Trump Announces "Liberation Day" Tariffs; Will Calculate the Direct Tariffs and Non-Monetary Barriers to Entry Foreign Countries Impose on Us and Slap Them Each With Reciprocal Tariffs Equalling About Half of Their Own Tariff Level

President Donald Trump is set to announce his decision on the implementation of an array of new tariffs Wednesday as some of the tariffs he has already announced will take effect. Trump has dubbed Wednesday "Liberation Day" and is planning an event at the White House's Rose Garden to unveil his decision on broader tariffs. Trump announced tariffs on Mexico and Canada earlier in his administration, but agreed to postpone both following negotiations with the leaders of those countries that led to agreements to bolster border security. Each tariff adds 25% on goods from the respective country. While those tariffs were part of border security negotiations, Trump is expected to unveil broader tariffs to achieve his stated goal of rebalancing American global trade. On Tuesday, he received reports from the Treasury, Commerce Department, and Office of the Trade Representative on possible tariffs and their potential impacts, though he reportedly has already made up his mind on what to implement. "I've settled, yeah," he told the The Wall Street Journal on Monday. Ahead of the Rose Garden event, moreover, he unveiled a 25% tariff on auto imports that earned praise from union workers, including from United Auto Workers (UAW) leaders who opposed his candidacy. Trump notably feuded with UAW President Shawn Fain during the election, but Fain had high praise for the commander-in-chief after the auto tariffs. "We applaud the Trump administration for stepping up to end the free trade disaster that has devastated working-class communities for decades," Fain said. "Ending the race to the bottom in the auto industry starts with fixing our broken trade deals, and the Trump administration has made history with today's actions." Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs are expected to go much broader, though the details remain unclear as of press time and interested parties are expected to push for limited exemptions all the way to the deadline. The point of conjecture at present is whether Trump will announce an across-the-board 20% tariff on all foreign imports, with few if any exceptions, or whether he will opt for a more targeted, reciprocal tariff policy of matching each nation's respective rates and negotiating on an individual basis.

No. NAFTA gave favorable trading positions to Mexico and Canada. Trump renegotiated it with USMCA. Both agreements still have a shit ton of tariffs and both protect Mexican and Canadian industries at the expense of American industries.

Based on what will count as a tariff, this is unlikely. Keep in mind when the WTO ruled against the US cotton subsidies as protectionist a while back, Farm Bill politics prevented immediate action so the US subsidized Brazilian farmers to avoid IP protections being removed.

I rarely wear makeup either, but I went to the makeup place in a department store the other day because I had a luncheon engagement with a friend I hadn't seen in some time and wanted to look nice. I had a wonderful conversation with a nice lady who worked in the makeup section who was wearing cross earrings. She told me how important her RC faith is to her and she gave me a name of a family member to pray for. It was a very nice experience, except there was some picture advertising makeup with some guy in a beard wearing a kimono type thing. There were actual woman in the picture with him. I have a feeling that the makeup lady working there probably thinks fake transgender model is ludicrous as well.

A 25% tax on all imported cars (instantly) is going to wreck a lot of american jobs also. An example, Mercedes has factories here, but because they arent 100% assembled here, I believe all of them face these tariffs . That effects parts and repairs for consumers, American dealerships, mechanics, etc.
It just really seems a sop to the UAW, which is why they are so happy about it.

I was talking about this earlier. I understand why the policy exists -- Dept of Agg started heavily subsidizing food and aiming for over production after the Dust Bowl, Great Depression, and food shortages in Europe during WWII scared the shit out of politicians.
So we have excess food every year. Which we dump in the third world as "charity" to keep food prices high enough for farmers to make money in the US.

A 25% tax on all imported cars (instantly) is going to wreck a lot of american jobs also. An example, Mercedes has factories here, but because they arent 100% assembled here, I believe all of them face these tariffs . That effects parts and repairs for consumers, American dealerships, mechanics, etc.
It just really seems a sop to the UAW, which is why they are so happy about it.

I play around with AI a lot. And I can't tell you how many people have tried to sell me on AI legal products. And I'm "well, is it 100% accurate?" "no, nothing ever is."
Yeah, then its worse than useless to me. If *I* fuck something up, or if a junior attorney fucks something up, I'll be very likely to spot that.
If AI fabricates case law, or misquotes the case in question, or uses something out of context, or is not applying the right law, how would I ever catch that unless I do all the research myself, in which case, how is AI helping me at all here?

But also, even if the trade off is losing Mercedes jobs but adding more Ford jobs (or even keeping Ford jobs on level), but the profits from the sales at least nominally stay in the US, and the entire supply chain in the US continues to exist and isn't offshored, isn't that a better deal than what currently exists?

I don't know that I'd go that far. It's important to note that AI is constrained in ways that organic intelligence isn't. The developers decide what things are not permitted to be considered... so they're not. Things like men/women have differing strengths/weaknesses.
Those constraints could be changed.

Why? Because the US dollar strengthened as a result against competing currencies -- presumably the reduction in or shortage of dollars going overseas decreased, increasing foreign demand for them and driving up the price of the USD relative to those other currencies.
The stronger dollar means more buying power vis-a-vis for an imports, thus offsetting the predicted Doomsday inflation.

If I'm putting it as simplistically as possible (and I am), that's the reason to run a trade deficit. It's an interest free loan. Use sparingly.
In general you should be getting more from trade partners and client states than vice versa. If you're not, it's time to reevaluate those deals, and take a good hard look at any of your "friends" who might be skimming those deals.

BRICS doesn't have to play games with the dollar or replace it to win. They can just block the US from using the dollar as a weapon against them by refusing dollars, upon which they just trade with other moneys.

Good point that needs addressing but trade surpluses/deficits aren't that -- Liechtenstein and the USA not having the exact same trade with each other isn't one country stealing from another.

That's easily solved. Finding pirates was always a moneymaker in the past. You just charge a fee when you drive off pirates or recapture ships and goods. You build some specialized ships and marines to after the pirate nests instead of sail an aircraft carrier group back and forth.
