Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Tariffs: Good, Bad, Or Indifferent? The hell if I know! But the volume of nonsense coming from people who can't balance a checkbook and don't understand even the most basic economic laws is getting hard to tolerate. Of course, some of it is reflexive Trump-Hate, and some of it is typical Democrat resistance to anything a Republican does. It is important to separate the geopolitical effects of tariffs from the straight economic effects. Those economic effects are immensely complicated, and back-of-the-envelope analyses from journalism majors is of limited utility. Tariffs and market share do not have a one-to-one correspondence. For instance, if we place a 10% tariff on assless chaps from Canada, that doesn't necessarily mean a 10% reduction in domestic demand for that product. They might be the best assless chaps in the world and are highly sought after, so the reduction in demand might be much smaller than 10% (inelastic demand). Or they may be the worst assless chaps available, in which case an 10% increase in their price might destroy their market share (elastic demand). Will domestic manufacturers of assless chaps pick up that demand? Probably, but maybe Croatian assless chaps are also quite good, and they get some of the demand. The point is that economic changes are not static. There are millions of individual decisions that go into into economic activity (Adam Smith's "Invisible Hand"), and they change every day, so trying to predict outcomes is an exercise in futility. What is more important in the long term is the profound change in our trade policy. Gone (I hope) are the days of free trade for our "trading partners" and regulated trade for us. Take a look at the graphic and you will see some startling disparities, and that is even after the U.S. tariffs are increased! Obviously this chart is incomplete, and leaves lots of questions, including how "currency manipulation and trade barriers" is calculated. And...Average tariffs on all products? Highest tariffs? Are the tariffs weighted by trade value? But President Trump's strategy is already showing some success. Mexico is negotiating; Israel has cut all tariffs to zero; India and Vietnam are considering cutting tariffs.![]() [click for a larger version] The goal of President Trump's tariffs is to drive manufacturing back to America, and stop the funding of foreign economies by American consumers. Increasing the cost of imports will push demand to domestic production. That's basic economics. Can it be done without economic dislocation in the world markets and the accompanying possibility of recession? Maybe... Maybe not. But if, at the end we get a revitalized American economy with more manufacturing and a more equitable trade system, the the short-term pain will be worth it. Nobody knows how this is going to progress, because no major country has shifted its trade policies so comprehensively and so quickly. And the 20-something journalism majors who confidently write about this complex economic and geopolitical issue can be ignored. They simply don't have any idea what the f*ck they are writing. Are there rational criticisms of President Trump? Absolutely. I think his communication with the American people has been lacking. I hope that in the near future he lays out his plans, explains the potential downside, and more importantly explains the tremendous upside of an all-encompassing trade policy that favors America over all other nations. That means more good jobs, more domestic product demand, more tax revenue for the Leviathan, and an American economy that is insulated from the depredations of foreign governments that absolutely do not have the best interests of America in mind. As for those tariffs on uninhabited islands-- I wouldn't be surprised that those places show up in the Treasury and Customs databases as places where items are shipped from destined to those 150 year old Social Security recipients to avoid duties or just plain ol' smuggling. I agree with this completely, and have been saying the same thing. Not using the Oval Office to address the American People was an unnecessary flaw in his first time, and I still hope he can realize why that has to be done. This was one of the greatest strengths of the Reagan Presidency; he understood how to talk to the people directly. FDR’s widespread popularity can be traced directly to his radio “fireside chats”, which the entire country listened to. In hard times when much is changing, the power of direct communication is one of the greatest tools a President has. President Trump, please use it! Fair, wise or not. There are a lot of people depending on their 401k’s for retirement or living off them as we speak. While they’ve experienced monumental gains due to the market they’ve also been hit by inflation and high prices. Many of these people are not very sophisticated and are invested in index funds. At the moment they’re seeing their financial security take a serious hit.
I suppose you can write this off and tell people to take the long view. That’s usually wise advice. But remember many people’s timelines and situations are different. Thus far the explanations have been lacking. The president and his cabinet have spent more time answering the media and their critics, than helping to calm his supporters nerves. I would agree that’s a substantial mistake and one that needs to be addressed. Posted by: Marcus T at April 06, 2025 12:19 PM (05Q08) 31

So we came close to destroying our currency with infinite dollars and insane "Modern Monetary Theory" that has already yielded high inflation, but could get out of control if we don't stop all the grifters and criminals. Posted by: Oddbob at A It’s as they say, nuanced. 300% kicks in at a certain threshold. I don’t remember the numbers but it’s a lot of fair before that tariff is applied. And it is almost never met. The real fuckery in Canada is domestic production incentives. The govt controls what farmers can and can’t produce. And that price manipulation is what keeps American goods out. Also domestic distributors are incentivized by the govt to buy domestic product. It’s not technically a tariff but it’s as bad. Posted by: Its Go Time Donald at April 06, 2025 12:21 PM (Jay38) 36

I watched in the 70's as the jobs got exported; wages were a big reason but supply chain unreliability has always been overlooked. Unions would "wildcat" strike or workers would just not show up and promised goods could not be delivered. Okay, but if your net worth last week was $75M and this week is millions less, you feel that, esp when you have things set up in different areas and live off interest, etc. Selling in a panic isn’t great, obviously, but pretending that isn’t a real loss also isn’t accurate.

And I’ve never lost money either. I honestly don’t care what happened last week. I won’t need this money for at least another 5-7 years.m when I plan to retire. Which means in 4-5 years I’ll start restructuring my investments into less risky instruments. Until then, short term means nothing to me. I think we were headed for big trouble one way or another, economically speaking. Trump is willing, it seems, to rip some bandaids off and start stitching (pardon the poor metaphor).
If your month-to-month budget has significant stock market exposure, you are already at-risk due to an almost uncountable number of unpredictable causes of significant and immediate stock price decline. The left would be fine with "Don't let that big, bad, old stock market mistreat you. Let the fed.gov take over your portfolio and guarantee you steady income." That is a real concern. I see trade analogous to college. Up until 5ish years ago what was the conventional wisdom? Everyone has to go to college. That was just what you did. Questioning it was seen as being Anti-EduCaTiOn.
Nobody asked is college really the answer for everyone? Is it worth the money? Are there better options for people working in trades? That was not allowed. Same with trade. The conventional wisdom has been trade is good. Period. Anyone who questions it is a crazy person. Well turns out college isn’t for everyone after all. And trade at all costs is a stupid idea. But there are people invested in both the college industrial complex and the free trade system that will scream the loudest to keep the old system in place. Targeted tariffs whose goal is to eliminate tariffs in other countries can make sense. The problem is that entire manufacturing sectors in the US will become dependent on them and come to expect them. Hello, auto and steel manufacturers. For that reason, once imposed, tariffs are VERY difficult to get rid of.
Trump's tariffs are long overdue when other countries abuse the privilege of trading with us, but I hope he has a plan to get rid of them once he's successful in lowering tariffs with other countries. Posted by: Archimedes at April 06, 2025 12:40 PM (xCA6C) 85

I do not think that a tariff floor of 10% for any country is an issue. If nothing else it may help pay for the customs inspection which every country does and should have. Not that they don't or may not have other means to pay for the inspections. It is just that 10% is petty.
Vietnam has suggested Zero... Trump should suggest that 10% is fair for both countries as nominal to cover costs. Setting the "reciprocal" tariffs at about half what other countries is underwhelming if intended to truly be "reciprocal". I think the effects are two-fold - - Shock to the country that had effectively ZERO tariffs on their import here. - Detractors get to set their hair fire due to the sudden harsh rise and the obvious counter is, "Oh, 25% no good, so you think that 50% would be more fair?" "No?" But, that is what they charge us... Anyone who objects is exposed as anti-American, stupid, or both. Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at April 06, 2025 12:53 PM (/lPRQ) 115

DataRepublican has some thoughts on what Open Trade promised, and what it delivered
"[O]ne-way free trade functions economically in the same way open borders do. Yes, both hollow out the domestic working class: manufacturing jobs vanish just as illegal immigration erodes wages and job availability. But in return, cheap goods and services flood in, lowering consumer prices. "These lower prices become the mechanism by which a different kind of economy is built, one optimized for high-level abstraction. Think: professional services, finance, tech, and elite-tier automated manufacturing. The bet is that the U.S. can climb the value chain while letting lower-tier production happen elsewhere. "Tariffs imposed by other countries aren't seen as a threat. In fact, they're framed as "shooting themselves in their foot." Because, these countries are anchoring themselves to low-margin industries, while the U.S. orients toward capital-intensive, post-industrial domains. "This is why globalists aggressively defend the current trade regime. We keep our markets open, even when others don't, because that asymmetry accelerates the shift to a high-abstraction economy." The cost is real[ . . . ] Posted by: Kindltot at April 06, 2025 12:58 PM (D7oie) 126

The simpler way to look at this is the leftists profit. The Oligarchs make money off of arbitrage, early access to inflated capital, and cheap labor. The governing class gets to administrate all of this, and the welfare given to the illegals coming in, and then jump to NGOs that pay them to do nothing...not even the paper pushing they did when working for the government. And they harvest the votes of the illegals and the dependent class The dependent class then gets welfare. Tariffs are essentially external sales taxes. I think every state has its own sales tax, so this isn't that much different.
It's actually better than a sales tax from a consumer standpoint because you can avoid it just by buying American stuff. French wine tariff too much? Buy domestic. Same for beer, or anything else. Essentially, the MSM is presenting the controversial issues as a personal attack on the world and the nation by "Donald Trump" and not as policy duly based on established law, precedent, judicial, and congressional endorsement. For Vietnam 2022, the most recent year I could find:

[No specific list but on e.g. 'Food' -- USA in 90% nations with Asian countries at 135% -- I suspect it's mainly over e.g. rice as an important national food security protection] The simple average tariff across all products was 3.71 percent. The trade weighted average tariff was 1.07 percent. The total duty free imports in thousands of US dollars were 281,024,340.58 and duty free tariff line items share was 59.58 percent. Top five countries to which Vietnam exported in 2022 are below, along with the percent of total exports that went to that country: 1. I also hate the """Conservatives""" saying tariffs are inflationary. No, they are not. They are a tax. Taxes are not inflationary, that actually constrict economic growth. Inflation is exclusively monetary.
Commodities also do not cause inflation. They can cause price rises due to materials costs rising, but that is not inflation. As prices rise, demand falls and if it's a major commodity like oil, you can get a recession. I have to say I've learned a lot about fake conservatives thanks to Trump, and also how many economists are full of crap and don't even know who markets and money work. Irrational exuberance currently seen in markets is all fake. speculators, cheats are the ones who are crying.
That's not true. Lots of ordinary people invest. Not a lot but they invest. Since it's something they do at the margins of their personal economy they may not fully understand things. They thought they were in something uber-safe and it's down. I was pretty successful with lunatic investing when I was young. Made a pretty good bit, the money wasn't real to me so I made risky - but profitable - investments. Then 1987 happened. All of a sudden the money was really fucking real. I started trying to protect it. Lost most of it. Fortunately, I was young, single, and employed which is the best time to learn that lesson. Its a cherry picked stat... EVERYONE will have a base 10% Tariff, UNLESS there is a specific rate put on them... its the base rate.
------ Yes, that show the W.H. and Trump staff didn't check their automatic list for uninhabited territories but that have a State Dept. 'country code' [or whatever] and that does not inspire confidence. BTW, none of the Trump 'reciprocal' tariffs are based on actual tariffs e.g. Vietnam does not charge 96% tariffs on every US-made/produced good imported there. It's not even based fully on the trade deficits as countries with surpluses are being hit with the 10% too. Posted by: andycanuck (/tzYP) at April 06, 2025 01:30 PM (/tzYP) 202

Gone are the days of a shared goal: American prosperity and potential.
One side wants freedom. Work hard, innovate, create, save. The other wants control over every aspect of your life from the car you drive, the food you eat and where you are allowed to live. - I’m not saying a 4000 sq ft home is better than a 1000 sq ft home. You’re right bigger house doesn’t mean better life. But it’s small stuff. Like does your home have a dishwasher? Virtually every American does. In Europe? Kind of a luxury. The big one is cars. Owning a car in the US is basically a birthright. In Europe it’s also kind of a luxury. POTUS Trump is correct in resetting trade to equity. Unequal tariffs by foreign countries creates an inbalance of revenue favoring those foreign countries.
That said, there are some foreign tariffs that are imposed to nurture domestic development to ensure national sovereignty necessary for national survival. The U.S. has ignored economic national security long enough! It is time for a reset. This is unchartered territory, which is why the WSJ and the financial markets in their incredible ignorance are anxious. The U.S. financial superiority has been abused enough. The pendulum is now swinging the other way. Posted by: john at April 06, 2025 01:52 PM (nEWxZ) 260

I’m for tariffs on a country like China because of geopolitical concerns. But not wholesale across the board. Many of the cars assembled in the us will still have tariffs.
Mercedes for example manufactures some models in Alabama, but enough components come from Germany that it still gets hit. Also, there is an arbitrage that means the Americans cars that escape tariffs will still see price increases. If your competition is forced to raise, their price 25%, you can now comfortably raise the price of your models another worry about the competition. When the barriers to building a new generation of nuclear plants were relaxed (both licensing and economic) under the Obama administration, a “nuclear renaissance” was widely declared. It cratered almost immediately. One problem was the financial incentives were heavily weighted towards the first project or two that was approved, and fell off rapidly afterwards. Another problem was that the First of a Kind engineering problems that were assumed to have been solved by the Chinese construction of AP1000s did not translate to US construction.
By far the biggest problem in building new nuclear plants (and is still with us today) was the lack of steel mills and foundries that could make and machine the necessary forgings for pressure vessels and steam generators. Japan could provide them, but with lead times of years. The bottleneck in production of critical components put huge economic pressure on the construction schedules, and all but one or possibly two projects were indefinitely postponed. Critical industries, and the lack thereof, echo throughout the economy. It’s not *just* steel, it’s what we can’t build without it. It really is national security. It wasn't Smoot-Hawley it was all the tariffs that followed.

Posted by: Advo === We go to a lake in the high Sierras every summer. It supplies hydro electric power and the pipes feeding the generators have a SWASTIKA stamp because only they could provide the high quality steel for the high pressures at the time in the early mid 30s. 80+ years and they are still working. The greedheads amaze me.
"I'm losing a lot of money... wah, wah...". People complain that everything is going to shit but don't touch my virtual wallet. That's not real money folks. Not based on value anyway. If you are that freaked out about your invisible pile of cash taking a hit you should consider using it to obtain things of real value. It's up to you you detriment what they are but relying on a 401K to be your only investment is leaving you to just blow in the wind. Posted by: pawn at April 06, 2025 02:19 PM (QB+5g) 320
reciprocal tariffs are not the repeat of Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act.
Posted by: AZ deplorable moron at April 06, 2025 02:12 PM (ZLe6e) ************************************** These tariffs aren't reciprocal, even aside from the 10% minimum rate. They appear to have been created by people operating under the logic that every pair of countries should have zero net exports with each other. Countries that have a trade deficit with the United States still have a 10% tariff imposed on them. Countries with no tariffs on imports from the United States and that happen to have a trade surplus with the United States have higher than 10% tariffs imposed on them. ' but they also force dollarization and a reduction in Treasury rates, which is absolutely necessary for us to refinance our debt.' Doesn't that depend on the Fed Chairman who might decide that he doesn't want to lower rates? Posted by: Dr. Claw at April 06, 2025 02:21 PM (3wi/L) 322

It’s in our human nature to be reactionary, especially when we perceive our survival is threatened. But let’s try to un-enslave ourselves from our limbic systems and fire up the more advanced areas of our brain. A good start would be to remember that Trump and his financial advisors have wargamed all of this. They are Very Stable Geniuses in the world of finance, so you know, maybe we should all calm our tits for a moment. This comment is not directed to you specifically, I’m just contemplating the angst of the moment. Posted by: kallisto at April 06, 2025 02:22 PM (teuEU) 323
The European appliances and toilet fixtures are crap. They do have good flushing volumes as a rule, so that's a good thing.

Had the UAW had its way, they would have taxed Japanese imports out of business. And we’d be stuck big Big 3 crap that falls apart.
The traditional big 3 companies, ford GM and Chrysler are crap products l Posted by: Maroon The Big 3 had significant ownership of the Jap big three since end of WWII. Spoils and all that. The were going to make either way. Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at April 06, 2025 02:47 PM (/lPRQ) 326
This all reminds me of an excellent series I have watched on YouTube. It's called War Factories. The premise is wars (think WWII) aren't won just because of bullets, bombs, hand grenades, etc. Wars are won because the USA out produced the Axis powers. Factories!

I think his communication with the American people has been lacking. I hope that in the near future he lays out his plans, explains the potential downside, and more importantly explains the tremendous upside of an all-encompassing trade policy that favors America over all other nations.
- CBD Agreed. Trump explained a little in his Congressional speech, he warned the farmers to start growing for the American market for a reason, but it's not the real detail needed. He likes to break out charts and graphs, a lot. Do an oval office Ross Perot type infomercial to explain to the American people what the overall plan is, explain why this is so important not just to the economy but also to the financial health of the U.S. government. It's fine to send out subordinates to do the news rounds but that is nowhere near the audience a presidential speech gets. Posted by: SpeakingOf at April 06, 2025 03:52 PM (6ydKt) 328
I haven’t lost a dime. Know why? Because I haven’t sold anything.
Posted by: Its Go Time Donald at April 06, 2025 12:23 PM (Jay3 Okay, but if your net worth last week was $75M and this week is millions less, you feel that, esp when you have things set up in different areas and live off interest, etc. Selling in a panic isn’t great, obviously, but pretending that isn’t a real loss also isn’t accurate.
