Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Monday Overnight Open Thread - April 7, 2025 [Doof]![]() Why National Beer Day? From Wikipedia National Beer Day is celebrated in the United States every year on April 7, marking the day that the Cullen–Harrison Act came into force after having been signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on March 22, 1933. April 6, the day before, is known as New Beer's Eve. The 18th Amendment was later repealed by the ratification of the 21st Amendment on December 5 that year, officially ending Prohibition. ![]() National Beer Day isn’t random, it marks FDR’s economic gamble The United States celebrates National Beer Day on Monday. While you may think this is just another arbitrarily made-up holiday, April 7 commemorates one of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s earliest and most successful New Deal policies combating the Great Depression of the 1930s. Roosevelt promised “bold, persistent experimentation” and he followed through on that pledge. Shortly after his inauguration, Roosevelt asked Congress to declare beer nonintoxicating. Yes, that’s right. For the prior 13 years, the 18th Amendment prohibited the production and sale of “intoxicating liquors,” which Congress defined as anything above 0.5% alcohol by volume. Roosevelt’s rationale for legalizing beer wasn’t to let depressed citizens drown their sorrows. Rather, with 14 million people out of work, he hoped that beer’s return would create jobs tied to its production, distribution, service, and consumption. Congress took quick action and set 12:01 a.m. April 7, 1933, as the moment that beer up to 4% by volume, which is in the vicinity of most light beers today, would be permitted. April 7 was like Mardi Gras, the Fourth of July and 10 New Year’s Eves rolled into one. In Chicago, the sounds of whistles, bells, horns, and other noisemaking devices commenced at the “beero hour,” and they continued to fill the Loop deep into the morning. The line at the bar of Berghoff’s German Restaurant was consistently eight deep — dimes were passed forward while steins were passed back. Further north, every one of Milwaukee’s taverns, tap rooms, bars, and cafes overflowed to the curb as people climbed onto parked cars and serenaded one another with drinking songs.More at the link Even bears celebrate National Beer Day ![]() Finally - this is how your humble host celebrated National Beer Day. A 26-year-old Chinese programmer who got a vigorous neck massage to relieve pain narrowly avoided permanent paralysis after suffering a stroke. Xiao Zhang (pseudonym), a young IT professional from Changsha, China’s Hunan Province, often suffered from neck pain due to spending many hours at his desk. After learning that traditional massage could help relieve neck pain, he decided to try it out at a local massage parlor. Everything was going great until he felt a sharp pain in his neck during a more vigorous maneuver by the massage therapist, which was shortly followed by a strong headache. He didn’t think too much of these symptoms, but the very next morning, he woke up with numbness and weakness of the left side of his body, as well as slurred speech. Scared, the 26-year-old rushed to the Second People’s Hospital of Hunan Province, where he was diagnosed with a secondary cerebral infarction. A head magnetic resonance imaging and cerebral angiography showed that Xiao Zhang had suffered a “right carotid artery dissection and secondary cerebral infarction.” Luckily for the young patient, he arrived at the hospital soon enough to prevent permanent damage. Employing comprehensive treatments such as anticoagulation therapy, improvement of collateral circulation, and the clearing of oxygen free radicals, doctors managed to mitigate the damage, and Zhang is now on his way to a full recovery. “The carotid artery is an important blood vessel that supplies blood to the brain. When the intima of the blood vessel wall is torn, blood seeps into the blood vessel wall to form a “dissection”, which can cause stenosis or even occlusion of the blood vessels, leading to insufficient blood supply to the brain and eventually developing into cerebral infarction,” Dr. Liu Yan from the hospital’s Department of Neurology explained. “In addition, the blood vessels in the neck are superficial, and improper external force compression (such as vigorous massage, sudden head turning, “twisting the neck”, etc.) may directly damage the blood vessels.”

Suppose the govt arrests you as enemy alien invader and is about to throw you out of the country. You are not. You are a natural born citizen.
The govt due process requires the govt prove you are such an alien under the AEA. That is all the due process and habeas corpus is about. >> Are those filing suit claim that any of the deportees aren't aliens?
The claim was they are not "alien enemies" under the AEA, and stuff like that. The Wise Latina went on about some poor thing who got tattoos that he 'thought were cool" being used to identify him. So they aren't claiming they are not illegal aliens, just that they ain't alien enemies under the law. This decision made clear that the AEA is not under judicial review. That is no court can start ruling on questions like that. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at April 07, 2025 10:27 PM (w6EFb) 91

Yep, as I understand it. Getting habeas will be a high bar, especially when you have to go to the district court where some alien is being detained. Watching older shows, even in the 80s, the actresses weren't all knock outs - usually there was a "hot one". Going into the 90s that did change and often they were all hot ones. Think of Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Baywatch. But back in those older shows the actresses weren't there BECAUSE they were ugly, and I think that is the difference we are seeing now. We're bringing back the Dire wolf for the same reason we climb Everest, fly to the moon, etc: Men rule these spaces. Any challenge, however useless, must be met. Read further, and you find the Dire wolf went extinct because it fed on woolly mammoths and Ice Age bison, which went extinct first, thus starving out the Dire wolf. This leaves Dire Wolf 2.0 doomed to domesticity and confinement, because they'll go extinct all over again unless they're allowed out in some place where they can kill very large prey, like -- elephants? Who would import wolves into Africa so they can kill elephants? Nevertheless, I can see the point of doing it as a proof of concept for future programs that might have real-world uses, but assuming the survival profile of the Dire Wolf is accurate, I don't see any justification for continuing the activity on this particular species. Had a pain in the ribs that I could tell was not really in the rib. Went to a chiropractor who said it was a nerve pinched because the nth thoracic vertebrae was out of whack. He twisted and turned my skeleton, and, by golly, the pain went away. However, the pain returned not long after, and I went to him again, but that was the last time. I saw why folks say you have to keep going back.
Later, MiladyJo's sister, a top-notch nurse, suggested she go to a NUCCA chiropractor - upper cervical adjustment only. She went to this one fellow, who would adjust her neck, but things just seemed to get worse. Then we figured out this fellow was trained in NUCCA, but Christ showed him a better way ahem yeah. We tracked down a real NUCCA doc, top guy in the world, right there in Tulsa. She got adjusted, and her regular terrible migraines she'd had since puberty WENT AWAY FOR GOOD. In the late '70s, after a car wreck, I went to a doc for a full check-up. Everything was fine. The doc laid me on a table, checked my legs, and said, well, you're a half-inch taller on this side than that. It has nothing to do with the car wreck. You've probably been like this since childhood. (The differing wear on my shoe heels suddenly made sense.) He told me I should wear a shoe insert #something but I never did. Years later, I went to the NCCA chiro that had adjusted Milady so successfully. He laid me on a table, checked my legs, and said, well, you're a half-inch taller on this side than that. We can fix that! And by the time I left his office, he had. Felt at first like I was leaning to one side. Several other symptoms I'd been suffering all disappeared. Took a couple of visits for the adjustment to "hold," but it did, finally, from then on. NUCCA is a gentle push on the "atlas" bone, that floating vertebrae that holds up the head. Slightly off, and bone presses on that primary nerve going from the brain to the rest of the bod, with all kinds of consequences. Such a gentle adjustment, I thought he hadn't even really done anything. Changed my life. Fin Posted by: mindful webworker - sticking my neck out at April 08, 2025 12:05 AM (qzYav) 310

Posted by: Debby Doberman Schultz ============= Sorry I missed you, Debby! (maybe you're still reading). I've been in other tabs, doing homework. Hence bored. Apprently you can't use 'Beef Stew' as a password. It's not stroganoff enough. Posted by: Ciampino ============ The Morons will be in their bunks, stroganoff. Posted by: Blonde Morticia at April 08, 2025 02:10 AM (3izae) Posted by: Nightwatch at April 08, 2025 02:10 AM (25kuG) 424
I prefer the password Cioppino...much more wine is drunk and the food with fresh sourdough bread is LIFE!!!

Kinda hanging in. I've actually got a schedule for tomorrow. Not much of one, but a schedule nonetheless.

I have stuff to do later also, but not until afternoon.

I don't have a time frame other than the pharmacy opens at 10. I just don't do well in the afternoons anymore. I like to home by 1 because there's a nap coming due.

Sometime in the next couple of days, I will have to go to the Pentagon. The parking pass that I put in for months ago, is ready to be picked up. My commute to work is divided up between the subway on weekdays and driving on weekends. So, I'll need that parking pass even though I only drive on Fri-Sat nights. Dumb but it's the fussy bureaucrat's world, I just work in it.

"fresh, fresh, fresh" on the beer glasses:
I just ran into this pome elsewhere: The trees are coming into leaf Like something almost being said; The recent buds relax and spread, Their greenness is a kind of grief. Is it that they are born again And we grow old? No, they die too, Their yearly trick of looking new Is written down in rings of grain. Yet still the unresting castles thresh In full-grown thickness every May. Last year is dead, they seem to say, Begin afresh, afresh, afresh. --Larkin Posted by: m at April 08, 2025 03:45 AM (CQE5S) 445
So is that an F 35 or a harrier?
Posted by: Boss Moss ---- Su-27 Posted by: Anna Puma -------- Nope. It's a Chinese J-15. Derived from an SU-27. The distinguishing thing is the little singlets in front of the wing. Not that anybody will see this anyway :-) Posted by: buddhaha at April 08, 2025 04:20 AM (KCiB8) Posted by: buddhaha at April 08, 2025 04:22 AM (KCiB8) 447
