Meet The PetMorons

rocdoctom here. Not exactly a pet but …
Three years ago the doves tried to build a nest on the patio heater on our patio. The smooth curved surface would not hold the sticks so I put the box up on my patio wall. Sure enough, they took over and raised three clutches of babies.

To our surprise, they came back last year for a repeat. And this year, at the end of February they were back again! She is now sitting on her second set. She is very much a part of the family. We go back and forth across the patio, grill on the gas grill, mow the lawn, use the leaf blower, etc and she even ignores our big chocolate lab. It is a real treat to watch the babies after they hatch and grow big enough to leave the nest.

If she is very much part of the family, she is a pet in my estimation! Lots of fun.

RIP Zuzu

This Tuesday at 1030AM, Zuzu crossed the rainbow bridge. She was diagnosed with kidney failure last fall. She had been holding up pretty well but over the weekend seemed to crash. I had made a vet appointment for 11AM to end her suffering. But, typical for Zuzu, she went on her own terms.

Victor Tango Kilo

We are so sorry that you have lost Zuzu. It is obvious that you loved her and gave her special care. Zuzu was a special cat.

Encountered by Members of The Horde

msbeige-small.png

Hi--I was minding my own business in the apartment when I heard a series of meows out in the hallway. I opened the door and this gentleman/lady (I think I will assume lady) dashed in.

She looked around rather excitedly at the various cat furniture items I had, wondering which were hers. My cat appeared and asked "What's all this brouhaha?" and the two had a brief hissfest.

I managed to get her outside again, and gave her some cat treats which she enjoyed with gusto. I gave some to my cat as well just to even the score.

I kept hearing her out in the hallway, so I went out and gave her some pettings, which she insisted upon most forcefully. I also gave her some more treats--which she definitely appreciated--and managed to capture a portrait.

She was much too friendly to be a stray, let alone a feral. I assume she dashed out when a door was opened and was let back in when her owner returned.

My cat kept a vigilance by the door, occasionally offering the odd hiss.

Thank you for the weekend threads!

By-Tor saw a dog who seemed distressed that his special person was being dropped off at school. So difficult.

8 So sorry to learn about Zuzu. But it is interesting that she chose her own schedule.

9 Actually we named her Izumi but it didn't stick. Zuzu evolved out of that.

10 Zuzu looks a lot like my long past Sugar, was quite silvery when a kitten but ended looking like Zuzu.

11 Big black Stirling was sitting on me a moment ago, as my earlier comment implied. Dagny the Aloof Siberian has been a little less so the last few days. Both of them have some fleas -- I can tell by the tiny crusts on their skin under the fur, the bites. Dagny had it a little worse. It's been making her withdraw from my company, sitting in the bedroom window or on the bathroom counter instead of in the living room with me. Last night, though, she settled on the dinette table, and this morning on the arm of the sofa near me. Maybe someday she'll stop being aloof.

I've treated them both with the Pet Armor topical stuff, and I hope it's helped. Otherwise I'll have to spring for something more expensive, and Dagny may need some other palliative from the vet. We'll see.

18 BeckoningChasm's encounter with the stranger cat reminds me of how Linda's Angelique, later to be recognized as a Siberian, came up to me in an empty parking lot as I detailed my car one hot summer morning and clearly stated, "I need human help NAOW!" Things ended well for her. Maybe, if this one has been cast adrift, BC's incumbent cat would be willing eventually to accept a new four-legged roommate.

25 My kittehs just turned 7 on April 4th. I'd be devastated. Not looking forward at all to that day. Best thing would for them to live to 27 . I'll be ready to go with them by then.

26 There's a young (we think) grey cat which is trying to acquire staff, but is still skittish around humans. Our tortie, Slinky, (just turned is not keen on this and has cuffed at him once, hissed at him twice. Leaving the house in the early morning, he notifies me of my deficiencies (WHAT? NO FOOD YET?). He gets food a little later, and because he's shown up mornings in the outdoor fleece-lined cat bed, he gets food in the evening. He is now Phantom. Playing this by ear; will try to get pictures soon.

30 Condolences, VTK, on Zuzu's passing. We lost Slinky's daughter, Moxie, just 6 yrs old, last summer - no idea why, seemed hale & hearty Saturday night, gone on Sunday morning.

32 Ciampino, it's still under negotiation. If he can't co-exist with Slinky, he can't stay. Don't know what follows, but I'm guessing he might be welcome in a nearby home.

33 Years ago I was gifted a ginger Manx kitten. I really wanted it to hunt underground rats - in the form of gophers and moles, so to train it I used a small piece of animal fur as bait and would push or pull it through a small hole cut in a sheet of cardboard. Kitty very much liked the game.

He was an outdoor cat by day. If I was at work, he was at work. My yard was in an old walnut orchard. Lots of things scurrying about.

I've no idea if kitty was a natural born super-hunter or if the training enhanced it's instinct to hunt, but that cat grew up to wage genocide on moles etc.

I came home after work one day and he was at the back porch with blood all over his muzzle. I was kinda panicked and snatched him up for inspection. He was okay. I then looked down and he had been in the process of eating the guts of a still living gopher.

I loved that cat.

37 Elvis has a close encounter with a deer this week. I live in a pretty quiet neighborhood so he goes off the leash for most walks around the block. We were passing through a part of the road with conservation land on both sides of the road when we heard some noise behind us.

The hound immediately turned and ran to the site of 5 deer running across the road barking like a maniac. He got to the spot where they disappeared into the woods and pretended to be a tough guy telling the deer to get lost. And then the 6th deer appeared. Damn near trampled the goofy dog.

He ran to me with eyes big as saucers with a "Did you see that shit?" look on his face, whining like he had been abused. Tough guy.

42 It's been entertaining watching stray cats come in to eat. I had an interesting trip yesterday and got home very late. Mr Trouble ran up to the front door when we showed up, in need of pets and food. Jake had fun as he was taken on a couple of long walks by a guy, when I met a couple from the Horde.

And, I discovered the Walmart in Hutchinson KS has a prairie dog village! It's on a strip between the side of the building and the road. Was strange to see but they were likely there before the Walmart.

46 The stray we adopted when she was pregnant is now 18. Poor old Butterscotch, semi-long haired tortie, just couldn't handle the spring shedding of her undercoat. She was so covered with knots of hair that we had her shaved at the vets.

She really is odd looking, head and legs not shaved, the rest of her shaved. Tho she shows signs of slowing down she can still leap to the window ledge and then the kitchen table to get her food.
