The artist is Carl Spitzweg (1808-1885), and he's known today as a German romanticist painter of the Biedermeier era. What I find fascinating is that he was entirely self-taught. Trained as a pharmacist, he took up painting while recovering from an illness, learning through studying and copying Old Master paintings. In his late twenties, he received a sizable inheritance, and the pharmacist became a full-time artist. He liked to tell stories within his paintings, and often combined a caricaturist's gift for satire with a finely finished artistic realism.

Spitzweg. This could directly translate as "tapered path" or "pointed away" depending on context, because German is weird like that. But the compound word probably means something different, but conceptually similar to one of those things. I wonder where the name comes from.

This painting is from 1841. It will giv eyou a good idea (a) of how people dressed back then even during recreation, and (b) how far we have fallen in our standards.
No, I don't suppose wearing full dress on a hike or a beach stroll is necessary. But so many people nowadays dress like Bart Simpson *all the time*. I like the artist's capture of landscapes and backgrounds. The subjects are usually domestic which is pleasant. There is often a subtle humor in them (his Bookworm painting comes to mind) but it isn't mean or derogatory, just understated and affectionate. The exaggerated first two figures are in that vein. It's quite appealing. Carl Spitzweg's works, including this one, remind me of Larrson's family oriented scenes that would come along a generation or so later.

The paunch and the top hat of the patriarch is a symbol of the bourgeois decadence that characterized the era. Also noteworthy is the submissive, even slavish, posture of the women, a meek wife perhaps, behind him, even as the little girl contemplates a bleak future before her, the empty butterfly net symbolizing the bleakness.
Behind her, Sally Field is carrying a pail of something, perhaps hopes and dreams, while waiting for a decent tailwind so she can become airborne. The woman in the far back symbolizes rebellion by her physical distance from the family tyrant at the front. She possibly is plotting a daring rescue, perhaps waiting for Sally Field to spot a hiding place where they can flee patriarchal oppression and pursue their collective dreams, unencumbered by men with paunches everywhere. The future is being fought over right now with things like AI. The EU is not a serious player. It's either the US or China.
Posted by: JackStraw at March 31, 2025 10:49 AM (LkLld) The EU has chosen to rule their people with a divide and conquer strategy, which has, for now, failed here. I don't see the EU siding with us, so is the WEF a third choice? Posted by: Night lifted.... at March 31, 2025 10:53 AM (2NXcZ) The EU has a certain advantage in that they rule over countries with different histories so playing one against the other for "the mutual benefit of all" works really well. Mostly it's the WEF and Germany and France all playing their little games to see who can be King of the Shitpile. The US is by contrast fairly well united historically and culturally. That's why the Commies/Democrats?WEF/Gope work so hard to divide us into easily controlled population chunks stuffed in antagonistic boxes. So far, they haven't totally succeeded. If we can get 20-30 more years or MAGA,there's a good chance that there will be a stake driven thru Our Betters hearts. Frankly though, I'm surprised Europe hasn't acquainted politicians with lampposts yet over there. Posted by: naturalfake at March 31, 2025 11:03 AM (iJfKG) 309

A president intent on retribution, for example, could manipulate the earnings record of a political opponent. Errors could also be introduced that erase the last four jobs of anyone applying for Social Security, significantly reducing their benefits. Such a change would save a considerable amount of money, as most people earn more in their 50s and 60s than they did as teenagers." --- Pew Research Center, Jan. 7, 2025, 'What the data says about federal workers' In part, "In November 2024, the federal government employed just over 3 million people, or 1.87% of the entire civilian workforce, according to BLS data."
