Sunset over the Gulf of America - Naples, Florida

Howdy Hordelings! Hope your Sunday has been a good one. I'm currently returning from a weekend in sunny and humid Naples, Florida (yup - the Pickleball Capital of the World!), so our good friend T Rex, the Dino himself, will be your chaperone for the first hour or so tonight. Please behave yourselves or else he might slap you with his little arms. Collect yourselves and step on in to enjoy tonight's ONT.

Sports History on Long Island Today

Washington Capitals legend Alex Ovechkin scored his 895th career goal today. He broke Wayne Gretzky's record.

That was John Walton of Caps Radio on the call.

Here is the local TV call from long time Caps broadcasters Joe Beninati and Craig Laughlin (Joe B and Locker)

Joe B and Locker were there to call his first goal back in 2005

Congratulations Ovi!

Town Introduces Wavy Traffic Lines to Slow Down Motorists

doof-wavt-traffic-lines.jpg

Driving along Gray Lane in Montgomery Township for the first time must be quite the trip, both literally and figuratively. That’s because the regular lane patterns have been replaced by wavy, zig-zag lines that look like they were painted by a drunk. But they are wavy by design. According to Montgomery Township officials, the unusual patterns were deemed as the best solution to discourage speeding on some of the municipality’s streets. Police sources told local media outlets that the “traffic-calming measures” were installed in response to numerous complaints about certain streets being used as “speedways”.

“Our Highway Safety Officers and Traffic Engineers have determined that this is the best course of action for the area to ensure the safety of the local residents,” Montgomery Township police wrote in a Facebook post.

“Yes, it looks like somebody just drawing lines went off the road and did their own thing, but it’s not what is happening,” Board of Supervisors Vice Chair Annette Long said. “There actually is a plan for what’s going on here.”

Long claims that this is just the latest solution to the speeding on Grays Lane. In the past, speed bumps were considered, but they were considered incompatible with the steep gradient of the street. Police radar and police cars positioned at the end of the street have also been used, but they couldn’t be used at all times, so the wavy pattern was considered the best alternative. Not everyone agrees, though!

From the article:

If we might make a humble suggestion to the authorities of Montgomery Township, you would have been better off using deliberately confusing lines like this French town.

Fashion Face-Off: What Men Like for Women vs. What Women Love for Themselves

Fashion is a personal statement, but it’s also a conversation—sometimes between what we want to wear and what others want to see us in. When it comes to men’s preferences for women’s fashion versus what women choose for themselves, are the differences striking? Let ‘s find out.

~~
1. The Silhouette Showdown for Spring midi vs. mini, A line edition

   a) Jason Wu pointelle dress in cream

   b) Tom Ford Couture mini in wool silk blend, ecru

2. Color Connector- Bold vs. Neutral

   a) Melania in Decoupage jersey dress by Delpozo

   b) Melania in cream Michael Kors

   c) Really? These are the Melania pics you chose this week?

~~
3. How about crop pants? love them or hate them

   a) Moussey Vintage distressed tapered jeans with a t shirt

   b) Linen capris with t-shirt by Quince

   c) No thank you

4. Let’s head out in summer!

   a) Lily Pulitzer Parogi Skort Romper

   b) Linen shorts by Banana Republic

   c) What about booty shorts?

~~

Give your answers in the comments and let’s see if there is a divide between women and men.

Thanks, Piper! Although I'm not really sure about the Horde's ability to argue over anything. Has that ever happened before?

DJ Doof - This Day in Country Music Version
(from thisdayinmusic.com)

In 2016, country music troubadour Merle Haggard died on his 79th birthday. Born in California, he spent time in prison as a young man before transforming his life by pursuing a successful career as a singer/songwriter. Haggard was one of the key architects of the 1960s Bakersfield country sound, defined by jangly guitar and soaring lap steel guitar lines. He topped the US country singles chart 36 times between 1966 and 1987; his final album, Timeless, was released in 2015.

1999 - An all star tribute to singer, songwriter Johnny Cash took place in New York City with Sheryl Crow, Chris Isaak and U2 all performing for the TV special.

1988 - American country singer Tammy Wynette died aged 55. She scored 12 hit singles including 'Stand By Your Man', and sold over 30 million records world-wide, married five times and once filed for bankruptcy. Known as the first lady of country music.

41 Amazing story out of DC - a couple was charged with vandalizing five different Teslas over the course of the last month.

They're both accused of writing political hate speech on five different Teslas over the past month in Northeast D.C.

The phrases included "I like what Musk is doing," "ask me about my support of Nazis," "Let’s do away with the administrative state! Buy a Tesla," "I love Musk and hate the Fed Govt" and "Go DOGE. I support Musk killing the Dept. of Education."

The husband was formerly employed by the General Accounting Office, and the wife is a lawyer and is the
"Chief Strategy Officer" with the Smart Electric Power Alliance NGO, doubtless funded by the US Department of Energy.

Prior to that, she was a senior official with the Edison Electric Institute for sixteen years (the Edison Electric Institute is the national trade association for private electric utilities).

Fortunately for them, a DC jury will never convict them, so they'll be able to go back to Tesla vandalism before you know it.

59 Police sources told local media outlets that the “traffic-calming measures” were installed in response to numerous complaints about certain streets being used as “speedways”.

This usually ends up being caused by the local government installing "traffic calming" on the main roads and reducing them, intentionally, to gridlock.

I had one stretch of road that I commuted on for years where the highway went through the wealthiest, bluest town in the area. The town got approval to put a bunch of traffic lights on the highway and kept screwing with the light cycle so traffic gridlocked for the people trying to get through their town on the highway.

Well...then GPS came along and now it routed people through the side streets in their wealthy blue town instead. Oh how they howled about the traffic...but they wouldn't remove the lights they put on the highway either so..f*ck them.

74 Advice request:

In the Olden Dayes, I used to get about 10 death threat emails per week due to the Mohammed Image Archive, which enraged jihadis.

Then the whole "cartoon crisis" sort of eventually faded from the headlines, and the rate of death threats dropped, until they were no more than about 1 pitiful one per month.

But just this morning I got a new death threat email, yet this one not so pitiful, but from someone claiming to represent either (apparently) a terrorist group or a middle-eastern intelligence service, basically saying that if and when they track me down, they will kill me - -UNLESS (of course) I first delete the Mohammed Image Archive.

It could be some mouth-breather in his mom's basement somewhere -- or there could be a germ of reality to it.

I'm not particularly worried that they could track me down, so I ain't deleting nothin', but even so, I wonder if I should engage in the following strategy:

Post the jihadi's email publicly online, and invite people to anonymously send abuse to him --partly for the fun of it, but partly to confuse the perpetrator with a flurry of confusing and infuriating "chaff," none of it actually from me.

Suggestions?

On a woman that age, yes, something less baggy (literally).

It would probably be cute on a little girl? Piper has the right word with "adorable."

Or maybe it's just the rest of the look. I realize fashion models are supposed to look a bit creepy or mean, so that you look at the fashions and not at the pretty girl's face. But the helmet hair, enormous glasses, and Arnold-as-the-Terminator facial expression kind of kills the whole thing. She's too fashion-modelly.

Yes, that is so a word. Modelly.

All bullshit.

So-called "traffic calming" are gross inefficiency and/or revenue through ticketing and nothing more. It would be more cost effective and meet the alleged intent if they just let the roads turn to shit and be half potholes. But hard to write a ticket for hitting a pothole... But crossing a solid white or double yellow? That's gold!

Then there is the 'traffic calming" of sitting at a redlight with a cycle so long there are people getting on the road and catching up to the queue before it turns green again.

They should add multiple speed humps and dig a lot of potholes. Makes as much sense.
Posted by: mindful webworker - imagine self-driving cars there at April 06, 2025 10:11 PM (qzYav)

Any attempt at "calming traffic" is an admission that government refuses to take care of the 5 to 10% of truly reckless drivers, but feel the need to do something.
Something always turns out to be slowing down the vast majority of drivers who just want to get where they're going and end up pissed off.
Turning 2 lane and a parking lane into one lane with a bike lane that zigs and zags into what would be a straight line. Multiple roundabouts, wiggly lines, whatever.
Punish the masses because they don't have the balls to take care of the problem.

Bessent alludes obliquely at one point to what was the over-issuance of short-maturity debt by the last "administration" towards its ignominious end. I saw an advertisement/article talking about how Half Life 2 has been remade so that people with ray tracing cards (I think I'm remembering this correctly) can play with updated graphics and the video cards will sort of fill in the gaps from the old 2005 or whenever graphics up to a more crisp, modern style. Pretty neat, although I have a hard time using "AI" for anything and think it's just a lazy catch-all, especially if this is mostly just a nearest-pixel guess type of thing that is just improving.

That said, there is probably going to be a lot of money to be made in that stuff if you were entering college right now, similar to the 1990s and PCs/internet.

Why would men be better at billiards? Just the reach advantage from being 6" taller on average?

Or is it like men's and women's chess tournaments?

Men are "better" just because of numbers: if there are 100 women and 100,000 men who try to be world-class competitive at chess, it's just basic probability that none of the 100 women will be in the top 100 or 500 players overall.

Or men are "better" because we're so much more likely to have the autistic-spectrum focus to spend decades mastering chess, or billiards, (or engineering, or model trains, or whatever), while women's brains aren't nearly as likely to have that "defect?"

Quietly, because the Pens are not going to the playoffs, Crosby had a hat trick against Dallas on Saturday. He's averaged a point a game for 20 years. I think he's just behind Gretzky with the stat.

The NHL is blessed to have both of these guys still playing at a high level for this long.

I'm hoping for one more playoff run for the Crosby era Pens.

315 I chased two NOAA weather balloons today. The first landed in a gated community that I could not access. The second landed about a half mile from the road in a field, but it was too dark for me to go traipsing in there. I shall not rest until I bag one of those suckers! A new obsession.

Just t tell the gate guard that you are from NOAA, and you must collect the balloon because it carries a radioactive source used for measuring cloud density

Why go through all that rigmarole? Just tell them you're a Chinese spy come to collect their balloon. Be officious and Chinese-looking for that added 'authority' vibe.

I give zero fucks about these fags. They had nothing to say about tariff imposed on us all these years. Free traders aren't about free trade at all; like supposed libertarians, they've been full of shit since the Obama administration. At least.
