The Morning Report — 4/ 7 /25

CarvilleCollab.jpg

Good morning kids. Of course the leading story is the aftermath and reactions to President Trump's tariff regime announcement last week. Of course. Despite the doom casting and politicization from the usual sources, already 50 countries are crying Uncle Sam and want to negotiate with Trump and team. There are other potentially massive benefits if this is given the chance it deserves to work.

Trump’s economic team has subtly suggested the impact of the import duties could extend to increasing foreign direct investment in American industries, incentivize a shift in economic investment away from market speculation and into industries focused on producing tangible value, and put downward pressure on interest rates by lowering the 10-Year Treasury Bond yield. The myriad economic objectives the Trump White House hopes to achieve through its tariff policy are ambitious, to say the least. However, if the policy succeeds, President Trump will have fundamentally moved the United States into a position to dominate the global economy for the foreseeable future. . .

One of the more important secondary policy goals that the Trump White House likely hopes to achieve is a reduction in the 10-year Treasury Bond yield. While most people focus on the Federal Reserve Bank and its interest rate policy, the yield of long-term government bonds impacts interest rates on types of debt held for longer durations, including mortgages, credit cards, and, most importantly, government debt. The tariffs are anticipated to push the 10-Year Treasury Bond yield lower, meaning the cost of the federal government’s payments servicing the national debt will be reduced. Notably, the inflationary cycle that set in under the Biden government—and was exacerbated by former President Joe Biden’s reckless spending policies—caused the cost to service the debt to increase dramatically and made it difficult for the government to take on any new debt.

I don't know the exact figure, but the amount of money from the budget each year that goes to just the serving of internets payments on the debt and not the debt itself is insane. And the total debt now stands at 36 Trillion dollars. Regardless of who was and is in offie, that is and always has been unsustainable.

Just to reiterate a point I tried making on Friday, while it's great that numerous countries are now signaling a willingness to drop their tariffs and trade barriers on US goods, but in order to really bring jobs back home, along with the dismantling of as much of the regulatory state and bureaucracy that can be accomplished, How about major tax holidays and reductions for any enterprise, or person who opens a factory on US soil and employs actual US citizens. While the dismantling and off-shoring of our manufacturing sector has been going on since the 60s, it was the granting of Red China most-favored nation trading status and a seat at the WTO in the 90s that accelerated the death spiral of America's industrial base. And the blame rests both with the Clinton Dems and Bush era GOP that followed, with the headlong rush towards globalization, mixed with domestic power politics, despite what it did to the nation and people who elected them and their parties. But somehow Trump is an inept, dangerous fool for attempting to put things right.

And while that is going on, we still have to contend with this insanity:

Democratic strategist James Carville said Friday his “Politicon” podcast that those who cooperate with President Donald Trump’s administration were comparable to Nazi collaborators in World War II.

Carville said, “How disgraced must these law firms feel now? How disgraced must these companies that are sucking up to him – that are giving him tens of millions of dollars for access. Do you know what’s going to happen? Do you know how this ends? Do you know these collaborators, what the country is going to feel towards collaborators with this regime? Maybe you need to go in history and see what happened in August of 1944 after Paris was liberated. They didn’t take very kindly to the collaborators. No. It was not a very pretty sight in the streets of Paris.” He added, “I’m not saying that these people should be placed in pajamas and have their head shaved, marched down Pennsylvania Avenue and spit on. I’m not saying that, but I’m saying that that did happen. And I’m saying that these people betrayed the French nation in the same way that I think that these law firms and these giant corporate conglomerates are betraying the United States. What their comeuppance is I can only guess. I don’t believe in any kind of, don’t believe you should assault anybody.”

Except that by carefully and consciously making this analogy, it's exactly what he's saying! There's a direct line to what he is saying, to what Bill Ayers believed once he and the Weathermen overthrow the government that he'd have to liquidate 25 million citizens who refused to recognize his power straight down to the actual Hitler and his Nazis he equates Trump and MAGA Americans with.

And on that note, we have this item that also revolts without necessarily being surprising.

Gov. Josh Shapiro attended an ‘iftar’ dinner at a mosque where an imam had previously declared that “Jews are the vilest people”, and announced a huge grant for the hate mosque. The $5 million grant, described as the largest ever given to a Muslim institution, came only 5 years after the Al-Aqsa Islamic Society in Philly was forced to apologize for posting hateful Islamic sermons by an imam delivered at its mosque declaring that the Arabs were superior to all races, that Jews were the “enemies of Allah” and the “vilest of all people”.

The imam also appeared to call on Muslims to take over the world.“By Allah, if faith had taken root in our hearts, things would have been different. We would have imposed the word of Islam upon the world, like those before us did,” Imam Abdelmohsen Abouhatab told the congregation at Al Aqsa.

He also quoted a Hadith describing the eventual Muslim extermination of the Jews.

With Jews like Josh Shapiro, we don't need Nazis. Can we ask Carville about what he thinks of those who cooperate with this Imam and all who think and act like him. Of course not.

Have a good day.

14 The first thing that has to happen is that the price of fuel needs to be driven down to at least 2.50, which means production has to go way up.

That alone would have so many beneficial effects, that it could help get us through the economic re-calibration period we are going to be in for the short and long term.

18 Morning, news folken,

Someone on the Tech Thread asked me about my relocation plans, "Is West Virginia still in the mix?" I hadn't thought about it recently, but mountains are something I love and would like to be able to see every day.

When I suggested it, Miss Linda said something about West Va. "being crazy" and "removing colors from food," but my research says it's an order to remove various possibly unhealthy food dyes from school lunches and, later, all food sold in the state. RFK Jr. lauds the legislation re: Make America Healthy Again. Doesn't sound that bad.

The worst part is the pretending.

If they're honest everyone knows this is how it is, and it's not a (D) or (R) thing. It's a workplace thing. If something especially difficult or demanding needs doing it will be avoided for as long as possible, done poorly and accepted because people aren't allowed to notice things, or done badly enough that eventually a man is asked to stop with his regular duties and do it in addition to what he's expected and absolutely required to finish by the end of the day/week, too. And if he doesn't also finish his normal work he'll catch some level of crap for it.

Step outside of yourself and look at your workplace. Don't get offended at it as some sort of personal attack. It's not, it's just a social observation. If you've never noticed, start noticing. It will help everyone involved.

85 >>It seems like a lot of countries are willing to quash their tariffs if Trump quashes ours. Is that something he is doing? Pardon my dumbness.

For years, many if not most other countries have had significant tariffs on our exports. Not just countries like China but our supposed allies in the EU and Australia. In some cases we were even allowed to enter their markets while we had low if any tariffs on their products and allowed them almost unfettered access to the US market. They protected their markets and made it more attractive in many cases for US companies to offshore manufacturing rather than produce in the US.

Trump said no more and put reciprocal tariffs on them, they will pay the same tariffs they have been charging us and he's taken steps to stop countries like China from cheating by passing through their products in a 3rd country to avoid the tariffs.

This is an attempt to rebalance our massive trade unbalance that is bankrupting the country while bringing jobs back to America. There will be short term pain but it's the only way forward.

90 I caught an article over the weekend which indicated there may be some deflationary pressures being pushed into the economy. If true, that could be interesting, in the long run. Americans suddenly find out prices relax a bit across the board means they don't need raises in order to pay the grocery bill and mortgage.

Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing (tT6L1) at April 07, 2025 08:26 AM (tT6L1)

91 We're talking about the debt, how much it is, and how much interest is paid that doesn't lower the debt.

The question I have is not "How much?". It's "Who is owed?"

It was said that China owns a lot of it. But it can't be all $36 trillion of it. And it cannot be the same kind of loan as a mortgage or a pawn shop.

If interest is being paid, it's being paid to someone. Several someones. At those astronomical numbers, it isn't just one bank or billionaire.

We've already seen the self-dealings of the NGO, who are assigned funny money, then turn around and shuffle it back into the wallets of the Democrats, including some that snuck into the Republican party. What's the chance that they took money in various forms, and turned right around and 'loaned' the money back to Uncle Sam, with heavy interest? Money that never was actually in their physical hands, now turned around into an income stream.

Kinda like how the West donated all those N5 masks to China, who turned right around and sold them back to westerners.

Wonder if DOGE and DataRepublican have delved into that side of things yet. See who owns what treasuries and IOUs from the USA, and how it maps to the USAID crap.

137 This one tweet helps explain what's going on with debt.

Almost 1/3 of our debt needs to be refinanced this year.

>>@tanvi_ratna
·
>>Apr 3
Start with the debt: $9.2T must be refinanced in 2025.

>>If rolled into 10-yr bonds, every 1 basis point drop in rates saves approx $1B/year; so a 0.5% drop would save $500B over a decade.

>>Lower yields free up fiscal room—without them, core spending gets crowded out.

Monetary theory tells us that the money supply must ebb and flow according to economic needs. Too much and you have inflation. Too little and you have unemployment.

The Fed apparently decided that the money supply drives the economy, not the other way around. Dumping a ton of money into the economy, esp during COVID, is stupid.

He also quoted a Hadith describing the eventual Muslim extermination of the Jews.

In Trump's first term there was an FNM news cycle because a Christian minister endorsed Trump who also evangelized to Jews. The argument was that talk to Jews about Christianity and trying to persuade them to convert is genocide.

I read somewhere that one of the tariffs is Israel's over 200% customs duty on imported US cars.

We suffer terribly here from the cost of cars. This is one of the government's biggest rip-offs of us citizens here. There are so many others, including the control release of land.

I'm just curious to know whether Israel's customs on US auto imports is at a different rate than for auto imports from everywhere else. Based on prices here, I would assume it's across the board.

Honestly I would argue you should just consider inflation to be another type of tax, specifically one that is best for connected political insiders because they get first access to inflationary dollars.

Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act, 1934

Reciprocity: The agreements were based on the principle of reciprocity, meaning that tariff reductions by the US would be matched by tariff reductions from other countries.
Flexibility: The Act provided the President with the flexibility to negotiate agreements quickly and efficiently, without the need for individual congressional votes on each tariff reduction.”

Ackman did not care about women or children, or disabled people, or Ukrainians being menaced by Putin. He cared only about himself and money for himself when he became a backer and cheerleader for Trumpism.

Now he must let the leopard nibble dangerously on his face because he must carefully beg Trump to have mercy on him and give him time to get his finances secured.

238 Bill Ackman @BillAckman 15h
The country is 100% behind the president on fixing a global system of tariffs that has disadvantaged the country. But, business is a confidence game and confidence depends on trust.

President @realDonaldTrump has elevated the tariff issue to the most important geopolitical issue in the world, and he has gotten everyone’s attention. So far, so good.

And yes, other nations have taken advantage of the U.S. by protecting their home industries at the expense of millions of our jobs and economic growth in our country.

But, by placing massive and disproportionate tariffs on our friends and our enemies alike and thereby launching a global economic war against the whole world at once, we are in the process of destroying confidence in our country as a trading partner, as a place to do business, and as a market to invest capital.

The president has an opportunity to call a 90-day time out, negotiate and resolve unfair asymmetric tariff deals, and induce trillions of dollars of new investment in our country.

239 One of the more important secondary policy goals that the Trump White House likely hopes to achieve is a reduction in the 10-year Treasury Bond yield.

The keepers of the money supply must walk a tight line between inflation and unemployment. This line is often politically defined. This said, policy here is to accept a relatively small inflation rate (like 2%ish) and err on that side instead of heightened unemployment ("all else equal" of course 🙄. That's a subjective policy but one that is likely the least bad owing to deficiencies in, among other things, data giving us a better analysis.

Point being, the money supply does not create wealth and no reputable economist would ever argue that it does. It is apparently a lesson we must learn from time to time that the money supply is a tool to address a certain circumstance (Great Depression comes to mind) but it is not a panacea to address ALL economic ills. It may enable wealth creation but if that is moribund under different circumstances (like, say, people being under lockdown for a couple of years) then it isn't appropriate.

248 Not only are Colorado's courts actively willing to trample a parent's rights in medical decision making regarding gender "treatments, the Colorado Legislature is advancing a number of pro-transgender bills, including HB-1312.

https://is.gd/LGvbmN

House Bill 1312, among other things would recommend family courts [adversely] consider action against a parent who refers to their child by their given birth name and biologic sex.

Colorado, as do most other states, has adopted a "gender-affirming" approach rather than a "buy time while the child matures mentally and emotionally" approach. This means that prepubertal children who express any confusion about gender is socially transitioned (preferred name and pronouns, clothing choices, hairstyle, preferred bathroom) as the first step. This has the effect (as shown in the Dutch and Tavistock programs) of locking them into a fixed path to eventual medical/surgical transition. Starting them on the Yellow Brick Road so to speak, which leads to only one destination.

The saddest part is that the 3.8L was discontinued after being pretty much made bulletproof. Those engines are trivially easy to get 200-300K from.

If manufacturers didn't have to constantly try to play whack-a-mole with emissions and MPG ratings, we could have economy cars with reliable engines that would last 500K miles without much effort. The top-tier cars could still exist and chase performance and the like, but there could be good, decent transportation for folks who wanted it.

But we can't have that.

Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, these companies scrape 3% or more off of our retail sector, which is rather huge.

$100 spent at a store becomes $97 to a restaurant owner. When he takes his family out to dinner and uses a credit card, that $97 becomes $94.09. When that restaurant owner uses the $94.09 to fill up on gas, his $94.09 becomes $91.26, and so on and so forth,

The same $100 in cash passed between those three businesses is still $100 floating in the economy.

294 Trump’s economic team has subtly suggested the impact of the import duties could extend to increasing foreign direct investment in American industries, incentivize a shift in economic investment away from market speculation and into industries focused on producing tangible value, and put downward pressure on interest rates by lowering the 10-Year Treasury Bond yield.
++++
The "this is designed to compress Treasury yields so that the major rollovers will be more manageable" stuff smells a bit like 12-D chess to me. It could end up being a consequence, but I doubt it was the cause/plan.

increasing investment is also a consequence. I think it is as simple as it looks: the US economy is tapped out, the US government is bankrupt and most of the US's trading partners are the beneficiaries of unfair trade policy. So stop the strip-mining of the US economy, rebalance trade policy, add a revenue stream.

That will probably work. The questions are whether the fall in the equities market will matter and how much price increases will be - and what the effects will be on the midterms. I think it guarantees defeat in '26, but that might not matter if things are in place by then.

The U.S. government has between 95 and 175 trillion in assets. Just like a wealthy family that wants to pay off debt, maybe it's time to sell the art collection and some of the excess property. Problem is, nobody has the money to make such large purchases right now. Solution, backed by the unquestioned assets, establish an agency that will spend the next 25 years cataloging, then the next 25 years pricing the items. Declare that half the estimated return on the sales be available now. This isn't just fiat currency, it's backed by actual assets. Use the cash to not only pay the national debt, but almost all other private debt (based on balances prior to announcement) in order to gain almost total support for the program.

it puts inflation into an entirely different perspective.

If the natural order of things is for prices to gradually decline - rapidly at first, then slowly as marginal utility gets harder to eek out - then what does that say about inflation?

Because the natural tendency *is* for decreases. Better efficiency, better machinery, better manufacturing, etc. - as things improve in production, prices are incentivized to decline (and profits with them, if you're one of those "profits are evil" people, in which case you're a 'tard but you should *still* be on board).

What's the natural price change rate? No clue, but it almost certainly *is* a negative number. So the fact that it is always a positive number shows the extend of the engineered value extraction and transfer.

337 Good morning, all, and thanks, J.J. This is some Monday Morning (Wake-up) Report.

Philly aka "The Mecca of the West." Seriously. 'Iftar' dinners are thing for Pennsylvania Governors. Plural. (At the beck & call of CAIR, don't cha know?)

Year in, year out for example:
Governor Josh Shapiro @GovernorShapiro
The last few days of the holy month of Ramadan bare a special significance to our Muslim neighbors — and last night, Lori and I had the honor of hosting an Iftar dinner at the Governor's Residence and breaking fast with our fellow Pennsylvanians.
To every one who has fasted, reflected, and prayed during this holy month: Lori and I wish you peace and happiness.
Ramadan Kareem and Eid Mubarak.

After all, it's essential for a socialist democracy and a people's democratic dictatorship they so wish to have. (See Gavin Newsom.) Like China, and they do really like China.

But even here, a Nazi poster waiving, Musk despising, turning to garbage county, there are wee victories: Jewish Exponent dot com: Opinion, A Victory for Pennsylvania Taxpayers, Feb. 20, 2025

338 "The Philadelphia Branch of the Council on American-Islamic Relations will hold its annual fundraising banquet on Feb. 22, and for the first time in 13 years, it will not be held at the Springfield Country Club in Springfield, Pennsylvania, after its support for Hamas was revealed.

The venue sits on property owned by Delaware County, a suburb of Philadelphia. After efforts by groups like the nonprofit Middle East Forum exposed the local CAIR chapter’s ties to terrorism, the venue chose not to host the event this year. ..." (More)

OTOH, Philadelphia Tribune, 'Hundreds of public health jobs at risk in Philly after city loses federal grants'
Kristen Mosbrucker-Garza, WHYY, hrs ago

In part, "Those COVID-19 related grants included money for expanding the city’s epidemiology and laboratory capacity to enhance the detection of diseases, immunization and vaccines for children, as well as the Philadelphia Equitable Access Project to Address COVID-19 Health Disparities, according to the letter. These grants were not slated to expire until mid-2025, 2027 and 2029, according to USA Spending grant information."

Yup. WHYY, PBS keeps them hopping 'round here, the land where DIE won't.

339 Did I have it right, or...? Norm Eisen runs the show and Carville, etal, provides color commentary?

Cofounder of CREW (non-profit); founder and current executive chair of the States United Democracy Center (non-profit); co-founder & Board member of States Democracy Defenders Action (ditto, somewhere in there); served as special counsel to the House Judiciary Committee majority during the impeachment proceedings and trial of President Donald J. Trump in 2019 and 2020; a retired US Ambassador; a senior fellow in Governance Studies at Brookings Institute, yada, yada. (Has several impressive bios online.)
