All seriousness aside, the light from the windows does not dazzle (unlike so many H'wood movies and TV shows nowadays), but illuminates the people and their faces and body language.
Since everybody is dressed warmly even indoors, I expect this is a winter's day with lots of sunlight, and the hearth fire in the peasant hut has not yet begun to warm the room. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 09, 2025 09:40 AM (omVj0) 49
In the last years of his life he was working on a monumental painting The Forgiveness Sunday (1911), a social-satirical mood of which was inspired by the events of 1905. After the revolution Maximov could no longer portray peasant life in the way he used to. He entered into an open struggle against social evil, and the oppressed but humble peasant was replaced by a warlike-minded working class man.

This is a charming scene. The unmarked floor and bright walls and ceiling demonstrate how fresh everything is, a new beginning. The many well wishers, each one an individual in facial expression, action, age and clothing, shows how important the occasion is to the village. I like the way the artist uses natural bright sunlight to bring out the qualities of the fresh wood and the details of the clothing and sparse decorations.

Agreed. It makes similar use of light to bring out the many accurate details of the scene. Also, there is a sense of movement in the new cabin just as Troiani always has movement in his paintings. Somebody stopped buying American oil. — That’s not quite how it works. There’s no American oil or foreign oil market. It’s all one global market and one price. Oil is fungible. But that aside today’s oil price is a future price. Its a bet on what demand / supply will be in a few months from Now, not today. It’s why it takes some time for gas prices to fall when oil prices fall. The decline is a bet by traders that a recession is coming. Recession means less demand for oil hence cheaper price. > I guess in Russian winters a long beard was the only way to keep your face and throat from freezing.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at April 09, 2025 09:37 AM (omVj0) Peter the Great (which would be a good name for a male porn star, come to think of it) banned beards, in an effort to make Russians look more like western Europeans. One of several policies aimed at bringing Russia into the 17th Century. You could keep your beard, but only by paying a tax. There was even a special coin minted for that purpose. The beard thing, along with several reforms of the Orthodox church just before that time, led the so-called "Old Believers" to decamp. Some headed for the depths of Siberia. Some went to China. We've got a bunch of them here in Alaska. They're sort of like Russian Amish in that they still wear clothing from the 1600s (though, unlike the Amish, they don't mind technology). Pro tip: never, never, never attempt to outdrink a group of Russian Old Believers at a party. Never. And if you do, be on guard lest they attempt to engage you to their 14-year-old sister. Other than the extremes like Cali, Illinois, etc yeah state taxes are generally in the same band when you add it all up. Some have low sales or low/no income tax but they make it up with high property or tolls or car registration tax. Adds up to around the same. Depending on individual situations some are more advantageous than others. If you’re retired you want low property tax instead of low income tax. That kind of thing. But the overall tax burden isn’t that different state to state.
And then there’s Alaska which is its own thing. Posted by: Its Go Time Donald at April 09, 2025 10:20 AM (Y5yQx) 213

That’s not quite how it works.
Posted by: Its Go Time Donald at April 09, 2025 10:02 AM (Y5yQx) ================= That's not quite correct, as there is American sourced or stored oil and there is oil on the high seas or sourced from other countries. My son's manufactured home is being delivered today. We share a driveway and part of his section goes across my property and it doesn't have gravel yet. It's spring in Indiana. We got flooding rains last week. The ground is soft. They are absolutely wrecking my yard and the end of the driveway already. This delivery is gonna be seriously unpretty. Don't get me wrong, it's worth it to have the spawn and his lady and my brand new grandson back on the hill, but damn! I've been getting this place looking great for twenty years. Then we got a manufactured home and tore down the old house before it fell in. Last spring and summer Hubbymayhem and I worked our asses off trying to get the place looking decent again. The French President once attempted to surrender to a group of cub scouts on a European tour. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at April 09, 2025 10:49 AM (W5ArC) 273

No, like many Americans he has seen that Israel can run its own wars, and pay for them too.
I am very pro Israel, but we need to get out shit together here. Posted by: Seems Legit It's not Israel that's the issue, it's Iran. It is not in OUR interest for that regime to continue in existence. Posted by: Bulg at April 09, 2025 10:50 AM (77rzZ) 275
On the other hand, the French are still building nuclear reactors, so maybe we don't have that much room to criticize.
Nah, to hell with it. Let's keep criticizing them. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at April 09, 2025 10:51 AM (W5ArC) 276
WELL, Tucker is wrong. He is lumping the ME situation around Israel and Iran into the same (rational) bucket as Russia/Ukraine. It does not help that he is extremely paranoid, after years of believing DC. Well, no one told him to believe DC. Does not help that the two faced players he is talking to in the ME (PM of Qatar or whatever) keep poisoning his mind. His buddies in Qatar are telling him that OMG!! A catastrophe! (If Israel hits Iran). In reality, the only catastrophe is the loans and insurance for business development various players in the ME won'd be able to secure due to the war. He is not seeing he is being played. If there was not a tie between war and financials , ME countries would not give a fk about who is killin' whom.

From a strictly esthetic point of view, under Lady Bird's influence they would seed the roadsides throughout the state with blue bonnets, the state flower. Looked awesomely beautiful in the Spring. Though it seems that practice has gone away. Sad. Posted by: naturalfake at April 09, 2025 10:49 AM (iJfKG) I still see a bunch of bluebonnets in season. Or black-eyed susans, or indian paintbrushes. China's road and belt initiative in Afghanistan is smart, instead of trying to fight them (you won't win) they're going to build and buy them. Baghram is a player in all that.
We spent billions for that base and we left hundreds of millions worth of equipment there it was insane that we left it (at least that way). Posted by: Seems Legit at April 09, 2025 10:57 AM (PMtkd) 289

I see that Chy-na has slapped a retaliatory tariff on us.
I don't know how that's going to work out for them, in that we mostly buy cheap junk from them, and they mostly buy food from us. Speaking of, has anyone noticed that Amazon's delivery times on Chinese stuff has gotten dramatically longer... like a week and half rather than a couple of days? I wonder if everyone involved is slow-walking shipments to see who has a chair with the musical tariffs stop. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at April 09, 2025 10:59 AM (W5ArC) 292

Posted by: Seems Legit at April 09, 2025 10:57 AM (PMtkd) I used to work with a guy who was involved in the shutdown of the Subic Bay Naval base, back when. As he told the story, everything (and I mean *everything*) that was remotely portable got taken. Stuff that wasn't got deliberately fucked up. Windows smashed out, plumbing wrecked, refrigerators with their coils stabbed, etc. etc. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at April 09, 2025 11:01 AM (W5ArC) 297

FL has cheap gas but the state also has the most miles of toll roads in the country.
The entire point of gas taxes is that they're supposed to be used to maintain the roads. People who drive on the roads buy gas, the tax fixes the roads they wear out by driving on them. That's why red-dyed (aka off-road or agricultural diesel) isn't taxed. Because those vehicles don't (or shouldn't) drive on the road. Neat, simple, effective, completely screwed up by environuts who want - and in some places got - a cut of the gas taxes to build bike paths that gas vehicles are forbidden from using.
