Second Harvest Heartland defended its executive compensation and financial stewardship, but some legislators are concerned by the "out of control" salaries at nonprofits requesting public dollars.
Minnesota's hunger crisis is growing--and apparently so is the appetite for big executive pay at one of the state's top food nonprofits.
Now? Oh right, this is Communist-Held Minnesota, which, let's face it, we should just make officially part of Canada already.
Allison O'Toole, CEO of Second Harvest Heartland, earned $721,000 in total compensation in 2022--even as the nonprofit has lobbied for taxpayer funding and warned of rising hunger across Minnesota, where 26% of households with children are food insecure, according to its own research. Now, as O'Toole steps down after six years at the helm, lawmakers are raising questions.
Rep. Pam Altendorf, R-Red Wing, told Alpha News that O'Toole's salary issue first surfaced during a recent "food day" at the Capitol, when food shelf representatives, including O'Toole, testified before the House Children and Families Committee. "Rep. Bjorn Olson pulled the 990 [tax form] and shared Allison O'Toole's salary with our committee members right before she testified," Altendorf said. "That's when the questions started." Rep. Marion Rarick, R-Maple Lake, later raised the issue during a March 17 House committee hearing where a DFL lawmaker questioned why a GOP bill was reducing funding for Second Harvest Heartland in a proposed agriculture budget. "It looks like the base funding for Second Harvest Heartland is $3.4 million and you reduce it by $900,000 in both the first biennium and the tails," said Rep. Zack Stephenson, DFL-Coon Rapids. But Rarick said she thinks the organization "can handle it." "They do have a $260 million, that's their gross revenue," she said during the hearing. "What's even more interesting, I think, is that their CEO, their top person, makes $721,000. Yeah, $721,000 is the top person ... and they have 10 people that make more than the governor, which is more than $150,000. So that's well over $2.6 million in their highest-paid people." About a week after the salary figures were brought up at the committee hearing, Second Harvest announced O'Toole's resignation. ... Altendorf also pointed to what she sees as a deeper issue. She says the nonprofit hired a "voter engagement coordinator" in 2024 to conduct get-out-the-vote efforts--something she calls "a huge conflict of interest" for an organization receiving taxpayer dollars. "The public is waking up to the money funneling system happening within the Minnesota state government," Altendorf said. "And I'm hearing loud and clear--taxpayers have had enough."

I've got no problem with a nonprofit paying their executives obscenely large salaries. Often the value of those executives is in their ability to raise money (including from high net worth donors) for the organization's mission.
If I don't agree with the mission, or if I think the money's going other places, all good. I won't donate.
When those executives get obscene salaries to raise money by coordinating with the people who steal it from my paychecks, that's a whole different story.

I still get shocked by grocery prices. I am used to groceries being just a few percent of my annual expenses, so even though I had and have the flex in my budget that I could spend way more I've had a hard time doing it and just buy cheap stuff.
But even though I see these prices and think "OUCH", there are so many programs to help feed the poor that I struggle to believe that anyone who is willing to fill out the forms and stand in line at a food bank has to be food insecure. I think the kids are food insecure if mom or dad blows all the money on drugs and booze.

Agreed. While I know there good hearted people genuinely trying to help others and we should all encourage that, I believe they are in a tiny minority of the people at the top ranks in the non profit world.

- No gov. funding of any "NGO". You want a charity, use your own money.
- No non-profits. Pay taxes. All taxes including property taxes.
- No tax deductions for donations. You want to donate money? donate your own money and not taxpayers.
- To use the term "charity," all people working there must make minimum wage. They want to be charitable? well start by donating your time.
- No gov. funding of any "NGO". You want a charity, use your own money.
- No non-profits. Pay taxes. All taxes including property taxes.

If you exempt churches from taxes, then you get non profits dressed up as churches to get around their new taxable status. If you allow govt to tax churches though, then you risk them being taxed out of existence by a coalition of weirdos aka Dems that hate Judaism and Christianity but love Islam.
Ultimately, I think it is a fixable dilemma but requires a delicate touch using the ministerial exception jurisprudence--churches do not pay taxes on income directly from ministering to their religion but any ancillary activities are taxed.
Might take caps on salary etc. as well.

If you exempt churches from taxes, then you get non profits dressed up as churches to get around their new taxable status. If you allow govt to tax churches though, then you risk them being taxed out of existence by a coalition of weirdos aka Dems that hate Judaism and Christianity but love Islam.
Ultimately, I think it is a fixable dilemma but requires a delicate touch using the ministerial exception jurisprudence--churches do not pay taxes on income directly from ministering to their religion but any ancillary activities are taxed.
Might take caps on salary etc. as well.

Part of the problem is purchasing/receiving donations of high carb foods. Most food banks deal with shelf stable product, and if the SNAP recipient doesn't use their benefits to purchase fresh food (veg, fruit, meat, dairy) then they consume primarily high carbohydrate, processed foods. They don't exercise, they don't drink water, they don't focus on healthy eating. And frankly, that is on them because there is easy access to information about good nutrition, cooking, exercise, etc. The old EBT/welfare requirements prohibited the purchase of junk food, sodas, liquor and cigarettes, but that changed under Obama, I think.

My wife and I give money to our church and to the Lorton Community Action Center. I know the former is generally a good steward because I know what the people are paid. I checked the latter, and their compensation seems to be within reason, so I'll keep giving to them.
The Salvation Army has yet to apologize for their foray into woke, so they can KMA.

I favor the other direction.
If we must have welfare make it as basic as possible. You'll get your raw chicken, rice, and a veggie. Go cook it yourself. If you want doritos or hohos well...get a job.
And welfare recipients should have to work. Even if it is merely counting pieces of litter on the urban streets they live on. You only get your welfare when you clock in and spend 8 hours.

the priest in my town drove a Cadillac. There were very few Caddys in my town, the mayor, and maybe a Dr. or two. But the priest who took a "vow of poverty" had a new one every two years. I was probably 10 and understood that this was a problem. Asshole passed a basket around every Sunday for people to toss quarters in so he could have leather seats.

There are religious orders that take such vows, and priests within those orders, but normal ("secular") priests are allowed to have money and hobbies and stuff.

There is no reason whatsoever that anyone would have to go hungry unless it was intentional withholding of food and the need for NGO food banks
Our tax money already provides benefits for food. Schools provide free breakfasts and lunches.
I concede that maybe those that may require food need to be educated on how to get the government benefits or how to use it if they already have it.
I guess there are also some people who are too proud to get on 'welfare' but have no problem going to those non governmental food banks.

People try to sue Old Scratch or the Lord on occasion and the quickest way to dismiss such cases is to claim no jurisdiction over the case.

He claimed that because the Pope claimed to be the sole agent of the almighty, that meant that he could sue the Catholic Church as an agent of the defendant, the Lord. Oh, this church also had an orphanage where they took kids from the cities and sent them to the suburban public school to deal drugs.

Monday morning put on suit and took a copy of my resume and references, drove across town to the Ford Aerospace office were they advertising a software job for which I wasn't qualified .
Politely asked receptionist if it would be possible to speak with hiring manager to inquire about that opening. She was a bit taken aback, but impressed by my moxie -- arranged it. I cannot sell shit, but on that day I sold the shit out of myself. The manager was impressed, and offered me a more obscure software job for which I'd have to teach myself.
