Because, reports David Strom, Columbia made promises to Trump to get its federal funding restored. And the president just publicly stated she lied and had no intention of honoring those promises. It was all a lie to get the money back, and then keep on doing what they're already doing.

The Death Penalty is needed. Schools throughout America are in nearly-open defiance against the Supreme Court's ruling that discrimination against whites and Asians is just as illegal as discrimination against the left's favored "BIPOC" groups. But they've all conspired to continue this discrimination by requiring "diversity statements" from students, which are just essays wherein minority students tell the school they're minorities so that the schools can give them DEI advantages while claiming "We never demanded anyone tell us their race!" At some point, the Death Penalty has to start coming down, and banning these schools from receiving any taxpayer dollars for 20 to 50 years. If there's something that Columbia wants to do that's worth doing, they can pay for it themselves. It's obscene that all these colleges are sitting on multi-billion endowments, billions in other assets (real estate, etc), and yet taxpayers are still being raped in the ass to fund them.

Honestly, I'd kind of like to see non-educational research labs get started. I had the "good fortune" to be taught by several research scientists in college and they all sucked. They didn't want to teach classes, they wanted to get paid to do their research but the university required them to cover a minimum number each year.
Lecturers were always significantly better.

I have some teaching experience from my military days, so I will look into it. Have to do a major revision of my resume, though.

I keep saying this, but the universities get federal funding because they apply for it.
It's call "research grants". The Feds offer a grant to do particular kinds of research, the university faculty apply for it, and it the Feds like the research plan, they grant money to the faculty member who applied for the grant.
The university's central administration takes 50% (apparently) of the grant in "overhead" and the rest is split between the faculty member's college - also for "overhead" - and the faculty member himself to buy research supplies, and do field work.
If you want colleges to have no Federal funding, then make the Feds stop offering research grants.

I would like to see a CFIUS-like mechanism to *control* all foreign donations to US academic institutions. Why not?

But it seems clear that something like this is absolutely warranted for academic donations.
And one also ponders whether non-teaching US institutions ("think tanks") might also come under this system. Foreign money (hi, Qatar!) has seriously polluted/ruined major non-academic public policy institutions.
Also related - what in the wild, wild world of sports is the strategery of the administration WRT Qatar? A $2B arms sale approved? Drones, with ordnance? Just who/what would be the targets for this tiny quasi-island country? I understand how the past relationship made sense, but Qatar has morphed into an adversary. WTF, over.

I agree with this 100%. That being said, I think the process needs to be fine tuned. There needs to be an educational effort made here to the public. The public needs to be fed layman's terms that explains what he is doing and why he is doing it.
Because, the next democrat getting into the Oval Office is just going to reinstate all of these wasteful, damaging appropriations with little fanfare. The public needs to be in a position to recognize them as a poor decision and have the tools (knowledge) to associate that bad decision with the democrat in the WH.
So much of this is inside baseball well over the head of the average American. Longevity is only going to exceed if the public understands exactly what is going on. That's one area where Reagan exceeds them all.

The university's central administration takes 50% (apparently) of the grant in "overhead" and the rest is split between the faculty member's college - also for "overhead" - and the faculty member himself to buy research supplies, and do field work.

What we see is that women playing for country or school can generate ratings - the Women's national soccer team until DEI choked it - out rated the men. The WNBA is a bunch of nasty Karens and just isn't attractive, which is why college women's basketball does better, and will continue to do better.
But live sports is about all that sells on TV - so the WNBA could get a decent sized deal because the demand for sports is so high.

If they are generating real profit then their pay should reflect that. I just don't think they're generating diddly squat.

I have taught over a thousand students in the last five or so. It's funny how only a few stand out. One of my favorite students was from Saudi Arabia. Wonderful kid. Smart, fun, always smiling and very respectful. We had great conversations. I was crushed when he died unexpectantly.
Another was from Germany. He was stunned when I laid my GI Joe rap on him. He loved it. Also a great student. And several Chinese students. Oddball group, and always looking for a party.
Foreign students add to the collegiate environment. But there is no room...NONE...for any pro-Islam/Hamas crap. I'd be the first to toss them out.

I've never willingly recruited an Ivy League undergrad - they've been mostly worthless for 30 years - none of their undergraduate programs are as good as the good big state research schools - or even other highly regarded private schools like Northwestern and Stanford.
Grad schools? Top notch. Undergrad? Almost worthless. Now perhaps totally so.

Actually, tennis is one of the only sports where women players outdraw men on the regular. Worldwide. It's why the women players were in such a good position to negotiate (remember, that is not a US sport, so to get even money, they had to get the world to agree)...
And if you watch tennis, women tend to be a better watch b/c men's points are over way too fast, especially on grass. Serve, ace, repeat.

If that regime is an adversary, it's inexplicable and indefensible. Imagine Soviet grad students in STEM studying here in 1983 or something.

Yes but for every foreigner at a US college, there is one American kid who either didnt go to college or had to go to a less prestigious college. There are only a finite number of slots.
So John from Oregon or Jose from Texas did not get to go to Harvard and completely change their lives because Wu from Wuhan got to go instead.

Diogenes it's probably more of an issue at the grad level, but whatever they contribute, there's a serious question about having students from Chy-nah here for STEM education. If that regime is an adversary, it's inexplicable and indefensible. Imagine Soviet grad students in STEM studying here in 1983 or something.

The benefit here was potential, and variable, and often hard to quantify. Same as for training of foreign military officers here. It did give us connections and sometimes influence or at least inside info - but that was in a different context of a actual global competition with a state that's now kaput.
I don't think maintaining a flow of a small number of truly elite foreign students (from friendly/neutral countries, which does not include Chy-nah or Qatar for example) is a problem. But massive numbers that displace American students, introduce all the toxicities we're seeing at Columbia, or represent a rather outrageous intel/tech transfer/recruitment problem like Chinese STEM students - nope.

I only learned this week or last that federal judges don't have to be natural citizens. Given how bad the universities are, the home grown law degree holders may be just as bad. But still the basic principle of not having partial loyalty to the country you were raised in to be a federal judge should be a requirement that congress, (yeah stop laughing) imposes on the judiciary.
WASTF that this has not been the case, its just another tool for the commiecrats to impose their will in violation of the constitution and often in violation of what americans voted for.

This is what they claim, I have a hard time believing a rice farmer in China (who have never even been to Beijing) can round up $400,000 from his friends and family to send his kid to college in the US, even if the kid was a super genius.
And my experience with Chinese exchange students is not only are they not super geniuses, they are not mostly not fluent in English.
I would love to see some proof that that's what is going on. Because I think it's far more likely that the Chinese government is sponsoring these kids and they are sent here for corporate espionage and spying.

If you're not, you live in absolute poverty, even in the major cities.
There is no separation between government, political party, and business in China. There are very limited private property rights (all property belongs to the state).
In other words, the wealth is heavily concentrated in the hands of the well connected "elite" there. Driving through China, the vast majority of people you see are living in what we would consider extreme poverty.

I've served on graduate admission committees, where when some applicant claimed to have a 550 TOEFL score (test of English as a foreign language) we'd all roll our eyes, because they ALL had 550 TOEFL scores, and most of them were on the "no tickee, no shirtee" plan. We joked that there was one guy in China who worked full-time taking the TOEFL for every applicant.

This is what they claim, I have a hard time believing a rice farmer in China (who have never even been to Beijing) can round up $400,000 from his friends and family to send his kid to college in the US, even if the kid was a super genius.
And my experience with Chinese exchange students is not only are they not super geniuses, they are not mostly not fluent in English.
I would love to see some proof that that's what is going on. Because I think it's far more likely that the Chinese government is sponsoring these kids and they are sent here for corporate espionage and spying.

The only curb of plenary power is if the plenary power runs into a constitutional prohibition or limitation. E.g. US cannot establish a state church even if the President and Congress agree given the Establishment clause (states could and did which is another matter).

It's a start, but what really needs to happen is for Trump to cut off all Visas from India. Student, OPT, H1B - all of it, and end all current existing visas.
You guys may not understand this, but in the tech sector, Indians ONLY hire other Indians, and they are looting the U.S. economy via remittances to India. Remittances alone make up 3.3% of India's GDP. It's a massive scam, and that's before you consider the 25 billion a year that Indian scammers rip off from Americans.

I visited my alma mater, Duke, 7 years ago when my niece was graduating with a nursing school masters. My husband and I thought it would be romantic for us (I know).

The university's central administration takes 50% (apparently) of the grant in "overhead" and the rest is split between the faculty member's college - also for "overhead" - and the faculty member himself to buy research supplies, and do field work.
If you want colleges to have no Federal funding, then make the Feds stop offering research grants.

It isn't supposed to be a billion dollar slush fund that has no contact with the university aside from allowing the admin to steal from it and invest in unamerican places and projects.
So aside from scheduled construction and a 10 year operating expense backup I would tax this part of the endowment at huge rates. Become an investor in startups or something.

Not true. The NCAA hounded UNLV coach Jerry Tarkanian for supposed violations while coaching at Long Beach State. And they ordered him fired from UNLV. They attempted to punish UNLV for keeping him, but Tarkanian sued The NCAA for violating his civil rights. After 20 years of continual investigations, the only violations that the NCAA found were unallowed meals and in room movies that UNLV picked up the tab for.
After two decades the case wound up at SCOTUS Tarkanian v. NCAA, and the NCAA settled with Tarkanian for 1 million dollars, and his legal expenses fighting the case.

I have thought all along that Biden's x posting that Kamela was to be the candidate was put out by Kamala's staff, while Biden was incapacitated, since Pelosi's crew had already put out the x posting that Biden was withdrawing.
When Biden or his team got access to the twitter account they supported Kamala since they had no other choice, it was either her, or they explain why Biden was incapacitated and needed emergency treatments.
This was not a spur of the moment thing, it was thought out ahead of time.

The only plan Harris and her campaign ever showed was how to steal money and spend it as fast as possible.

Well sure, but I bet the Chinese pay well under table to the administration an staff and all the professors for grades.
Anyhow, I would not be shocked if lots of uni money is invested in China for sentimental (pro commie) reasons or because once in China the CCP has a hand on your throat and steals you IP and copies it, and can pressure the company there in many ways. Might be interesting to see how much colleges have there. It was a huge fad for a decade or more that China was going to be infinite profit forever, honest.

Probably already mentioned, but UNLV did not receive the death penalty. The death penalty shuts down the program. Completely. UNLV was banned from post-season play for several seasons.
