Trump Announces "Liberation Day" Tariffs; Will Calculate the Direct Tariffs and Non-Monetary Barriers to Entry Foreign Countries Impose on Us and Slap Them Each With Reciprocal Tariffs Equalling About Half of Their Own Tariff Level

reciprocaltariffs.jpg
President Trump displays a chart showing foreign countries'
tariffs on US goods, contrasted with the reciprocal tariffs he
proposes to impose on those countries. In most cases, his
reciprocal tariffs are about half the level of the foreign countries'
tariffs on US goods.

He's speaking now in the Rose Garden. Video below.

President Donald Trump is set to announce his decision on the implementation of an array of new tariffs Wednesday as some of the tariffs he has already announced will take effect. Trump has dubbed Wednesday "Liberation Day" and is planning an event at the White House's Rose Garden to unveil his decision on broader tariffs.

Trump announced tariffs on Mexico and Canada earlier in his administration, but agreed to postpone both following negotiations with the leaders of those countries that led to agreements to bolster border security. Each tariff adds 25% on goods from the respective country. While those tariffs were part of border security negotiations, Trump is expected to unveil broader tariffs to achieve his stated goal of rebalancing American global trade.

On Tuesday, he received reports from the Treasury, Commerce Department, and Office of the Trade Representative on possible tariffs and their potential impacts, though he reportedly has already made up his mind on what to implement. "I've settled, yeah," he told the The Wall Street Journal on Monday.

Ahead of the Rose Garden event, moreover, he unveiled a 25% tariff on auto imports that earned praise from union workers, including from United Auto Workers (UAW) leaders who opposed his candidacy. Trump notably feuded with UAW President Shawn Fain during the election, but Fain had high praise for the commander-in-chief after the auto tariffs.

"We applaud the Trump administration for stepping up to end the free trade disaster that has devastated working-class communities for decades," Fain said. "Ending the race to the bottom in the auto industry starts with fixing our broken trade deals, and the Trump administration has made history with today's actions."

Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs are expected to go much broader, though the details remain unclear as of press time and interested parties are expected to push for limited exemptions all the way to the deadline.

The point of conjecture at present is whether Trump will announce an across-the-board 20% tariff on all foreign imports, with few if any exceptions, or whether he will opt for a more targeted, reciprocal tariff policy of matching each nation's respective rates and negotiating on an individual basis.

96 The people on the Left who oppose tariffs don't seem to understand that the ultimate consequence of tariffs is a huge increase is revenue for the Federal Government. The Left in every other instance SUPPORTS increasing federal revenue -- e.g. things like increasing income taxes. And with that increased federal revenue, income taxes for the lower/working classes do not need to be raised, and in fact can be lowered. Which you think the Left would like, because it benefits poor people.

But no. If Trump supports it, we oppose it. The end. Knee=jerk oppositionism.

Yeah, our current world crop of western 'elites' are pretty bad. I'm sure back in WWII and later Canadian leaders grumbled at the drink bar before bedtime about Americans being pushy and whatever, but incontestably Canada must go along with what the US wants, they aren't big enough and far enough away to go their own way. Nobody was gonna be fooled, and rushing off to the EU was pathetic.

194 Good job on Trump and the Trump team for setting forth their argument the right way: in the context of foreign tariffs and limits on trade.

It leaves the door open to an ultimate lowering of tariffs, which may be the point---to get to settlements that treat USA buyers and sellers fairly.

That chart is perfect. (And hopefully defensible when it comes to the calculations.)

A 25% tax on all imported cars (instantly) is going to wreck a lot of american jobs also. An example, Mercedes has factories here, but because they arent 100% assembled here, I believe all of them face these tariffs . That effects parts and repairs for consumers, American dealerships, mechanics, etc.

It just really seems a sop to the UAW, which is why they are so happy about it.

309 Canada is an important market for U.S. dairy products, second only to Mexico. From 2010 to 2021, total dairy exports from the United States to Canada, adjusted for inflation, rose 48 percent from $466.4 million in 2010 to $691.5 million in 2021. Canada’s proximity to the United States favors imports such as fluid milk, cheese, and infant formula, among others. Supplemental imports of fluid milk, butter, and butterfat in addition to cheese and cream from the United States often meet the shortfall in Canada’s production. By value, infant formula has been the top U.S. dairy product exported to Canada, accounting for $151.3 million in 2021 and representing 22 percent of the total. Coming in second, the combined export value of fluid milk, cream, and milk-based drinks reached $128.5 million in 2021—an inflation-adjusted increase of $85.2 million from 2010. U.S. exports of cheese to Canada have grown by 12 percent to $68.1 million in 2021. U.S. product groups such as butter and butterfat products; fluid milk, cream, and milk-based drinks; cheese; and whey products continue to gain popularity among Canadian buyers.

To the detriment of everyone.

I was talking about this earlier. I understand why the policy exists -- Dept of Agg started heavily subsidizing food and aiming for over production after the Dust Bowl, Great Depression, and food shortages in Europe during WWII scared the shit out of politicians.

So we have excess food every year. Which we dump in the third world as "charity" to keep food prices high enough for farmers to make money in the US.

This fucks up supply and demand on food around the world. Hard to make money as a farmer in Africa when your competition is giving away food for free.

391 One thing about Trump's tariffs in his first term: they didn't cause inflation.

Why? Because the US dollar strengthened as a result against competing currencies -- presumably the reduction in or shortage of dollars going overseas decreased, increasing foreign demand for them and driving up the price of the USD relative to those other currencies.

The stronger dollar means more buying power vis-a-vis for an imports, thus offsetting the predicted Doomsday inflation.

If I'm putting it as simplistically as possible (and I am), that's the reason to run a trade deficit. It's an interest free loan. Use sparingly.

In general you should be getting more from trade partners and client states than vice versa. If you're not, it's time to reevaluate those deals, and take a good hard look at any of your "friends" who might be skimming those deals.

414 Perhaps I'm just ignorant as to what the numbers actually mean. Ignoring taxes, tariffs, etc etc, if 100 Canadians buy USD$100 each of American milk, then the American companies selling that milk get their $10,000, and the Canadians all get their milk. How is there any kind of loan involved in that? What is unfair about that? Sure, they could have bought Canadian milk, but they chose not to. That's an advertising or quality control problem, not macroeconomics.

BRICS doesn't have to play games with the dollar or replace it to win. They can just block the US from using the dollar as a weapon against them by refusing dollars, upon which they just trade with other moneys.

The biggest mistake of the Ukraine War plan was scaring the crap out of the Global South that this could be done to them any time the US wanted. Same with Western Banks confiscating their "getaway Retirement depostits" -- huge stupidity to make ourselves untrustworthy.

That's easily solved. Finding pirates was always a moneymaker in the past. You just charge a fee when you drive off pirates or recapture ships and goods. You build some specialized ships and marines to after the pirate nests instead of sail an aircraft carrier group back and forth.
