Gun Thread: First April Edition!

040625 calendar-2025 scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be April? Do you know what that means? Do you know? Hmmmm??

Q: Weasel, what does it mean?
A: It's NoVAMoMe planning time!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals

Fundamentals of MoMe'n, that is.

040625 hello-moron scaled.jpg

The official date is Saturday, June 21st, so mark that on your calendars. We will again have a sign-up process but have decided to forgo the pre-paid buffet in favor of just having people order for themselves from the casual cafe-style menu. We'll have more exciting news and specifics to share soon!

We sincerely hope you can join the festivities. I promise you this event is as laid back and non-anxiety inducing as humanly possible, and nothing makes me happier than to meet new people who have been reluctant to join in the past. If sitting on the sidelines and just observing is your thing, you can do just that with zero pressure from anyone. I hope some of the past NoVAMoMe participants will jump in and share their thoughts on the event to inspire the scairdy-cat lurkers out there to throw caution to the wind and come meet your pals!

******

Snubbies
Like any true red-blooded American who grew up watching cop shows, snubbies are probably my fav-o-rite handgun. Small and compact, they also have the added benefit of working every time you pull the trigger.

Of course, no discussion of snubbies would be complete without a quick WA video.

Snubbies most definitely do not suck. So show of hands - any snubby fans out there? Who carries one for self-defense?

Cigar of the Week

040625 diogenes Cigar April scaled.jpg

This week our pal Diogenes scores again with this excellent review of the Romeo Y Julieta 1875 Reserve

Romeo Y Julieta 1875 Reserve

OK, so I have regaled you all with a review on this cigar previously, so I am not going to bore you with the details. Commonly available, great prices, and an uncommonly good cigar. If nothing else, it is a steady, reliable smoke. One of my "Go To" brands and it never disappoints.

So...

Let me talk about the smoking experience a bit. Do I smoke a lot? No. But I smoke cigars (and only cigars) just enough to know what I like and don't like. And a big part of a cigar is the experience that comes with enjoying one. In my last review I spoke of how an average whiskey can make even an average cigar better. Continuing that thought, an average cigar can make many situations better. Case in point. While the picture shows a nice display of cigar, weapon and flagon for ale, what happened was I tucked this one into my golf bag and headed out to play with the Tuesday Morning Geezers. It started well enough, but then the rain started. Gawd, after twenty years in the Army, I do not need practice to be miserable. So I pulled out the cigar and even though I was wet, cold, and in a hurry to finish the round, the cigar made it better. Smooth draw, easy smoking, a pleasant aroma. Even the other golfers came up and complemented me and asked if I had more. No. I did not. (Had I been winning I might have been more accommodating, but that's another story.)

So when you think about a cigar, it is not something where whiskey or bier is mandatory, although that is my favorite method. Sometimes it is just the perfect fit to the experience around you. Take that moment in stride and enjoy yourself.

Excellent, Diogenes! The 1875 is in my humidor. Thank you!

******

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Cigarpage.com
Famous-smoke.com
Cigarsdaily.com
Neptunecigar.com

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

15 If you depend on cheap range ammo for practice and general fun stuff, do stock up if you haven't already. A lot of cheap practice ammo is imported from overseas (Serbia, Israel, S. Korea, etc.). As such, don't be surprised if your favorite cheap ammo for practice sees big price hikes within the next 30 days as the recently announced tariffs kick in. Last minute negotiations might still save the day, but if they don't, be prepared for a bit of sticker shock.

25 Why, yes -- I do carry a snubbie in my EDC rotation, thank you for asking, Weasel-San. It's a Smith & Wesson Model 637. It's lightweight for carrying in a pocket holster in the summertime, and I can hit pretty well DA with it at prospective gunfight ranges (i.e., close). It actually shoots high, so my aimpoint for center mass is at about crotch level. I also have my eye on one of the recently released classic Model 36s, now that S&W have done away with the stupid internal lock.

33 For this week's trip to the range, I tested my SIG M11A1 with 9mm NATO spec ammo and +P ammo. This was the pistol that printed really low with standard pressure 124 grain 9mm ammo. I took whig's suggestion to see if the sights were calibrated for the higher pressure, higher velocity NATO spec ammo or if the sights were just plain off. After going through about 1/2 a box each of 9mm NATO spec ammo and 9mm +P ammo, I think whig is right. Using NATO spec and +P ammo, the rounds printed pretty close to right on target. They hit a bit low, but I'm not sure if it's the ammo or me. The higher-pressure ammo did make the felt recoil significantly heavier.

53 10 ... Skip,
Thanks for that link to the Colt 1861 test. This the first time I've seen a cap and ball revolver in a Ransom rest. Not too surprised at the results. Good quality C and Ps (Uberti, Pietta, the late lamented Euroarms Rogers and Spencer, and of course the Ruger Old Army) are capable of wonderful accuracy. As long as the load is consistent the only limiting factor is the shooter.

55 Guy (before Weasel) with the snubbie says what I've been saying for a long time: don't get all prog about technology. It's better than it used to be and it can be useful. But old stuff works. Which one of you long-rangers was it talking about shooting your M-1 with all the guy with tricked out rifles? I'd love to see someone shooting a Hawkins or something against an AR at some distance.

As to the snubbies not being accurate...
If you're talking match ammo, teeny-tiny bullseye, at 100 yards, a highly trained shooter... yeah, maybe not compared to a longer barrel. But where it counts? Minute of torso reliably? That means the world when it counts.

Posted by: GWB at April 06, 2025 07:35 PM (XR+2F)

56 So, range report: 500 yard KYL and 1,000 yard steel. Another second place finish for me. Two for two losing the shoot off, darn it!

It was a blustery day at the range, with the wind gusting and switching directions. I've gone to shooting prone, as I am going to shoot a real F Class match at some point and need the practice. Timed event for the 500 yard KYL and 1,000 yard. I did my usual and traded speed for accuracy. Yeah, I shot two less rounds than than the guys who went for it yet still wound up in a 3 way tie for first.

However, the 1,000 yard, which was also timed, ate me for lunch. Once I finally got on the target, I lost concentration and then couldn't get back on the target to finish the string in the time allotted. Still, though, I went 2 for 5 and wound up in a two way tie for 1st place. However, I am getting good enough I'm able to stay on the target even after recoil so I can see where the first shot hits.

In the end, though I'm starting to believe I'm getting good at this, if I'm staying even with guys shooting better equipment who have at least equivalent experience.

Posted by: Skip at April 06, 2025 07:36 PM (ypFCm)

58 The second handgun I ever bought was a 1994 Colt Detective Special, one of the last Detective Specials ever produced. I'd picked up a CCW permit for South Dakota, and I picked the Colt over a S&W Model 36 simply because the Colt fit my hand better than the Smith. In retrospect, it probably wasn't the best choice for a newbie to guns, but at $250, that Colt was cheaper than the Smith at $300. Today, the new (2017) Colt Cobra has a better trigger than the older Detective Special, but it doesn't have the old school Colt bluing of yesteryear. I've acquired a few more Colt snubbies since then - a Diamondback, one each of earlier Colt Detective Special issues, and a few Python snubbies.

66 Cap and ball are fun, but not for the casual shooter. Regardless of how much you shoot, you need to clean.
So, I usually wait til someone else has a yen as well.
Not like a .45ACP, which gets cleaned about every 500 rounds, whether it needs it or not.

68 I've tried various snubby revolvers. Many are just too light for consistent shooting with 357 magnums and even 38 specials can have a lot of recoil. I settled on a Ruger SP101 in 357, loaded with 38 special +P ammo for carry. It's fairly heavy for a snubby but still okay for CC and that extra weight means better control.

Missed this. Mrs CM66 uses a Taurus 85 in 38 as part of the rotation.

The better option is the the Taurus 617T in 357 titanium. The factory porting and the Hogue grip really make it fun to shoot. Although the 7 rd cylinder is a bit large for concealment.

78 My fun snubbie combination is one of the new 3" barrelled Colt Pythons shooting .38 Special ammo. The Python is heavy enough to easily soak up the recoil from a .38 Special. For serious shooting with .357, Weasel is correct - substituting rubber grips (Pachmyr, Hogue) makes the shooting experience a lot less painful.

In my case, the Taurus is too light to handle 357 Magnum. Switching to 38 special +p still gives one a stout round out of the 357 frame while leaving fingers and wrists intact.

87 I saw an interesting one from the Armed Attorneys this week:
https://shorturl.at/Gv0ml

They discuss (since we're talking snubbies, which some people carry as a backup) carrying more than one weapon, among other things. There evidently is one state that restricts you to one handgun under their carry permit. I don't know which one.

And the do not, even once, use the term "Mexican reload." Though they do say that in Texas you should carry as many as you feel will make you secure. And then some.

Higher velocity increases the odds of the hollow point ammo expanding like it should. Since snubbies don't have much of a barrel to build up velocity, you need your bullet's velocity to get up to speed PDQ.

Does that ring a bell with anyone? I've always vaguely remembered that, though.

103 67 ... "decided that I wanted needed a replica Colt Walker after someone (rickb?) noted that it is the official State Revolver of Texas."

Walker replicas can be fun but for shooting purposes, versus display, they have problems. They are HUGE even compared to a Ruger Old Army and have twice the weight of the ROA, probably a bit over four pounds. Also, the loading lever, which is unsupported, often drops after each shot, jamming the revolver. Some people tie up the loading lever with string to avoid that problem. But if you want a cap and ball revolver that will penetrate a buffalo, the Walker with its huge powder capacity will do the job.

For simple enjoyable shooting pleasure with a C and B, a Colt 1851 or 1860 or a Remington 1858 would be more appropriate. And a lot more affordable. Just my opinion.

106 Latest acquisition is a used Remington 870 12 ga. Magnum Express model, made just prior to The Bankruptcy. It came with a 28" barrel, suitable for waterfowling. Dang, it is heavy, and is best suited for sitting in a duck blind. I'd hate to have to lug it around on a pheasant hunt, let alone take it onto a chukar hill.
Digging around in the stockpile, I found an 18 1/2 inch riot gun barrel, made by Mossberg. The 870 is still heavy, but it is much better suited for indoor use now. I'll take it to the range this week and do a function test.
If this sounds like a good combo to you, Buds Guns has the Mossberg-made barrels in stock at a very reasonable price.

107 Pillage, if shooting 158 gr lead semi wadcutter hollow points, you need the Xtra umph of +p. If you drop to the fast but light aka 110 gr hollow points, the +p helps those jacketed bullets fully expand. Out of mfg, but still around at gun shows, Federal made a nylon coated lead hollow point named nyclad. Std pressure. Recommended if you don't want to fire +p. Buffalo bire has some 158 gr 38 spc that are good at std pressure as us the discontinued Golden Saber Remington 125 gr in either std or plus p.

You want a combo of penetration and expansion. Lead wadcutters are recommended if you want penetration with the lowest recoil in 38 spc. Ok for infirm or weaker hands to shoot in a steel framed snubbie.

Posted by: Sharon(mwillow's apprentice) at April 06, 2025 07:51 PM (t/2Uw)

Sharon, the Henry might be more practical for you. It's not being an AR might be an advantage since it's not a scary black rifle that blue states get the shakes about. At $1600, it's about $500 more than a mid-tier AR (Colt, FN), though. Your call. But I do recommend 5.56mm over .300 Blackout because 5.56mm is more readily available and cheaper on a per round basis. The main reason to go w/ .300 Blackout is if you want to add a suppressor. Which might be a problem for where you live.

Range practice - yes. Nothing special to report. It goes well til it doesn't, and then it's back to reviewing which fundy I messed up.
But we chuckled this week. Both of us are using a 3inch target at either 5 or 7 yds. And we both have a fit when one doesn't land on the 3in target.. Til we realized:
A) if we were shooting this well last year we would have been thrilled, and
B) if hitting a bad person, either 3in or 6 inch is gonna work!
And thanks for the videos on the .22 Rimfire and how rifles are made. Our research and considerations continue....

Posted by: Chappyman66 at April 06, 2025 08:04 PM (2fldW)

121 Walker replicas can be fun but for shooting purposes, versus display, they have problems.

For me, it's totally about the Texas connection. Actually shooting it would be a secondary consideration. My cunning plan would be to get a conversion cylinder and load up some LRN with black powder (or more likely Pyrodex). Which of course would address exactly none of the problems you noted. But it would be fun.

Oh my, yes! Weasel said it. Reloading can be as enjoyable as shooting. And if you buy components in bulk when on sale it is a LOT cheaper than commercial ammo. There is a personal time factor, of course, but the advantages are ammo tailored to your specific needs and freedom from supply problems. Unless you are trying to crank out hundreds of rounds per hour, a good single stage press, which is all I use, can last generations. I have a Lee Turret press bought as a factory second 40 years ago which still works perfectly and it does everything I need.

142 All this for $190 more than the plain one. I see very few used UCs for sale, and those are priced at very close to the $729. but there are plenty of used 642s for sale at about $400.

Unless you especially want the bling, for my hard earned $$, I'd go with the used standard one. You may find the factory trigger completely acceptable for a defensive gun but if not, you can have a 'smith slick it up for less than the difference.

145 Snubby accuracy: Years ago I was varmint shooting the local ground squirrels. I ran out of rifle ammo, but still had some daylight left. Digging around in the truck, I found my snub nose S&W .38 and a bag of plinking ammo. After dispatching a few squirrels at short range, I spotted one a long ways off, standing on his mound.
Taking careful aim, I shot and kicked dust up on the mound. The squirrel ducked underground, but immediately popped back up. At my second shot, to my surprise, the squirrel flipped over. I decided to investigate.
67 long paces across flat ground later, I found the deceased squirrel. Nudging him over with the toe of my boot, I saw that I had hit him right between the eyes. I went back to the truck and drove home.

150 I've asked before, but saw a new one yesterday (Viper) so I'll ask again: What's the rundown on the Python, the Cobra, and the Viper? (Also, the Diamondback, if it's .357.) How do they differ?

I still want that Python (2020) in 4". But nothing says you can't own 2 guns of the same make.
Posted by: GWB at April 06, 2025 08:02 PM (XR+2F)

Colt Cobra (2017): The 21st Century version of the Detective Special. 2" barrel. Rubber grips.
Colt King Cobra (2019): A beefier version of the Cobra chambered in .357, fitted with rubber grips. Originally came with a 3" barrel. More recent carry versions have 2" barrels (like the old Colt Magnum Carry from 199.
Colt Viper: Identical to the King Cobra, but equipped with walnut grips instead of rubber. Comes with either a 3" or 4" barrel. Has only a half-lugged barrel instead of a full-length lugged barrel like the Cobra and King Cobra.
Colt Python: Medium frame revolver in .357. The "Cadillac" of the Colt revolver line, with a significantly better finish and trigger. Has a fully lugged barrel and signature vented rib like the originals.
The Colt Diamondback is a vintage revolver without a modern counterpart in today's Colt revolver lineup.

Wood grips, aka splinter grips with bare forestrap and backstrap, are not friendly to hands. A few with really big hands put wood target grips on them especially the Smith K Frame snubbie.

The slimmest and best recoil absorber is the Hogue set and pretty cheap too. But, some do not like it because the rubber is rather grabby which can introduce problems on draws like from a pocket.

Pachmyr has two different grips, the Combat grip and the Presentation grip. For a snubbie, the Combat Grip is usually the one to get and the grip is less sticky than the Hogue but since the rubber is a bit harder-less recoil absorbing and they are better for bigger hands.

FWIW, Buffalo Bore (not Bire) has lead free snubbie 110 grain hollow points that are std. pressure. Expensive but use the well regarded Barnes TAC-XP copper bullet at about 1000 fps more or less. Designed for short barrels.

152 Cigars into the humidor today, 5 each, all toro size-
- Puro Ambar, a 'legacy' (no longer made), excellent construction, weird flavor with wrapper soaked in wine, I can see why they failed in the market, but I like it and bought 20-25 when big on-line cigar store found some and sold them cheap.
- Punch Bareknuckle, just about anything else from Punch I found better, reviewers did too as this one didn't get a 90+ rating. Full flavored yard dog.
- Ramon Bueso Olancho, loved this one when I first tried them. But, cigars like with wine, some years are better than others. Yard dog now, so sad.
- Plasencia Sonador, haven't tried it yet, probably a typical connecticut and mild.

Depends on why you want it.
You mentioned home defense. The Henry is still a lever gun with the associated speed deficit.

Don't get me wrong, I lurv me my lever guns including my Rossi 92 in 357.

But the AR platform is inexpensive and much faster for follow up shots. PSA has many shorter threaded uppers for options if you want short home defense weapon or something suppressed.

Unless you are magazine limited (SNBI) the ARs are tough to beat ...and you can get wood furniture for them.

157 Just finished a jaunt over to YT. I watched a video covering the recent shoot-out between the Harry S. Truman strike group and the Houthi militia in the Red Sea last week. The Houthis were able to get their re-purposed drones to within CIWS range twice before being shot down. Hmmm ...

Another was taken down by a SM-2 missile. A rather expensive tit for tat.

In naval terms, CIWS range is equivalent to snub nose range for personal defense.

Posted by: mrp at April 06, 2025 08:21 PM (rj6Yv)

158 As far as accuracy goes, snubbies are as accurate mechanically as their bigger counterparts when fired in a Ransom rest (mechanical rest used for testing firearm accuracy with the trigger pulled mechanically rather than by a human).

However, you do get an accuracy dropoff at longer distances than 25 yards simply because of bullet drop ballistics requiring either different powder loading than the longer barrel or some other means to compensate for the lower velocity when firing the same cartridge.

People have tested old worn M&P revolvers (predating the number system at S&W) in such a rest and got results close to 1 inch groupings at 25 yards and 2 inch at 50.

170 I have heard that, too. But I understand the "Mexican reload" name came about because it was the practice of a great many Mexican banditos and tough men to carry a second gun tucked behind their sash at their waist. I should probably look more into that.
Posted by: GWB
=========
Haven't heard of Mexican Reload but have heard of Mexican carry which is appendix carried without a holster in the waistband. Some cops I knew called it felon carry as it was common for felons to carry that way too.

It can be illegal in some states to carry a firearm in public without a holster probably due to the chance of accidental discharge.

If you must do this, I recommend a firearm with a grip safety. Covering a revolver spur with a thumb on draw might also help with less efficacy as would a safety.

Dangerous to carry a glock or some other firearm with only trigger safeties that way.

173 I've long heard the complaint about black powder guns is they have to be cleaned after every session. True, but it only takes me about 5 or 10 minutes longer to clean a Colt 1851 than it does a modern revolver. Same with long guns. Considering the history involved and the fun factor, the small extra time is worth it.

BTW, unless I'm taking a modern gun out the next day or so, I clean them after each session. Don't know if that's a personality quirk or a habit from shooting black powder.

I see the Speer short barrel rarely nowadays. Right now, the best boutique self defense loads for 38 Special are coming from Buffalo Bore for older firearms including even the 32 S&W Long.

I know some like the Lehigh copper bullets that look like a twisted phillips head screwdriver and that would be appropriate in the only state stupid enough to ban hollow point ammo (NJ). Full wadcutters would be my next recommendation for that state.

Glad that worked. Sig, in my experience with my own handguns, prefers NATO loads in the P series. Smith and Wesson Third Generation and earlier prefers 115 gr up to +p+ for their steel framed ones in 9mm. +p+ is about 1300 fps and definitely NOT recommended for most 9mms.

Watch out for old Smith and Wesson boxed ammo when Smith actually reloaded ammo in the 80's. Stuff is really hot in loading. Still see it around at gunshops and I had some inherited and you could tell from recoil, etc. it was hot. Turned out even their regular 38 spc +p was loaded something to 1050 or so fps at 158 gr scalloped hollow points. Technically more like +p+.

Stout with a blast and recoil to boot.

194 One comment re old Colts versus Smith and Wessons. Smith generally had a bit better double action pull from the factory and Colt had a better single action pull. Old Colts have a tendency to stack the trigger in double action (that means the trigger gets heavier (harder) to pull as you approach the trigger break) due to its v main spring. The Smith did not. A gunsmith can alter the spring geometry of an old Colt to avoid this but by the time that was discovered, Colt was changing its lockwork by 1968 to its current (more or less) system.

Smith changed their lockwork around the post war WWII era due to a few Victory series accidental discharges when dropped and that gives those after WWII a bit different feel when firing.

I got a nice orange yellow blast at an inside range when I fired them with notably more recoil and noise. Fortunately in a GP-100. Felt about like the old Skeeter Skelton load (Skeeter used 38 SPC cases due to being cheap (got them for free) with something like +p+ territory.

FIL loaded some for me based on that load (did not know that) and it produced substantial recoil and a big orange fireball on the firing line. Once again, fortunately I was shooting my Ruger at the time chambered in 357.

I quit having him reload for me after that and did it myself. Which is about what one should do.

True, I have just never flown with a gun before. And I'm not sure I want to deal with having one with me in the ATL (although I might end up needing it there, I have no CC permit as of yet, and prefer not to experience the hospitality of the Fulton County Jail.)

218 I'll mention something about snubbies--if you do have one for self defense, make sure that you carry at least one speedloader with you.

Snubbies require care when trying to do a reload. If you have something less than a 2.5 inch barrel, you may not punch all of the empties out unless you raise the snubbie all the way up to the sky to have gravity help you do that. Also literally smacking the extractor rod with the flat of your hand helps ensure spent case removal. For this reason, I recommend using nickel cased self defense ammo for snubbies when carrying as well as brass will sometimes hang up.

Now, the bullets, a revolver doesn't care much about the bullet shape it fires, but it does care when you try to load them. Full wadcutters are much more difficult to reload in a hurry--semi wadcutters are better, and round ogives are the best when you are trying to align the speedloader with the chambers of the snubbie.

Some grips may have to be cut so as to allow speed reloaders from Safariland or HKS. If you have pretty wood grips especially of the Magna design, that means cutting out some of it to allow clearance or do without speed loaders (or changing grips).

And haven't chased the little white ball for a while, though expect to resume soon (had a body part replaced), as well as getting back on the ice. When I had a cigar on the course, typically it would be a bundle connecticut or something. This stick is a classy one to burn between chunked second shots and bad chips and missed 3-foot putts.

As noted before I typically have coffee, as the burning takes place in late afternoon. Only occasionally pair with booze, though with warmer weather and longer days coming I should do more of that, as I have amassed a good selection of rum, bourbon, rye, and cognac to choose from.

Colt Magnum Carry (featured in one of my early cigar reviews) is my favorite. On the small side, a Smith Model 60 with a CrimsonTrace grip is nice, wife loves it. On the beefier side, a Colt King Cobra (old production, not new line) was a "rescue" (mispriced low at my old indoor range, finish restored etc. by Colt Custom Shop with a personal connection of sorts). Purty, and valuable, and nice to shoot.

That sounds like you have nailed what your rifle likes to eat without excessive pressure. Borescopes back when Hawkeye was the only one in the game, used to be so costly only advanced competition shooters and gunsmiths had them. Universally they were first shocked when using them on new rifles due to different problems they found in the bore.

But, they shot fine. FWIW, I have nightmarish looking bores in old milsurps (e.g. a 1916 original SMLE barrel will tend to look that way from shooting cordite powered ammo), that actually shoot within specs.

They will foul quicker usually but as long as the muzzle is in decent shape aka crown and at the end of the barrel for the last couple of inches (often damaged by cleaning rods in countries that issued them), matter the most.

Throat erosion affects them but mainly if the erosion is not uniform as it produces problems when the bullet hits the rifling. Nicely evenly worn rifling after the throat will shoot better than you think.

Some fairly stout recoil in any short barreled 45 ACP and I think that particular adaptation has a coned barrel instead of a barrel bushing. Colt, I think, came out first with a 3.5 inch barrel called the Officer model 1911 using that. Detonics had one that was on Miami Vice in about the same time frame.

You might find modern self defense ammo in 45 ACP a bit skimpy though for short barreled 45 ACP as that is kind of a niche itself.

243 Finally got to an action handgun match yesterday after a long time for various reasons. Didn't shoot badly considering the amount of trigger time I've had recently (another failing slated to be fixed).

I didn't do a count, but on my squad it seemed 90% now use optics. Also not a rigorous analysis, but observing, taping and scoring targets, the accuracy for the better guys was no better than it's always been. Lots of practice, modified triggers and platforms make these guys good shooters, but it's hard to see the optics have changed anything.

All my stuff is stock, no optics, and generally in the past I shot close to these guys when I was practicing more. The Gear and New Stuff aspect of the gun nut pathology is not really very strong with me.

256 I guess I do have some gun content because we did have a sidebar discussion with swa about rifles. She started with that Henry and it kind of went on about what was available in 5.56/.223 and the various parameters of the multi-attribute decision model going into the selection process.

I have been wanting to add a lever into the laager but I do have a black rifle thing going on so a Henry Big Boy X is cool but of course not in 5.56. Plus I would get into ammo sprawl. A detachable mag levergun seems like a cool piece of kit, no one else is doing it, but it's Henry and its pricy.

If you want to shoot .223 with a cheap riflebudget oriented firearm you can get a pretty decent gun from PSA for under $500 bones. And THIS IS NOT LEGAL ADVICE but while MD has some specific anti-AR-15 regulation, if you buy a lower and an upper separate, you have not technically purchased an AR15.

I use my borescope mainly to look for bad problems in old milsurp barrels which are almost always used--sometimes very used. I honestly did not think I could save the 1916 SMLE as it appeared almost a smooth bore but figured due to its relative historic value (shopped variant) to keep the action together. Turned out to be badly fouled with some pretty bad pitting in the grooves affecting a bit of the rifling and it had a well worn throat but mostly concentric. Crown was ok.

For similar reasons, I got ready at one point to fire lap a barrel but chickened out because it shot ok (1916 GEW Mauser 9 using the old roller coaster iron sights.

Hand lapping is artistry with a barrel where people do it for a long time to get proficiency. Much easier to buy one done by someone else.

Easiest way for us normies to do it is via fire lapping but if it shoots the accuracy you are reporting, I wouldn't.

You can make an accurate rifle barrel using all the different methods, the oldest being cutting one groove at a time. Button uses a carbide button and CHF-cold hammer forged barrels require really expensive and massive machines to do it made by one company in Austria the last time I checked.

276 For information that folks may or may not care about.

When I am talking about fire lapping, I am speaking about using fired bullets to accelerate wear in the barrel so as to remove manufacturing imperfections.

Fire lapping is using a bullet embedded with lapping compound and firing it through the bore btw. Essentially you are betting that the wear induced by the fire lapped bullet series will improve accuracy. Pretty much a last ditch effort to improve a poor shooting barrel but has the potential to make it shoot worse.

Hand lapped barrels, by contrast, are essentially polishing the bore with a lapping compound impregnated lead slug which is carefully moved though the barrel repeatedly by hand. Does the same job as firelapping but requires vast skill (not a diy job really) to cast the proper slug, impregnate it, and not damage the barrel when doing it over and again. you pay for that guy's time but get an awesome polished bore that rarely fouls much and retains top notch accuracy. Only useful for the best barrel makers.

277 Speaking of optics - I have been a proponent of dots on everything. And that got retrofitted to dots on everything made for dots.

I don't know exactly where I am right now. There was a period of time where the dots improved my shooting. But I've had a lot more time regularly shooting and the dots make minimal difference now. I can shoot my iron sight pistols as well as my dotted ones. Longer arms still need optics. But I watch swa shoot with a nice greendot Holosun and an ironsighted G48 and she shoots both just as well.

It's almost like something else matters. Something, you know, fundamental...

282 266 Hello there,
I finally managed to offload The Giggle Machine (RIA 1911 in .22TCM) and was tossing up whether to replace it with a lever gun or scout rifle for that coveted 'range toy' spot we all have in the safe and suddenly...snubby enters the chat. Hmmmmmm
Posted by: Nato

Snubbies ain't exactly a fun gun but if you can shoot a snubbie in double action accurately, then you will be able to shoot other handguns more accurately as well. Have to execute Weasel's basics on trigger and alignment perfectly to shoot them well.

286 Whig, I borescoped the whole process, also over at my site. Running 2625 fps through my Garmin, and no erosion. But I discovered really abysmal tooling marks in the grooves.

Posted by: RI Red at April 06, 2025 09:00 PM

Red (and others),

Do the tooling marks really matter since they are the same for every shot?

Or does their ability to trap residue increase to difference in bullet strike versus POA from shot #5 to shot #25, compared to a cleaner bore? (And is therefore detrimental?)

I use diamond lapping compound down to 1 micron as a stropping/polishing abrasive and that's like a zillion grit.

That is kinda one of those secret sauce that each individual barrel lapper figures out that works for him and his employer.

You can get JB Bore Cleaner and follow it with their JB Bore Bright. These are basically lapping compounds and you do similar strokes with a cleaning rod and patch wrapped old bore brush to do it.

It does reduce fouling on older and worn bores without removing enough to effect accuracy. Need to follow the directions exactly but it does work and helps even old pitted bores look brighter instead of gray.

On a new bore, I would try firing range quality ammo for about 100-200 rounds first before going to this extent. Often firing enough plain fmj bullets will end up polishing the bore just fine. Accuracy may start at bad and then gradually improve as you shoot and clean, etc. as needed until the fouling lessens and accuracy is better.

Weasel is at the top scale of accuracy where every advantage matters. Doesn't matter so much for a hunter, casual range shooter, etc. except for the nuisance of cleaning the fouling.

But, every rifle barrel is almost an individual in itself as to what it likes and doesn't like. Buying expensive barrels with expensive handlapping improves the odds if everything else is there like stock, shooting ability, receiver, etc. but most people can't shoot that well anyway as to notice.

295 Hickok 45 the YouTube guy says as re snubbies that the huge percentage of defensive shootings is a 3 round 3 yards 3 seconds thing.

I practice with my handguns at 7 and 15 yards, 15 for the Ruger MKII gummint 22. My only revolver is a Ruger SP101 3" and I hit far better with it, than with my semiautos in 380, 9, and 45.

I need instruction and a lot more range time, I guess.

296 Head to the ranch tomorrow. A couple of pews to stretch out. Hand loads for the 7 and, well, hand loads for the muzzleloader, too.
Hornady makes some 50 cal, full-diameter, pressure-based, ballistic-tip ML rounds that are now legal in Idaho. Have to see what they do.
Loads for the 7mmMag are 175 grn ballistic tip boat tail to compare with some commercial rounds. Since I laddered the handloads last week, I know the commercial will be faster, but I bet mine are more accurate at long range.
