  • Asking good questions is harder than giving great answers. (Dan Cohen)

Well, not quite. He's talking about assessing the intelligence of AI, and the point is that asking questions that actually assess that intelligence, rather than creating a thousand page general-knowledge quiz where everything is easily looked up, is harder than answering that poorly designed quiz assuming you are allowed to look things up.

  • AMD's new 9600 non-X is about as fast as the 9600X while using the exact same amount of power. (Hot Hardware)

Okay. Not entirely sure what the point is, though it may come bundled with a cooler (and AMD's stock coolers are not complete rubbish).

  • Amazon has shipped my 128GB memory kit. It's on sale for $260 if anyone else wants one.

You can see on that page that the equivalent 96GB kit is $230, so bumping it up to the next tier is well worth it.

As I mentioned, I don't need 128GB of RAM, but the point of this build is to go a bit beyond so I can play around with things. My work laptop has 40GB of RAM and I can hit that mark without trying.

The other factor is that DDR5 runs much slower if you fill up all four slots. These are pretty standard 5600MHz models, but if you fill all four slots, the memory speed drops to 3600MHz. The real world effect isn't quite that dramatic ranging from insignificant to quite noticeable, but best to avoid that fuss unless you really need more than a single dual-channel kit can provide.

  • Developers are fighting a war with AI web crawlers. (Tech Crunch)

    AI web crawlers are asshoe.

Even more so than regular web crawlers, and I've blocked plenty of those.

Evening and morning, insomaniacals, and welcome to Friday, the consummation devoutly to be wished!

I slept okay last night, no weird dreams to report, but I still feel sluggish. No workout today, though I might stretch and do my calisthenics.

I've been putting out fires at work -- embers, really, and trying to set up firebreaks so my office won't be consumed once I leave. Today I have to get in touch with NST's financial guy -- he was going to send me some info on the mutual funds he recommended, but I haven't seen it yet.

Anyway: Friday!

It's not deliberate, it's difficult and expensive to work around this. And in many cases not that noticeable.

If you're using integrated graphics you definitely don't want this, but most of the time it's only a 5% reduction to performance.

I think about non-tech people who "want to buy a good computer" and they load it up with everything, but who definitely aren't putting a GPU in. Just a facebook machine, but the fastest facebook machine available. Old folks that custom order from Dell are buying a worse system (assuming you can spec out a system like that).

Which is fine, but seems like part of the overall ensh*ttening. Or maybe it's just easier to notice this kind of thing nowadays.

Similar to video cards in what I assume is the largest market being unavailable and regardless not appearing to be significant upgrades from mid to high level GPUs from two generations ago.

40 The trade-off of memory speed for memory volume is a longtime issue for PCs. The transition to 64-bit is when a lot of people first became aware of this because they previously were limited to less than 4GB of RAM for most practical purposes. (32 bits let you use 4GB but PC architecture stole some of it and the OS could reserve some for itself as well.)

I built a Core 2 Duo for Windows Vista. At first I ran the 32 bit version with 2GB. Later, it was time to start learning the ins and outs of 64-bit. That is when I discovered I had a choice with the supported DDR-2 RAM for the Intel motherboard. Each chip added to the array had some overhead to support it. So I could have 6GB of the faster speed, desirable for gaming, or I could have 8GB of the slower speed. The difference would scarcely be noticeable 95% of the time but it was the first time I had to consider the issue.

42 This is the only important part of that story:

"Despite her increasingly erratic actions, there appeared to be no visible sign of law enforcement or airport security whatsoever as she began running around the concourse"

Those billions of dollars we spend for "security"?

It's all pretend. They've never stopped a single thing. Never saved a single plane from harm or prevented a passenger from being in danger.

You know how you can know that? Because if they did it would be on all the MSM news channels for days, same as when the FBI claims to do it.

43 Way back when, 8-bit systems had RAM refresh as a task for the CPU, so it made a difference how much you had. I first learned about this people wrote in to an Atari magazine (ANTIC or Analog) complaining that a BASIC game listing ran notably slower on a 48KB system than on a 16KB system. The coder explained RAM refresh and why it affected his game. He had used an Atari 400 as target and didn't test it sufficiently on a system with the then max RAM. He later came up with a few changes to make it play better on a 48K machine.

This was my introduction to RAM refresh.

My last day is Monday. Technically. I plan to leave early.

I'm still copying and deleting personal files from my computer, backing up the hard drive, and making sure they'll be okay to carry on without me. Remember, they haven't actually hired my replacement, and she won't start for probably two weeks after that. Not my problem; I gave them more than thirty days' notice. But my boss delayed until after Mardi Gras to start the hiring process, and we just had interviews last week and this past Monday.

Not really. As I mentioned, many weren't aware of it until 64-bit went mainstream. The next generation upped the ante so that you had to push the upper limits of what was available to run into the issue. Workstation chip sets had greater bandwidth, at a cost that wasn't reasonable for mainstream consumers. Then better process nodes would come along and the consumer level would get a boost. This kept up for a long time until recent changes in semiconductor economics started screwing the longstanding pattern of improvement. This is why there haven't been any major price cuts on machines like the PS5 and Xbox Series X. The die shrinks aren't an option anymore to expand the market after a machine has been around a few years. The industry is still figuring out how to deal with this. The next generation of consoles will be... interesting.

60 We often remark on how America and Americans have to reject the "good enough" approach that the rest of the world, and especially the 3rd world, accepts.

It's probably not a coincidence that we are encouraged to accept it more and more with hyphenated Americans (and non-citizens) from 3rd world nations in charge of things like tech development.

Raymond Chandler (in)famously said that Sherlock Holmes was mostly a few lines of great dialog and an attitude. (A non-Chandler fan could say much the same of him.) But Doyle did *something* right to make his character live more than a hundred years later: characterization, the air of mystery and snug Victorian peril, and a brisk writing style that seems very modern.

Hound is the one that's been adapted to films and TV most often, mostly because it has outdoor locations and lots of action.

Speaking of Stout, I reread some of the Nero Wolfe novels every year.

136 Enshittification was termed mainly to describe what was happening on the internet from Web 2.0 up to now.

Mainly it was describing how horrible the experience of the internet became when it was corporatized and how everything seems to get worse when it’s supposed to get better.

Take 2FA, where nearly every big site wants your phone number ostensibly for increased security but also, more importantly, to get that mobile number and all the goodies that come along with having another identifier for an individual, as well as the potential marketing opportunities.

Tech hardware and software could probably be included in that.

But people complaining about expensive junk hardware or buggy software is nothing new in the tech space.

Just ask anybody who had an Atari 2600 how fast the rubber covers ripped off the joystick and you’ll see that’s been a problem for a very long time.

I've re-read entire series, usually when enough time has gone by that I might remember the major reveals before I get to them in the book, but I'm picking up newer subtler details this read through, and also just enjoying the storyline again.

Jim Curtis' "Grey Man" series, John Van Stry's "Portals of Infinity" (or any of his larger series, frankly), Lisanne Norman's "Sholan Alliance", and Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - all of these are great re-reads for me.

Often I'll re-read a series when it's been a while since a new book has come out, and I need to refresh my memory fully before I dive into the new book.

161 >What does this deal leave for the parent company?

It doesn't leave much for gamers, either. Tencent is controlled by the CCP, and like TikTok they'll shove even more degeneracy into the Western-market products while making bangers for China.

162 The sorting of the music list makes my brain twitch... ISO8601 or go home.

And yes, the only place I don't use ISO8601 is where the form dictates that it's required to use a less ideal format.
