The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

President Trump is quite the fan of executive orders, and because Congress has mostly abrogated its responsibilities, it makes sense for him to use that power to begin the shift to a more law-abiding and rational election system. Everything in his elections executive order is reasonable and very obviously long overdue.

Fact Sheet: President Donald J. Trump Protects the Integrity of American Elections

It all sounds nice, and the second a Democrat sits in the Oval Office it will be destroyed with the stroke of a pen.

Congress must act, and use the power giving to it by the United States Constitution. It isn't even complicated. No penumbras and emanations; just a few simple sentences granting Congress the right to regulate state elections for representatives, and senators.

Constitution Of The United States: Article 1, Section 4

The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of chusing Senators.

Oh... there might be an argument about Congress regulating the presidential elections, since electors are simply "chosen," but that is a fight worth having. It seems unlikely that the SCOTUS will reaffirm Congressional power to regulate some elections but not the presidential election.

Regardless, it is up to Congress to act. But they probably won't because the marvelous status quo of the uniparty makes Congress wealthy, and almost entirely insulated from repercussions for their shady, grifting acts. Cleaning up the elections process would jeopardize that, and they won't risk it.

If they do take up the banner of election integrity, it will be very interesting indeed to see who defects to the fascists across the aisle. In the Senate: Collins? Murkowski? McConnell? And in the House: Fitzpatrick? Bacon?

Now is the time to act... there is no guarantee that the 2026 mid-term elections will turn out well for the forces of election integrity, which is shorthand for freedom and American Exceptionalism!

Sure, if President Trump is successful in reorienting the economy toward domestic production and stopping the hemorrhaging of money we don't have to foreign manufacturers, then it is entirely possible that the mid-terms will be a referendum on a new American century! That sounds great! But why risk it. Right now, the Republicans have a bare-minimum majority in both houses, and the tone of the country seems supportive of a coherent election integrity policy that would merely fall into line with the rest of the free world.

So stop dawdling and vote on a comprehensive bill; and call it something cool like The MAGA Voting Rights Act of 2025!

Come on... a fella can dream!

Re-interpretation of the Voting Rights Act could go a long way.

But, yes, the dangers of ruling by executive fiat rear their ugly head there as well.

8 Probably not the best idea, but like everything else, you could just tie it to money.

Have a funding mechanism for elections. Play by the rules, your state can get funding for paying election workers, etc etc. Don't want to play? Pay out of your own pockets.

I hate it. But it might work.

McConnell? Maybe, since he's already announced his retirement so he can show his ass without consequence.

The Disaster Twins? Maybe, but the bill could be filibustered in the Senate so they could play the good little Senator game.

15 Democrat electoral fraud is legendary. I read somewhere that it was common knowledge in the 1960s with campaign officials, the rule of thumb was, any Republican had to make up a million legitimate votes just to break even in any national election. I’ve often wondered what the public sentiment would be if the media and other propaganda organs - particularly schools - weren’t fully committed to brainwashing everyone as well.

28 Interesting that among the blizzard of EOs Trump has signed one he did yesterday might help put a bit of popular support behind election integrity. Trump signed an EO yesterday to take away the security clearances for Chris Krebs and investigate his actions around the 2020 election.

If you don't remember, Krebs was the head of CISA during the 2020 election and he testified the election was the safest election in history. He lied, of course. And he was personally responsible for insuring the election was not secure.

Hopefully, all the shady shit he did with Smartmatic and Dominion and other issues comes to light. No better way to prove that our elections are completely insecure than to show the American people the evidence and that includes the millions of illegals given the right to vote by the Biden administration that DOGE has uncovered.

I know that each state is in charge of how they run elections but I have always believed that there needs to be Federal control for Federal office elections. 68 Mother Jones: House Republicans Are Set to Pass a Voter Suppression Bill That Would Disenfranchise Millions
“It’s a five-alarm fire for American voters and for election officials”

...the House of Representatives is set to pass a measure, the SAVE Act, that is described by voting rights advocates as perhaps the worst voter suppression bill ever seriously considered by Congress. It could disenfranchise millions of voters and would severely limit how Americans can register to vote.

Under the alleged need of stopping noncitizens from voting in federal elections, which is already illegal and exceedingly rare, it would require documentary proof of citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate, to register to vote.

...69 million women who have taken their spouse’s name do not have a birth certificate matching their legal name and could find it much harder to register to vote under the bill...Greta Bedekovics, associate director for democratic policy at the Center for American Progress, calls this “a marriage penalty” that “completely ignores the implications of the 19th Amendment.”

76 I seriously doubt you can use elections, as they are today, to effect some sort of election reform. The system in its current form is designed to resist all attempts at reformation. I include anything and everything a motivated Congress would try as well as anything a motivated President would try too.

You have broken tools to use to fix a broken system that is unable to be fixed by your broken tools... even unbroken tools would be questionable at this point.

Something outside the existing framework will likely be required. What that "something" is, is debatable.

Yeah, and the history suggests that states will just roll everything into one standard to make it easier to operate.

So, even if for some reason states decide to run two separate, concurrent elections at great cost, we'd still have cleaner elections for the federal legislature, limiting the ability of states to cheat their way to influencing national politics.

Do you honestly think there is no other member of the Republican caucus in the House that wouldn't like a perfect bill that represents every single thing we want other than Massie? Sadly, that is not how Congress works, wasn't even designed to work that way. It was designed from the jump to be a system of compromise for better or worse.

It's gets tiresome hearing Massie and his supporters constantly voting against the good and possible just to make a point when everyone knows the perfect is impossible.

Every vote Trump has wanted, that Johnson has to whip, Massie has voted D/anti-Trump and said publicly prior to the vote he would do so and do so gladly. Every single one this year. No about 1/2 the people pay nothing and of the half that do pay 1/2 of those pay almost all the taxes. Kid was genuinely shocked to hear it. Like at its base it’s stupid and unfair that 1/4 of the people carry the other 3/4on their backs.

210 H.R.1 - For the People Act of 2021 117th Congress (2021-2022)

This bill addresses voter access, election integrity and security, campaign finance, and ethics for the three branches of government.

Specifically, the bill expands voter registration (e.g., automatic and same-day registration) and voting access (e.g., vote-by-mail and early voting). It also limits removing voters from voter rolls.

The bill requires states to establish independent redistricting commissions to carry out congressional redistricting.

Additionally, the bill sets forth provisions related to election security, including sharing intelligence information with state election officials, supporting states in securing their election systems, developing a national strategy to protect U.S. democratic institutions, establishing in the legislative branch the National Commission to Protect United States Democratic Institutions, and other provisions to improve the cybersecurity of election systems.

Further, the bill addresses campaign finance, including by expanding the prohibition on campaign spending by foreign nationals, requiring additional disclosure of campaign-related fundraising and spending, requiring ...

One abusive tactic the British government used was having voting, and the place where legislatures met (in the cases where they were even allowed) way out in Bum Fucked Egypt. "Sure, you live in Virginia, but your polling place is in Utqiagvik, Alaska, and that's where your legislature meets."

That abuse was called out specifically in the Declaration of Independence.

"He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures."

States are addicted to the federal teet now. Even deep red states, especially deep red states, would be sending Senators with explicit instructions to get more fed funding. If they failed, they'd get recalled and replaced very quickly, sending in someone new who would follow orders.

292 It was better that way. The whole idea was that states would choose Senators to represent and advocate for the state -- and the state citizens -- in the federal government. What we have now is Senators who represent and advocate for the federal government at the state level. It's completely upside down.
Posted by: Elric Blade at April 10, 2025 11:58 AM (iFTx/)

========

The irony is that returning to that model now would probably just make things worse.

States are addicted to the federal teet now. Even deep red states, especially deep red states, would be sending Senators with explicit instructions to get more fed funding. If they failed, they'd get recalled and replaced very quickly, sending in someone new who would follow orders.

US makes up about 15% of China’s exports. And we can’t live without them at the moment. The rest of the world won’t, either, because most of the world has no alternative.

China has a huge domestic economy, as well. This idea that the world’s largest economy exists solely to fill Walmart is a bit mistaken.

364 Step one: abolish rank choice voting to the extent Congress can. Murkowski is a beneficiary of that, and I think the obvious reason they put it in in AK. Not sure Congress can alter that since it's a choosing of Senators but perhaps in other places it exists. I believe Maine uses it for the House and thus it made the only GOP seat in New England go to a Dem a few years back.

365 Oh fuck this. Clearly it's time I shut the fuck up and reconsider whether my failed suicide attempt a few years ago was a good or bad thing.

Bye, and frankly for the last time. Feel free to swagger around with the patronizing tough talk and how I’m the problem and should get a tougher skin or think positive or whateve4r the fuck

Time for excedrin headache # .45

367 The thing now is for the husband to take the wife's maiden name in addition the wife taking the husband's name while also keeping her maiden name.

So, you end up with two hyphenated surnames, i.e., abominations.

369 How about a federal election requires a federally approved ID? City/county/state than throw ballots off the back of a truck and suffer the consequences.

371 of course like your web-site however you have
to take a look at the spelling on quite a few of your posts.
Many of them are rife with spelling issues and I find it very bothersome to inform the reality on the other
hand I'll definitely come back again.
