly has a new name. Hamas jihadis kidnapped the whole Bibas family from their kibbutz on Oct. 7, 2023, subsequently killed mother Shiri and her two sons brutally, and gleefully informed father Yarden of their murder. Hordes of Palestinians joyfully cheered the coffins of the babies. Yarden returned as the family’s only survivor, but the Hebrew Language Academy wants to immortalize little Ariel’s memory. The state of Israel posted on X April 4, “A butterfly now carries his name. The Hebrew Language Academy @HebAcademy has renamed the Jerusalem fritillary butterfly (Melitaea ornata) the Ariel fritillary, in memory of five-year-old Ariel Bibas—murdered in Hamas captivity along with his mother, Shiri, and baby brother . . . Israel added, “In a letter to Ariel’s father, Yarden Bibas, the Academy wrote: ‘Of all our country’s orange butterflies, this one should carry Ariel’s name. May it be a small comfort to you and an everlasting tribute to those lost in this tragic war.’” Little Ariel had bright red hair, and the group Stand With Us said he loved butterflies. At the end of the day, the evil barbarians who snuffed out Ariel and who still hold hostages are agents of Iran, Mr. President. And as you can see, that same evil lurks not far beneath the surface of an alarming percentage of our fellow citizens right here, in their mad desires for absolute power and control. And lastly, a quick shout-out and thank you for your continued support in hitting our tip jar. It truly is appreciated more than you can know.

Importing more than you export is a sign that you are spending more than you are earning, i.e. that you are borrowing to pay the bills.
Think of it in terms of a single household. You earn $60k/yr, which means you make $60k worth of goods and services and ship them out to the world. You then go down to the shops and spend $70k/yr. You import $70k worth of goods and services from the rest of the world. How? You must be borrowing the money, putting $10k/yr on the credit card. Now, if you've got a good, secure job and plenty of assets to secure the loan against, you can do that for a while. In the long run, you run out of credit. But while it's going on, you've got $10k/yr more goods coming in to your household than going out. America runs a trade deficit because it spends more than it earns internationally, and borrows the difference. The government spends $1.5 trillion more than it earns, and borrows the money to do so, some of it internationally. That's an inward flow of dollars from abroad, which is balanced by Americans buying more foreign goods than they sell. If they didn't, all the money would pile up in America, tilting the exchange rate to make foreign goods even cheaper. Posted by: NiV at April 08, 2025 07:40 AM (Z6rXo) 10

One of the problems with supporting the resistance in Iran is that the f*cking CIA and the State Department are retards. They don't understand Iran, and they usually suggest supporting the wrong people.

This is...an unwise move, America. Israel cut tariffs to zero, as asked, and still faces a huge 17% tariff. Because it's not really a "reciprocal tariff." That's a stupid lie. It's a punishment for our trade deficit. But here's the thing, America. We literally can't prevent that trade deficit. We consume a LOT of American goods. But lots of that consumption - McDonald's and Coca-Cola, for example - is via local subsidiaries established here by those companies. It doesn't count in the "import" side of the ledger. And Israel is a tech-heavy exporter. You keep buying our tech (and our tech companies) for vast sums while our population is just too small to buy as much from you. In other words, our trade deficit is a function of how valuable you find our tech, of our usefulness to the American economy, and especially the tech and defense industries. Long story short, you're punishing us for things we can't control - and for the very things you find most valuable about us. And there's nothing we can do to change it. I'll put it bluntly, as a genuine lover of America: This is screw-balls. This is not a policy. This doesn't incentivize favorable trade with you. This is telling the world you're not trying to make sense or seriously pursuing your own interests. You're just raging. Our products are good enough to be desirable everywhere. Even our enemies want them. If you decide, for no reason any American official can currently explain, that we can no longer sell them to you, we will still find buyers. So help me out, Americans. What the hell is going on here? We're small, you won't notice if our trade goes elsewhere. But you're doing this to everyone. If you didn't do your homework on us, what are the chances you've done your homework on anyone else? How is this blind rage going to end well for ordinary Americans? And at the same time you can listen to politicians and MSM talkers say things like "Does the president think that Americans want to work in factories?", while normal people know our wages and outcomes aren't better than they were back in solid job / factory days, and our debt (especially useless debt like women getting pointless biology or sociology degrees just because "you've got to go to college") has skyrocketed. Would it not be better to vocally declare regime change and a free Iran a goal we should get behind.
The devil is in a details. As a nation, we supported regime change in Afghanistan and Iraq and pushed for them to become "free" - where free translates as obedience to globohomo and all that they represent. The fact that Trump isn't of that ilk doesn't shield us from the next President, or the one after that. Protests notwithstanding, I don't know that the people of Iran WANT to be free and, unless it's their goal, it's a recipe for failure. I want Iran to be peaceful. Zero-for-Zero tariffs from the EU is great start but that’s just the start of the problem.
The rest of it relates to all the non-tariff barriers the Europeans deploy to either inhibit American companies from selling products or services there to the constant regulatory and statutory fees, fines, and other monetary penalties the EU levels against our corporations on a regular basis. That’s going to be a real knock-down, drag-out. Then we hit the biggest stumbling block with the EU; agricultural tariffs, subsidies, and regulations. Catholic Bishops ending refugee work with federal government The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) says they will not renew 50-year-old agreements with the federal government to provide children's services and refugee support. In just over 3 weeks an ODA with one. Northern Alliance element rolled up the Taliban and took Mazar Al Sharif. Inside of six months we had the whole thing pretty rolled up.
In Iraq, in about three weeks from go, we were eating food out of Saddam’s fridge. Certain elements advised very strongly that we keep most of the military in place and give the Baathists a seat at the table. Then the DoS got involved, politics took over and the men on the ground paid the price. Never, ever underestimate the ability of the DoS to fuck things up. There are also some very good people in the agency. But there are also some careerists who have teamed up with DoS to override those who are wiser. Think long and hard before we get involved in Iran. I don’t care who is in charge because a lot of the same people are still doing the leg work. Posted by: Marcus T at April 08, 2025 08:26 AM (mMbvc) 96

Is there something Israel makes that we can't ourselves?
Posted by: fd at April 08, 2025 07:51 AM (vFG9F) There's a fairly important distinction between can't and don't. I suspect, admitted completely without evidence at this point, that Trump's initial tariffs are designed to get people to come talk. And it's working. During the talks they can hammer out agreements on specifics. I've heard it suggested that Trump wants a 10% baseline tariff and thinks other countries should do the same - at least partially to offset the regulatory and inspection burden associated with international trade. Trump has also said, previously, that he's not in favor of tariffs on things we cannot make in the US. For things which could be made in the US but aren't, there are lots of different options... for example, you could have a tariff designed to get some companies to on-shore with the understanding that it'll drop by some amount in the future as certain goal are met. I assume that, in the long run, the goal is for each country to have tariff regime designed specifically for them but you can't start from that point. The weird thing is, I don't think Trump is even particularly protectionist. I think his end goal is to come as close as possible to zeroing out tariffs over the medium term.
I think I'm a bit more protectionist than him. If it were me dragging these countries to the bargaining table, I'd probably withdraw from many if not all of our multilateral trade agreements. Then I'd tell the first world economies from Japan to the UK, "look, free trade kicks ass and we're ready to go zero tariff if you are. Let's hammer out bilateral agreements and make some money!" And I'd tolerate some degree of non-reciprocal tariffs from the undeveloped third-world economies that are trying to crawl out of the bronze age, because I'm not a total asshole. So I'd hammer out more bilateral agreements with them, clearly defining how much we're willing to tolerate. But the industrialized third-world countries? I'd hammer them. I'd tell countries like China and Brazil and Vietnam "it's not just about tariffs. I plan to drastically cut regulation and tax rates, but until you bring yours up to meet ours, we're hitting you with a baseline tariff of X%. Stop undercutting us with slave labor and dirty industry. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at April 08, 2025 08:46 AM (BI5O2) 139
The take aways from SCOTUS smacking Boasburg down are:
1. The Enemy Aliens can appeal their arrest where they are arrested. That Habeas thing. Which limits the judge shopping. 2. All the government has to prove at such a hearing is the person in question meets requirements - member of the TdA, be over 14 years of age, and be in the US illegally. 3. The TROs can be appealed. Now to run Boasburg out of office. Or have Congress simply defund the DC Circuit because Congress created this inferior court. Posted by: Anna Puma at April 08, 2025 08:46 AM (cUqk2) 140

I broke with orthodox free trade doctrine long ago and became a mercantilist. America first, baby!
Pure free trade says I should be a Nietzchean monad and always buy cheap for my own benefit, fuck my American neighbor. But when my American neighbor doesn't have a job, I wind up paying in all sorts of ways. We've implemented policies over the years that have hollowed out our industrial base with adverse consequences for huge swathes of Americans. It's like upstate versus downstate New York writ large. Inflation adjusted wages for our working class have been flat for over 50 years, while everyone else has gained. C-suite executives especially. Things you don't learn in microeconomics. The poster child for this is GE's Jack Welch, who led the charge to outsource. Hey Jack, you want to save a dime on making a light bulb, build your own navy. In 2024, the United States had a trade deficit with Canada of approximately $100 billion. That represents an outflow of wealth from America which translates into lower GDP, employment, and tax revenue. It is in the interests of the USA to eliminate trade deficits with all countries. Jene Sais-quoi @JustAGurLnSwedn Mar 29 Total Canadian exports to the USA: $412.7 billion USD U.S. population: 345 million Per capita value = $412.7 billion ÷ 345 million = approximately $1,196 USD per person Total U.S. exports to Canada: $348.41 billion Canada’s population: 41.3 million Per capita value = $348.41 billion ÷ 41.3 million = approximately $8,435 per person Canadians purchased about $8,435 in goods per capita last year, from the USA Americans purchased about $1,196 USD in goods per capita last year, from Canada --- Remove just the crude oil from US-Can trade that has a 30% DISCOUNT off of world prices and Canada has a trade surplus with the US. "Trump’s own statements have been inconsistent—earlier claims pegged the "subsidy" at $100 million, then $100 billion, before settling on $200 billion. This escalation, without evidence, suggests he’s picking round numbers for rhetorical impact rather than relying on data. Economists and fact-checkers widely agree: a trade deficit isn’t a subsidy, and no credible breakdown supports $200 billion in annual U.S. support to Canada." An economic boom never seen before in history. It's not just the trillion dollars or so they directly collect. It's the trillion dollars or more spent by Americans to comply by filing. It's nothing to do with bad trade deals. It's because you're spending more than you earn, and borrowing to pay the difference. It's a symptom of the Federal deficit, not trade policy. Canada's rushing to drop them because that's what Trump is demanding, not because it's the cause of the problem. It's good that they are, and Trump's achievement if he can bring about global free trade will be monumental and globally beneficial! Free trade is good, tariffs are bad, and everybody should drop them. But it's only good if he takes the deal and drops the tariffs when everyone else does. If he sticks to the trade deficit argument, it'll mess up the world until you get your budget balanced. Posted by: NiV at April 08, 2025 09:02 AM (Z6rXo) 204

The Vigilant Fox 🦊 @VigilantFox NEW: Bill Maher just conceded what most of the media still won’t say—Trump is one of the most effective politicians of our time. And this wasn’t a throwaway line. Maher meant it. “Trump is one of the most effective politicians,” Maher told Chris Cuomo. “Whatever you think of the policy and him as a person… just as a politician.” What won Maher over? Raw authenticity and moments no one else in politics can pull off. Maher continued: “People are not savvy about issues, but they smell a phony a mile away… and that kind of shit, nobody else does it.” Then he dropped two jaw-dropping examples where—even as a self-professed Trump critic—he had to give the man credit. The first: “When he did that thing where the guy came in from the Taliban and he said, ‘This is an aerial picture of your house. If during our withdrawal, one American is hurt, just know I know where you live.’” “I was like, oh can we just play the music now? Most of the gang members won't get a hearing but many asylum seekers will and it has nothing to do with what the courts just decided. Posted by: JackStraw at April 08, 2025 09:05 AM (LkLld) 213
Posted by: Anna Puma at April 08, 2025 08 Works for me IF they stay in jail until the habeas hearing. And then Hire a bunch of habeas judges and provide them with a large "denied" stamp. Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) announced he will expand his hold on Trump’s nominations for government positions to an additional 50 names, blocking a total of 300 nominees.
Republican Tommy Tuberville blocked some of Biden's nominations like that. They hardly have a reason to whine about the same tactics being used by the Democrats now. The audacity of Schatz. He voted to give the Mango Mussolini almost unlimited power and now he wants to resist him? Where was this a couple months ago? He's one of the 10 Dems to follow Schumer into ignominy...and rumor is he's thinking of Senate leadership positions?!?! Glad there are some Dems aggressively addressing Trump's tyrannical manipulation of our Constitution. At some point I would like to see an accusation against Trump for attacking our country and constitution from within. Attacking and undermining our Constitution and overturning our government does not have to be with guns, he's doing it by manipulation, deception and dismissal. He should be impeached as a traitor. > "You're oversimplifying a very complex issues. Again, are you denying that many foreign countries have crushing tariffs on US products and in some cases flat out bans?"
Yes. And it's bad (it mainly hurts the Canadian consumers with higher prices). But it's not the cause of the trade deficit. That's the US policy of spending more than it earns. Think of the country as a single household. You work to produce goods and services for $60k salary, that's your export to the rest of the world, and then you go to the shops and pay $70k, that's what you import from the rest of the world, and you put the $10k difference on your credit card. The trade deficit is your financial deficit. If the government spends $1.8 trillion a year more than it earns, the money has to go somewhere. If foreigners loan you some of that money, it has to balance in trade, or the exchange rate goes screwy. It's not trade policy. It's spending more than you earn, and borrowing from foreigners to cover the difference. Stop doing that. Posted by: NiV at April 08, 2025 09:22 AM (Z6rXo) 270
An just to expound on why these tariffs suck in my case - I didn't WANT to buy a fireplace from Israel. Believe me, when I saw the sticker price of it I lost consciousness for a second.
But it was literally the *only* fireplace on the market that conformed to our situation where the confines of the existing structure (the "thickness" of the ceiling between our 2nd and 3rd floor) limited our options by building code. We had to have a vent that ran horizontally through this ceiling but it can't come within 1" of a combustible material - aka wood. All of the double-sided fireplaces have a 12" exhaust. The joists themselves are 12". The Ortal on the other hand has a 5" exhaust because it is a "power vent" - which means it has a fan inside the exhaust pipe that allows it to have a more narrow pipe. It's the only one. So we're screwed into buying it. From Israel. Posted by: Defenestratus at April 08, 2025 09:23 AM (WYStd) 271

What governs US-Canada trade relations? The USMCA. Who demanded and dictated the terms of the USMCA? Donald Trump. What did he say on the day it entered into force? ‘The USMCA is the fairest, most balanced, and beneficial trade agreement we have ever signed into law. It’s the best agreement we’ve ever made.’ I keep being told by MAGA enthusiasts here that Canada is responsible for the row because of its dairy duties. In fact, the value of US dairy exports to Canada is more than three times the reverse, there are more cows in Wisconsin alone than in all Canada and, in any case the tariffs have not been triggered, because US exporters have not exceeded the tariff-free quota they are granted under the terms of the USMCA. Big Balls did nothing wrong @philfinfan Are Canadian tariffs on US dairy fair? Jesus's Flunky @CrucifiedAgape US farmers produce more milk that domestic markets can handle. That's why in PA, it's price controlled. At least it used to be. I'm sure @PAGOP will eliminate this Socialist policy if dairy farmers don't pay homage to King @POTUS and start to get uppity.
