First World Problems...

NarrowDijon.jpg

That's Dijon, home of the mustard, the Dukes of Burgundy, and where you can get lots of excellent wine!

But those dukes built the town without realizing that those narrow streets also shielded cell phones from GPS signals. So navigating the maze of streets is an exercise in futility.

Which is okay, because of the aforementioned wine.

So...never mind.

17 I got your first world problem right here.

On Friday I awoke to water dripping from my dining room ceiling. My first thought was it was coming from my washing machine which is located right above on the 2nd floor. I checked and didn't see any problems so I called the plumber to come have a look.

He said he was going to have to cut a hole in my dining room ceiling to get at the leak. After cutting the hole he said it appeared to be coming from somewhere upstream so he needed cut a hole in my guest bedroom wall which backs up to the washing machine.

He then said it appears to be coming from even further upstream so he went up into the attic and sure enough the waste vent in the roof which is plumbed along the same space as the washing machine drain was leaking and the water was running down the outside of the pvc and ending up in my dining room. And of course he could deal with it. Cause of course.

So now I have a hole in dining room ceiling, a hole in my guest bedroom wall and a big hole in my pocket. Hopefully, the roofer will be here this week to charge me more money.

20 Samsung has decided to add a new feature to their Smart TVs.

You have a row of apps that you can organize in the order you want.

It seems after the last update Samsung has decided that their Samsung Plus streaming app should always be first.

I move it 6 apps down and out of my way and after turning the TV off and when it’s turned on again it’s back in first place.

Oh my gosh, this happened to me awhile ago, not sure if you remember. We thought it was the upstairs AC, turns out it was a shower head that malfunctioned. That has been fixed, but there is still a hole in our ceiling in the living room, and a sort of patched hole in J’s daughter’s room. Just enough so the cats couldn’t get through. The painter was booked out until the end of April. Good news is since we had to wait so long we went ahead and scheduled painting the fireplace and my daughter’s bathroom that I never finished.

Yeah, all of that stuff needs to stop. After the latest update my expensive Sony TV shows me ads on the home screen. They play automatically if you’re not doing anything. No way to turn them off.

Tech companies have gone way too far in selling you a piece of hardware, then later pushing software updates that turn it into an advertising platform to squeeze more money out of you.

Should be illegal. Or, at the very least, just gut the overly-generous copyright laws which allow large corps to get away with this at consumer expense, while being protected by big gov’t.

Let's see here now: 30 years x $60 a year = $1,800 bucks to keep a crappy old black rotary-dial phone. I called AT&T five minutes after our talk and told them to discontinue the black phone and send me the packaging to use for return. NOTHING worked properly. I signed into a desktop computer and jumped through the hoops (texted verification code, face show, etc.) Instead of me getting access to my documents, it gave me the previous user's background image and a couple icons to outdated browsers. I couldn't update the browser because Technology needs a workorder. From my account.

Luckily, I had plenty of other work to catch up on.

Today I am working on the project that is due tomorrow morning. Strangely enough, I logged into the oh-so-extremely-secure work documents without verification. But I need to use a separate device to pull up information because going back-and-forth on tabs is annoying.

SiriusXM needs to be declared a Superfund site. Why does it still exist, and why is it in every new vehicle? Then the manufacturer sells your info to SiriusXM so they can pester you to sign up with texts and junk mail for the next decade. Afuera!

And why do so many modern car stereos default to “on”? You start the car and the radio starts blaring. If it can finagle a bluetooth connection, mine will just start randomly playing music.

I had to write a “script” on my iPhone to stop it from autoplaying music. Apple says it’s out of their control.

So then the car stereo falls back to radio or SiriusXM. You can “mute” the system, but that doesn’t persist across car starts. No off button. The only thing you can do is turn the volume knob all the way down.

I recently got a second number for a business line and I get 15 Social Security scam calls a day. They’re trying to reach the previous owner of the number, who I take was a little old lady. They all appear to be from India, but they’re using Caller ID spoofing.

This is a problem that could be fixed, if we had the will. India needs to crack down on scammers, and send some of them to us so we can put them in CECOT. If they won’t, declare it a national security situation and shutdown all telecoms from India. Also, drone strike the scammer call centers.

The fact that we permit these vile, cowardly foreign criminals to prey on our elderly just so we can keep “global trade” open for multi-billion dollar corporations to offshore call centers to the third world is a national disgrace.

This stuff snaked it's glowing way through the plant in a trough with rollers in the bottom. I noticed on a far wall that the brickwork was mismatched, and that there was a solid wooden door (maybe 4' x 4') in that section. I asked the guy about it, and he said that they got tired of the steel jumping out of the trough and punching a hole in the wall, so they put the wooden gate in.

68 "It's now a VOIP that I pay about $15 a year for."

idk exactly what protocol I have, but I switched from the hard line ATT (which kept getting broken) to the fiber company, when I got fiber internet. Same number, but I suppose it is now VOIP? Has been dependable, but more like $15/month.

71 BTW, this is a "landline" only in the sense that it's the same number we've had for nearly 40 years, which has some advantages. It's now a VOIP that I pay about $15 a year for.
Posted by: Art Rondelet of Malmsey at April 13, 2025 02:51 PM (FEVMW)

Verizon got rid of all the copper in our area and wanted me to go to VOIP. If I didn't make the decision by a certain date, they would disconnect anyway. Told them go ahead. I only kept the POTS line for reliability since 1974. Once they install fiber and an interface unit, I no longer have that. We have two cell phones in the house, plus my wife is an EMT with a two way radio directly to the police dept. Besides, the land line became a depository for telemarketers. No more. Gone. **makes hand wipe motion**

Then shutdown all traffic from India. How long would it take Big Tech to get the Indian gov’t in line?

“Naw, we can never do that,” says the Uniparty. “Overbearing government power exists only to enrich large corporations and foreign scammers, not to protect our own citizens.”

“That’s just racism! Not all Indians are scammers!” screams the Democrat wing of the Uniparty.

“That’s anti-free trade! It’s practically right out of Marx!” shouts the Republicuck wing of the Uniparty.

73 The Leaning Towers of Dijon.

I actually DID fix something this week - my dishwasher. I started it, went out for a walk and came back to find it flashing a code and making an unholy noise, which turned out to be the pump trying to pump nothing. Turning it off did not stop the noise, so I switched it off at the fuse box. But at least my dishes had been cleaned.

I checked the impeller and there was a hard piece of white something stuck to the metal ball that should move freely, but wasn't. I cleared that out, then opened the panel on the bottom and mopped up the little bit of water in the pan. I ran a test wash, and voila! It worked! And all put together before my husband got home from work.

Spent the rest of the week finishing everyone's taxes, including my parents. Ready for a two-week nap.

76 Being retired means I no longer have to chase water leaks in industrial buildings. I recall one older facility that the maintenance crew just gave up on, and they built a large sheet metal pan in the attic to catch the drips and drain them away.

But they usually just put a five gallon bucket up there to catch the drip and they'll be long gone before it overflows.

77 The 'center of population' is a big issue for the shipping/freight industry. Where to locate their depots?

Center of population seems a strong influence, but then, there is the issue of travel distance to where the densest populations are. Also, distance/access to higway systems, and air freight facilties. It is a complex problem for planners.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and his family were evacuated safely from the governor’s mansion early Sunday after authorities say a suspected arsonist set fire to the residence.

The fire broke out overnight after Shapiro, considered a potential presidential contender for the Democratic Party in 2028, and his family celebrated the first night of the Jewish holiday of Passover.

Shapiro posted on X that he and his family awoke at about 2 a.m. to police banging on their door after "an arsonist set fire" to the governor’s residence.

79 Idaho Spud, you of course already keep the torch lighter at a distance from the cigar, so the visible tip of the flame does not touch? Also makes it easier to avoid the ouchie oopsies you describe. A new eff-up was added to my portfolio last week. Touched the torch lighter's flame valve/whatever when picking it up - big ouch. Duh.

And Adam Tooze appears to be a shallow disappointment based on the few snippets I've seen from him about contemporary issues. His economic history of Nazi Germany is quite good.

108 CBD, we were in Dijon last September and had the same navigation trouble. Had no idea it was the narrow, yet charming streets. Hope you visited the indoor market place. One vendor found out we were from the States: picked up a piece of paper, drew a crude US outline, then started blocking out states and naming capitals. Poured himself some more white wine, got me a glass, and paused for some sales. Then back the map and the wine. Did about 40 states before i bought dried morels and a bottle of wine, and got away to the cheese shop. Got the best cheese ever,Soumaimtrain, if you like rich and flavorful (stinky). It’s also for sale in the Duty Free shop in the airport they named for you, CDG. In a bag that snaps shut for odor control!
