  • The 2025 Razer Blade 16 is... God dammit you guys. (Tom's Hardware)

It's a 16" laptop with a 120Hz 2560x1600 OLED display - not astounding but perfectly usable, up to a Ryzen 370 (four Zen 5 cores and eight low-power Zen 5c cores, plus 16 graphics cores), up to an RTX 5090 - laptop edition, meaning a downvolted desktop 5080 with 24GB of RAM rather than 16GB, up to 64GB of soldered RAM, up to 4TB of SSD, and almost but not quite the Four Essential Keys because Razer literally hates you.

I mean, the keys are there, but PgUp is where Home should be and PgDn is where PgUp should be and the other two are weird squiggles that I can't interpret. (Game Mode and Performance Mode, apparently.)

Windows PowerToys can solve that, except for the labels being wrong.

It lasts over seven hours on battery playing video, which is not all day but blows other gaming laptops out of the water; some don't even manage three hours.

Fortunately, there's the price: Starting at $3000 and going up to $4900, there is no chance that I would ever consider buying one.

  • Hynix has paid Intel $1.9 billion to finish acquiring Intel's flash memory division. (Tom's Hardware)

The headline is a bit confusing, but this is actually the last phase in the agreement signed in 2020 and not a new deal.

  • Nvidia's 5000 series graphics cards are now available at retail. (WCCFTech)

I mean, not the 5090, and the 5080 and 5070 Ti are selling way above MSRP, and nobody should buy the 5070 at all, but... Yeah.

  • Are the latest AI platforms secure? No. (Lupin & Holmes)

The authors hacked the Gemini Python sandbox and downloaded the source code.

  • US banks no longer need prior government approval to deal with cryptocurrencies. (Axios)

This doesn't make it safe, but does make it slightly less irritating.

Yeah, well, I *planned* to sleep later. Things happened.

Drizzly rain here (whatever happened to those TV ads for "Ding-Dong! It's Drizly!"?) and warm but at least not hot. Rain is supposed to continue off and on all day. I can't wash the car, so probably a grocery run is in my future. Hey, I might stop by the tobacco shop just to hang out for a bit.

One more day of work, I hope not a whole one, on Monday, and then school is OUT!

34 Having a leisurely pipe with my coffee and thinking about breakfast. I could go out -- though my favorite spot doesn't open until about eight.

And I've spent enough on eating out for this weekend. Yesterday Miss Linda and I stopped at a local bar and grill in a small shopping district not far from where I (used to) work. A glass of wine for her, a Topo Chico mineral water for me, some wings and some Mexican steak tacos -- and $42 savaged my credit card. Urk. Nice place; an open room on one side and a narrow hole-in-the-wall-bar setup on the other, real character; but pricey.

I also blew $10 on a 1996 paperback edition of Bradbury's The October Country at the small bookstore across the street. Also very pleasant, two stories with wide windows overlooking the street upstairs, and even an elderly bookstore cat to pet.

One of the most important observations that my dad imparted with respect to extremist Irish followers of the pro-Palestine movement is that it is more than a political cause for them. It is a faith structure.

This has been crucial for me in understanding their zealotry, their unwillingness to listen to any slight deviation from the established narrative, and the frightening anger they unleash towards those who publicly express such deviation.

These are not followers of a political cause who are open to listening to different perspectives, or more peace-oriented, pragmatic solutions than the extremism they espouse.

No, this is a faith structure. And unquestioning adherents to a faith do not want their beliefs to be challenged.

---------
An EBT card that likely has/had a credit of thousands of dollars.

A grocery store clerk once had an illegal leave a receipt after using one of those government supplied debit cards. It showed the balance remaining.... almost $10K. And they were "topped off" monthly... automatically. Billions spent on this.

And it's one reason why there is such animosity between the illegals and the legacy welfare recipients.

80 The FAA says controllers issued instructions to both aircraft. Yeah, maybe after the fact, but it's clear from Delta's statement that its crew initiated what I presume was a climb in response to a command from the onboard TCAS system.

Another article I read stated that the Delta crew asked the controllers if that was a "real" aircraft that induced the TCAS command.

That goes to what I heard Ted Cruz say in the hearing the other day -- that several hundred bogus TCAS RAs were reported at DCA in the weeks following the crash involving the Black Hawk due to the Secret Service and the Navy conducting anti-drone testing at or near the airport using the same frequency spectrum as that used in TCAS.

And then it was reported that on Thursday two controllers got into a fist fight in the control tower at

I’m not saying our students just prefer genre books or graphic novels or whatever. No, our average graduate literally could not read a serious adult novel cover-to-cover and understand what they read. They just couldn’t do it. They don’t have the desire to try, the vocabulary to grasp what they read, and most certainly not the attention span to finish.

Good for her.
Always thought 'Lizzo' was a word of art until I saw her pic the other day.

101 A glass of wine for her, a Topo Chico mineral water for me, some wings and some Mexican steak tacos -- and $42 savaged my credit card.

Fajitas for two at Lupe Tortilla, no drinks and a small queso to go with the gratuitous corn chips: tax, title & license = $100

† It may have been that the meat filler was filet mignon.

102 Going out on a little gun trading expedition today. Arthritis spreading into the hands makes a couple guns, the 1911 in particular, difficult to operate and maybe even a little dangerous (like lowering the hammer on a live round). I'll just snoop around a couple shops and see if anything useful is out there.

Kind of sad the EPA lawyers had to "figure out a way to get the money back." If she and/or her shell company wasn't going to voluntarily do it then I think they should have been put in prison. And coughed up on money anyway.

108 The stupidity in Ukraine continues:

One Ukrainian lawmaker said on Telegram that the revised mineral agreement is a "horror" that offers no security guarantees from Washington.

The irony is that Washington gave security guarantees to Ukraine over surrendering their missiles; gave security guarantees to Russia w/r/t NATO expansion; gave security guarantees to Europe the proceeded to blow up the gas pipeline that fuels their economy...

I think the phrase "security guarantee" in Ukraine is "when we go stir some shit with Russia, you need to come in, at your expense, and our direction and satisfaction and 'finish the job'" Which is also code for, endless welfare and military provision - the same deal Europe gets from Washington.

119 Canada’s GDP is $2.1 trillion. Its exports to the USA are $413 billion a year. Exports to the USA make up 19% of its economy.

Exports to Canada are less than 2% of our GDP.

Delusional politicians in Canada like Ontario’s Doug Ford are huffing and puffing like a fat man on mile two of a marathon race.

Ford said, “We’re going to make sure that we inflict as much pain as possible to the American people without inflicting pain on the Canadian population.”

As the Indian chief said, how. We can replace Canadian bacon with slices of ham. I don’t think the 51st state can replace its $100 billion trade surplus by opening a few more Tim Horton stores in Red China.

...Elon predicted worldwide regulatory approval for autonomy would require something on the order of 6 billion miles

Tesla AI just shared the Tesla fleet is at 3.6 billion miles cumulatively and did 2.16B in 2024 alone. Doing some simple math and using Tesla's graphic from Q4, Tesla is likely to do another ~3.5B+ miles on FSD in 2025 alone

At the end of 2025, Tesla should be at ~7B+ miles cumulatively with Unsupervised approval in key global markets closer than many think

We're not there yet, but given this prediction was in 2016 when self driving was still in its infancy...this is crazy $TSLA

123 G'morning Horde.

We (my family and I) are in the path of the ice storm, but we're okay for now and we haven't lost power. Buildup of ice hasn't been as bad as yesterday's forecast and warnings were indicating, but what's coming down and sticking to the trees and power lines is increasing this morning as we monitor things. This is supposed to go on all day.

We're hoping it doesn't reach the point of wires coming down due to the weight, but that's how things go in an ice storm. If the temperature would just increase by one or two degrees, the freezing rain would be "just rain" and would help melt what's already accumulated.
