Top Story

What's truly inside that bright red flame retardant used on bright red flames from the fires caused by California's definitely not bright but certainly Red government? No-one would say so we drank some to find out. (LAist)

If you scroll way down in the article you'll find a table with the tiny legend:
Measurements in micrograms per liter.
Most of the metals mentioned are benign in the quantities found. Zinc and manganese you will find in dietary supplements because you need them to live.

But what does 591 micrograms per liter mean for arsenic, a well-known poison?

Well, the LD50 for arsenic in humans is somewhere between 1 and 3 mg per kg of bodyweight for adults. (It's better known for rats because nobody complains if you try it out on them.)

Which means that if you drink twice your bodyweight in flame retardant, you'll likely die. So don't do that.

To be fair, LAist interviewed scientists who told them exactly that, and they put it in the article:
That said, multiple health experts told LAist that the risk to members of the public exposed to the retardant when doing activities like hiking, is likely low, given the concentration of contaminants present in our samples.
"It should not be a reason for panic, but maybe it's a reason for caution," said Dr. Ana Navas-Acien, professor and chair of Environmental Health Sciences at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University, who reviewed the results.
Also, the stuff hangs around afterwards, and residents and cleanup workers should be careful with it. You can suffer ill effects from doses far short of lethal.

Fortunately, the stuff is, as we noted, bright red.

This is one of the new raft of tiny networked storage devices that pair four M..2 bays with a low-power CPU, in this case the Intel N150. Along with that it has 12GB of RAM (soldered), 64GB of eMMC storage for a boot drive (also soldered), two 2.5Gb Ethernet ports, two HDMI ports, one USB-C port running at 10Gb with DisplayPort alt mode, a headphone jack, and another USB-C port for power.

The problem with these low-end solutions, the article notes, is that the N150 only has nine PCIe lanes in total. The eight PCIe 3 lanes are used for the four drives, and the single PCIe 2 lane for the two network ports.

Given those limitations, how well does it work?

Well, with four drives in RAID-5 (actually RAID-Z1 using ZFS, but that's essentially the same thing) it can deliver 3.6GB per second locally.

Which is rather a lot.

From a single network port you can get 300MB per second, so it can easily saturate the network bandwidth. Liliputing tried it with a 5Gb USB Ethernet adaptor and they got 600MB per second over that, again saturating the connection.

So given those limitations, it works just fine.

This is actually a good thing and we should see more of it. Because if the good guys don't find these bugs first, you can bet the hackers will.

And it's something where it doesn't matter if the AI is wrong half the time. If it reports bugs that don't exist, it just wastes your time checking them. As long as the false positive rate isn't too crazy, it's still valuable.
RealPage, a company that specialises in price-fixing software for rental markets, is suing the city of Berkeley for banning it for, uh, specialising in price-fixing software for rental markets. (AP News)

RealPage is currently being sued itself by the DOJ, as well as Arizona and Washington D.C. and multiple private parties.
Berkeley's ordinance, which fines violators up to $1,000 per infraction, says algorithmic rental software has contributed to "double-digit rent increases ... higher vacancy rates and higher rates of eviction."
RealPage said all these claims are false, and that the real driver of high rents is a lack of housing supply.
RealPage has a point there, since the exact same thing happens in markets where the company has never operated.

2. Prior to the 90s(?) the limits of detection were measured in ppm - parts per million. Then instruments got much better as they became digital. Now we measure by ppb - parts per billion. Guess what, at this level almost any material will contain a speck of anything. It seems that analytical chemistry has gotten amazing but the practitioners more stupid.
3. Show me the research were ppb of these heavy metals did harm.

42 The birds here are in full on grazing mode. I, well the grandson, have filled all three feeders this week and it looks like we'll be going to the store to get another sack this week. I did see a squirrel atop one of them though and there's quite a bit of it on the ground underneath the feeder by the desert willow. I guess the dove gotta have some too. We routinely get cardinals, dove, bluejays, wrens and titmouse's and a woodpecker shows up every once in while.

They artificially restrict supply. Demand stays the same or goes up. If fix one leg (the supply) then in order to bring down price, you have to bring down demand- which they are kind of trying to do by turning into blue shitholes. Keep going, it'll happen eventually.

We owe it to ourselves! The reality is they can save the dollar, or they can save the markets. They can’t save both. Historically a government will always tend to “print”, because this is expedient. Volcker at the Fed helm was able to staunch inflation by jacking the overnight rate - the interest banks charge each other - to 18%. If they tried anything like that today, the government would have little money for anything else except paying interest on their debt. As it is now all of it rolls over every 4 years. It was attractive to roll it into low interest debt starting in the 90s but they compressed the time frame. I’m not an economist but it looks like they painted themselves into a corner.

The problem is we run trade deficits with nearly every country on Earth. If an individual runs trade deficits with everyone they do business with, they’d eventually end up broke, because the money they send out never finds its way back.

We’ve been sending more money overseas for the last 40+ years than we get back. This isn’t because China is cheating us (well, not solely), it’s because the entire structure of the global monetary system requires a steady flow of Dollars out of our country.

Ultimately, it’s devastating. It’s turned America into a wasteful consumerist country, and gutted our productive capacity. It’s made us dependent on foreign regimes.

Tariffs can’t fix that.

Back in the day, when my job required me to be part of the interview pipeline, I had the opportunity to speak with a number of people with advanced degrees. In each case I found them to be enormously more knowledgeable than me about a very narrow, almost certainly utterly inconsequential topic.

The stuff they would be hired for? They were, at best, no better than the people with a bachelor's degree.

180 My father was a CEO in New York who grew up as a laborer and spent his weekends working on our property, teaching me the same skills and habits. He and my uncle (with help from my pregnant mother) built the house I was born in. Together my father and I cleared acres of land, rebuilt engines, designed and built barns. I ended up in a "cognitive" line of work and it never occurred to me to look down on people who worked with their hands. Indeed, I had more respect for those who did than many of his and my business peers who hired Manuels to do their manual work for them.

183 I do not look down at all at people who work with their hands. I don't know any conservative that does. My husband spent many years in manufacturing jobs and our son in currently working in an agricultural setting.

I deliberately left a city full of "knowledge workers" to live among people who work with their hands.

When times get weird, I would rather be with people who can hunt, fish, weld, back a trailer, clear wood, have a lot of time on tools rather than mad skillz in making yet another Power Point deck.

The next big difference I see is that knowledge workers get their psychotropics from better drug dealers.

194 Weed is stronger today than pre-90s stuff because of horticultural methods of combining different strains of marijuana into more potent hybrid strains.

They’re are basically three types of MJ; Indica, Sativa, and Hybids of those two.

There are many different types of each of these, grown in different locations with different environmental conditions.

The better the plant is taken care of and protected from weather, pests and diseases the more potent the flower will be as a result.

And while weed certainly has gotten a lot stronger in recent decades, the most powerful stuff around now are marijuana products that are concentrated THC extracted from chemical processes and put into drinks, gummies, edibles, and even the most powerful one of all THC Vapes, Dab and Diamonds that are like 60 - 90% pure cannabinols.

So yes, it’s definitely not your grandma’s Woodstock weed anymore.

200 So I got started with author Stephen Hunter reading his "The Bullet Garden," starring Earl Swagger.

I'd read about Hunter, who is a big gun ownership guy, and the WW2 sniper story certainly had a lot of gun tech in it.

So now I am reading a 1930s-era spy novel of his, hardly any gun tech stuff, but excellent storytelling. "Tapestry of Spies" is the title.

If you know of the "1984" author George Orwell, his early life, you know he left England in 1919 after signing a contract to be a policeman of the British Raj, in Burma. There is a good novel by Paul Thereaux, "Burma Sahib," with Orwell as the central character, telling the tale of that part of his life.

Orwell witnessed an execution and wrote about it. One of the central characters in "Tapestry of Spies" did the same as Orwell, shipped to Burma as a cop, witnessed an execution, and wrote about it. So Hunter is using Orwell's story as a plot element.

Is this stealing?
