51 Here's what I think about tariffs, if anyone cares:

Americans have an attention span of just over four years. After that, everything resets.

We can forget a hundred years of stable tariff policy when a depression and a war hits and tariffs start hurting everyone.

We can forget why we dialed them back in those circumstances just as quickly.

And if Trump turns out to be right now, we'll forget about the postwar globalist religion of unrestricted free trade just as quickly as we swore our undying faith to it.

That was the all-time record 24 hour rainfall at GSP. 12.32".

We didn't get that much rain with Helene. However, we got high wind and heavy rain, which made that about the worst in my lifetime.

I'd say that these views are basically correct. How do I know? Because Bessent and Lutnick basically said this in interviews already.

I heard that Powell said that the Fed is not going to lower rates. He's making the same mistake that Roberts is by challenging Trump publicly. In Powell's case, Wall Street is going to do the talking for Trump, and force Powell's hand. We have trillions of short-term debt that Biden saddled Trump with before he walked out the door. This is how Trump takes care of it. Once rates get low enough, watch him offer 50- to 100-year bonds to lock in our debt.

Like I said earlier - Trump has a Treasury Secretary who was one of the best macro traders in the world - Bessent, Druckenmiller and Soros broke the Bank of England 30 years ago. I'm not betting against this guy.

It's being behaving normally every since. Don't know what the heck that was. I'm wondering if it was some electronic fault.

That was such an awesome episode, especially with the local sheriff whose constant obscenities were bleeped out, and the surprise Alex Trebek cameo. The character was so popular that they brought Jose Chung back for Carter's other series, "Millennium," in an episode called "Jose Chung's Doomsday Defense." In that one, Charles Nelson Reilly is teaching a class on writing and keeps getting death threats in the mail. When Frank Black asks him about it, Chung says "I know it can't be one of my students." Frank is puzzled. "Why?" "Because they actually did the required reading assignment." Good parody of Scientology in that one as well.

The personal income tax was suggested to stop the political wrangling and economic damage done by the Congress setting preferential tariff rates, it is one of those things that helped piss off part of the country. It was impossible until a constitutional amendment was passed. It was thought that it would be fairer to the general population and only affect the very rich.

It did change the relationship between the government and the voters, in that it moved the curating of international trade to get revenue and relating the general public as voters to please, to pretty much managing the working people as tax cows.

However, we can be of good cheer, only the tariffs that the US sets are actually taxes, the ones the other countries set are "industry and economic protection" and totes cool and permissible

To me, that's the biggest difference between Trump I and Trump II: Preparation. In 2016, Trump admitted he was surprised when he won. This time, he had a transition team in place in July (I think). This time Trump is prepared. He now knows what he didn't know before. He picked his team early. He's stuck be them all, except for Gaetz (whom I think was a ploy just to get Bondi, but what do I know?). Totally different vibe this time around. And Trump having zero fucks to give does make a difference, too.

If no arrests for anything serious are not forthcoming by the end of summer, then I'll start to bitch. Two-and-a-half months in is barely enough time to get rid of the deadwood, as we see. And the fucking judges with their 'nationwide injunctions' don't help. (Those judges need serious 'conflict of interest' investigations.)

To be fair, I have been one to make noises about retirement being a rather - maybe not *artificial* thing - but certainly extraordinary thing from a historical perspective. Imagine telling your how-many-greats grandparents about 150-200 years ago that their descendants would be able to save enough money and/or the national government would pay them enough so that they could spend the last couple decades of life ... not working. I've seen it said that 'retirement' in the days of belt-onions was your surviving children and grandchildren.

I'm saying arrests, not trials. There's a whole Epstein client list just waiting to be handcuffed and perp walked.

Because the arrests I want are for corruption (stealing from the US Treasury as well as judicial corruption) and sex crimes against children, the trials I'm talking about will take months if not a year. It's the arrests that matter at this point. There's so much low hanging fruit. Look at Stacey Abrams. Gets a $2B NGO grant from Biden at the last minute for an org which barely existed for a year and had $100 in assets. That kind of arrest. Trials will be later.

Right now, I want the fear of whatever they believe in in them. Scared. I want people to be paranoid about their impending arrests.

Do unto others as they did unto us.

239 Hubs & I both had 401k's. He retired but didn't draw from his 401. I kept working, until hubs required at-home care. Cheaper for me to quit, than to pay somebody to come in (more than I earned!) so here we are. Rolled both our plans into IRAs, so we have a local guy instead of distant rep to deal with. It's better IMO.

House is paid off. Cars are paid off. Great. So we lived on hub's SS until lately. Now? It's 10k/month memory care/skilled nursing for him. Depleting his life-savings rapidly, but that's what it's for. I guess.

Would've been *moar fun* to travel & stuff, but that's just not in the cards anymore.

240 Pookys Girl

It is an insane anime all about a girl, Mink, who is the child of a human male warrior and a female red dragon. And like all normal teen girls, she is obsessed over an idol singer named Dick Saucer. Another obsessed girl is Princess Vina.

And that is about the only 'normal' things about this series.

You've got a point, but even arrests have to be backed up with the confidence that they'll lead to prosecutions. Side note: this is why we need to restore, not ditch, the Humanities. I'm all for screwing a B.A., learn a trade, but we need to understand the context in which we are waging these wars.

Not quite. You can't give it away within five years of the time you apply. (e.g., you can't sign over all your stock to your kid and then claim to be destitute). Blowing it is okay, as long as it isn't trying to cover up a gift. But yeah, you have to be destitute before they'll cover anything.

There are some (temporary) exceptions to this -- they won't force your spouse out of the family home, but as soon as the spouse dies they'll grab it. With no spouse, they'll file against your estate for everything they spent.

That's how it is in my state, anyway. I think this varies in other states.

I've had the distinct displeasure of handling estates for a couple of deceased relatives lately, so I know more about this than I really want to.

That said, it's opened my eyes to the need for estate planning for my own estate.

311 There has been commentary to the effect that the DOJ has a special group that rushes to one of these incidents and puts pressure on the survivors to speak to the public with this sort of kum-by-yah, phony baloney , one big human family horseshit. Provided the victim is white and the perpetrator is black. I think it's called the Flying Narrative Preservation Squad.

Of course, many people achieve this level of cuckoldry on their own.

The cop responded about how when they call you a *n****r, you just work harder, be better than them. On a tv show from, what, 1990? At the time when I watched, I probably didn't even think about it. This is crazy. My widowed friend says the nursing home would have been free on Medicare, but in-home they would only pay for a weekly visit from an RN who would do minimal tasks (take blood, change IV and catheter). But the caregivers, which my friend decided to spring for, were all out of her pocket. No one would pay for that. The benefits were all calculated on helping nursing homes, not patients.

Posted by: Blonde Morticia at April 05, 2025 12:46 AM (3izae)

361 Another aspect that he didn't mention is that tanking the dollar makes it a) more expensive to buy foreign goods (just like tariffs) and b) makes it possible to pay off dollar-denominated debts with cheaper dollars.

Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at April 04, 2025 11:22 PM (W5ArC)

I dunno about that one. Inflation is planned because it allows paying todays debt with tommorows "worth less" dollars, which is why they've been doing it that way for so long. The trick is to make money worth less without making it worthless. Quite the head game, and a balancing act they're rather good at. But the one time they're wrong, our dollar collapses, so there's that.

A strong dollar that buys more would likely mean less dollars in circulation, actually making it harder to pay off the cumulative debt.

Whedon, though - this is a guy who shoved James Marsden up against a wall and screamed at him to stop being popular. That degree of weirdness coupled with his predatory behavior eventually reached the event horizon of sustainability as far as his career went.

I will give the guy credit for original thinking - Buffy was wonderfully subversive toward Hollywood horror tropes, and Angel was the closest towards a Byronic hero that Hollywood ever featured. And the narrative arc of Alexis Denisof in that series was nothing short of amazing - from clumsy and prim to one of the meanest, grimmest, take-no-prisoners champions ever to stand against the forces of darkness.

I was just looking at some final states. SpaceX hit a polar orbit pretty well, final inclination was 90.01 degrees. That's pretty good aiming.

The .01 means it was every so vanishingly retrograde. In a polar orbit, or very near to is, "grade" doesn't really mean much.

Well, after Alexander conquered Egypt in about 330 BC, and then Ptolemy, one of his successor generals (they all fought over who would control his empire after he died), took over Egypt. He thought it would be the easiest to defend, and he was right. The Ptolemy line (ending in Cleopatra, which was a Greek-Macedonian name) lasted until Rome took it over.

400 The reason Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts flew to the Czech Republic to spend a week at Leftist lawfare expert and Trump enemy Norm Eisen's house is that Eisen and Roberts needed to collude on new lawfare strategies targeting President Trump, and they believe that doing so outside of the borders of the United States immunizes them from American law and any FOIA filings asking Roberts to account for his conduct.

I'd bet any amount of money I have that John Roberts has been colluding with Judge Boasberg, either directly, or indirectly through Norm Eisen.

Trump needs to stop cooperating with the lower courts, and simply assert that they have no jurisdiction over him.

Princess Vina is "normal?" She's half-human, half-slime. Like, the king got it on with a literal puddle of goo.

That got me added to a chat group of all the authors from the first and second anthology, not hacks like me. These are real authors who make their living, or at least a significant portion of it, from writing. One of them posted a paragraph he had written about burning bodies smelling appetizing and asked "too far?" Other members of the chat responded by posting paragraphs on the same or similar topics, and it wound up on cannibalism. I said "What's the assignment? Just write a paragraph on cannibalism?" This was my entry: 1/2

The body was that of a young girl, maybe 20, blond and covered in tattoos that his rational mind recognized as the work of a supremely talented artist. “I wonder if tattoo ink is poisonous?” he thought as he fell on her, his teeth flashing in the torchlight."

458 Weirddave, that was nice writing, waiting for Cannibal Bob to weigh in.

Braenyard, thanks for the James Woods posts, I enjoy them.

Skip, do you have to work this weekend?

459 My Dad is Trustee, I'm the successor. I'm thinking he may be able to add me as a Trustee, seems the only other option is to have him declared incompetent which I don't want to do. He's frustrated at lack of control of anything and aware enough I don't want to do that to him in his last semi-competent days.

Rough

Old Mama had no problem putting Old Papa's things in trust with me as Trustee. She didn't want to manage any damn thing.

Co-trustee seems the best option, with the legalism of "and' or "or". Try for the "or".

Makes a difference.

466 Good evening, WD and others.
I just completed my tax calculations. Can anyone tell me why I should pay?
Other than they would shoot me, otherwise.

Tax neutral this year. We don't owe "them", "they" don't owe us. Nice being retired. Heh.
