23 Mr. Hooper was the son of Robert King Hooper, who owned a fishing fleet that worked out of Marblehead, Massachusetts. The younger man already sports the rotund physique that Copley had captured in a portrait of Hooper's father years earlier. Behind him, the sea, visible through an open window, recalls the source of his family’s riches. Robert had graduated from Harvard in 1763, and Copley's painting shows him settling into the comfortable life of a merchant prince.

87 Copley owed his living to this new class, whose wealth supported the artists, writers, and educators of the colonies. He had joined the elite not long before, through his marriage to Susanna Clarke, daughter of a prominent Boston merchant. The union literally moved Copley up in the world, where he and "Sukey" bought property on Beacon Hill, above downtown Boston.

Posted by: rhennigantx at April 14, 2025 09:44 AM (gbOdA)

88 I like the details and colors in Copley's paintings. Even the poses, while formal, are natural enough. The view of the outdoors seen through the window make me think of the Mona Lisa and others of that period. But the face seems off. It's like it was added after the rest was done or painted by another artist. It's a bit wooden and not quite connected to the rest of the portrait. The portrait isn't bad, mind you, just not quite right.

110 Hello all

Wanted to check in. I took a few days for full time treatment.

I know the topic of suicide is uncomfortable for many people. I beg your indulgence. The Psych encourages me to talk this out and I trust you as friends.

Last Thursday after reading a few things, something snapped in me. I immediately went to the safe and took out my H&K. It is the first handgun I ever owned and thought it appropriate that I come full circle. This was NOT an impulse. It required walking to the basement, entering the combination, and so on. Had it loaded and ready when my daughter got home early for spring break.

That was a serious shock. A clear voice hit me saying "who will take care of her?" It's a voice that has spoken to me before, especially when my father disappeared and left me and my kid sister without a dad. I took up the mantle for her then and I can't abandon it for my kids now.

111 Cont.

Guns are now inaccessible. I'm fortunate that short term disability is in play now and I can get back to work with flexible arrangements when ready. No one is letting me be alone.

My Psych asked me if this was a cry for attention. No it wasn’t. If I wanted attention I'd tell TJM that Prometheus is Quentin Tarantino's fault.

Thanks for listening. This is a good place and I count you as friends.

J

Addendum.

I'm also advised to speak about specifics. So in last week's thread there was this (Comment 365):

https://tinyurl.com/5fnaw8yv

For someone who "panics at everything" this person doesn't seem all that panicky.

It's worth considering that there are real people involved here, and perhaps a default modicum of grace and respect is not inappropriate. That goes beyond this example too (right, Pope Alexander VI?).

This invective is something that doesn't belong in society at all, let alone this website. Being an asshole just to be one is not a virtue.

196 Military fires commander who dared to criticize Vance's Greenland stunt. Col. Susannah Meyers had written an email to service members at the base after Vance's failed PR visit to the island, saying, “I do not presume to understand current politics, but what I do know is the concerns of the U.S. administration discussed by Vice President Vance on Friday are not reflective of Pituffik Space Base.”

It was that email that got her canned.

She was fired for being a woman in a command position. Trump and his fratboy Defense Secretary have made it clear that the only role women should have in the military (and life in general) is in the kitchen.

the Trump Regime is trying to incite panic with their statements and she was trying to set the record straight. If dispelling obvious lies are now illegal then we are truly fucked.

Aw, did President Musk Lite have his delicate feewings hurt? Did the Dear Leader Jr. have to grab his pearls and head to the fainting couch with his smelling salts. What a bunch of thin skinned wimps. Big tough guys with the emotional maturity of a 4 year old who wanted pancakes instead of cereal for breakfast.

But my friend's brother is having surgery in Romania in literwlly a few minutes. You would love them. During Covid, with a newborn baby in tow, they were fighting back against stores, calling out store managers and fighting about facemasks.

They homeschool. Their children are the best.

And I cleaned myself up enough yesterday to be with my friend, The surgery for his brother is in a few minutes. A few good thoughts would be amazing,

I actually have 6 more beers. I'm going to finish them and watch stupid crap. But their cats come in at 11am. Damn it, I have to get pics to the Pet thread.

But if you can send some prayers or good thoughts to my friend's brother, that would be cool.

I'm going to rest now...

I just finished reading Franklin's autobiography. He was born in Boston, baptised in the Old South Church and worked as a candle-maker with his father when he was just 10 years old. At 12, he became indentured to his brother James, who was a printer in Boston. He broke the indenture five years later and went to Philadelphia to work for a printer there. Ever after, Philly served more or less as his home town. It's amazing how much he accomplished by the age of 20. His dream as a boy was to live life on the seas.

I'm going to leave you with a little story. A few years ago I built a harley motor for a guy. The dude was fully engaged in the project of rebuilding his bike. He seemed thrilled, happy, he was back on the road. He even brought his young daughter to the shop to show her what he was doing. About a year or so later he decides to go into that young daughter's room, sat on her bed, and blew his frigging brains out. Because they were local I managed to see her and her mom in a local convenience store a little while later. I can't get the image of her face out of my mind sometimes. Its not the same girl I first saw. The scars he left on her....yeah. The voice you heard? Listen, and never stop listening.

350 "Don’t all of the SpaceX manned flights do the same?"

afaik, yes, but they are practicing for a vertical landing, on the moon, or Mars. I suppose at some point they will test it with humans on Earth, but more difficult with 6x the gravity (or maybe not, idk).

It's good to see you around. I'm sorry for what you are going through.

I did write this to you last week - wife's son took his own life and I have watched her become a shell - a zombie of a woman - that's pretty much it for her on some scores. Part of her life is over. I understand his reasons and I understand his pain and his father is a piece of shit (he did it on Father's Day). All she wants to know is if he changed his mind but too late. She imagines her baby boy suffering in his last moments and there is no solace in it for her. No resolution.

Point being all it does is wreck the people who care for you. And ONLY them. He believed he was "doing the world a favor". But he wasn't. He's likely shortened his own mom's life. There is no "for now". There are people who care, probably more than you know, and that is a brutal thing to choose to put them through. I don't mean to weight that on you. But that's not my weight, I'm just pointing it out. And in a way I'm sorry to do it because I feel like it minimizes your own pain.

Not that my words will likely cut anything but I have to try. Also I like you a great deal.

This just goes to show how many scumbag illegals there are lurking around us. Apparently, so many Mexicans are illegal they can't have a parade without running the risk of major deportations.

I wonder if they announced prior to a gay pride parade that they'd be arresting all pedos whether they'd have to cancel that parade too. My guess is yes.

I have heard that voice, too and know it to be God. I bled out after my appendectomy and was flat lining. It was warm, and safe, and I really wanted to let go because it was the most peaceful feeling I had ever felt. But I heard a voice telling me no, you have 2 (at the time) girls who need you. You must hang on. So I did. I am grateful for this experience every day because I know there is a God, and I know there is a place after this earth.

The boundary they crossed is the Karman line, and is defined as where there is no longer enough atmosphere to provide any lift, and therefore any lift must be provided by the (presumably rocket) engines.

There is debate as to whether that is the 'boundary' of space. The U.S. uses 50 mi. of altitude, not the 62 mi of the Karman line. Others say it should be higher.
