107 One of the things I like about this work is how unbalanced it is. Most of the "stuff" is on the right. The two figures weigh that side down more than the left which only has empty tables and benches. The woman *looks like* she's in the center but she's not. She's just off-center. The man is cropped. This extreme off-centered cropping was a fixture in photography, which Degas also practiced. Degas and many of the Impressionists thought this compositioning made their work feel more spontaneous and authentic. Here, the off-centeredness could represent how hammered the couple are, especially the woman. She's barely holding it together. I've heard absinth is extremely potent and highly addicting. If she were to get up now, the room would be spinning. She would have a hard time focusing and walking. I think Degas captured that experience perfectly here.

The Drinking of Absinthe is the French Cultural Equivalent to the Japanese Tea Ceremony.

Only with more hangovers and vomitting.

But, yeah, you don't drink Absinthe straight, there's a whole little routine to go through with specialized gizmos, if you want to do it right.

Makes a pretty good warm summer afternoon quaff.

Still, as stated by Archy above, its best use is in classic cocktails from the 20s-40s. Makes a YUGE difference in something like the "Corpse Reviver #2"

It is not liquorice, it is anise, and it is also in Aguardiente. It is what makes it "louche" turn cloudy when you add cold water to it.
I like it, though I admit the anise is only added to kill the taste of the cheap liquor. Bad anise liquor is slightly yellow, since if you just macerate the anise seed it will impart a yellow tinge, high end oil is steam extracted.

I used to macerate anise and star anise in cheap rum because I liked to add it to my pie crust dough, it flavored it for fruit pies, and it evaporated leaving the crust just a little bit more light than you would expect.

Yeah, I suspect we will see a rather dramatic dip in all American stocks.

That's where the parked inflation money and foreign money is right now. The rats will be scrambling to get their money out as supply chains adapt to these tariffs.

We need to get it out of our minds that the NYSE reflects the US economy. It doesn't. I don't know what percentage of money in the stock market is foreign (and there's no easy to way to know, since a lot of the money goes through US brokerages), but it's huge. If China has, for example, a trillion sitting in US stocks, them moving that money at all would start a sell off cascade.

Not to mention all the money printed in the last 5 years which ended up on investment banks' balance sheets -- also sitting in the stock market. That money needs to unwind, too (somewhat separate issue from tariffs, but inter-related for global companies like Blackrock)

207 170 We need to get it out of our minds that the NYSE reflects the US economy. It doesn't. I don't know what percentage of money in the stock market is foreign (and there's no easy to way to know, since a lot of the money goes through US brokerages), but it's huge. If China has, for example, a trillion sitting in US stocks, them moving that money at all would start a sell off cascade.

Well, it's not really slush funds in the way USAID is. The fed (under Trump 1.0, by the way) just turned on the printing presses. As they have been doing on and off since the dotcom bubble.

The money mostly ended up on the balance sheets of the banks, who in turn invested it in all kinds of things that I don't think most of us are thrilled about. Like buying up single family homes all across the country. But also, they invested it in the stock market, and of course they also loaned it out to individuals and businesses.

The banks get the "fresh" money before it's been priced in to the economy as devalued money, so they do very well every time the printing presses ramp up.

"The stock market is up, so I'm rich" is a real attitude and easy to fall into even if it isn't true.

My net worth has fallen for two consecutive months. Stocks I own are down, some of the retirement funds are down, real estate is flat or slightly down.

My cash position has improved. I have more - a little bit, but more - actual money but my net worth is down in terms that don't require scientific notation to express. I am poorer on paper, but it makes no difference in reality - at least not yet. In real terms - as in, "I need something, can I get it?" - I am slightly better off than I was at the start of the year.

Friend of a friend was on one of those shows. According to her, it's not ... entirely fake.

Just mostly fake. And they can do magical things with editing, which they freely do to enhance the drama.

Same with those househunter shows that used to be popular on HG TV (and maybe still are, I dont know). I had a friend who was on it a decade or so ago. Basically, they ask people who have recently bought a home to sign up for the show. As in, he and his wife already owned the house they "bought" on the show before they even submitted to be on the show. So it's real in the sense that he ended up living in the home that was on the show, but everything else (the entire premise of the show) is faked.

363 Same with those househunter shows that used to be popular on HG TV (and maybe still are, I dont know).

370 wikipedia

The Absinthe Drinker is a full-length portrait of an alcoholic chiffonnier (rag-picker) named Collardet who frequented that area around the Louvre in Paris.[2] Collardet is painted in mostly brown, grey and black tones. He is standing, wears a black top hat and is wrapped in a brown cloak, like an aristocrat; he leans on a ledge with the empty bottle discarded on the ground by his feet.[3] Manet later added a half-full glass of absinthe on the ledge.

She's right.

Look, this is about the worst case scenario for Europe right now. Most of Europe has been mooching off us since the Marshall Plan.

Some countries can stand on their own -- France, Germany, UK -- but it will still be a huge blow to their economy if they can't export to the US while blocking meaningful imports from the US, which is essentially what they've been doing.

And I get it. If I were in charge of Italy, for example, I don't want American companies taking over the country. I'd prefer it if some of the Italian culture (what remains of it) stays alive. Farmers, local food places, etc. etc.

Which is a totally legitimate position to hold.

The only problem I have with that as an American is that they're trying to have their cake and eat it too. Export their dry pasta to the US, but vastly limit US exports to them.

Can't have it both ways. That's very unfair to the US middle class.
