You know who's feeling really excited about these numbers?
The Socialists. Since the Democratic Party is already basically indistinguishable from the socialists anyway, one might reasonably think that voters would be OK with a more honest label. So the socialists are thinking -- This is urt chance to supplant the Democratic Party with a party that has the same policies but a more honest label. THe problem for the scialist is that there is ni unified socialist parrty -- instead, there are abut 5 or 7 competing socialist factions (typical of socialists). If they were to unify into a single parrty, they might have a chnae to overtake the Democrats now, But luckily, they are splintered and thus doomed to fail. Losing the objective opens up a pathway to severe financial implications to the Universities.
And the University System is the Problem. Posted by: garrett Universities are only important because they serve as credentials rather than education markers nowadays. Even though I retired as a prof, most education spending is simply wasted. Was helping one of my wife's students and the current average for actual spending 2022-23 (most recent) https://tinyurl.com/3ujmssaz has only about 27-39 percent of all college costs being teaching staff. The rest is not directly related to students. K12 is not exempt. Spending per student has reached 18k per year which is simply not sustainable with current cost structures. Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara =========== Under any scenario, public debt is not going to be repaid. It is well over 140-150 percent of GDP and that does not figure state spending in. Only workable political solution is what we did after WWII, e.g. debt repression by outgrowing it and keeping tight rein on consumption. The major issue is a decreasing Debt to GDP ratio as a richer economy can pay back debt steadily without very much pain. A federal debt to gdp ratio that is halved in something like 20 years would be exceptional and relatively rare in economic history. Posted by: whig at April 02, 2025 02:10 PM (ctrM5) 201

150. I am puzzled as to why we didn’t hear anything about the Wisconsin Supreme Court race until three or four weeks ago and then it was completely hair on fire from the Republicans that were paying attention. I personally don’t believe musk helped the cause with running up there and giving out million dollar checks to people because they signed a petition. If you look at the electoral map of Wisconsin, it’s very much like Michigan. Lots and lots of red throughout the body of the state where population is somewhat low and solid blue in Milwaukee, Madison, and Green Bay. Very difficult to overcome millions of city folk voting for all the liberal ideas when the rural population is much smaller. The people coming to musk’s rally were people that were going to vote, no matter how much you paid them, for the Republican. I don’t think he changed anyone’s mind. And the liberals are going to vote for the liberal judge so that they can keep their illegals protected, abortion, and free bunnies for every bleeding heart group there is. 237 Prison food should be nutritious and reasonably tasty. Special dishes should be provided courtesy of those prisoners who are doing especially well at their jobs.
Posted by: Oglebay at April 02, 2025 02:19 PM (MMp6W) I agree. I don't have a firm stance on prisoners doing labor. Personally, if I were in prison, I think I'd rather be picking up garbage on the side of the highway or whatever than sitting in a common room watching Judge Judy all day but that's just me. As far as everything else -- yeah, we should treat them as humanely as possible, including feeding them well. The shit we feed our prisoners (and K-12 students for that matter) is disgraceful.* *I know I'm generalizing, and some prisons and schools don't fit this general pattern. A friend, with some experience, told me how you make prison food tasty. First, order the vegan/alternative because you get more food in those. Second, use commisary money and buy Cheetos. Crush those up to season your meal. I told him he should write a cookbook

Only democrats are dumb enough to think Musk is the one at DOGE doing the work. A kid named Big Balls is finding all the waste and corruption. It's not gonna stop when Musk leaves. The irony that Big Balls is saving the country must burn the feminist mind. Posted by: AlaBAMA ============== That Bret Baier interview with the DOGE team should have shown Dems that Musk has been a smart leader by setting up a team and a structure that can roll on without him. Texas used to do that. Grew their own food, veggies and animal. Sewed their own clothes. Made their own soap. Made all the furniture for state offices. Had a school bus repair facility. Then a court case said we couldn't force inmates to work.
Posted by: rickb223 at April 02, 2025 01:56 PM (BJy/u) So don't force them to work. Make work a privilege, with privileges attached. You work, you get better food. No work? Purina Con chow for you. You work diligently, you get a few bucks to spend in commissary, and a few bucks put into a savings account to use upon your eventual release. And maybe you get one day early release for every ten spent working. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at April 02, 2025 02:25 PM (8zz6B) 260

Rand Paul is a free-trade disciple.
His opposition to tariffs is disappointing, but not surprising. Free trade is fine if it was actually tariff-free both ways. In this globalist system where it's fine for nearly every country on the planet, especially are biggest trading partners, to slap on tariff after tariff on the U.S. while we charge nothing, or on average 3%, we do not have free trade, or anything close to it. It's free for most everybody but us. It also discounts the devastation it's done to our manufacturing base and our inability to make some of the most important things in a modern economy. But that's all OK. Maybe, eventually, we can buy everything, including food, pharmaceuticals, and weapons systems from China, while we all sit back, code, and let the Chinese-made robots do everything. Right Rand? If there were no steel tariffs, the U.S. would have almost zero domestic steel industry or auto & plane manufacturing. If there were no tariffs and subsidies for farmers we'd be eating food produced in Canada & Mexico, and Brazil & Argentina. Excellent chart from Wiki: https://tinyurl.com/bdh3ukks $1-trillion trade deficit with the rest of the world in 2023. Posted by: SpeakingOf at April 02, 2025 02:27 PM (6ydKt) 263
As a general rule, prisons ought to be humane. Except the one where we put our government. That should be a squalid dungeon so horrifying that people a thousands of years from now say they'd rather be thrown in to the Tullianum than the American Congressional Dungeon. MAGA MAGA MAGA Posted by: Too many MAGA voters everywhere at April 02, 2025 02:11 PM (9X60i Horseshit. I'm not a particularly MAGA guy, but I have to assess reality. It's not that Donald J. Trump and his voters are right about everything. They are not. But our core problem is a wholly unaccountable ruling class that doesn't care if the soul of this nations dies, as long as they can feed on the carrion it leaves behind. So, yeah - if Americans voted for Trump against the exhortations of that ruling class, then I demand they comply without exception or be banished to the outer reaches. It's time for them to be corrected, not coddled. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at April 02, 2025 02:28 PM (BI5O2) 266

The Democrats would never have a flaming queer like Graham out front. But they are totally cool with the GOP having him. It basically confirms the uniparty corruption. No-one wants to make the first move. If it starts it will be mutually ensured destruction for both.

Texas could figure it out. Posted by: Blonde Morticia We did. Better you behaved, the easier work you got with less & less direct supervision. The hitch is, regardless of working or not, you can't reward them by feeding them differently. Posted by: rickb223 at April 02, 2025 02:43 PM (BJy/u) 273

Footnote: I've long thought that the Left's REAL support (living, breathing humans) is around 30% of the citizenry. Evan Thomas (Newsweek) admitted during the Kerry campaign that the media support would add about 12% to his total -- which meant that without that, he'd have polled around 35% or so.
And during that campaign or the one after, a conservative mole at ABC "News" leaked an email from the editor in chief telling the newsroom guys to do everything in their power to make the Dems look good and the Repubs look bad. Posted by: Beverly at April 02, 2025 04:27 PM (Epeb0) 275
