Pete Hegseth: We're Restoring Old Combat Standards, and Will No Longer Have Different Standards for Men and Women

Note that the physical standards will be higher for "combat arms" MOS's (military occupational specialties), as opposed to support/technical MOS's.

Will women be able to qualify for combat roles... if they meet the same standards demanded of men.

We'll soon have a very large-scale study about whether it's true that there is no difference in the physical abilities of men and women, as the leftists and Trans Cultists insist.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a memo Monday ordering men and women to meet the same physical fitness requirements if they want to serve in combat roles, saying the Pentagon had "allowed standards to slip."
"Different standards for men and women in combat arms, MOS and jobs, that's not acceptable," Hegseth said in a video posted to X, using the abbreviation for "military occupational specialty," or job type.
"We have to have the same standard -- male or female -- in our combat roles to ensure our men and women who are under our leaders, or in those formations, have the best possible leaders and the highest possible standards that are not based at all on your sex."
The memo, which orders the military branches to "develop comprehensive plans to distinguish combat arms occupations from non-combat arms occupations," specifies in hand-underlined text that the soon-to-be-developed standards must not "result in any existing service member being held to a lower standard."
"All entry-level and sustained physical fitness requirements within combat arms positions must be sex-neutral, based solely on the operational demands of the occupation and the readiness needed to confront any adversary," Hegseth wrote.

For example, Hegseth's guidance says troops on the front lines should be able to "carry heavy loads, endure prolonged physical exertion and perform effectively in austere, hostile environments."
"Service members in these roles must exhibit speed, strength, agility and endurance to navigate the demands of combat situations," the document reads.

There ought to be uniform standard for all military jobs. If you have separate male and female standards for any job, you're implicitly claiming the standards are immaterial for that job or you're cutting women a break they're not in fairness entitled to. Doing this for combat arms alone, will more or less exclude women from these roles. So we keep the untenable situation where men are responsible for war fighting, while women still get a say in what wars are fought. And justifying this on the basis that it's what is best for winning wars is sensible enough, except that we aren't committed to winning any politically and will remain committed to our insane politics unless or until the threat is existential (and maybe even afterward given how crazy things have become). Either women are equals who have to bear all the same burdens, or they're not. Any other approach just codified the double standards the left has created over the last several decades. I understand this is a cranky take, but I don't see this as winning anything.

In WWII, women flight tested aircraft, ferried equipment, and all sorts of work that aided the war effort. We would have had a much longer war without their contributions. That being said, a skills job is not the same as a physical requirements job like infantry, where men excel.

69 Several years ago now, the Army replaced the old fitness test (APFT) with a new test (ACFT). At first, it was going to have universal standards men and women had to meet, and higher scores were required for more combat-focused positions.

But, women kept having trouble passing the (lowered) standard. And one event (hanging leg tuck) had a very high failure rate with females. So, they made gender based scoring, and let people do a plank event as a temporary alternative to the hanging event. Senator Gillibrand kept hassling the military to pause and delay full implementation of the ACFT, and they finally removed kept the gender and age based scoring, removed the higher score requirements for combat positions, and fully implemented the plank event instead of the hanging leg tuck.

The argument for decades was that standardized testing was wrong for everyone, but if you’re going to have it, you need to ~~dumb it down~~ lighten the load for those groups that testing shows are most likely to fail such testing for reasons that have nothing to do with Democrats having already implemented ~~dumbed down~~ more equitable standards for groups that Democrats believe are inferior.

The Summer we graduated, I about killed myself training so that I could try and keep up with that dude.

And I could never keep that guy in sight beyond the first 1/2 mile or so...

Of course, he couldn't carry a pack over 40 lbs for more than a mile of flat ground without bitching.

I've raised that point before. Voting age was lowered to 18 because men were being drafted to fight in wars but could not vote. Fair enough.

But women weren't being drafted, and yet they got to vote at 18, which kinda gave the lie to the whole argument, IMO.

During off season, he basically took it easy, while I would be running, lifting, and generally working my tush off. After that I was like it's just not worth the pain for time to get it back. So now I bike or row when running is required.

1. The testing is not designed for real-world conditions in a modern military. It is designed solely to exclude women and minorities. If you ask for details, you are racist.

As I recall, there was a study in Israel that determined that women were equally good if not better at being snipers. Not sure if that's how they do it there, but women can, for the most part, shoot just about anything well, if trained properly.

It's the humping bodies, dragging 150 lbs packs, etc. that women just can't do. So, no foxhole duty, I should think.

Hell, even Dr. Ruth could snipe.

The reasoning for this is simple. I have done sports many times when it was only males in the venue. Once the cheerleaders walked in to practice on the other side of the gym, the game changed abruptly. Much more individual play and showing off than team play. Much more trash talking, many more fights.

A combat unit of men must be completely focused on the common enemy they are fighting. Men are Morons, and once there are females present when males are in high stress, high testosterone situations, then the men will start competing with each other for females. At that point, unit cohesion is gone.

If we must have female combat troops, I think they should be in all female units. Greatly lessens the odds of the men losing their focus and 130# females can more easily drag an injured 130# female to safety compared to dragging a 250# male.

I remember my sister said going through basic training in the late 90's they were given colored cards they kept in their front pocket. If they were getting too tired or out of breath they could hold up the certain color of card which would let the instructor know they needed a breather. She said she never used it because she didn't want to be "one of those" recruits that would get a reputation of needing a "crutch'.

My biggest achievement in the Army didn't involve PT.

I was the ringer in Spades. As a fresh faced, not quite 21 white boy that could drink six Miller Lites and play good cards ? I drew quite a bit of what you'd call KP duty.

Its not easy, at dime a point, to whip a team of NCOs enough to where an entire golf bag and a few pictures of dead presidents are exchanged.

My two mile was in less than 15 minutes. Not fast at all. But I could play cards.

We'd been at war with him in the Atlantic for about a year. The American battleships put to sea to chase down the Bismarck in May 1941. We were guarding Canada so her troops could go to England. Declaring war then did give him several months of sinking ships off the US coast. If he had not declared war the two wars would have merged, by hook or by crook.

In college there were a lot of these questionaries. I sometimes would amuse my self seeing what score a teetotaler would get to their 'anti drink' quiz. Usually pretty high because of their sloppy writing.

To get past the physical requirements for probies, they made the tests wimpy enough for females to pass, applied the wimp tests to all, then announced loudly that the standards and tests for both sexes ARE THE SAME, you guys!

Thank heaven the fireMEN had the pride and good sense to keep to their own standards of fitness (and they took to calling the females, not firefighters, but "firewatchers").

But the FDNY made a tiny blonde gal the Chief of Department (rumor has it that she'd had affairs with a couple of firemen; well, at least she's straight). She'd never fought a fire, needless to say.

379 Went in the army circa 1979.
They had already started the "all women can do anything men can do" malarkey. OC it's BS, not even all men can do whatever men can do.

In my BT company, the drill sgts had been instructed that the ladies (one of the first mixed training companies, 1/4 female) WILL pass the physical requirements to graduate Basic.

They already had slightly lower targets for female or older soldiers - but it was ludicrous. The 3 mile run the ladies got to run in place for X minutes rather than do an actual 3 mile run.
