Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wednesday Overnight Open Thread - April 2, 2025 [TRex]![]() Good evening Horde. The time has come for mid-week shenanigans of the overnight variety. This is the Wednesday night ONT.![]() ![]() Joshua King is charged with possession, use, or removal of explosive devices after his wife alleges she found a block of C4 explosive among his things. King is a sergeant in the 588th Engineer Battalion, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson. Law enforcement said his wife told law enforcement she and Joshua were going through a divorce. She said she was cleaning out the home when she found the C4 in a small wooden dresser in the garage. His wife told investigators that he allegedly brought home the plastic explosive shortly after her father gave them a retired explosives detection canine. She said Joshua had told her not to tell anyone that he brought the C4 home from Ft. Carson. At the time, she said she didn't realize exactly what C4 was. Investigators later spoke to another ex of King's who was living with him at a different residence.Someone signed for the C4 at some point, so going to be some 'splainin to do. Don't think C4 is in the same category as office supplies.

I've been reading Narnia fanfics on AO3. Specifically, about doomed world Charn.
I'm not linking hanky panky in here, although AO3 has a reputation for that elsewhere. On the other hand, lasciate ogni speranza because we know how Charn ends up. "In Word and Deed" by Syrena Of The Lake - archiveofourown.org/works/7998928 This floats a magic system based on D&D Power Words (basically). It ponders what the Deplorable Word actually is. [There's a followup: mihrsuri, "Pointed Up (At The Red Sun)".] "A Child of Charn" by The Landlady - archiveofourown.org/works/40984122 This looks at Charn's elite from the eyes of its citizenry. There's also some good stuff by edenfalling / Elizabeth Culmer; mostly prose poems. Posted by: gKWVE at April 02, 2025 10:11 PM (gKWVE) 23

Looney Tunes...Bugs Bunny in particular caused me to walk nearly 10 miles when I was an ankle biter. My brother and I had all the dialogue of every single Bugs Bunny cartoon memorized. When you possess such a wealth of knowledge, it's only to be expected to make use of it. So, driving in the car, my brother and I would recite specific cartoons from memory. (The "I wanna Easta Egg, I wanna Easta Egg...to HAVEEEEE" episode can be especially annoying if you're stuck in the car with us.
And so, my brother and I were told to get out of the car and walk the rest of the way home. Two things...in retrospect, we deserved it. We put extra panache into our rendition. And, it wasn't half bad. Since we had a whole bunch more episodes to rehash on the walk. Posted by: Orson at April 02, 2025 10:12 PM (dIske) 26

At the precocious age of seven Chuck Jones learned an important lesson for anyone who wants to create really - "Character always comes first, before the physical representation."
And how did he learn that? When a tom wandered onto his parents' property in Balboa. A most peculiar cat as he had strapped around his neck a tongue depressor and on it written in purple ink was one word - "Johnson." It was Johnson who demonstrated to Chuck: it is the individual, the oddity, the peculiarity that counts. Extracted from pg. 14 Chuck Amuck Posted by: Anna Puma at April 02, 2025 10:56 PM (xiqAs) 122

- I have to say it though, how dare Israel have one penny of tariffs considering how much foreign and military aid the US has given it. That's some chutzpah. Posted by: Leupold at April 02, 2025 04:22 PM (4pwAx) - Israel taxes everything and everybody (both customs and VAT) coming into the country. It's not about the US. It's about the Israeli government needing revenue for its bloated bureaucracy. The biggest victims are us Israeli citizens, who have to pay for this and whose salaries, cars and gasoline are taxed like crazy. But as it is, Israel already has a US trade agreement from the 80s, where tariffs were removed from almost everything except agricultural goods and something else which I forgot. I think the remaining tariffs amounted to something like $11m in 2024. From the list I saw, Israel has been one of the lowest tariff trading partners of the US for a long time. Get hold of the list and see who the real bad guys are. In any case, I'm pretty sure that VAT will continue to apply to my consumer good shipments from the US because VAT is a tariff on the consumer, not on the manufacturer. VAT rate here is currently 18%. Sucks. Posted by: Biden's Dog sniffs a whole lotta malarkey, at April 02, 2025 11:17 PM (J/vW3) 151

Posted by: Romeo13 at April 02, 2025 11:16 PM (QAkQ3) The point of all of that is to reshore industry, though. The who reason for tariffs is to make America more attractive for manufacturing, in order to reduce our trade deficit with the world. Starliner’s flight to the space station was far wilder than most of us thought
...already, the failure of so many thrusters violated the mission's flight rules. In such an instance, they were supposed to turn around and come back to Earth. ... Wilmore: "I don't know that we can come back to Earth at that point. I don't know if we can. And matter of fact, I'm thinking we probably can't. So there we are, loss of 6DOF control, four aft thrusters down, and I'm visualizing orbital mechanics. The space station is nose down. So we're not exactly level with the station, but below it. If you're below the station, you're moving faster. That's orbital mechanics. It's going to make you move away from the station. So I'm doing all of this in my mind. I don't know what control I have. What if I lose another thruster? What if we lose comm? What am I going to do?"... https://tinyurl.com/yw5je2a6 Posted by: Braenyard - some Absent Friends are more equal than others _ at April 03, 2025 12:18 AM (SP4ma) 205

So if we had started to fall off and lose that, which there's a plus or minus that we can have; we didn't lose the station ever, but we did start to deviate a little bit. But it meant Wilmore had to go hands-off from Starliner's controls. Imagine that. You're drifting away from the space station, trying to maintain your position. The station is your only real lifeline because if you lose the ability to dock, the chance of coming back in one piece is quite low. And now you're being told to take your hands off the controls. What was hysterical about Pepe le Pew is that Eddie Selzer, the head of the animation department at Warner Brothers, informed the animators that there was nothing funny about a skunk, they decided to go ahead and make a cartoon about a skunk anyway. Then the guy had the brass balls to be the one to accept the award when it won the Oscar. The very height of un-funny stuff was bullfights, which spawned Bully For Bugs which they probably won't show any more because of the Mexican Hat Dance in it.

Heh. I just Groked ballistic reentry. Soyuz and Apollo had that designed in. If RCS and attitude control was lost, the thing was designed for a survivable ballistic reentry (think uncontrolled plunge, but you had to get it started right). Soyuz has had to do several of those over the decades. Poor Don Pettit, riding back home on one of those, pulled 8g's. With a load strapped to his chest. He was not a happy camper. Another Japanese astronaut-ette had to ride one of those, and it put her in the hospital, spinal injury. Nothing permanent, I don't think, but a very bad ride. Now, it turns out that Dragon and the Starliner do not have such a built-in ballistic failsafe. They depend on system redunancy to maintain control. "Survival would not be guaranteed", says Grok. You can spread silica gel out on a cookie sheet in the oven, and bake it to drive off the moisture it has absorbed. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at April 03, 2025 01:15 AM (8zz6B) 265

Yeah, then I'd try the glass jar idea. I think any kind of closely-woven fabric is probably going to interfere with the airflow too much. I could be wrong, though. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at April 03, 2025 01:17 AM (W5ArC) 267

Perhaps sew it into bags made of high-thread-count percale? Could still dry it out in the oven, with low heat I think. Posted by: JQ at April 03, 2025 01:14 AM (rdVOm) If it is silica sand, then, I doubt it will be an effective dessicant for boxes of ammo. I think it dries flowers by wicking the moisture away from the petals. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at April 03, 2025 01:19 AM (8zz6B) 271

The 3D printing community (of whom I am one) uses silica gel to keep some types plastic filament dry (some kinds absorb moisture, which then boils off in the hot end/nozzle, leading to a poor surface finish).
I use calcium chloride myself. It absorbs a ton more moisture than an equivalent amount of silica gel. It's not (easily reusable), but drying the silica gel out in the oven is something of a pain in the ass anyway. It's dirt-cheap in the form of ice melt (read the label... there are different kinds of chemicals in different brands). It's easy to buy here in Alaska. YMMV if you're in Florida or something. Posted by: JQ at April 03, 2025 01:19 AM (rdVOm) Checking the label would be a good idea. Silica gel is made kind of coarse and chunky, so air can flow through and around the granules, which literally suck moisture out of the air. Those little packets you find in bags of beef jerky, and pill bottles, and packed with electronic and camera gear are silica gel. A real good dessicant for crates and cabinets is calcium chloride, and you can buy little plastic basket things that use it, and catch the slime that drips out. Marine supply stores should have it, maybe RV supply places too. Calcium chloride is very cheap. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at April 03, 2025 01:27 AM (8zz6B) 280

JQ, what the heck, save some, and preserve a wildflower that grows where you live. My Mom did a lot of flower preservation. She stored them in a damp basement, alas, and I was unable to save them. I should do that for one flower from here. I need to make some decisions soon, but I am still contending with a big piece of the puzzle that hasn't been solved yet. My front lawn is not mowed at all, it is a small field full of weeds and wildflowers, but something is always blooming there.

Posted by: JQ at April 03, 2025 02:13 AM (rdVOm) One day my grandma just stopped being in the present. She called my aunt to say if she wanted to see her before she died, she'd better come quick. So Aunt Dorothy went over, and grandma was up on a ladder in the basement getting down canning jars. She asked why Dorothy was not ready for the school bus and where on earth was Shirley (my mom). So, off to memory care she went. She was perfectly happy there, and for the first time in her life, she cussed like a sailor on shore leave, but she called everyone by her daughter's names, so I was Shirley, etc. And she had a great time, got her hair done once a week, showed off for all the old boys. Sometimes it's a blessing, some times it is a curse. I intend to enjoy being bonkers when my times comes, which probably isn't too far away.
