Reading, Fram2 is a first. First manned polar orbit ever. And second, Elon is gonna lob that thing southward over Cuba for the desired polar orbit.

This is a first since NASA got in trouble dropping exploded rocket debris over Cuber, given Castro something to bitch about.

It's tricky thing. They're going to allow it because of the autonomous flight termination system. Self-destruct, IOW, and completely autonomous.

Now, if I were riding that thing, I don't think I'd like it where the computer could just decide to blow us all to smithereens on its own.

Correction, SpaceX has done at least two unmanned polar orbits from the Cape since about 2020. Those were the first since the '60s.

So, they've demonstrated they can do it well.

The reason autonomous self-destruct is needed is because ground based signals would be looking up the ass end of the rocket going south. I'm not sure of all the geometry, of why that isn't the case with east bound launches. Probably transmitter location.

This southern polar launch trajectory from the Cape is interesting. They have to initially go a bit east of south to avoid going over Miami, then take a slight dog leg to due south (this has fuel inefficiencies from the optimum "gravity turn" trajectory, but not all the bad).

They can't shoot north, because that would put it over the US (right over SC here), so they have to go south for a polar trajectory.

High latitudes are better for polar and near polar inclinations because you don't have to loose as much tangential velocity due the earth's rotation.

Fram2 is going to be close to circular, about 270 mile altitude.

A very interesting near-polar orbit are the sun-synchronous orbits. It's a trick of adjusting the orbit so the nodal precession is exactly equal to the sun's apparent motion, so the orbit stays aligned with the sun.

It essentially maintains a fixed local mean time over the surface of the earth. This is very useful for weather and even spy satellites.

My wording trying to describe the Sun-synchronous orbit (SSO) was confusing. Look it up if interested to see diagrams.

Consider a non-rotating geocentric reference frame. From that frame, the sun orbits around the earth once per year. Imagine the terminator then rotating around with the sun. An SSO rides that terminator, some fixed angle offset from it as it slowly moves around from the perspective of the non-rotating earth frame.

Now, the earth is rotating under that. The satellite passes over all sorts of different locations, but for every location it passes over, the local mean time, and thus sun angle is the same.

We started the month with the insanity of Mawdi Gras, where parades got postponed for "bad" weather, and now here it is 80-something humid degrees every day.

The little kei trucks are probably valuable in certain contexts, like quick transport where fuel is an issue. But I'd hate to drive such a small vehicle on the terrible roads here. It would be like riding a buckboard on The Rifleman, or a Model T on the roads of 1920. A longer-wheelbase car with more body insulation is essential. Such a small truck would be loads of fun on the roads in Denver, though.

Many of you may remember that we spent two months at Walter Reed for radiation treatments about two years ago. And during that time we were able to sightsee much of DC, and i particular many of the Smithsonian's buildings and exhibits.

And at that time we were struck by how the message of the white-man had brought nothing but sorrow to this land, and that racism was entwined within the fabric of society was found in almost every exhibit, no matter which building you were visiting.

Note the satellite would only stay apparently fixed right over the equator in an exact equatorial orbit. When the orbit is inclined, the satellite appears to move in a figure-8 pattern in the sky.

If you're trying to do highly precise orbits, like for GPS I suppose, the radius does come into it in so far as the gravitational field is no longer uniform because the radius isn't, so you have to account for all the little wibbles and wobbles so that 0.0001 radians in your data doesn't slowly turn into 0.00009 and make a Trident hit the next village over. (farcical example, but you get what I mean)

Oh mine isn't. But then again, Vtuber model designer/rigger seems to be considered a GenZ thing. I just happen to be a GenXer doing it.

(And before anyone starts sneering at me, a good fully-rigged model can have a pricetag up to $8K. Sure, the bubble is probably going to burst soon, but economics dictates the prices people are willing to pay for something. So I'm good for now.)
