That top story about flame retardants:
1. Everything in California causes cancer. 2. Prior to the 90s(?) the limits of detection were measured in ppm - parts per million. Then instruments got much better as they became digital. Now we measure by ppb - parts per billion. Guess what, at this level almost any material will contain a speck of anything. It seems that analytical chemistry has gotten amazing but the practitioners more stupid. 3. Show me the research were ppb of these heavy metals did harm. Local TV covered the Hands Off protest downtown with video from some other town. Still, maybe 30 people in the video. But, the building they were standing in front of simply does not exist in this town.
I try to encourage them whenever I can. I tell them the protests are working because I keep getting my social security payments. Also, standing on corners chanting and waving swastikas is a sure strategy to sweep the mid-terms. Sadly, I had to explain to one what the mid-term elections were. Who is John Galt ? The birds here are in full on grazing mode. I, well the grandson, have filled all three feeders this week and it looks like we'll be going to the store to get another sack this week. I did see a squirrel atop one of them though and there's quite a bit of it on the ground underneath the feeder by the desert willow. I guess the dove gotta have some too. We routinely get cardinals, dove, bluejays, wrens and titmouse's and a woodpecker shows up every once in while.

"RealPage has a point there, since the exact same thing happens in markets where the company has never operated."
California and NYC have famously operated like this before the internet came along. Try again. They artificially restrict supply. Demand stays the same or goes up. If fix one leg (the supply) then in order to bring down price, you have to bring down demand- which they are kind of trying to do by turning into blue shitholes. Keep going, it'll happen eventually. A trade deficit essentially means that the US is receiving many goods and services from a country in exchange for pieces of paper, and they are receiving fewer goods and services (and thus giving us less paper), Wolfers says. Who cares? Economics isn’t a zero sum game. Many of our beautiful and brilliant Verge subscribers are in a trade deficit with The Verge, as they pay us $7 a month for our fine text products, and we buy zero dollars’ worth of things from them.
Behold the simplistic, contradictory stupidity of the modern socialist-capitalist. Well then, if it’s all about pieces of paper that nobody cares about, then let’s print more of them. Lots and lots more of them so everybody can buy everything they’ve ever dreamed of, with absolutely no consequences, ever. Imagine, Elizabeth, how much per month you could charge for your “fine text products” if that were the case. Why you could double, triple, quadruple that and make $28 from your loyal idiots. Of course, by that time they’ll be paying $9 a gallon for gas and a gallon of milk will set them back $8, and rent will be $5000 but all works out in the end, right? Trump’s supposed ultimate goal is to bring manufacturing back to the US, but this isn’t going to happen either. That requires a less uncertain environment so companies will invest in building here, for one thing. It also requires a workforce — and it’s unclear why Americans would choose to work in manufacturing jobs as long as they have other options.

“A trade deficit essentially means that the US is receiving many goods and services from a country in exchange for pieces of paper Who cares?”
We owe it to ourselves! The reality is they can save the dollar, or they can save the markets. They can’t save both. Historically a government will always tend to “print”, because this is expedient. Volcker at the Fed helm was able to staunch inflation by jacking the overnight rate - the interest banks charge each other - to 18%. If they tried anything like that today, the government would have little money for anything else except paying interest on their debt. As it is now all of it rolls over every 4 years. It was attractive to roll it into low interest debt starting in the 90s but they compressed the time frame. I’m not an economist but it looks like they painted themselves into a corner.
*** The problem is we run trade deficits with nearly every country on Earth. If an individual runs trade deficits with everyone they do business with, they’d eventually end up broke, because the money they send out never finds its way back. We’ve been sending more money overseas for the last 40+ years than we get back. This isn’t because China is cheating us (well, not solely), it’s because the entire structure of the global monetary system requires a steady flow of Dollars out of our country. Ultimately, it’s devastating. It’s turned America into a wasteful consumerist country, and gutted our productive capacity. It’s made us dependent on foreign regimes. Tariffs can’t fix that. Groovy, man My son is not growing weed in the backyard or anywhere else. I don't think he's even had weed. I think it is much stronger than it used to be. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at April 06, 2025 08:33 AM (r69/0) 169

What gave them that impression is that they managed to stay in an educational institution for right around 20 years and that piece of paper they got afterwards proves they are the smartest, most talented people to ever walk the face of the earth.
Back in the day, when my job required me to be part of the interview pipeline, I had the opportunity to speak with a number of people with advanced degrees. In each case I found them to be enormously more knowledgeable than me about a very narrow, almost certainly utterly inconsequential topic. The stuff they would be hired for? They were, at best, no better than the people with a bachelor's degree. Posted by: I used to have a different nic at April 06, 2025 08:36 AM (ExV1e) 171

Tariffs can’t fix that.
Well, its a crying shame that we can only do one thing at a time and you have declared by fiat that tariffs have no part in the repair of this country. So lets keep doing what we are doing because the world is depending on us to bankrupt ourselves while forcing half the producers in this country to support the world of parasites on its back. Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at April 06, 2025 08:40 AM (a4flb) 173
I don't want to talk about tarriffs today ( although I realize many people have interesting, helpful info about them) so before I get crabby ( and no, this does not have to harvesting crab apples) because I am tired, I am going to go away to do my work which is not in a factory but it sometimes does involve work with hands such as setting up for the rummage sale, putting down gravel in the driveway and planting flowers in baskets in front of the church. I hope everyone had a blessed day and knows that you are blessing to others.

Certainly a lot more than tariffs being applied to the problem set there right now. There is so much deferred maintenance to be done, that there absolutely has to be this flurry of action at this point where we have an executive willing to actually DO something! Weed is stronger today because of the nice, friendly chemicals that is sprayed on it to give it that extra kick our users know and love. Here at Mainway Weed & Smoke Inc. we pride ourselves on spraying our weed down with PCP, RAID and that Red Flame Retardant #5 to give our consumers what they want.

If tariffs "just get passed on to the consumer"and "hurt the economy", then shouldn't the countries that tariff US goods be more expensive and have failing economies?

My father was a CEO in New York who grew up as a laborer and spent his weekends working on our property, teaching me the same skills and habits. He and my uncle (with help from my pregnant mother) built the house I was born in. Together my father and I cleared acres of land, rebuilt engines, designed and built barns. I ended up in a "cognitive" line of work and it never occurred to me to look down on people who worked with their hands. Indeed, I had more respect for those who did than many of his and my business peers who hired Manuels to do their manual work for them.

I do not look down at all at people who work with their hands. I don't know any conservative that does. My husband spent many years in manufacturing jobs and our son in currently working in an agricultural setting.
I deliberately left a city full of "knowledge workers" to live among people who work with their hands. When times get weird, I would rather be with people who can hunt, fish, weld, back a trailer, clear wood, have a lot of time on tools rather than mad skillz in making yet another Power Point deck. The next big difference I see is that knowledge workers get their psychotropics from better drug dealers. Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at April 06, 2025 08:49 AM (a4flb) 184

Posted by: It's Not That Hard at April 06, 2025 08:45 AM (PEDYf) It would be amusing for people to argue that those countries are more expensive and do have failing economies and that the only thing keeping them afloat is the constant theft of US taxpayer dollars to send to their "elites". It's amusing to me that the "experts" that tell us to trust AI are the exact people AI is going to end up replacing first.

I have been playing with AI a little bit these days. So far I haven't seen much other than some pretty useful summarization of existing data. This can certainly save time when doing research on a topic, but I haven't seen it generate anything completely novel.

Have you seen any of the stuff by King Randall on X? He's a young black guy. He grew up with adults that showed him how to fix things. So he teaches young black boys how to do simple construction, change tires. They also learn manners. I've seen another one, by a woman teaching young girls manners. If there is a recognition in the black community that there's something lacking, maybe it's time to recognize that all our young people need training in life skills

Weed is stronger today than pre-90s stuff because of horticultural methods of combining different strains of marijuana into more potent hybrid strains.
They’re are basically three types of MJ; Indica, Sativa, and Hybids of those two. There are many different types of each of these, grown in different locations with different environmental conditions. The better the plant is taken care of and protected from weather, pests and diseases the more potent the flower will be as a result. And while weed certainly has gotten a lot stronger in recent decades, the most powerful stuff around now are marijuana products that are concentrated THC extracted from chemical processes and put into drinks, gummies, edibles, and even the most powerful one of all THC Vapes, Dab and Diamonds that are like 60 - 90% pure cannabinols. So yes, it’s definitely not your grandma’s Woodstock weed anymore. Posted by: SpeakingOf at April 06, 2025 09:02 AM (6ydKt) 195

There are many problems with the report on Phos-Chek MVP-Fx. One is the lab test results in the "Heavy metals in fire retardant samples" table from USC Environmental Chemistry Laboratory. 42 out of 44 results from samples in the field end in ".00", indicating that results are being reported with two extra significant digits. A USC undergraduate taking quantitative analysis would at minimum lose a grade and get chewed out for making such an error.

So I got started with author Stephen Hunter reading his "The Bullet Garden," starring Earl Swagger.
I'd read about Hunter, who is a big gun ownership guy, and the WW2 sniper story certainly had a lot of gun tech in it. So now I am reading a 1930s-era spy novel of his, hardly any gun tech stuff, but excellent storytelling. "Tapestry of Spies" is the title. If you know of the "1984" author George Orwell, his early life, you know he left England in 1919 after signing a contract to be a policeman of the British Raj, in Burma. There is a good novel by Paul Thereaux, "Burma Sahib," with Orwell as the central character, telling the tale of that part of his life. Orwell witnessed an execution and wrote about it. One of the central characters in "Tapestry of Spies" did the same as Orwell, shipped to Burma as a cop, witnessed an execution, and wrote about it. So Hunter is using Orwell's story as a plot element. Is this stealing? Posted by: Mr Gaga at April 06, 2025 12:11 PM (KiBMU) 201
"The Last Train to Clarksville" I think is the first song on the B side of their first allbum. As kids in the late 60s and early 70s' we did not realize the record had a B side for several years. "I'm gonna buy me Dog" is the last track and one of the best songs of all time.
